Everything About Chinchillas.......2006-08-25
"The Chinchilla Handbook" makes a great companion book to Dr. Vanderlip's standard, "The Guinea Pig Handbook," by the same publisher. Profusely illustrated by Michele Earle-Bridges to enhance the well-organized, straightforward text, this book covers everything the novice (and veterinarian) should know about chinchilla history, suitability as pets, anatomy, housing, feeding, behavior, health care and reproduction. This comprehensive book concludes with information about color inheritance and the fascinating world of showing chinchillas competitively. A helpful list of chinchilla affinity groups and recommended publications precede the detailed book index.
Among the many user-friendly features of the book are the well-organized tables and summary boxes which condense the essential facts about these charming little creatures into easy-to-find bites. The health management aspects of the book point the reader to the most common problems likely to be encountered with chinchillas, and practical advice about avoiding them and deciding when to seek the help of you local chinchilla veterinarian.
A great, but compact, book for chinchilla lovers and veterinary staff alike, and a welcome new addition to the Barron's series of pet owner handbooks. It goes alphabetically on my shelf next to Dr. Vanderlip's manual's on "Degus" and "Dwarf Hamsters."

Especially for anyone considering a tattoo of their own.......2002-10-06
Madame Chinchilla's Stewed, Screwed & Tattooed is a unique treatise on the history, practice, and art of tattooing, whether in the military, prisons, tribal rituals, or far-off lands. Enhanced with illustrations from the C.W. Eldridge Tattoo Archive and the Triangle Museum, Stewed, Screwed & Tattooed balances its unique history with fascinating vignettes ranging from the ethics of responsible tattooing, to dealing with modern-day social stigma attached to tattooing, to a variety of amazing and colorful tattooing anecdotes. Stewed, Screwed & Tattooed is very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone considering a tattoo of their own.
Stewed, Screwed and Tattooed.......2002-04-26
Madame Chinchilla is a tattoo artist in Fort Bragg, CA (that's her on the cover). The book is a collection of brief illustrated articles on various tattoo topics--women, mascetomies and cover-up tattoos; tattoo guns; a story on the various reactions to her tattoos while on vacation; tattoo conventions, etc. Most of her stories are humorous in nature but there are a few truly sad ones.
The book is informative, has plenty of pictures, and is a fun read. My only complaint is that it isn't longer (87 pages) but I understand that a sequel is in the works. Another plus factor of the book is that it came autographed by Madame Chinchilla and included her business card!
The book is a good introduction to the world of tattoos, written by someone who has a sense of humor. I highly recommend the book and am looking forward to her next one.
The 'Other Side' of Tattooing.......2000-08-03
Madame really shows the human side of the art of tattooing. The photos are excellent, with good examples of 'real' tattoos and not the typical drunken sailor jobs of the 1940s-50s which I was a part of. The "Celebration of a Scar" was an exceptional piece of work, and should be in all the medical books related to breast cancer surgery. As a 'old time'(retired) tattoo artist, I recommend this book to everyone.
Disappointing.......2000-05-15
I am currently writing a thesis about japanese tattooing traditional and modern and I bought Madame Chinchillas book as source material. I was disappointed not only with the level of inaccuracy (eg. many people in Japan have tattoos not just yakuza, they are certainly not all performed by hand, they are more often than not quietly accepted by society, she would have stayed in a "ryokan" not a "ryokin" with a "tatami" not a "tata-mi" floor, the significance of the designs extends much further than mere representations of emotions etc) but also with the level of grammatical error and superfluous use of language. Although the section on European tattoos may well have been accurate (I am no expert) I found the self-congratulatory tone and the poor english undermined my faith in the content.
Folksy book written from the heart of a woman tattooist !.......1999-04-20
Stewed, Screwed & Tattooed has long been the cheer of seafaring men. Yet a sailor's only memory of a wild night on shore may be the one that's embedded under his flesh for the rest of his life, a tattoo. Filled with intriguing illustrations from C.W. Eldridge's Tattoo Archive and the Triangle Museum, Stewed, Screwed, and Tattooed examines a multitude of topics, including tattooed women in the circus sideshows, military tattoos, social stigma & tattoos, prison tattoos, contemporary American tattoos, modern day tribal rituals, spiritual aspects of tattooing and tattoos as an alternative to implants for the woman who has experienced a mastectomy. Peppered with interviews, anecdotes, and the adventurous tattoo travels of Chinchilla and her partner Mr. G., this unique book presents an insightful look at a very personal, ancient art form.

Mostly good, but...dead wrong on corn.......2003-05-13
I shuddered when I saw the back cover with the picture of the chinchilla eating corn. According to the breeder from whom I bought our chinchilla, CORN CAN CAUSE FATAL BLOATING IN CHINCHILLAS. I even saw the painful effects of corn on a female chinchilla (she had to be euthenized). Most of the information in the book is solid, but the book lost credibility with me on this issue.
Chinchillas.......2002-12-14
This book provides some info. on chins but after reading I was disappointed with how some parts of the book were so false. Chinchillas are not nearly as neurotic as what the author states. They arn't as alarmed by other household animals either. I currently have six chinchillas, four of which were bred recently. My chins live right next to my canary's and their singing doesn't disturb the chins sleeping habit at all! Yes, chins are semidemosticated but they are not nearly as untame as what the author states. I know this for a fact because after several months of training on a rodent harness my Chile can travel anywhere with me. Of course you can't walk him like a dog but every time I put the harness on him he dosen't figit at all, and after awhile of getting use to being outside he has come to enjoy our little outings. If anyone is thinking of buying this book, you should probably do a bit more shopping, you should also talk to pet store owners, vets, or any one with a chin. to get a first hand telling of what life with a chin. is really like, which for me has been a wonderful experience!
Author shows the good and the bad of Chinchillas as pets.......2001-01-04
This book caught my eye at the pet store I work at. Having kept Chinchillas myself, I was very impressed with how thorough yet short the book is. The book is extremely accurate and detailed with regard to husbandry and makes potential keepers examine their ablities to keep such a beast. I have noticed that many people believe the book to be pessimistic, but in reality that makes the chin keeping experience more magical. The author, unlike many, puts all of the cards on the table and leaves the chinchilla owner with very few suprises. In animal keeping, suprises are not always great. Chinchillas can be difficult pets to keep, but the author, in the spirit of all honesty shows both the good and bad of chin keeping. In the many, many years that I have kept exotic animals and chinchillas this is by far the best book that I have found. I truly wish that this book had been available to me the day I first brought my little boy Cheech home, it would have definately made our life together less hectic and allowed me better to understand his needs and strange, strange habits. This is a must have for anyone who is considering a chinchilla as a companion, already keeps one or who just wants to know a little more about the crazy creatures.
Not Quite what I was hoping for..........2000-09-17
Well, I bought this book from a book store, because I thought it look like it had good info even though it was small. Leter, I regretted not reading betweeen the lines. I was appalled by the negative veiw point of chinchillas by the author. She explained that they had a tendency to be neurotic, and untamed. She ealso explained that 'if your planning on breding for a profit, think again. There are far too many chinchillas already, and you will probably end up giving them away.' I bought his book when it was fairly new, and now, almost a year later, I have two wonderful chinchillas, and my girl, phoebe is pregnant, and I already have five people lined up that would like to purchase a baby. I'm afraid I'll have to dissapoint a few by telling them to wait until the next littter! Of course, it may have a certain effect on 'us Americans'(laugh) because the author is German and it was published there first.
Informative book, but a bit pessimistic.......1999-11-08
This book gives a brief overview of chinchillas. It contains great photographs and reviews the basics about these unique creatures. After finishing the book I still had many question about having a chinchilla as a pet. The author seemed to have a bitter view of these pets that is a bit unfair.

European book, outdated, misleading on health.......1997-05-17
Mosslachers book on chinchillas is very good in its pictures and general information. In the areas of nutrition and care, however, it is misleading in some areas. It recommends products that cannot be found in the United States and has caused many US owners trying to find the product problems.
Its chapter on diseases does not go far enough and does not discuss more than just a few basics. It states that rabbit pellets are "fortified with hormones" [p31] which in the US is not true, and rabbit pellets are ok for chins in this country. It also recommends vinegar in the water to get the animal to drink more, something which is not only not necessary, but unsubstantiated as a problem with chins.

Good book.........2006-02-10
This is a great book, includes many more unusual types of rodents (jirds, degus etc). However it contains nothing about ferrets, only rodents and rabbits. This book is translated from dutch, so there are lots of errors, and the grammer can be amusing at times.

Book Description
The Decipherment of Ancient Maya Writing is an important story of intellectual discovery and a tale of code breaking comparable to the interpreting of Egyptian hieroglyphs and the decoding of cuneiform. Using classic articles taken from publications unavailable to most readers, accounts by Spaniards who witnessed the writing of the glyphs and research by twentieth-century scholars--from Tatiana Proskouriakoff to Michael Coe--this book provides a history of the interpretation of Maya hieroglyphs. Introductory essays offer the historical context and describe the personalities and theories of the many authors who contributed to the understanding of these ancient glyphs.More than two hundred line drawings illustrate the text and serve as an introduction to decipherment. This landmark work in Maya studies is the first book to examine the centuries of thought behind the decoding of Maya hieroglyphs.
