Book Description
From two noted experts-the first in-depth book on teaching your bird to talk
Teaching a bird to talk isn't as difficult as it may seem. In this easy-to-follow guide, avian experts Diane Grindol and Tom Roudybush reveal how you can communicate with your parrot far beyond "hello" and, in turn, understand what your bird is trying to communicate to you.
Teaching Your Bird to Talk compiles an impressive amount of background, training, and research regarding bird vocalizations, walking you step by step through the behavioral mechanics of training parrots to talk (as well as starlings, mynahs, and other birds). Whether you want your bird to mimic words, talk on cue, or have some understanding of what you are saying, this guide shows you the type of training you need to do with your bird. The book also takes a close look at the work of Dr. Irene Pepperberg-the world's foremost authority in the field of parrot intelligence and trainer of Alex the African Grey Parrot.
- Identifies which species of bird are likely to talk and which aren't
- Explores field research on regional languages and dialects of parrots in the wild
- Features true stories from owners of talking birds

Teaching Your Bird to Talk review.......2007-07-28
I am not quite finished with this book yet, but I am very pleased with the information and how it is presented in this book. I have read several other books on Parrots and this is by far the best one. There is more information than just teaching your bird to talk.
I highly recomment this book to anyone who owns a parrot with the potential to talk!
My parrot started to talk !.......2006-11-17
I waited more than six months after I bought this book to try the techniques inside it before I wrote my review. Although I was using some methods mentioned inside the book but this book encouraged me to keep using them and also adds some amazing methods and ideas that were very helpful, useful and easy to imply. Simply, my old African Grey Parrot started to talk, and that was my fist experience in such thing and I really feel grateful to this book and to the efforts inside it. I am giving four stars since I feel some information are ideas need proves rather than facts. However, aiming to make your African talk, buy this book and be patient.
Very good........2006-11-05
A wonderful reference and book guide for teaching a Quaker Parrot to talk.
Teaching Your Bird to Talk.......2006-02-27
When I bought this book I thought I was buying a book that would help me teach my parrot to talk. Although I do know that there are no guarantees about which bird will talk and what method works, I wanted tips and advice on how to help my parrot learn.
This books gives no such information. It covers why parrots talk, which parrots talk and lots of stories about talking parrots, but no real information on teaching my bird to talk. The only chapter I liked was the one about the Model/Rival-method, which is a detailed chapter on teaching a parrot to talk with cognition, understanding the words it uses. However, the bird must alredy be talking for this method to work.
What I wanted was an answer to these questions: Do constant, out of context, repetitions work? Does plaing a casette work? Would it help to have talking sessions? Does my tone of voice matter? How can I get my bird to talk more clearly? How can I get my bird to talk in front of strangers?
This book has good basic information for the beginner in bird care or ownership as well as advanced information........2005-08-14
Two authors have teamed up to write this book titled Teaching Your Bird to Talk. The two of them have plenty of experience with birds.
The first chapter is a "must read" for someone just thinking about bringing a bird into the family. All to often, the idea of having a pet that can talk to you, overshadows the time and commitment required to look after this pet.
To help us understand a little about talking, they give information about how and why birds make sounds. Birds that make sounds all year round instead of just at breeding times may be possible good talkers.
If a talking bird is what you are looking for, the chapter Who Talks and Who Doesn't will be of interest to you. It is also expained that not every bird in the talking list will talk, but they have the potential to talk. The birds that talk clearly are identified as well as the birds that simply do not talk. Although parrots are the most common talking birds, there is also a list of non-parrot birds that are known for talking ability.
The chapter Parrots Jump Into The Conversation contains input from several people who wrote in about conversations with their pet birds and is a lot of fun to read.
The Model/Rival Training Technique chapter explains how this method of training is used and this is the way that Alex, the famous African Grey Parrot belonging to Dr. Pepperberg was trained.
Of course, the whole book is not just about teaching your bird to talk. There is wonderful advice on general pet bird care, solving problems, playing games with your bird, and what to do if your bird turns out to be a non talker.
This book has good basic information for the beginner in bird care or ownership as well as advanced information for those who have experience with birds.

While taking his last shot to become a professional touring golfer, Jeff Taylor became entangled in an unprecedented betting scheme and found himself unofficially in the presidential election race. Except for being brutally honest, he had no other skills to run for the most important position in the world. However, Jeff found a new desire to run for president, and actually put up a fighting chance in his effort to win the election with the aid of his off-beat team members. But evil political forces deployed a comical band of thugs, attempting to squash his claim to the presidential throne using any means necessary. One Nation Under Par is a funny and fast paced story that hits a hole-in-one for virtually anyone that has interest in politics, sports, gambling, music, mild levels of absurdity, and even unusual pet tricks. So grab your clubs and enjoy the 18 hysterical holes of One Nation Under Par.

Caddy Shack - like humor with a political twist........2007-06-20
This book reminded me of Caddy Shack: wacky, silly, but with a funny political twist. The 19th hole really summed up the ending. It reads like you're watching a movie. Worth buying.
Political Golf.......2007-03-20
Really a well written, fun book about my two favorite subjects golf and politics.
Great Book.......2007-03-19
I got this book for my husband but I read it too. It was a great story to read especially on a cold winter night. I enjoyed it too and I don't play golf. I recommend it highly.
Hillarious political / pop culture / sports fusion - Great Read!!.......2007-03-05
Great book from cover to cover. The author definitely has a unique but completely appealing sense of humor.
The characters and situations are well thought out. You don't have to be a golfer or have a political vein to enjoy this. It takes you on the improbable roller coaster ride of a prospective pro-golfer as he falls head first onto the American political scene. You'll never look at the (rat)race for the White House the same way again.
I couldn't put this one down. Absolutely a MUST READ!!!
Book Description
The classic and original text that first explored the telepathic methods of communication of wild animals
• Based on years of detailed field observations, first published in 1919
• Written by the famous American naturalist who was the first to study telepathy in the wild
• Forewords by biologists Rupert Sheldrake, who has spent 15 years researching the unexplained powers of animals, and Marc Bekoff, the editor of the three-volume
Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior
Many sources have commented on the silent communication abilities of pets, but never before and not since the first publication of this book in 1919 has the subject of animal telepathy in the wild been so fully researched.
How Animals Talk explores the phenomenon of vocal, silent, and even motionless communication among animals. From crow talk to instant herd communication, author William J. Long theorizes that animals are much more intelligent, emotional, and moral than we have traditionally thought and that their ability to sense the presence of other living beings is an innate ability shared by humans as well. Based on many years of field observations, this classic text contains numerous examples of animal behavior that defy conventional explanation.
Long believed in the importance and validity of anecdotal evidence. He recognized the dangers of conventional research in reducing animals to mere numbers and how the cold third-person prose of scientific study can objectify animals, distancing "us" from "them." His findings on the impact of our presence on animal life--and the cost that we pay in separating ourselves from animals, who help define our place in the natural world--may be more relevant today than ever before.

Exceptional except for..........2006-07-07
The prior review by Getty explains overall content of the book wonderfully, so I will refrain from adding to an exceptional review. However, there is one area that was not mentioned that brought my review down to four stars.
I understand that this book was written almost 100 years ago, and people interacted with nature a bit differerently. Hunting was accepted and needed, and I understand that. However, Long writes a great deal about stalking, flushing, tracking, calling, and killing animals. He never mentions if he's killing for meat, but there are occasions when he tracks and tries to kill animals, such as wolves, that he clearly will not be eating. One example - he mentions how he kills crows when he can, for they ravage the nests of the beneficial birds who keeps gardens healthy. I found this irritating: the man feels his killing as many crows as he can is acceptable, for they destroy the birds that are beneficial to man.
I could not understand how this man, who is obviously very connected to nature and animals, could kill so easily and makes so little mention of it. I was confused, and frankly, dismayed many times as I read Long's accounts in the field, often with rifle in hand, ever ready to call a moose with his developed calling skills and then shoot the animal.
I had a hard time in places in the book due to Long's choice to hunt and kill the animals he also found so interesting, animals he clearly respected. However, in one of the later chapters, he mentions how he does not approve of killing animals, yet throughout most of the book, he never went out without his gun, often using familiar animal calls to attract animals, so he could shoot them, not just observe them. It felt contradictory. He particularly had no remorse for shooting crows and related his actions with what felt like self-satisfaction and justification.
Enchanting and Life Changing.......2006-02-21
This book, first published in 1919, is quite remarkable.
William Long was a pioneer in the then new field of animal behavior. Though he did not call it that: he was simply a naturalist who had a great love of Nature.
The book is broken into three segments. The first is "How Animals Talk." Second is "How to Know the Wood Folk," and finally "My Pond, A Symphony of the Woods." The first section is nothing short of an essay on his observations on telepathy in both wild and domesticated animals. He describes something known by a great many of us who live with animals: they often seem to know when we are coming home unexpectedly. This was written almost 80 years before Rupert Sheldrake began to generate some empirical evidence to support these observations, which he published in a number of research papers and in the book Dogs Who Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home, which I also recommend very highly. Long also describes experiments that appear to demonstrate that animals know when they are being looked at. Sheldrake has also gathered data showing this to be a real phenomenon. (See if you can wake a sleeping dog or cat by staring at them: the results are often remarkable!).
William Long talks about an African term - chumfo - that is a kind of super-sense that we and all creatures are said to possess, which is a perfect coordination of all the other senses. Something in which animals excel, and humans often do not. But this is superseded by the ability of animals to sense events at a distance. After the terrible tsunami at the end of 2004, there were multiple reports of wild animals having run to high ground before the tsunami arrived. I spent several days checking the reports to see if they were just an urban legend, but they appeared to be absolutely true. I put these observations in the same group as animals being used in China to issue earthquake warnings, and the reports in this book by William Long.
What Long is telling us in this book, and what Sheldrake's experiments seem to confirm, is that unexplained abilities like the sense of being stared at and telepathy are not paranormal, but normal, and part of our nature. Clearly if only one species had telepathic or supersensory abilities, it would have such a biological advantage that it the balance of Nature would be overturned. Not so if all animals have these abilities to some degree.
This is handsomely produced book replete with several color paintings. In addition to the text, there is a forward by Rupert Sheldrake and a Preface by the eminent animal behaviorist Marc Bekoff from the University of Colorado.
This book is enchanting and if you drink in its wisdom, it could be life changing.
Highly recommended!

Readers will gain some insight into the Objibway language and perspective - and they will see in a very powerful way that people allover the world should learn more about each other.
Book Description
Sandra Betzina, a renowned expert in the field, believes the shift from button-sewing novice to "power sewer" can be achieved with a minimum of fuss. Her Power Sewing Step-by-Step, in a handy spiral binding, does just what the title implies, leading the reader through the successful assembly process for each of a series of garments. Starting with fabric selection, in each chapter Betzina addresses pattern fitting, construction, and finishing. She includes instructions for adding special garment details. For example, in the pants chapter she offers a variety of pockets, shows how to add a lining and choose one of four zipper options, and demonstrates a method of eliminating the waistband altogether.
Customer Reviews:
I pull out this book daily........2007-10-08
Of all the excellent books that I own on the subject of sewing, "Power Sewing" is the book that I pull out every day for reference. As I make my pattern, cut it out and then assemble the garment, there is always some little trick that I recall seeing in this book that causes me to flip through the pages once again until my memory is refreshed by one of Ms. Betzina's bullet-points or by one of the pictures. There are no long paragraphs in this book -- all instructions deal directly with the matter at hand and are clearly illustrated in a format which leaves no question unanswered. Without a doubt, this book alone has guided me so that I have been producing wonderfully-constructed projects. This is a book that is practical and extremely useful for anybody that sews.
Good reference for sewing upscale clothing.......2007-09-09
This is a good book if you are an intermediate or advanced sewer looking for ways to create designer quality garments at home. The photography in this book is amazing, and is great for ideas. Power Sewing is very much geared towards mimicking upscale clothing that lasts a lifetime. Some of the techniques are good for everyday clothing, but in general if you want to follow her techniques and suggestions be prepared to spend some time and money. Many of her suggestions require using expensive materials that can be difficult to find locally.
For beginners, I suggest any of the Easy Guide to Sewing books published by Taunton. They are easier for a beginner to follow, and really go into "why", not just "how". Power Sewing is more of a manual for more experienced sewers looking to solve sewing problems.
Enormously helpful!.......2007-01-14
As someone with modest sewing skills, I have learned so much from reading this book. The techniques range from the very simple to the very complex and have practical applications for almost any apparel sewing project you can think of. The explanations are clear and well illustrated. I found the information on pattern sizes, wearing ease, and pattern testing particuarly interesting. The book is not for absolute beginners, because it assumes a basic knowledge of sewing. But if you want to move beyond the basics, this is the book for you.
A must have for every home seamstress.......2006-03-22
Power Sewing Step by Step is one of my favorite new books for sewing. It has many guidelines to organize your wardrobe and what suits your style and figure. The cutting, fitting and sewing instructions can be used for many garments. The ring type binding makes it lie flat for easy reading -- no flipping pages. The classic basics of any wardrobe are clearly addressed, and wonderful ideas for detailing that sets a garment apart. Her presentation inspires the reader to tackle a project and enjoy professional results every time. I love her tips for dealing with real figures-- for those of us over the hill.
She also creates her own patterns for Vogue Patterns, and these have a different sizing than the usual styles, for real sizes!
Your money will be wisely spent on this book.
I use this book all the time.......2006-02-24
This is my favorite sewing book-I take it out whenever I have a project. It's most useful for the advanced beginner or intermediate sewer. It focuses on techniques that either make a project easier or more polished. It's divided into types of clothing (vests, pants, dresses, etc), and Betzina focuses on techniques for that type of project. She explains techniques well and there are lots of full-color pictures. Yes, the clothes are a little out of date, but who cares? The techniques apply to whatever style you choose.
I'm an avid reader, and I admit that I've spent more time reading sewing books than I've spent sewing. Betzina includes useful techniques in here that I've never seen in any other book. And best of all, they're techniques you'll actually use because they don't take much time and they work. Thank you, Sandra Betzina!
