Book Description
With more emphasis than usual on the behavior of vertebrates and primates (although the author still includes classic bird and insect studies) the book examines how wild animals live, survive, and reproduce in their natural, wild habitats. This unique approach is presented in a straightforward manner without jargon, ensuring that students find the text informative and entertaining. Well-placed examples and explanations provide students with further opportunity to understand the application of the concepts.

My Favorite Psych Text.......2006-03-21
This is my favorite psych text. Usually my books are huge and boring but this one is pretty interesting and short. It provides a lot of information without giving too much detail. The biggest problem is that I shouldn't have had to pay so much for a 7-year old textbook.
text for psych majors.......2000-11-28
I have taught a college-level Animal Behavior class for 15 years. Because I teach in a Psych Dept, not a Bio Dept, I have always had trouble finding a text that my students could easily relate to. I am now going to switch to this text. Yes, it is presented at a very easy, accessable level: there are no detailed charts or diagrams or in-depth analyses, and it is HALF the length of my current text. But compared to other texts, it covers more mammals (fewer invertebrates) and has an entire section devoted to primates- including a chapter on evolutionary psychology. I have found that Psych students, most of whom want to go into counseling of some sort and have never had an Intro Bio class, have no proper background for the more advanced texts and are intimidated by them. I believe this text will attract more students who are otherwise scared of science; I would rather have them take the class than not take it! I can always supplement in the classroom. Furthermore, I do not agree with the other reviewer that the author contradicts himself or that he makes mistakes.
A high school text book.......1999-12-07
This 'text' is a horrible assessment of animal behavior. It attempts to cover all aspects of the subject matter, but contridicts itself throughout. This is truly a first edition. The author, editor, and publisher must have been in a rush to produce this. It reads as a high school text book in that it touches upon a bunch of subjects and studies, but never explains them. This is an amateur attempt at describing animal behavior, not to mention that this book is extremely overpriced. Don't waste your time or money on this worthless publication.

Neuroendocrinology: An Integrated Approach
ASIN: 0521426650 |
Book Description
Neuroendocrinology is a multidisciplinary subject on the interaction between the brain and endocrine system and the influence of this interaction on the behavior of animals and humans. This book is designed as an introductory text in neuroendocrinology. It outlines the basics of endocrinology, including the endocrine glands, the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus, and their interactions. It also describes the action of neurotransmitters in the nervous system, the action of neuropeptides as chemical messengers, and the interaction among hormones, neurotransmitters, and neuropeptides. It also introduces the important new field of neuro-endocrine-immunology and contains a chapter on behavioral neuroendocrinology. The level of presentation is suitable for undergraduates who have completed introductory biology or psychology classes, and each chapter contains review questions based on material in that chapter and essay questions for further in-depth study.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction in plain English.......2006-05-15
This book is exactly what I was looking for: a simple, accessible introduction to basic neuroendocrinology, written by someone who has experience of what beginning learners need and how to present it to them. Once I have finished this book, I will move on to more complex and more up-to-date texts. But this book will have given me the foundation on which to build.
My purpose in pursuing this subject is probably atypical from the medical and biology students. My wife has a complex of medical conditions with multiple diagnoses in the area of neuroendocrinology, and most likely more diagnoses yet to come. Most of the advances we have made have been via my research on the internet and studying medical textbooks. My interest is not theoretical and professional, but personal and pragmatic. I need to understand neuroendocrinology in order to model this very complex system in silico, as a computer scientist, to better understand it and to better guide her to reliable diagnoses and more effective treatment.
Had this book been updated in the last few years, I would have given it five stars.
Hopelessly out of date.......2006-02-21
If my prof hadn't written this book I am sure we wouldn't be using it. We have the benefit of new figures that have been created in the past ten years. Anyone else that uses this book needs their head examined.
Not bad, but needs updated.......2004-02-11
I bought this book for a graduate course called Neuroendocrinology. While the textbook is easy to understand, complete with diagrams to illustrate main points crucial to neuroendocrinology, the book is outdated. It needs to be revamped: the pictures need to be put in color (we're in the 21st century now, come on) and recently developed techniques as well as the research from those techniques need to be included. The publishers need to work on it!

Animal Eyes (Oxford Animal Biology Series)
ASIN: 0521498902 |
Book Description
This main goals of this text are to provide undergraduates with a working vocabulary and knowledge of the biology of vision and to acquaint them with the major themes in biological vision research. Part I treats the eye as an image-forming organ and provides an overview of the projections from the retina to key visual structures of the brain. The second part builds on this material, examining the functions of the retina and its central projections in greater detail. Part III addresses certain advanced topics in vision. This book is intended for use in a course for undergraduates in biology, neuroscience, or psychology who have had an introductory course on the nervous system. It is also useful as an ancillary graduate-level text.
Customer Reviews:
Great text book.......2007-02-15
This book totally covered the material in my neurology of vision class. Well written and thorough.
Excellent introduction to vision.......2005-01-03
This is a short and sweet introduction to the invertebrate and vertebrate visual systems. Given the small size of this book, its breadth of coverage and clarity of presentation are remarkable. The author should be commended for covering the physics of vision alongside with its anatomy and physiology. I own a copy of this book and highly recommend it as the best introductory text for anyone who enters the field.
Book Description
edited from the author's posthumous works by
Agnes von Cranach
translated by
Robert D. Martin
Here Am I Where Are You?: The Behavior of the Greylag Goose was thought to be Konrad Lorenz's last book. However, in 1991 the "Russian Manuscript" was discovered in an attic, and its subsequent publication in German has become a scientific sensation. Written under the most extreme conditions in Soviet prison camps, the "Russian Manuscript" was the first outline of a large-scale work on behavioral science. This translation contains a synopsis of all the ideas that made Lorenz famous as the founder of ethology, the study of comparative animal behavior.

Book Description
Using its powerful beak, a lorikeet gently preens its mate's feathers; young cheetahs rest together in the shade; fireflies semaphore to each other across a darkened landscape and a mongoose deftly bites its prey to death. The study of animal behavior is about all these things and more. It involves absolute stillness and violent activity, all the noises and smells and changes of color and shape that characterize animal life. Taking the organization of behavior within the individual animal as its core, this clear, concise and readable foray into the fascinating world of animal behavior investigates Tinbergen's questions of causation, evolution, development and function. It provides lucid accounts of all levels of behavior from the nerve cell to that of the population. The broad biological approach of this new, rewritten edition makes it an excellent choice for all students of animal behavior and psychology and their teachers.

Book Description
Animal Cognition presents a clear, concise, and comprehensive overview of what we know about cognitive processes in animals. Focusing mainly on what has been learned from experimental research, Vauclair presents a wide-ranging review of studies of many kinds of animals--bees and wasps, cats and dogs, dolphins and sea otters, pigeons and titmice, baboons, chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, and Japanese macaques. He also offers a novel discussion of the ways Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Piagetian concepts may be used to develop models for the study of animal cognition.
Individual chapters review the current state of our knowledge about specific kinds of cognition in animals: tool use and spatial and temporal representations; social cognition--how animals manage their relational life and the cognitive organization that sustains social behaviors; representation, communication, and language; and imitation, self-recognition, and the theory of mind--what animals know about themselves. The book closes with Vauclair's "agenda for comparative cognition." Here he examines the relationship of the experimental approach to other fields and methods of inquiry, such as cognitive ethology and the ecological approach to species comparisons. It is here, too, that Vauclair addresses the key issue of continuity, or its absence, between animal and human cognition.
Given our still limited knowledge of cognitive systems in animals, Vauclair argues, researchers should be less concerned with the "why" question--the evolutionary or ecological explanations for differences in cognition between the species--and more concerned with the "what"--the careful work that is needed to increase our understanding of similarities and differences in cognitive processes. This thoughtful and lively book will be of great value to students of animal behavior and to anyone who desires a better understanding of humankind's relations to other living creatures.

Customer Reviews:
SERIOUSLY outdated.......2007-05-06
I started scrapping over a year ago and this was one of the first books I purchased. Even then, it was VERY outdated. While there are some good ideas inside, this is a book for a scrapper that is not at all interested in using any of the new materials available. In 2004 (this book ends with the 2003 Creating Keepsakes Hall of Famers scrappers) patterned paper and TONS of embellishments especially designed for paper art emerged. It changed everything about scrapbooking.
This book is good if you only want to work with construction paper, vellum, colored wire, magic markers, and photos. If you are interested in using even the smallest amount of the new tools (even a hole punch!!), paper, materials, and embellishments out there (brads, circle cutters, patterned paper, tags, fibers, stamps, textured cardstock, die cuts), this book is NOT for you. This book was compiled and published before the "scrap how you want to" movement started up and is sort of firm in what is "right" and what is "wrong". There's little personality to any of the layouts- they all look the same.
I recently flipped through the book again, and it was astonishing to find scrappers like Ali Edwards, Cathy Z, etc inside, using things like construction paper and tissue on their pages. Their styles have completely changed, and it made me realize that several years ago, there were unspoken and rigid requirements about scrapbooking. Now it's a totally personal hobby and art form and these formerly "traditional" scrappers are paving the way for individuality and creativity, finding your own voice within the pages of your family/your personal scrapbooks. It sort of made me hopeful- if they can make so much progress in a few years, maybe I can, too!
Bottom line- if you are interested in the new materials available, which cost fairly little and are acid/lignin free, and are interested in learning some of the new techniques, this book is NOT for you. If you are interested in spicing up your photo journals with some things you already have in your stash (construction paper, vellum, old-fashioned cartoon stickers), this is a good source of inspiration.
Save your money- always look for scrapping books published in the last year or so. Scrapbooking changes SO much, and there has been such a huge explosion of styles and products, so any VISUAL publication compiled before 2005 is almost archaic (and not easily recreated!)
A good starting book instead? Any of Ali Edwards or Cathy Z's (better for simple, basic scrapping) books, or "The Amazing Page" by Making Memories. Or just get a subscription to any of the magazines- tons of layouts and ideas every month.
Love it!.......2007-01-02
This is one of my favorite books. It is also my inspiration when scrapbooking. Even though it portrays pages from actual handmade albums, I use it in my digital scrapbooking since I can virtually re-create anything I see on my computer. Highly recommended!
So Many Great Ideas.......2006-03-15
This book is amazing!! The ONLY problem I have found is that there are so many great ideas that I dont have enough time to do them all! I would suggest this book to anyone that just needs to look at really well done pages but not someone that is just beginning scrapbooking because the book does not come with how to instructions.
Helpful.......2006-02-14
If you are like most scrapbookers sometimes you need a little help to get inspired or you need something to "scrap-lift". I do not like everyone's layouts. Everyone has different tast and that is why the Hall Of Fame books are great because you get many layouts from many artists.
Overflowing with techniques and ideas - a great buy!.......2005-11-30
Want inspiration? Look no further - here it is! This book is filled to the brim with all sorts of techniques and ideas for every scrapbooker. I have purchased quite a few books in search for one that gave me inspiration. Generally they were full of these weird totally-not-me examples that while they looked good were impractical for everyday use. In this book, you get all sides of the creative spectrum. You get the far-out-there looks, to the homely looks, to in-between. You can turn page to page ohh'ing and ahh'ing over the pages but you'll find you wont - you'll bookmark the page and start scrapping immediately. I've had this book for a year and still haven't finished looking through it. It's definetly a keeper and one of my 2 favorite books!
