A staple for children's gifts.......2005-10-31
I don't know how many copies of this book I've purchased over the years to give away as gifts for all the children I've encountered through family and friends. It's a wonderful story that breathes tolerance, humility, and respect and appreciation for one's differences. This is one of my favorite books! It's visually stimulating and speaks so much to the tradition of oral storytelling in Mexican culture. I also love the fact that the Lucia is gorgeous, and brown with deep black hair. It's empowering for little girls of color to see a strong protagonist of color---my students love her and connect with her character.
Beautiful Book.......2003-08-25
This is a powerful and beautiful retelling of this story. This book is written in Spanish and in English and anyone interested in Latino storytelling will buy this book for their collection. I also highly recommend DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM! by Cuban author, Mayra L. Dole, and TRINOS CHOICE, by Chicana author Diane Bertrand.
beautiful story with strong female protagonist.......2000-09-22
Unlike the usual simpering heroine, Lucia is strong, mysterious, natural, and good. Children who are different from others--foreign, language difficulty, intelligence higher or lower--will appreciate how this stranger bounced back from hurt.
A beautiful tale of forgiveness and respect.......2000-06-16
This retelling of the Legend of Lucia Zenteno is beautifully illustrated with vibrant colors and imagination. The text is given in English and Spanish. It is the story of Lucia who has the most beautiful long hair. It is so beautiful that the river that runs throught the town falls in love with her, and when the people of the town, because of their fear, drive her away, the river and all its inhabitants leave with her. The town has to learn humility and they try to get her to return. A wonderful book with a strong female hero.

Book Description
Raven, the trickster, wants to give people the gift of light. But can he find out where Sky Chief keeps it? And if he does, will he be able to escape without being discovered? His dream seems impossible, but if anyone can find a way to bring light to the world, wise and clever Raven can!
Customer Reviews:
Raven -Great childrens book.......2007-06-26
A classic Native American tale with brightly colored pictures.I have searched for this book for several years to replace an old worn copy.
I was very excited to find it through Amazon.
Raven.......2005-03-25
Raven the trickser wants to give people the gift of light.
Raven gives light but you have to read the book to find out what else happens.
glorious, sumptuous and respectful.......2003-07-12
I get antsy when Native American themes and stories appear in children's books. Too often they reek of cultural misappropriation.
But this beautiful book--gorgeous watercolor backgrounds to the Northwest Native American-style imagery--feels respectful, and does a great telling of a favorite Tlingit Haida tale of how light came into the world.
The illustration of the morphing of the Sky Chief's spoiled grandson back into Raven is particularly effective. And when Raven fills the sky with the sun in his beak, it's very easy to buy into this story as a valid creation myth.
I've now bought three copies of this book for various pre-schoolers I know, and all my grown-up friensd who've seen this book have fallen in love with it, too. This is a definite winner, bound to become as classic in its own way as Robert McCloskey's ``Blueberries for Sal.''
They ask to listen to it again and again!.......2000-01-03
The children in my Pre-K class cannot get enough of this book. The magic of the illustrations and the text has them mesmerized. Many times, when we have finished reading the story, they want to here it again!
Beautiful Illustrations.......1999-07-01
This is a wonderful book! My daughter and I really enjoyed the way that this tale was re-told and the illustrations were beautiful!

Book Description
Superb, finely detailed full-color reproductions of rare portraits, the first of their kind by an American painter. These 24 cards comprise an extraordinary gallery of realistically depicted American Indians of various tribes, shown in authentic costumes and regalia. Identifying captions and descriptive notes.
Book Description
Taken from her family on the Yankton Sioux Reservation at the age of eight and sent to a school far from home, Gertrude is forced to become "civilized"--to give up her moccasins, her long hair, and her language, and to renounce her Sioux heritage. As an adult, she renames herself Zitkala-Sa, which means "Red Bird," and devotes her life to fighting for justice for Native Americans. Her powerful and memorable story, told in her own words, will inspire anyone who has ever dreamed of making a difference.
"A remarkable story....Red Bird's own words bring her anguish and confusion to life." --Booklist
"A nearly seamless blend of autobiography and biography." --Joseph Bruchac
Customer Reviews:
A true representation of the Indian plight........2000-10-10
Wonderfully told story of a special Native American Indian girl and her journey toward womanhood. When Gertrude is eight years old she is sent to a school for Indian children run by Quakers, this is the beginning of the end of her life as it has been. She encounters prejudice for the first time and learns that white people aren't what they always seem to be. As Gertrude grows and becomes more confident she becomes a wonderful orator and representative for the Native American people. This book would be excellent for children to read so they may understand how Native Americans felt about their treatment at the hands of the white man. I think this book would be an excellent source to use in history classes to show children how the Indians felt when they were forced to give their land to white settlers and move onto reservations.

More than fiction........2004-05-15
This book is based on the author's research at a real Pow-Wow. A man who was there was able to identitfy several of his relatives from the art work. This book is not only accurate but captures the feel of a Pow-Wow. This out-of-print book needs to be reprinted.
The art work is beautiful.
Great new knowledge for kids!.......1998-03-03
This book is great new knowledge for kids. Many kids today have an almost "extinct" image of Native Americans, wearing feathers and breechcloths in a very distant past. This book highlights the real life story of today's urban Native Americans who live in a city but still celebrate their heritage and culture. The lead character, Katie, is shown getting in a station wagon with her family, all excited about the upcoming pow-wow. Kids see a Katie living a lifestyle similar to theirs while learning about her cultural heritage. I think the book is great and a very much needed update on today's Native Americans.
Book Description
These stories come down from very ancient times. Grandfathers told them to their grandchildren, and they to their grandchildren, and so on from mouth to mouth. In 1913, George Bird Grinned, one of the most famous ethnographers of the late nineteenth century, published this volume.

REVIEW QUOTES.......2001-09-05
These lucid stories of creation, nature, ethnic relations and ethnic conflicts, related to Victor Montejo by his family and the elders of his Guatemalan village, are illustrated with images reproduced from ancient Mayan artifacts. Although useful in reconstructing the history and anthropology of the Maya, the tales can also be enjoyed by readers of all ages and backgrounds.
"The book's illustrations...help connect ancient Mayan myths with the oral tradition that persists today. Mr. Montejo's introduction to this tradition is a gift that outsiders should treasure." --The New York Times Book Review
"...all the stories offer a satisfying blend of humor and wisdom. This engaging anthology provides adults and children with rare insights into one of the cultures that make up the tapestry of contemporary Southern California." --Los Angeles Times Book Review
"Interesting graphics from Mayan sources help underscore the essential originality of this volume." --Library Journal
"...THE BIRD WHO CLEANS THE WORLD is one of the few books to capture the oral Mayan tradition, making it also a crucial study of pre-Columbian beliefs." --The Bloomsbury Review
a wonderful look at Mayan values.......1999-11-28
This short book tells us stories which tell us a great deal about Mayan culture and values amongst the Jakaltek-Maya in Guatemala. These stories reinforce values of community, ecology, the perils of laziness, and above all...RESPECT for elders. Sometimes these fables seem to have no moral whatsoever, but nonetheless, are usually entertaining. As the importance of the oral tradition amongst Mayan peoples is gradually deteriorating due to modernization, Montejo gives us a wonderful glimpse at Mayan fables, and the values they pertain to.

A fantastic book.......1999-07-08
This is really the definitive book for novice birdwatchers in India, and remains very useful even as you grow more experienced. Its small size makes it much more portable and thus useful for field trips. The illustrations in the new edition are simply lovely and improve tremendously over those in the earlier editions. A must buy.
An absolute must for all bird watchers in India........1998-10-25
Beautiful hand drawn illustrations, detailed characteristics, habitat, calls and everything else you need to know to identify a bird. A real work of art.

Customer Reviews:
This Book + Your Creativity= Great Rooms!.......2003-01-26
As someone who has endlessly watched design shows like Trading Spaces and While You Were Out for ideas, I feel at a loss when it comes to actually making those projects happen. This book focuses on not so much design, but the "how to" on how make the projects happen. The book is filled with projects such as various moulding and painting techniques. One can get ideas for stenciling, tiling, wallpaper, windows, doors, etc... The beginning of the book give basic design styles and color schemes that usually go along with them. The projects are easy to follow. This book won't help you pick out a theme or interior design, but if you use your creativity and design ideas, you can make just about anything happen.
Very low-brow in terms of style.......2002-02-26
I guess I thought that a book with the word 'decorating' in the title would be more stylish than this. If you want a decorating book (a book full of ideas), do NOT buy this one. What this is is a mishmash of projects using decorative objects or materials. So, it teaches how to do faux finishes or how to install lighting but there is never any information on how to decorate. If you want to see rooms or get the 411 on how everything goes together in design terms, this is not the book you want.
Excellent reference for home decorating and painting.......2002-02-08
_Decorating 1-2-3_ begins with the "Color and Style" section. This section explains the colors, hues, tones and intensities used in the "Seven Basic Styles." The theme of these styles continue to re-appear throughout the book.
Country style homes are comfortable, efficient, work places. Common everyday objects (antique tools, garlic cloves, pots and pans) adorn the walls. Paints imitate colors created in a simpler age using milk, dirt, and metal oxides. Colonial style, like George Washington's Mount Vernon home are decorated with furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries and use more sophisticated historical colors developed in Europe. Other styles described are Southwestern, Traditional, Victorian, Arts & Crafts, and Contemporary.
The book is better organized than most on the market. Eight sections of the book are color coded and can be seen even when the book is closed. Step-by-step intructions with clear photographs cover a great variety of activities including cleaning a paintbrush, hanging doors, stenciling a floor, and resurfacing an old tub.
This book has been very helpful in many of my projects. I especially found the section on faux painting handy for my office at home. The information in this book is very dense and fills over 400 pages. This is the most comprehensive book on decorating I have seen. It is also a good value!
So-so.......2001-05-08
This book is not a book I would refer to for ideas on decorating style. I guess I can't expect Home Depot to offer much in that area. It does offer good how-to-do-it instructions for specific projects. So, I give it a C-minus.
More than 100 decorating projects.......2001-02-01
The Home Depot Decorating 1-2-3 is a comprehensive, "user friendly" instructional resource for anyone seeking to make their home or apartment look better by guiding them step-by-step through a spectrum of more than 100 decorating projects ranging from painting woodwork and trim to stenciling a wall. Enhanced throughout with color photography and more than 450 decorating tips, each project was reviewed for accuracy by Home Depot associates. Ideal for the novice and with much to commend it to even the seasoned and experienced home redecorator, The Home Depot Decorating 1-2-3 is a very highly, easy-to-follow "how to" reference for anyone seeking to spark creative interior design and decoration ideas.

A great book to start scrapbooking with........2003-11-18
There were many things I enjoyed about this book. It gives many clear and not cluttered examples. It is very easy to understand along with providing different uses for the basic scrapbooking supplies. The pictures were great and I would not classify this as a childrens book either.
Great Beginner Book.......2003-01-24
What I like most about this book is that it presents the basics of scrapbooking in a well-written, simplistic format. All of the essential elements that experienced adult scrappers use are introduced page-by-page on a beginner's level. There are also many lettering and die cut examples to use, as well as simple lay outs to jump start one's creativity. i would not classify this as a "kids" book, but rather a primer on the art of scrapbooking. Well written and very colorful (something kids of all ages can appreciate!).
Cris Cunningham
Great Book!.......2001-03-14
This is a great book for the kids to get ideas and has great layout ideas. You can even provide feedback and get a small gift. There is step by step instructions on how the kids can get started complete with lettering and croping.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book for Beginning Painters.......2003-05-08
This is indeed a wonderful book. Several sections are not about decorative painting specifically, but about painting in general. These sections are clearly laid out with pictures and lists of equipment needed. They were absolutely perfect for my fiancee and myself - we just bought our first home and have a lot of work to do! This book helped us learn how to sand walls, prime, remove wallpaper, and finally, paint. There's plenty in here for decorative painting too, but if you're just starting out and need a great reference, buy this book!
A practical guide for inexpensive & creative painting soluti.......2002-06-21
The Home Depot has done it again-- provided homeowners with a practical guide for inexpensive and creative solutions for our painting needs! Reminding us that 80% of project time is in the preparation, the book is chock full of tips such as safety, tool selection and organization, and the basics of painting a surface.
The book is comprised of six main sections, plus safety and paint basics, which more than covers the questions you might have as a beginning or experienced painter. Choosing colors, tools and materials, preparing to paint, room painting basics, decorative painting techniques, and cleaning up are discussed at length, making this a comprehensive resource for your painting success.
