1 out of 5 stars The Complete Book Of Finches And Softbills.......2003-10-24

This book does not cover the different types of finches & softbills. It is very general information only, on breeding and care of finches & softbills, no help to the person wanting more specific info. on the different types of finches and their care.

5 out of 5 stars More info. than the average bird owner even wants........2003-08-08

I think this is a very good, detailed book for someone new to finches & softbills. At times, it flips back & forth between finches & softbills in a paragraph, which can be confusing for a novice, but it's easy to figure out. It has enough nice pictures to give a good overview of many species, but is not a "picture book" - it is for someone who is serious about the birds and their care. Early on it has a section of compatability which is useful and neccessary. It has a lot of details on aviary housing (many finch books do), and bird rooms, which isn't useful to the average home/apt. bird owner, but more information is better than too little. It is definitely a good resource book.

4 out of 5 stars Great alround General Care Book!!.......2003-06-17

This book encapsulates the best possible groundwork for the beginner to still leaqrning softbill fan. Comprehensive care and breeding "how to's"
I enjoyed this book immensely and learned some breeding tips even. Thanks

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book.......2006-09-11

This is a good parakeet ownership book for beginner parakeet owners, but some information seems to be outdated. I had questions after reading the book that were not answered in the text.

5 out of 5 stars Best.......2005-10-16

We bought five parakeet care books after looking at a bunch of them. Of the five, this is the best.

The information is extensive, accurate, and up to date. The glossy photos are great. Most of the stuff we have learned in our intense initiation is contained in this book. This remains our go-to resource for parakeet questions.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to take care of your little Budgie..........2005-01-09

Matthew Vriends, consulting editor for THE COMPLETE BOOK OF PARAKEET CARE and a Veterinary and Bird Breeder from the Netherlands has written many books on Companion Parrots, as have authors Annette Wolter and Monika Wegler. Their book about parakeets really covers the "betcherrygah" or budgie, a type of Australian parakeet, and includes much more material than any of the other parakeet books I've read to date, and I believe it deserves the sobriquet `comprehensive'. The book includes a good deal of the information found in other books by Vriends and Wolters on basic bird care and breeding, as well as much specific information about parakeets or budgies divulged by Wolter and Wegler who appear to keep companion parakeets or budgies indoors (Vriends raises birds in an outdoor aviary).

The book includes dozens of beautiful photos and sections covering parakeets and human children, setting up parakeet accommodations for a pair (they hate to live alone) health care and diet, breeding and baby bird care. The photos show the various colors of budgies generated by breeders like Vriends as well as action shots of budgies in all phases of living in your home - from flying around a `bird-proof' room to courting rituals with a mate. The authors have created a `check list' the potential parakeet owner can use to determine if he or she can live with the requirements of keeping a companion budgie. Among other things, they stress that parakeets are probably better off spending more time outside the cage than in it, so if you are thinking about living with a parakeet you should consider whether or not you can put up with with the occasional bird dropping from a soaring feathered friend. Photos and text describe how to build a bird tree from which your birds can use to launch their explorations as well as return to enjoy a tasty snack of various vegetables and/or fruits.

If you can buy only one parakeet (budgie) book get this book before you buy your parakeet. The book is suitable for children ages 6-8 or older as it includes text in 10p. font and plenty of photos describing budgie behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Very Practical and Easy to read for all ages.......2003-10-25

We bought a couple of parakeets for our 11 year old daughter (a real Southern Belle). The birds and book were a birthday present and knowing absolutely nothing about them, this book has been a great help. Our daughter read it and enjoyed it. Easy to read, for all ages. It helped us buy the cage, the toys, and the birds' nutrition and so on... She still reads it when she has a question (as we do also). It helped us when organizing our home decoration and candles to fit the flights of the birds. Being in a small southern town away from pet stores, we refer to this book often. 2 out of 5 stars Some dangerous, outdated information.......2002-12-07

Overall the book is okay.
The playtree idea was very helpful in constructing the massive tree I now have, the pictures are beautiful, and there's a lot of interesting trivia.

HOWEVER, some of the advice given in this book is outdated and is now known to be rather dangerous.

1) The offering of grit. Budiges, and other hookbilled parrots, do NOT need grit as part of their diet, as they hull their seeds. If they are on a formulated diet they also do not need grit. Grit offered to these birds can cause crop impactions and death. Given that it's not necessary for digestion, there is no reason to use it.

2) Sandpaper perches. Big NO! Sandpaper perches are very hard on the feet and do not "keep nails trim". Sandpaper perches are one of the big causes of bumblefoot.

3) The use of "bird sand"...see grit.

4) The implication that clipping a bird's wings is cruel. The risks associated with free flight far outweigh the risks associated with clipping. Flighted birds are more likely to become injured by flying into walls, mirrors, windows, doors, etc..true, they may know the house layout, but if something should spook them and they take off in a panic, they are literally flying blind.
Full flight also carries the risk of escape; being nomadic birds, budgies have no homing instinct. Once your budgie flies away, your chances of seeing it alive again are next to zero.
The biggest risk of clipping is the bird being accidentally stepped on, but if you keep your bird off the floor (and you should) this isn't an issue.

5) The advocation of a mainly seed or seed only diet. Seed only diets are dangerous to the point of being lethal in the terms of long term health. Budgies, when well cared for and on a good diet, can easily live 10-15 years. On a poor diet, cut that in half for the average lifespan.

For more information on any of the above:
http://budgies-n-tiels.com

When this book was written in 1994, much of the now erroneous information was thought to be correct. Avian medical science has proven a lot of it very, dangerously wrong since the time this book was published.

Alex just has to convince his mom to let him have an iguana, so he puts his arguments in writing. He promises that she won't have to feed it or clean its cage or even see it if she doesn't want to. Of course Mom imagines life with a six-foot-long iguana eating them out of house and home. Alex's reassurances: It takes fifteen years for an iguana to get that big. I'll be married by then and probably living in my own house. and his mom's replies: How are you going to get a girl to marry you when you own a giant reptile? will have kids in hysterics as the negotiations go back and forth through notes. And the lively, imaginative illustrations show their polar opposite dreams of life with an iguana.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining.......2007-07-29

I purchased this book for my grandsons, I read it first and laughed through out. Then I gave it to them and they also thought it was funny. It's very entertaining, and written for adults and children.

5 out of 5 stars Alex could be your child.......2007-03-14

This book is so wonderfully written by Karen Orloff that Alex is able to appeal to all ages, races and genders. If your child has ever asked for a pet you can identify with this book. The mother son relationship is how we all remember our grown and almost grown little boys starting out.

              5 out of 5 stars I WANNA, I WANNA, I WANNA ..........2007-01-12

THIS BOOK DESERVES A MEDAL AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE REASONS FOR THIS STARTING WITH THE STRONGEST REASON.... no just kidding... I will not try to persuade you to buy this book like the little boy Alex "successfully" persuades his mom to buy him an iguana... This is an excellent book to kickstart a writing lesson or a debating lesson on persuasion - an what a hoot... an age level I think in the elementry grades would find this entertaining and be able to also find some text-self understanding here. Every child from the dawning of time has always wanted a pet... be i a small one like a fish or hamster.... but what about an iguana he/she is small now but???

Terrific book - The kids and YOU will love it

5 out of 5 stars I Wanna Read It Over and Over Again.......2006-11-09

I saw this in the library at school and HOWLED with laughter (much to the librarian's dismay) and fell in love with it. Great book, imaginative, HILARIOUS and definitely will be loved by children.

              5 out of 5 stars Persuasive writing.......2006-04-02

Teachers can look to this story as a great example of persuasive writing. Young Alex is trying to pursuade his mother to let him adopt an iguana. In a series of hilarious notes between Alex and his mother, the terms and conditions of pet ownership are hammered out. There is a "money" page (the point where the whole class bursts out in raucous laughter.) David Catrow illustrations are wonderfully comic. One young listener observed, "That kid is really weird looking." The last page evoked a class wide, arm pumping "Yesssss..." along with Alex. Great fun!

Molly Lou Melon may be tiny, clumsy, buck-toothed, and with a voice "like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor," but she doesn't mind. Her grandmother has utmost confidence in her, and tells her at every turn to believe in herself. "Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy," Grandma says. But Molly Lou's self-assurance is put to the test when she moves to a new town, away from her friends and beloved grandmother. During her first week of school, Ronald Durkin taunts Molly Lou Melon in the dull-witted but sharp-edged manner of career bullies, calling her "shrimpo" and "bucky-toothed beaver." Our heroine barely flinches as she systematically sets out to prove herself, and Ronald Durkin ends up feeling pretty foolish.

First-time author Patty Lovell's message is clear and simple, and the theme is familiar enough to strike chords with every reader, young and old. David Catrow, illustrator of Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs, Rotten Teeth, and other popular picture books, depicts a very weird-looking, very appealing little girl with warmth and cartoonish humor. Any child who is less than perfect will cheer with joy to meet Molly Lou Melon, a girl who doesn't let anything--or anyone--shake her belief in herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

              Book Description

"Leave it to Molly to transform all her 'faults' into marvelous talents.. . . [Catrow's] pictures fill the pages with wild perspectives, goofy-looking kids, and hilarious details. . . . Leaves readers with the feeling that anything can be accomplished if you are the best person you can be and make the most of your gifts." (Kirkus Reviews)

"What keeps the storytelling fresh is the crisp prose and the heroine's full-spead-ahead determination. . . . Catrow's full-bleed pencil-and-watercolor illustrations, awash in ripe colors and animated by slapstick exaggeration, radiate a winningly eccentric elegance." (Publishers Weekly)

"The text is fast and funny, and Molly Lou is a fetching little heroine. Catrow's palette is intense. . . . This will make a comic readaloud." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

The book's main subject is bullying. The author's main point is that you should be yourself. One of the most interesting things in this book is how Molly Lou ran through the bully's legs and scored a touchdown. In my opinion, this book is funny. I say this because it is silly. If you think you know all the ways animals travel, think again. They don't just walk, waddle, and swim, they love to fly blimps, drive jeeps, skipper submarines, and more! If you want to find out which vehicle is an animal's favorite, just think about its name. And watch out for a Sheep Jeep on the road and a Sub Cub in the water!

In this clever concept book, bold, graphic, giggle-inducing artwork introduces a fun way for the very young to look at modes of transportation. The card-stock pages are strong enough to live through lots of readings.

My 2 year old son found this in the library by himself. I guess he liked the bright red cover. We read it every night until it was due back. I returned the book and Owen threw a fit. I thought he would let it go after a night or two. He didn't and we went back to the library to check it out again. We've read it so much he can tell me what's on the page and he's getting his own copy for Christmas.

"Talk does not cook the rice." Chinese proverb (p.137)

The simple introduction states that this collection contains folktale, parables, and proverbs from around the world. It also mentions that stories are powerful teaching tools.

Stories are divided by local as in the case of Zen stories from Japan and by religious group as in Jewish or Christian tales. There are no illustrations except small decorative "borders" that divide the title from the story.

Most of the stories are short and simply told. They appear quite tellable as written or they could be embellished. The tales are suitable for a variety of ages and some for all ages. The stories are very good, but I suppose with so many stories to choose from, it must have been a hard selection process.

The source notes are a real treasure. Each section has some interesting background common to all the stories. Forest then describes the history of the tales and various sources. She says what she based her stories on but not how much she changed them. The several stories that I was familiar with do not appear to be greatly altered.

There is a list of proverbs from various countries.

I would recommend this book as a very good storytelling resource.

4 out of 5 stars Tales for all seasons, cultures, and vocations.......2003-07-31

This is one of those rare books which can appeal to audiences of a wide range of ages, faiths, and backgrounds - whether you are a child, teacher, preacher, parent, or connaisseur of world cultures.

The fifty folktales and parables in this collection have universal appeal because each tends to speak to some aspect of human experience which is common across cultures. They range from a short three paragraph Chinese tale of a philospher waking up from a dream, wondering whether he is a man dreaming he is a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he is a man, to the well known Indian tale of three blind men and the elephant.

Without being either overtly religious or secular, this collection reflects Zen, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Taoist, and Sufi faiths in its short stories, as well as traditions from Ancient Greece and Africa.

If you wish to open the early mind of a future young reader to the treasure troves of world literature, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Stories for All Tellers.......2002-06-02

Fine collection and one we see people refer to very often on discussion lists and web sites. From the simple to the complicated, from the overt to the sublime, you will find some story of value in this book that speaks to you and wants you to speak it. Well worth the price and a book that you will read and tell often.-Storyteller.net Review

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source of "Wonder Tales".......2000-04-13

Having had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Forest perfom live in Louisville, Kentucky, it was my pleasure to become reaquainted with her work. This book is as alive as her live performances. I could hardly put the book down once I started it. I would recommend this book to storytellers, story lovers, parents, and preachers. A great source of some of the world's finest tales. A job well done Ms. Forest!

This is the best juvenile seried there is. I only owned 4 books as a kid, but I read them over and over and over. Now I am trying to buy the rest of them and some are out of print! Oh that I had bought them wheni could (especially since they used to be $$$). I tried to pick up (being a girl) the babysitter's club, but that just didn't do it for me. They were so shallow and predictable. The three investigators series are quality literature, which is rare nowadays. PLEASE reprint all the out-of-print titles. Judging from others comments, many people would buy them! It would be a shame to let these go because there isnt the same calibur of books to replace them!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but typical romance, bogged down by secrets, lies, misunderstandings, and villians. .......2006-07-29

The conflict that come between these protagonists, interfering with their ability to stay together, has been told in various ways in thousands of other romance novels.

What sets this story apart from the others is the sports backdrop, injecting much needed action, color and competitiveness to an otherwise basic, dime-a-dozen plot. Throw in exciting venues such as Rome, Paris, London, Australia and New York, viewed through beautifully detailed descriptions which Nora Roberts is famous for, and the story really comes alive off the pages! It's always a rare treasure to find one of her earliest novels.

3 out of 5 stars Not Too Attracting.......2005-04-08

This is one of the few Nora Roberts books that didn't thrill me. It seemed as if she had too many different subplots, which deterred from the main story line. The characters were well developed, but didn't have the personalities with which the reader could identify.

This is the tale of two tennis stars and their on-again, off-again romance. Asher and Ty were opposites and years before it seemed as if they had everything either of them could want - they were champions, they were in love and engaged, and they were happy even with opposite personalities. At least, they were happy until Asher broke the engagement and immediately married another man. The story picks up several years later when Asher is divorced and trying to make a comeback in the tennis world. She's determined to be the #1 tennis player in the world once again and she seems to be on the right course. She's figured out everything except for the way she feels when she sees Ty again and the anger he has towards her throws off her self-confidence. Through a series of events around the tennis courts, the story finally comes out about why and how Asher could leave the only man she ever loved and why she's now back on the circuit.

This plot is the cookie-cutter romance story and it seemed as if Nora Roberts couldn't make up her mind as to which villain to place in the story so she throws several into the mix. The ex-husband who sweeps Asher away only to demand that she never play tennis again, who alienates her from her friends and family with lies. Then there's Ty's sister who loves to stir up trouble and has hidden her secrets for years because she's afraid of Ty's wrath if he found out the truth. And the baby... well that's where the story really falls apart and becomes mundane.

This is still a decent book for an afternoon of relaxing. It won't leave you with any lasting impressions but will be somewhat enjoyable while you're reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Tennis Players Find "Love" On The Court....And Off!.......2002-03-07

Stormy love story between two professional tennis players. This story will especially appeal to tennis fans.
Excerpt from the back of the book:
"Opposites attract, but it can be a volatile mix. Asher Wolfe and Ty Starbuck were tennis superstars-incendiary Ty all fire and flash, Asher the ice princess with devastating control.
Three years before, the combination had resulted in a passionate, unforgettable affair. But misunderstandings had catapulted Asher into an unhappy marriage with another man.
Now the ice princess was back on the circuit, determined to win. But from Wimbledon to Forest Hills, her concentration was threatened. Ty's dark eyes dared her to become the fiery woman he had once loved-and would not lose again."

5 out of 5 stars Cute and Cool.......2000-02-01

First of all i want to say that this was a great book. The Tennis fans will espesially like it. I don't usually read that kind of stories, but I took this one randomly and was amazad how sweet and kind of naive it was. I liked Tay and Asher very much. I recomend this book to all of you with romantic hearts. Ms. Roberts, You've done a great job through the years! Keep it up!
