Book Description
Sea otters are one of the most charismatic marine mammals. Capable of living their entire lives free of contact with land, they eat, sleep, and give birth at sea. Hunted relentlessly for centuries, these appealing creatures were brought back from the brink of extinction in the twentieth century: an achievement that is being championed as one of the great success stories in marine conservation. Glenn VanBlaricom traces the turbulent history of the species and discusses their fascinating behavior. World-class photographers capture the spirit of this most lovable animal.

The book Sea Otters is written by Bobbie Kalman. This book is at a fourth grade reading level. Through this book I learned a great deal about sea otters.
In my point of view the setting is in the water outside. The book Sea Otters is an excellent book. This book is an excellent book especially if you are learning about them. I would rate this book 4 Stars out of 5 stars.
My opinion is that this book is awesome. Why? Because it tells you all about them. It also tells you how they live. Sea Otters compared to Bound for Oregon is better.
This book was so good I would want the author to include more facts about sea otters. Why? Because it takes seconds to read and you could get 100 % all the time. It also needs to be more challenging in the words and the vocabulary.
This book Sea Otters is a good book. I hope you have time to stop and read this book Please read this book. Even if you are not a fan of non-fiction you might like this book.
Very Informative.......2000-09-15
This book gives some good information about sea otters; how they might have evolved, where they live, what they eat, how various parts of their bodies function, how the "pups" are raised, the effects of oil spills and fishing nets on otter populations, human efforts to help them survive, and more. There are also quite a few adorable color photos, and a few color drawings. Recommended.

Book Description
When the Exxon Valdez struck the rocks in Prince William Sound, Alaska, nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the water. The result was an oil slick which threatened all of the area wildlife, especially the sea otters. This is the story of the animal rescue experts who went to Alaska to lend a hand. Illustrated with the author's own photographs, Sea Otter Rescue is a fascinating first-hand account of the heroic measures taken to save the lives of hundreds of sea otters.

Great Book.......2002-04-08
I have to say that this is a great book that shows you the passion an author can have for what he or she is writing about(especially if the author explains his reasoning, feelings, and regrets about his book to you !*personally*!). Not to mention the information it gives you on otters and oils spills. It teaches you how bad it can be for a disaster of this monstrous preportion to occur and why you should do all in your power to stop it. It makes you sit there and wonder what you can do to help your environment!
Sea Otter Rescue.......2000-11-16
I thought "Sea Otter Rescue: The Aftermath of an Oil Spill" was a wonderful book with universal appeal. The photographs taken by the author Roland Smith were heartwarming and sometimes disturbing. "Sea Otter Rescue" is the story of the Exxon Valdez accident in Prince William Sound in Alaska and the superhuman effort to save the lives of the sea otters affected by the oil. The author, Roland Smith, was among the volunteers who rushed to Alaska to try to save these sweet animals. This is his story and the story of the others who took part in this effort. Great humanitarian story.
Book Description
History can be exciting if you are THERE. Relive history as Carl and the eagle help save and preserve the ancient Unangan culture of the Aleutian Islands. Join Carl, a 12-year-old boy living in Unalaska, Alaska, as he is caught in a severe storm and washed up on a small deserted island and is saved by Altug. Carl comes face to face with his ancestors and discovers he is a Unangan like the very first people to come the islands, centuries before. Altug tells him stories about his ancestors and their struggle to survive the harsh environment of the islands and about the exploitation of otters and seals, for their fur, that ripped apart the Unangan culture. Altug inspires Carl to help unite the culture of the ancient world with his world today, and Carl is eager to tell people about his adventure.

Book Description
On 22 May 1941 the cruiser HMS Gloucester (The Fighting 'G') was sunk by aircraft of the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Crete. Of her crew of 807 men, only 83 survived to come home at the end of the War in 1945. It is unknown how many men went down with the ship and how many died in the sea clinging to rafts and flotsam during the many hours before the survivors were finally rescued by boats searching for German soldiers who were victims of a previous British naval attack. The fact that Allied destroyers were in the proximity and were not sent to the rescue was a result of poor naval communications and indecision by the local fleet commanders. Gloucester had been low on anti-aircraft ammunition and her crew exhausted before being dispatched from the main fleet to search for the stricken destroyer HMS Greyhound. With only HMS Fiji as company, she came under attack from German bombers and when Gloucester's ammunition was finally exhausted she suffered several direct hits and was set ablaze from stem to stern and left out of control.
This book looks at the ship's history and operational successes from her launching in 1937 to her final demise. It includes many first-hand accounts from the surviving crew and the author's painstaking research has revealed the awful truth about one of the Royal Navy's greatest disasters during World War Two.

The simple truth about a great disaster........2004-11-23
Who knows what thoughts dog a man's mind as he grows up in the knowledge that his father was killed when he was just 7 month's old. This author was denied such parenthood at that very age and grew up in the knowledge that his father was one of the 725 men who perished when HMS Gloucester was lost in 1941.
After careers in both the Royal Navy and the Police, Ken Otter then set out to research the story of the ship on which his father served and died. As someone who researches facts about ships and their final journeys for a living, I appreciate and understand the value of - and the difficulties associated with, painstaking research. In this instance, I congratulate this author on a job so very well done.
"HMS Gloucester - The Untold Story" is a complete account of this ship from her launch in 1937 right up to her loss in 1941 and should, in my own humble opinion, be accepted as the official history of this ship. That a valuable Cruiser - already low on anti-aircraft ammunition, should have been sent to the aid of a stricken Destroyer was a questionable decision in the first instance. The fact that no rescue or aid was then sent to that Cruiser once she was set ablaze from stem to stern - or even after she had sunk, just adds weight to the overall argument that those in command were not exercising their authority in a clear and concise manner. Military leaders from any of the three services may be forgiven for any personal faults in their overall makeup - but NOT for indecision!
Whilst I can understand how this particular book will have been a personal quest for the author, it is so well written and clearly so very well researched, I can only hope Mr Otter will now turn his attention to other, similar tragedies in order to provide us with further accounts where those stories still remain "untold."

Book Description
This lively book tells young readers everything they want to know about the life and behavior of the southern sea otter, its northern cousin, and lesser-known river otters. Forty color photographs by 13 exceptional wildlife photographers show the otter at work and play, while range maps show both current and historic locations of the otters. It's all here for the budding biologist or zoologist, or the just-plain-curious kid: otter methods of courtship and reproduction, eating habits, and the animal's complex relationship with humankind, including how these playful animals continue to be threatened by oil spills and the encroachment of human society. An "Otter Secrets" section presents "amazing but true" characteristics of the otter, while the "To Learn More" page points curious readers to related websites, books, organizations, videos, and DVDs.

I don't have time to write reviews but..........2004-08-12
I just had to say, in case anyone is looking for science books which can both entertain and inform their young children, this title is a delight! The illustrations are endearing, but the text is what stands out in the book, for--unlike most children's "science" twaddle out there--it is truly lyrical. Children don't need short, choppy sentences which merely regurgitate bland facts in a shotgun approach to "teaching" or "informing". That kind of writing certainly doesn't make for interesting reading! My young reader was delighted with the tale of young Otter, my 2-year-old equally enthralled. I know a book is a keeper when I am asked to read it again immediately.
This book has both literary and scientific merit. A rare find in my search for homeschool materials that can impart knowledge, love for learning and the enjoyment of reading quality prose, all in one appealing package. Not sure as I type this what age is recommended, but my son is currently about halfway through first grade level reading and will be able to tackle this by himself within a year at most. A child up to age 8 would be delighted by this book.
Terrible.......2003-04-11
This book is laborious, overwritten and poor quality. It is as if the author is trying to demonstrate how many words one can fit into a sentence. For insight into Otters, at a child's reading level, choose a different book.
A scientifically accurate, highly enjoyable tale.......2002-07-14
Otter On His Own: The Story Of A Sea Otter is a children's story by Doe Boyle about a young otter growing up in the natural world. From learning how to eat sea urchins to exploring the underwater cove near where he was born and the world beyond, Otter On His Own is a scientifically accurate, highly enjoyable tale. Simple yet inspiring color illustrations by Robert Lawson add depth to the watery world of the otter pup.

Lessons Learned in Baby Sea Otter
by Betty Tatham
Reviewed by RM McCall for The Best Book Bin
Baby Sea Otter is an exquisite non-fiction picture book exploring the life cycle of the Sea Otter. Children love to learn about animals and this book fills that bill. Each page walks you through the life cycle of the Sea Otter. I found myself saying, "Really? I didn't know that." I didn't know that the sea otter had pouches under its arms. Or, that they have the thickest fur of any animal on earth. Or, that the male otter will try to kidnap a baby for food ransom. Parents will enjoy reading this book to their little ones and the beautiful artwork will delight both parent and child. Ms. Tatham has taken real life facts and presented them in an exciting and interesting way. The baby sea otter faces many of the same things a child faces in life. The mother cares for the baby sea otter. She provides shelter and protection, until the baby grows big enough to fend for itself. As the baby grows, the days are filled with fun playing with the other pups and floating on a raft. But the tension builds when an eagle dives from the sky, thinking the baby sea otter would make a tasty evening meal. As the baby grows it ventures off on its own, but it soon realizes there are still things to learn, when it has a close encounter with a shark. At the age of three the young sea otter is ready to mate and the cycle starts all over again. This book is perfect for children 4-8 years old and for adults who enjoy the beauty of a good picture book and relish learning along with their children.
