Book Description
The new, third edition of the "gold standard" in the field has been completely revised and updated, reflecting large animal internal medicine as it is practiced today. In a single, comprehensive volume, it covers virtually everything the busy practitioner needs to know on the subject. Using a problem-oriented approach to the diagnosis of diseases of horses, cattle, sheep, and goats, it teaches readers how to diagnose based on what they observe and what the laboratory and diagnostic tests reveal. Complete lists of common, less common, and uncommon diseases associated with particular signs or symptoms are given in easy-to-find boxes, and the clinician is given an approach to each manifestation of disease and a method to work toward a diagnosis. Readers will also find guidance on treating problems symptomatically, a method that is commonly used in everyday practice. In addition, interpretation of abnormalities is made easier with complete lists of diseases associated with a given laboratory abnormality provided in handy boxes.

Horses have no place in this book.......2005-07-09
I believe that a vast amount of viable space is wasted on horses in this book. While they technically are large animals, they're so vastly different from cattle that they deserve and have their own books which are great.
I think this book isn't very well written and doesn't go into the pathology of diseases very well... at all. I hate the layout, and I think some ideas are just skimmed over or not mentioned at all.
I would not recommend this book, but the problem is there isn't another one out there.
An invaluable reference for large animal medicine.......2004-01-05
This textbook is, in my experience, the best single medicine reference for large animals. It is designed for the graduate veterinarian and is not easy to read, but contains an immense amount of information (plus references) in a usable format. The index is comprehensive, which is useful as some conditions are discussed by different authors in disparate sections of the text. The text is divided into body systems, then subdivided into equine and ruminant diseases. There are also useful rule-out lists for major clinical signs provided at the beginning of the book. The illustrations and photographs are black-and-white and are largely the same as the previous edition, but this edition contains well-updated text material. Detractors from this text include minimal specific treatment information for some disease processes and the lack of a formulary. It also does not cover swine or camelid species. Nonetheless, I find this book far easier to read and use (with more comprehensive information) than the similar Blood and Radostits text. If you care to invest in several texts instead of a single one, try the Current Veterinary Therapy Equine Practice and Food Animal Practice (very easy to read). However, if you choose these keep in mind that you may need more than one volume of each, as each CVT volume is not comprehensive. My copy of Smith is constantly at hand, and has seen a great deal of use since I purchased it. I recommend this book to any large animal practitioner as a necessary reference.

Wrong Authors..........2007-01-19
The book is fantastic...the web site has the wrong authors listed. It should say Rose and Hodsgon...not McKeever
Manual of Equine Practice 2nd Edition.......2000-05-22
A handbook to rival the most extensive textbooks devoted to equine veterinary medicine and surgery! The second edition of The Manual of Equine Practice still retains the same easily readable format as the first edition, but the original authors have gathered world renowned experts in their fields, to assist.
The book is divided into body systems and includes individual conditions as 'sub-chapters'. They are then broken down into history and presenting signs, clinical findings and diagnosis, differential diagnosis (invaluable reference), and treatments. This is the same format as you would use if a animal were presented to you in your practice.
Overall, a superb book and completely invaluable for vets, vet techs and students. Perhaps the only drawback is that I wouldn't recommend it for the average owner and/or trainer, unless they have a very good understanding of veterinary practice in general.

Large Animal Internal Medicine (National Veterinary Medical Series for Independent Study)
ASIN: 0323009786 |
Book Description
Based on the authoritative book by the same author, Large Animal Internal Medicine, this condensed field guide is a handy reference that provides the most essential information students and practitioners need to know about common diseases in large animal species. The first section focuses primarily on what has come to be known as a hallmark of the larger text: discussion of clinical signs. This emphasis guides the reader toward accurate diagnosis and treatment based on presenting manifestations. The second section features brief, monograph-like discussions on a variety of common problems. Each specific disorder includes a discussion of assessment, diagnosis, and medical management. Helpful summary tables and an invaluable section on poisoning that includes monographs of toxic plants, animals, metals, and pesticides, industrial toxicants, drug overdose, and feed additives.

Equine behaviour: The complex made plain.......2000-12-29
Mills and Nankervis display a rare talent for synthesising the complex, and frequently contradictory, theories of the origins and application of horse behaviour. A prolific author and speaker, Mills's teaching expertise is evident in the frequent examples of definitions or issues which arise in the various fields of study. The practical approaches to learning and welfare make this book a keeper. Nankervis is a lecturer in equine physiology at De Montfort University and founder of the Equi-Tutor distance learning programme. The authors' combination of talents means that the reader can absorb their explanations of such terms as "receptor adaptation", "neotenisation" or "simple and composite signals." The reading level is appropriate for a pony-mad 14-year old and up. Its chapter sub-divisions are logical and well-organised. Succinct steps are given for an analysis of problem behaviours together with alerts for other interpretations and modifying aspects. The link between the causes of behavioural reactions and their expression is memorably demonstrated. The beady-eyed horse drawings (the artist is, alas, unidentified) amuse and inform. Similar line drawings are used to illustrate the anatomy of taste buds or the ear, or the spinal cord or brain or neuronal components and connections. The uniformity of style gives the book a clean look. The list of references are short, covering both scientific and popular sources. The tables and graphs are well chosen, uncluttered, and sometimes cleaner refinement of the original. It was gratifying to see the author's diplomatic correction of the terminology used by popular trainer, Monty Roberts, in his "join up" presentations. Roberts refers to the mouth actions of the horse under pressure as "Don't hurt me, I'm a grazing animal" signals. In fact, as Mills and Nankervis point out, they are more likely to be submission, or, as I prefer to call it, "deference" signals given by horses to each other and sometimes other animals or humans. There were some oversights in the text. The ill effects of lungeing horses based on ages and stages of handling could have been emphasised and detailed. The approaches to weaning, while standard, did not detail the safer, kinder one of gradual transition via the social group of all ages. This approach is hinted at in the description of weaning in the wild. The authors make no mention of transport problems. Of all the management practices, transport confronts the horse with the most sustained challenges to its behaviour and health. Nearly 100 years of motorised transport have brought few adjustments to eliminate the problems of horse and handler during transport. Each chapter concludes with stimulating questions inviting further observation, experiment, and refinement. Although Daniel Mills invites correspondence on the topics raised, the printers have forgotten to include his address. We can assume that he is still at the school of agriculture at De Montfort University, Lincoln. This is an excellent book, with much current information, and a resume and resolution of historical background on many issues such as ethology vs. psychology, or nature vs nurture.

Customer Reviews:
Ok, but needs more variety.......2007-04-03
I just purchased this book so I haven't really made any of the projects yet. There are some cute projects in the book, such as one for Halloween, Christmas and, 4th of July. The mantel coverings are paper-pieced (which I like). However, they seem to just change the colors and the paper-pieced blocks. I guess I was expecting a little bit more variety since the name of the book is Quilts for Mantels "& More".
Good designs, but somewhat difficult to follow.......2004-11-02
While I enjoyed the designs in this book and got many ideas, I found the actual following of putting the quilts together difficult. It seemed that I was jumping back and forth between the actual pattern I was making and the basic instructions in the front of the book. I understand that making it to one's own desired size is difficult to cover but I ended up calculating all of my own setting and corner triangles.
This is a great book! Easy and Fun!.......2002-09-19
This is a great book! With all the quilt pattern books out there, it's so nice to see something new. The author presents the patterns in a fun, easy to read style. You want to make every design! I hope she releases more designs in a follow-up edition.
