My Kitties Of Mass Destruction.......2007-06-28
Hmmmm... this book was a little too warm and fuzzy for me, and my cats still don't do what I want them to do. I like to call them my kitties of mass destruction.
I know the above statement doesn't really offer any constructive criticism so let me see if I can put into words what I didn't like about this book. Warren and Fay seem to be very caring and compassionate animal lovers but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of practical advice regarding getting cats to do what you want.
There were however, lots of cute stories about their animals sprinkled with a bit of advice - most of which I'd already heard. It was a nice read if you like animals (which I do) but not much help in the whole "getting them to do what you want" area.
Fluffy book about "Fluffy".......2007-03-11
I found this book uninformative and a waste of money. I'm sorry that I din't buy a used book. This book was too cute with too many cute stories. I was more interested in learning about cat behavioral problems and how to solve them. I lost patience with this book. A very silly book.
All fluff and no facts.......2007-02-09
If Warren Eckstein had chosen to market this book as a collection of entertaining pet anecdotes and essays, I would have no problem giving it five stars.
However, he's attempting to pass this book off as a step-by-step animal training guide, which it is not.
I found it unstructured and impractical in terms of how to physically train a cat to do anything; perhaps the advice was hidden among the inane Kittyspeak, in which Eckstein insisted on writing? It's good that he understands that cats are intelligent and need to have their attention engaged so they don't becoming bored furniture fungus. Unfortunately he doesn't get that many readers are the same way. Both cats and humans of a bookish bent will end up languishing in their chairs and reading Nietzsche when continually addressed like four-year old children -- i.e. bored out of their skulls.
This book offers little in the way of research or references to support his perspective on animal training. There is no bibliography, and in fact, he often claims that his beliefs are to the contrary of most trainers' experience or scientific findings.
For example, he believes that cats only purr when happy, despite the fact that studies have shown the purr's frequency helps to mend broken bones (which is why cats also purr when stressed). He disses behavioral theory in such an off-hand way that I wonder if he knows who BF Skinner is at all, and that numerous modern trainers utilize the methods of positive reinforcement (for both animal and human subjects) with excellent results.
Karen Pryor's book "Don't Shoot The Dog!" was a far more insightful, contructive and beneficial read in terms of training my cat (as well as dealing with animals and people in general). I would recommend it over this ball of fluff any day.
How To Get Your Cat To Do What You Want.......2007-01-12
This book has so much good information - even for a long time cat owner like me. Warren Eckstein has an impressive background in animal training and understanding in animal psychology! In this book he provides wonderful insights into the psychology of cats. This book has greatly helped me with an adopted older kitty. His recommendations have helped me establish a better relationship with a sensitive kitty who has had a difficult history. I highly recommend his book!
Helpful and funny.......2006-03-17
The book gave some really great pointers...but I wish it would have mentioned how do deal with different cat personalities. He generalized a bit...I still cant get my little brat to make eye contact with me but he does enjoy baths.
Book Description
In praise of author's previous book:
"I couldn't think of a single question that wasn't answered helpfully by this excellent book." -Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
"Here's a book your cat would have written for you. Anyone who has a cat, wants a cat or wants to know a cat should read this loving, lucid, comprehensive handbook. It's a gem." -Sy Montgomery
In 1985, silently as fog on little cat feet, cats padded past dogs as America's most popular domestic companion animal. While cat owners love their purring, fuzzy friends, cats can have another, rather unpleasant, side. Some cats spray; defecate and urinate on carpets, in corners, in shoes, on visitors' leather jackets; shred upholstery; chomp houseplants; ambush guests; caterwaul at all hours; and scratch and bite children, sometimes causing serious injuries and infections.
Skeptics will claim that it's impossible to train a cat. Happily, Wendy Christensen knows they're wrong. True, cats are intelligent, adaptable, patient, independent, stubborn, observant, and extremely quick learners. But they're also remarkably self-interested and quick to exploit a good deal. Outwitting a cat means persuading the cat that what you want is also what he wants.
Whatever your immediate, urgent specific cat problem-aggression, bullying, clinginess, refusal to eat-you'll find answers here. Wendy Christensen can tell you what works-and what doesn't. What to do right away-and what never to do. She'll share tips and cat-and-owner-tested secrets to reversing, redirecting, and solving-for good-even the thorniest behavior problems. And she'll tell you how to head off future problems, simply by understanding how your cat thinks.

Must have book for anyone who lives with kitties!.......2007-04-07
I have lived with kitties my entire adult life and love them dearly. I also have many "how to" kitty books. This is by far the best. Interesting, fun, and comprehensive. What more can we ask? Buy it! You need this book!
Finally found "the" book!.......2006-05-18
I have been looking for the cat complement to Dr. Fogel's wonderful "The Dog's Mind" ("The Cat's Mind" isn't it!). This book fits the bill. For someone who knows virtually nothing about cats and did not intend to have one, the introduction to the physical and mental nature of felines is indespensible. The behaviors covered are exactly what is needed as well. The author is obviously a "cat person" and gets a little biased, but the info is still solid. And it is so well-written that I had a hard time putting it down!
Whether or not you agree with the title ("Outwitting" is a series, BTW, and authors had to kinda retrofit their writing to fit the theme - Outwitting Dogs is another excellent entry in the series), this book holds nothing but useful information.
Enjoyable read!.......2006-02-24
This book was very informative and entertaing at the same time. I highly recommend!
Wonderful, and very helpful........2005-12-15
This is a wonderful and practical book about feline behavior and why your cat is the way it is. It lays it out straight to those of us who couldn't figure out why our cat would never listen when told "No!" and never come when she is called. They're cats, not dogs, not babies... they are independent-minded and headstrong and no amount of punishing, bribing or begging will get the cat to do exactly what you say.
The book is full of practical information about how to deal with "naughtiness", how to read your cat's body and vocal language, and how to be a better cat parent. It's also decidedly funny and even tongue-in-cheek at times ("Mewphy's Law #11: If you pester a cat long enough, you will get scratched. Mewphy's Law #12: You will deserve it.") It's packed with information about the history of cats and the physiology of cats, but the really pertinent information is the psychology and behavioral aspects of cats, something that most cat-care books don't give a lot of information on.
This book is really excellent, particularly if you're new to owning cats (as I am) and need a little bit of guidance in figuring out their personality.
Good book - not accurate title.......2005-10-20
This book is interesting and easy to read, and I definitely learned from it, despite the fact that I'm no beginner with cats.
It provides a good basics, from a history of the domestic cat, to an overview of a cats body structure, to tips on making your house more "cat friendly." I was just a bit dissapointed in the "outwitting" suggestions though.
Although there are a few ideas that I may try, many were either obvious (to outwit a cat who eats magazines, put the magazines in a drawer), gross (to outwit a cat who eats off your plate, just let them have a few bites and they'll lose interest) or impractical (to outwit a cat jumping on furniture that you don't want them to, set up motion-activated audio recordings of you yelling.)
I would still recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning about cat behavior and/or looking for ideas on improving their cat household. It's one of the best overall cat books I've read, but the title is just a little bit misleading.

This book is so much fun. It's clever and funny and anyone who has ever had a cat will enjoy reading it.
Cute & Hilarious!!!.......2006-12-09
What a great little book. My wife was laughing out loud! Perfect for any cat-lover --- and those who are perplexed by their cats. FUN!!!
Fat, furry and funny!.......2006-12-08
Well, the book isn't fat, the cats are. This slim little number is filled with whimsical cartoons of fat cats who have smartass answers (should that be smartCAT answers?) that are pretty darn funny. I'm not a "cat person" (dogs rule!), but I do like them a lot. I bought two copies for Christmas stocking stuffers for the cat ladies on my list, and I'm glad I got one for myself. Need a laugh? Well, this book has a bunch of them. Heck, it sure is more fun than a hairball any day!

Book Description
Pet lovers will perceive immediately that this book's unique feature is its radical approach to feline care. Author Claire Bessant writes exclusively from the cat's viewpoint, rather than from that of the animal's human owner. Broadening her reader's understanding with reliable facts on feline traits, she enriches her book with advice on keeping cats safe and contented both in the house and outside. As a noted feline expert, Ms. Bessant provides a full summary of health problems common among cats and offers information on treatments and remedies. She stresses the fact that in today's hi-tech and fast-paced urban environment, owners must remember that cats are still essentially the animals they were when they lived in Egypt. Though they have fit smoothly into today's human environment, they retain their good health only for as long as their owners remain aware of basic feline needs and wants. Every cat lover will want to read and re-read this discerning book.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-12-28
I feel this book is repetitive and shares opinion not fact. She refers to a study but doesn't really state specifics. I don't appreciate her references toward pedigree cats considering I have one and don't feel she is extreme or that her health is in danger. Besides, the fact of her opinion of having indoor cats. Everything is seems to be her opinion with nothing to back it up. The history part of the book is ok, but I can get that from just about any book. I highly disapprove of this book and don't recommend it at all.
Fantastic insights into cat behavior!.......2006-04-04
Even folks who think they already know all there is to know about cats will find new insights by reading Ms. Bessant's book. By learning about cats' innate, instinctual behaviors, we can much better understand, relate to, and enjoy our feline companions! I'm going to recommend this book to ALL of my cat-loving friends.
Poorly written, poorly edited.......2003-12-29
I have three cats whose behavior I'm constantly trying to understand. I got this book from my local library. I figured I would buy the book if I liked it.
In short, this book had some decent information. However, her writing style was so round about and redundant that it took away from any information she was trying to promote.
There are many better books on cat behavior than this one.
Book Description
This is the second book in our exciting new Kids' FAQs series, with real questions from real kids. Like our first title, Everything Dog, Everything Cat is not a typical reference book--it includes all kinds of questions gathered from kids all across the country and answers them in a matter-of-fact way. Why do my cat's eyes glow in photographs? Why did my cat bring me a bird she just killed? Why do cats like getting on top of the fridge? These are the kinds of questions kids have, and author and journalist Marty Crisp has carefully researched the answers and shares them here. Did you know that domestic cats all trace their roots back to Egypt? Did you know that a cat's hearing is more than twice as good as a dog's and five times better than a human's? Did you know that cats literally have a 'sixth' sense? Everything Cat is a unique and refreshing book full of facts and true anecdotes for young readers. Perfect for animal lovers or a fun research topic, Kids' FAQs books are for every kid who's always asking 'Why?'

Like listening to a Fascinating Conversation.......2000-09-06
Dr. Jim Humphries discusses various issues concerning cats in a conversational tone. The book's question & answer format is easy to follow and is much like popular Internet FAQ's. Each question is a real question that Dr. Humphries encountered. You get to read the original question, so that in addition to getting the information you also get a glimpse of a unique human-cat relationship behind every question.
The book covers practically every aspect of caring for your cat. Health, nutrition, behavior and grooming as well as everyday care problems, are all discussed thoroughly. What appealed to me in particular was that this vet does not forget basic feline issues, even when they are not directly related to our pampered babies at home. In fact, the first part of the book deals with questions about humane societies, abused cats and strays, declawing, euthanasia and the so important issue of spaying and neutering.
Another nice feature is that Dr. Humphries is not afraid to speak his own mind. All through the book, he frequently names specific brands of food and medicine and either approves or disapproves. His advice is straight and to the point. Rather than having a "disclaimer", he simply makes his claims.
This book makes a good reading, even if you're not looking for a specific answer to a problem. This is not a cat encyclopedia. The Q&A format makes it less orderly and creates a more fluent structure. Then again, when something does come up, it is very convenient to pull out of the shelf and leaf through
Book Description
Over 50 invaluable tips on creating a cat-friendly litterbox your cat will use. This booklet can prevent many litterbox problems, and keep your cat 'in the box'.
Customer Reviews:
Wish we had read this earlier.......2006-11-07
The advice in this book has been tested by us--via hard knocks. We adopted a year-old cat who'd been a rescue from the wild. We could not cure him from spraying but some of the ideas in this book (Feliway cat scent soother) and other ideas such as x + 1 litterboxes per cat were absolutely on point. Also on point were suggestions on why cats might soil a carpet (you changed something, the box is dirty, or they aren't getting enough attention) are proven true by us. We changed our work schedule and Mr. Kitty expressed his dislike of fewer hours of Cat Quality Time by leaving a brown valentine in the living room.
If you follow the advice here on where to put the box, what kind of litter to use (hint, perfumey litters annoy the cat) and other ideas, you will raise your cats to be clean and neat housemates. I consider this book a MUST for the first time cat owner and anyone getting a second or additional cat pet.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent primer for beginners, but does have mistakes.......2005-08-29
In the beginning, she cites all the features required for an inkle loom. I used this list to search for mine, and have been delighted with the loom I got. She also has great instructions for getting set up, and for weaving.
The only problem I've noticed is that if you follow exactly many of the charts, you will not get the results shown in the samples. Left of the center of the graph is perfect. The right hand side is always off by one. I had to learn this the hard way, and so now, I check that left and right of the center are identical, and then fix the chart before I begin warping my loom.
An EXCELLENT "how-to" book in clearly written instructions!.......1999-02-18
I am an artist who works in a very wide variety of artistic mediums. I am usually able to decipher "how-to" instructional books after going over the instructions several times, but I learn much more quickly by seeing the craft-in-question demonstrated in person.
This particular book on Inkle Weaving has been written with such skill, and crystal clear instructions and illustrations that I was able to design and complete a very complicated design pattern on my first effort! A friend, (Lady Merrsger of Clan CaerLonn) lent me her copy and loom so that I could see whether I wanted to continue with this type of weaving. Especially since it's my first experience with weaving. As my husband (Lord Aragon) says, "This is your new addiction, I see."
Matter of fact, since he's a wood-worker, I had him make me both the table-top & floor looms from the patterns included in the book. (Although, I wouldn't recommend this unless you are a wood-worker, yourself.) As Artisan/Merchants within the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), we used those looms to take orders from our customers last week. And everyone we talked to, demonstrated to, and sold looms to, were shown a copy of this book, and highly encouraged to buy one for themselves at Amazon.com!
Within the SCA, (which is a world-wide Midevial/ Renaissance re-creationist & educational group) we are often challenged to find some kind of trim to sew onto our "garb" which looks authentic within our "time period". The trim created on this type of very simple loom is perfect, and far surpasses the mass-produced stuff available in fabric stores! Ms. Bress also includes a good number of creative suggestions for use of the trim, from clothing to purses to wall hangings, etc.
I very highly recommend this book, most especially for Inkle Loom beginners! Besides presenting some very obviously artistic work, Helene Bress is among the few craftspeople I've seen who can also write very clear, and easily followed instructions. My friend who lent me her copy declares me an Inkle expert (Hah) as a result. Well done, and HUZZAH to Helene Bress!!!
Customer Reviews:
Good book but a bit dated.......2003-09-19
This book is a good book. She goes over basic inkle weaving and moves on to pick-ups. She includes charts for basic pick-up patterns. When used in combination with Lavinia Bradley's book or Helene Bress, it is a very good resource.
Cons: It doesn't use the modern inkle looms that are in use now. But she does show how to make the simple type of inkle loom she uses in the book. Also, her charting method is different than that used in Helene Bress's book (and other more modern ones). It just takes a bit of getting used to.
Overall, it's a good book if you're interested in pick-ups but I feel that it's best when used with another book.

Learn How To Weave With This One!.......2000-05-26
This book is undoubtedly the best book I've ever seen on weaving. It starts at the beginner's level with an explanation of weaving vocabulary and progresses to unravel all the mystery about the multitudes of loom types and the intended use and potentials of each. There is an abundance of drawings and photographs, not only on how to weave different patterns, but also photographs of finished projects to inspire you. An incredible book! Even the book itself has a beautiful protective book cover. A must for everyone interested in weaving from the beginner to the advanced. Highly recommend!

A great source for learning pick-ups.......2003-09-19
This is a great book for learning how to do pick-ups on the inkle loom. For each type of pick-up (horizontal, pebble weave, etc) she provides step-by-step advice. The Bress book assumed that you knew how to create a pattern. Lavinia doesn't do that. She steps you through each row from horizontal background pick-ups to pebble weave. Easy to read charts are included.
After a frustrating time, someone recommended this book to me and now I wonder why I thought it was so hard.
I highly recommend this book!
A good resource for intermediate inkle weavers.......2002-10-15
Beginners should rely on Helene Bress' book, with its more detailed instructions on how to begin. Bradley's
basic information is only adequate, but she expands on the basics and has some interesting and useful innovations. She includes some tricks for warping and finishing ends which make the completed band look neater. Bradley also shows how to use pick-up techniques to make every letter of the alphabet, so that you can include words in your work. Illustrations consist of diagrams and black and white photos.
