Parents can't go wrong getting a puppy for the kid when they first look at RAISING PUPPIES AND KIDS TOGETHER, a fine manual where two top dog trainers how to socialize a puppy and teach a child pet management simultaneously. From infants through school-age kids, chapters cover the basics of how kids should interact with and play with a puppy - and how parents should monitor the interaction. From roughhousing problems to typical dog behaviors and communicating with the pet, chapters focus on dog behavior but include analysis and advise on kid interactions as well. An important owner's manual - for both puppies and kids.

This book is a "must" read for anyone who has a puppy (or adult dog) and is expecting a baby or who has a baby and planning to get a puppy. The book is a "really should read" for any responsible dog owner. There are tips and techiniques that will make your family's life with your dog much more rewarding. It is organized in a very "reader friendly" way, and for quick reference when needed

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Dog Owners (whether or not you have kids).......2005-11-22

We bought this book because we are expecting our first child in a couple of months and wanted to know how to get our 1 yr old dog ready for the new arrival. The chapter on introducing your dog to the baby is very helpful, and they provide specific training activities to prepare your dog. I also found some of the general dog behavior explanations and advice to be very valuable, whether or not you have kids. I wish we had known about this book several months ago when our dog entered his "teenage" years.

This book was not in very good shape. I was chewed on which was okay I knew that but it has a lot of markings and highlights in it. I was disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Smiled !!.......2001-08-30

How many times Ive picked up a book about dogs to read, and by the third chapter got bored.......not with this book! I find it charming, funny, USEFUL, and so entertaining! Im not looking for gossip about Movie Stars, I leave that to The GOSSIP Magazines. My interest is in Puppies, and they have more than satisfied that issue. Good luck to you guys, keep up the good work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bow-WOW!.......2001-05-01

Jan Greye and Jesse Smith, who are professional dog sitters, have written a delightful book that manages to be full of useful information--things such as which breeds will run up your vet bill and how to get a puppy to take a pill--and is at the same time a joy to read. Lots of very funny anecdotal stuff about their experiences with their doggie clients and the dogs' owners. A nice departure from all those dry, encyclopedic how-to-raise-your-puppy-from-A-to-Z volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Dog trainer's point of view.......2005-07-24

One of my clients sent me this book, and I enjoyed every word and picture. I have been a dog trainer for over 20 years, and it is very true that children and puupies are a lot alike for the first couple of years. When I had a client with well behaved children, I knew the puppy would be easy to train. When the children were brats, the puppy usually was too.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful book!.......2003-05-13

I bought this as a gift for friends who had just gotten a lab puppy. Very cute book and makes a great gift.

What a great book. Loads of information on choosing a puppy and what to do with it after. Loads of good training information. I recommend this book for anyone who is considering a puppy or have a new puppy in the home

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed........2006-12-23

As a total novice in the dog owning/training department I read every dog book I could get my hands on before our puppy came home. A lot of those books were good, but focused on house/obedience training an older puppy (4+ months). We were getting our puppy at 7 weeks and I just wasn't sure what I should be doing at this early stage. This book walks you through all of your puppy's ages starting at 8 weeks and gives you weekly projects to start working on, which I found most helpful. I now know what I can reasonably expect of such a young pup and feel that while my puppy won't learn it all right away at least I'm not sending us down the wrong path from the very beginning. I felt comfortable with the author's teaching style (calm, fun, easy-going, but authoritive) and relieved to know that it's ok to get down on the floor and roll around with your new puppy without losing your puppy's respect as her leader (as some books implied would happen). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone getting a new puppy.

5 out of 5 stars Applause from "The Dog Bible" Lady.......2006-05-09

I thought I had it all in "The Dog Bible" but this is now THE PUPPY BOOK I am going to be recommending. There are methods and ideas here that are uniquely Sarah Hodgson's and she has such a logical, kind and fun way of helping you to train your pup that you will look forward to having an active part in raising a civilized dog! This is a great gift for those friends who are first time puppy owners...you'll be doing them AND yourself a favor (their puppies won't make your life miserable!)

2 out of 5 stars Re-inventing the Wheel.......2006-11-20

While this book has some excellent information, much of it is a rehash of many other excellent dog raising and training books. The authors keep tossing up a squeaky-tog boogieman -- dog training by harsh methods -- methods that haven't been current in over twenty years. However, I would have rated the book at 3 stars if it weren't for the fact that the authors state that "there are many pet stores that guarantee the dogs they sell and are extremely responsible in choosing where their dogs come from." This is on page 65, where they actually imply that a pet store is "responsible" if it gets its puppies from a USDA licensed dealer. This is appallingly bad advice. It is NEVER a good idea to buy a dog from a pet store, unless you don't mind supporting puppy mills.

5 out of 5 stars Happy owners, happy dogs - a handy guide for new and old dog owners alike and their pups.......2006-06-07

I wish I'd had this handy guide when we first adopted our dogs from a rescue group. I know I wouldn't consider adopting a dog again without rereading this book first. This book has helped us have a better relationship with our dogs. We've been able to work with them to change behaviors that were annoying us. We used this book's problem solving tools to help our dogs understand when barking was welcome (to scare away potential intruders) and when it was not welcome (when the mailman was delivering our mail). We worked with them to make our walks comfortable rather than a struggle to keep moving by giving them time at the middle of the walk to sniff around the neighborhood. We retrained our dogs using this book's step by step method for success. We felt great about using the "kind and firm approach" described in this book. We're all happier, and I will continue to recommend this book to all dog owners. Whether you've had your dog forever (or what seems like forever like me) or you're considering adopting a dog, this innovative "guide to raising a happy, well-trained dog" gives you tips on everything from choosing the best dog to fit your personality to pinpointing problems and correcting undesirable behaviors. I found expert advice on choosing a good breeder, finding a great veterinarian, traveling with our dogs, leaving our dogs at a kennel, and pup-proofing our home.

5 out of 5 stars An informative and "pet owner friendly" guide to selecting and training the perfect dog for a family.......2006-05-07

Collaboratively authored by the team of Lynn Lott, Jane Nelsen, and animal behaviorist Therry Jay, Pup Parenting: A Guide To Raising A Happy, Well-Trained Dog is an informative and "pet owner friendly" guide to selecting and training the perfect dog for a family. Providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the many and varying canine breeds, Pup Parenting can be invaluable in determining which one is best for a particular family, as well as assessing the personality of the new doggy pal, and curing the immediate obedience troubles which might be encountered. Pup Parenting diligently and knowledgeably carries its readers through the wonderful world of canine companion ownership and the positive effects which dogs might have on familial relationships. Pup Parenting is very highly recommended for all readers wanting to make sound and informed decisions with respect to puppy selection and care for themselves and their families.

5 out of 5 stars bad dog to good.......2006-03-20

Rebeccasreads highly recommends PUP PARENTING as an instructive & entertaining guide into the modern ways of raising loving & responsible canine companions.

Gone are the "leader of the pack-rule by dominance & fear" ways of the past. Now it's all about who REALLY needs the training -- or re-training -- & how to transform your over-indulged, out-of-control family member by first & foremost looking at how YOU behave!

With a firm & affectionate attitude the authors cover everything from puphood to caring for your beloved friend at the end.

They also involve you, the reader, by asking you to "step back" & take some long & serious looks at how you run your home life & your family members. Don't worry, there are many funnily dreadful tales & lots of gladsome successes that will have you wagging your tail!

        Book Description

A leading veterinarian guides prospective dog owners through each stage of a typical puppy's development. He starts with the crying and soiling eight-week-old, newly acquired from the dog breeder, then progresses to the frisky, often too-energetic six-month-old pooch who expresses himself by chewing rugs and fabrics. Inexperienced dog owners who have misgivings about their puppy-parenting aptitudes will find advice and assurance in this book's pages. They will also have the opportunity to compare their dog parenting experiences with real-life case studies, highlighted by Dr. Miller's own chronicle of how he parented his troublesome border terrier, Betty, gradually transforming her into a happy, healthy, and obedient pet. He recounts the problems he faced, and the solutions he found. He also emphasizes that puppy care entails much more than obedience training. At least as important is maintaining the dog's health. He outlines steps every dog owner can take to prevent canine health problems and goes on to offer methods to remedy them when they occur. Color photos throughout.
