Please Oh Please Can We Get a Dog? The Parents' Guide to Dog Ownership.......2005-09-14
DOG WORLD MAGAZINE -- BOOK REVIEW -- October, 2005
Reviewed by Janine Adams
This engaging, informative book is a terrific resource for parents who are considering buying a dog for their children. It opens astutely by positing, "Two of the most dreaded questions children ask their parents are: Where do babies come from? [and] Please, oh please can we get a dog?"
Peterson, a dog trainer, fully understands how children can benefit from having dogs in their lives. But she wants to help educate parents about the commitment a dog requires. She gives them a reality check when it comes to expecting the children to care for the dog, endeavoring to make sure that potential first-timers know that dogs should never be purchased on impulse.
Peterson has written something unique: a book specifically designed for parents to read before the dog is purchased. As such, there's room for great detail on some important topics that can help keep parents from making a big mistake. She takes the reader through a series of realistic questions. (Will your family's leisure activities accommodate a dog? Can you afford to keep a dog? Is your marriage healthy?) She even devotes a chapter to helping parents decline those pleading puppy requests.
For the parents who get through the first few chapters and still want a dog, Peterson includes detailed pages on how to choose a breed (including a comprehensive table of breeds prone to a variety of genetic diseases); where to purchase and equally importantly, where not to purchase a dog; and how to find and recognize a reputable breeder, even when reading a newspaper ad. She paints a clear picture of what a responsible breeder is, and what puppy buyers can expect from a breeder. Then she helps the reader prepare the house for the new dog.
This is the perfect book for the responsible parent trying to find the very best way to answer the daunting title question. That answer may well be no. But if it's yes, this book will help parents and children make the very best of that decision.

Excellent book for parents.......2005-09-13
"The spiritual and emotional connection that we have with our dogs doesn't just happen. The process begins long before you bring a dog home, and Cheryl Peterson's "Please Oh Please Can We Get A Dog?" is the perfect manual to help parents prepare their children (and themselves) for adding a four-legged member to the family. Peterson leads you through the process, helping you ask the right questions to find the right dog to match your family's lifestyle, and then to help you provide proper stewardship for the life of the dog. With Peterson's help, your family will be rewarded richly with the unconditional love and loyalty that only a dog can give.

not really aimed at kids and dogs.......2005-08-29
we bought this book but were disappointed because it really was not aimed at parents with kids. it was just a general dog book. it was aimed more for a single person getting a dog. there wasnt' much mention of kids and there needs at all.
Very Helpful.......2005-07-09
This is a must read for any dog loving family. The author is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about dogs and the families they are coupled with. She takes a prospective dog purchasing family through all the steps needed to make a decision as to type of dog they should bring into their home, if any at all. My family has been lucky enough to have a dog with us for many years. My children have grown and moved on. They are looking to introduce a dog into their family. I was happy to present them with this book.
An Outstanding Resource.......2005-07-07
My family found the book to be very beneficial as it helped to guide us through the process of getting a dog and opened our search to other areas other than the newspapers and pet shops. The author explains how to research your life so that the dog you are looking for complements it. She also explains how to research the breed for health and temperament problems and gives many questions that should be asked of breeders with sample answers that we should receive in return. Working with breeders can be intimidating and this book helped to ease our fears because it explained what we really needed to know in order to work with breeders and organizations to get a dog. I think anyone looking for a family pet will benefit from reading this book.

Book Description
Becky has always lived with her family in a log cabin in the Yukon, but when the fur market dwindled away, her father, a dog musher and trapper, had to quit trapping and she and her family moved into town. Now her father is depressed: he doesn't laugh or talk to anyone. He tires easily and can't stand any noise or stress. Worse, he has lost interest in sled racing — a love that he and Becky once shared. When spring comes, the family decides to go back to their cabin for the summer. Becky's mother hopes that going back to the mountains will cheer up Dad, but Becky has another plan. She's going to train her own dog team to race in the Junior Quest, a challenging five-day dog race across Alaska, in hopes of making her father happy.
The journey to the cabin will be a test for both Becky and her dogs. Will they make it to the cabin before the ice breaks? Will her mother give up on her father if he doesn't get better soon? And will her parents discover the secret that she has been keeping from them?

Excellent Book!.......2005-07-04
This isn't the kind of book that I normally read; I usually lean more towards fantasy, (CS Lewis, JRR Tolkein), but this was very well written.
The book is set in Yukon, Canada, and is the story of a young girl who dreams of mushing dogs. The imagry is beautiful, and the storyline is clear and captivating.
If you're looking for something to read to your children, any age, this is definitely worth looking at.
The reason for the four stars (as upposed to five) is that it IS a children's book, and not something I would normally read.
Great book.......2005-07-04
Normally this isn't the kind of book I read as I'm more into fantasy, but I really enjoyed this. I loved the characters who were very realistic. The reason I took off a star is because as I said up above, I like books to be a bit longer. I'd definitelly recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read.

Won't waste money - nonsense........2006-09-05
What a waste of money. Don't bother buying this book, in fact I will be avoiding anything written by this author (We have another one of his - an older one and the thinking has not changed in this one one bit). IMO, There are way superior books for kids, parents and families on how to get started with training that are more dog and people friendly and will acheive the same results.
Parents don't buy this book!.......2000-03-07
This book has cute pictures which may interest children, but its text is inaccurate and incomplete. If you use these methods on any breed other than a small toy breed you may end up with problems in the long run. Instead read "Puppy Preschool" by John Ross and Barbara McKinney.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Thundering Zeus uses an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to resolve one of the greatest puzzles in all of Hellenistic history. This book explores the remarkable rise of a Greek-ruled kingdom in ancient Bactria (modern Afghanistan) during the third century B.C. Diodotus I and II, whose dynasty emblazoned its coins with the dynamic image of Thundering Zeus, led this historic movement by breaking free of the Seleucid Empire and building a strong independent state in Central Asia. The chronology and crises that defined their reigns have been established here for the first time, and Frank Holt sets this new history into the larger context of Hellenistic studies.
The best sources for understanding Hellenistic Bactria are archaeological, and they include a magnificent trove of coins. In addition to giving a history of Bactria, Thundering Zeus provides a catalog of these coins, as well as an introduction to the study of numismatics itself. Holt presents this fascinating material with the precision and acuity of a specialist and with the delight of an admirer, providing an up-to-date full catalog of known Diodotid coinage, and illustrating twenty-three coins.
This succinct, energetic narrative thunders across the history of Hellenistic Bactria, exhuming coins, kingdoms, and customs as it goes. The result is a book that is both a history and a history of discovery, with much to offer those interested in ancient texts, archaeology, and coins.
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating Bactrian Beginnings Through Coinage.......2000-06-18
Holt does an excellent job of updating the Beginnings of the Hellenistic Bactrian kingdom. His book is a much needed repair of the misinformation spread in the beginning of Tarn's otherwise enjoyable book The Greeks in Bactria and India. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Jumpin Jehoshaphat.......2000-05-04
Frank Holt continues his assault on the deity of Alexander in this well-researched followup to "Alexander the Great and Bactria." Holt looks at the foundation and early history of Hellenistic Bactria, starting with the Diadochi. His analysis of the data - including a careful reappraisal of the oft misleading numistics - is fairly convincing. A good book for anyone interested in Central Asia in antiquity, ancient India, and modern historiography of Alexander of Macedon.
Splendid........2000-02-29
A full effort employing a variety of source materials, good methodology, and inviting prose.

Book Description
Harold B. Mattingly has always helped direct numismatic and epigraphical studies, and his work has often sought and defended unorthodox positions in the fields of numismatics and epigraphy. Here is a collection of his numismatic papers, with short introductions written by the author, revisiting his arguments. Gathered into an easily accessible volume, this collection of essays ranges over the field of Greek and Roman coinage, presenting a series of papers that helped change our interpretations of numismatic evidence. Because many of these papers are hard to find, collecting them in one volume will be of particular use to libraries, graduate students, and scholars.
Harold B. Mattingly is a retired Professor of Ancient History at Leeds University, and current president of the Royal Numismatic Society.
