Book Description

The Forelands are at war. The magic-wielding Qirsi and their Eandi masters have mobilized their forces. The Eandi have had to look beyond past differences to make alliances for the sake of the future, praying it isn’t too late for them to change the outcome of the war. Tavis, an Eandi prince who was framed for murdering the princess to whom he was pledged, and endured torture before winning his freedom, has at last avenged her death. Still, the murder and its aftermath have brought war to the Forelands just as the Qirsi conspirators who bought his love's blood had intended. Now Tavis and Grinsa, a Qirsi shaper with more powers than he reveals, who saved Tavis when nobody else would believe his innocence, venture across the Forelands, risking death to help save the land they love . . .

A powerful Qirsi weaver has brought this terrible war to the land, bending the minds of those he controls and of his enemies in an effort to forge alliances and mobilize forces to destroy the Eandi. His powerful magical ability estranges lovers, betrays leaders, and wreaks murder and death throughout the land. But even with his powerfully malign intelligence, he underestimates the mettle of his opponents. In a psychological duel with Grinsa, the Weaver’s formidable powers are sorely tested. Grinsa withstands the Weaver’s most powerful attacks at nearly the expense of his own life, and in the process discovers the Weaver’s identity.
Will Grinsa’s challenge to the Weaver spell the end of the Weaver’s reign of doom? Or has Grinsa’s discovery come too late to help the Eandi cause? The answers lie in the growing war that may sunder the Forelands forever.

4 out of 5 stars This means WAR!.......2007-05-10

Shapers of Darkness is the fourth volume in David Coe's engaging Winds of the Forelands series.

Where the previous installment (Bonds of Vengeance: Book 3 of The Winds of the Forelands) focused almost entirely on the political intrigue, Shapers of Darkness is non-stop action from cover to cover. At this point, the Qirsi Weaver's behind-the-scenes machinations have all come to fruition and the entire realm is at war, and there are as many internal threats as there are external. As the penultimate volume in the series, Shapers of Darkness does a great job of pulling plotlines together and building anticipation for the series conclusion Weavers of War.

The series suffers a bit from the sheer volume of characters, nations, plots, and subplots, and to his credit the author seems to realize this. Coe provides a helpful "who's who" list of characters at the beginning of the book, which is a nice way to get reacquainted with the cast before jumping into chapter 1. There's still a sense of repetition or perhaps homogenization, in that the various nations seem interchangeable. This is especially noticeable in comparison to George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. Martin gives each people their own culture, mannerisms, customs, and speech patterns. Coe does this to a far lesser extent, almost as if it were an afterthought. Still, this is a relatively minor complaint against an otherwise very enjoyable series.

Shapers of Darkness is so action packed it's almost exhausting, and it will definitely leave you panting for more. Fortunately the end is near. Weavers of War will be the series' final volume.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series!.......2007-03-16

I loved this book as I did all the others in the series. I can't wait to read Weavers of War.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series so far.......2006-12-26

If you are already to this book, you know this is a great series. I have read everything that David Coe has written and I'm not disappointed with this volume. I can't wait for the conclusion to find out which weaver wins!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-08-01

David B. Coe is just such an amazing writer, and all of his books are just so enjoyable to read, that I couldn't put it down. Not only are his characters well developed, but his book has a great plot, which further adds to the suspense of this novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy novel, and if you haven't read any of his other books in this series, I would recommend that you start with the first, Rules of Ascension. This series is amazing, and I cannot wait for the 5th book to come out!

5 out of 5 stars They just get better and better!.......2006-03-11

More good stuff from Coe. With the close of each book in this series I anxiously await the arrival of the next. This time fortunately I didn't have to wait too long---2 books in 1 year, simply awesome. I can hardly wait for the conclusion of this awesome series!

As a Christian Education Director, and seminary student in the Episcopal tradition, I can assure you that Case's "The Book of Uncommon Prayer 2" is an amazing liturgical achievement. I recommend it to anyone, regardless of denomination, who is looking to hold meaningful, thought provoking, and spiritually nourishing worship services. Please, don't let the name fool you, this book has application outside the Youth Ministry field, and is helpful in incorporating both ancient and modern methods of worship. The "Good Friday" service is especially profound.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-02-26

I bought this book because it included the 3 shapers and I loved Paula Desimone's other book (co-authored with Pat Stewart) - Brush, Sponge, Stamp. This current publication does not compare with her earlier book.

What really irritated me was the fact that so many of the project instructions specified color shaper types and sizes that were NOT included with the book. In fact, a minimal amount of the designs actually use any of the three accompanying shapers. Surely she could have come up with ideas utilising the color shapers that were going to be sold with her book.

My suggestion is to buy 'Brush, Sponge, Stamp'; choose your favourite designs from this book and then go out and purchase the shapers you will need.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow instructions, dazzling results.......2000-03-20

This book unlocks a great array of dazzling painting effects made easy by using color shapers, "brushes" with various size and shape rubber tips instead of bristles. The 3 color shapers that come with the book are of top quality.

I really enjoy the feel of the color shapers and the ease with which I learned to control them. They can be used to apply paint or manipulate or remove paint from a surface, creating endless possibilities.

The book starts with basic strokes then on to a wide variety of projects using different techniques & readily available materials, including metal, wood, ceramics & paper. There are some great effects by combining colors and glazes in layers.

The projects have clear instructions with color photos every step of the way. They are a springboard for more ideas. The color shapers are now among my favorite tools and I keep finding new ways to use them.

    Book Description

Margot is the daughter of a king, but she is beloved by neither his court nor his kingdom. She has "water in her blood," a trait associated with magic and looked upon with distaste and suspicion. When she meets Orrin, a foreign king who is respectful, not scornful, of her affinity for water, she flees with him to his castle by the sea, though she soon realizes he is not as benevolent as she first thought. Intertwined with Margot's story is that of Bird, a storyteller who must tell stories for Orrin, though he can barely stand him. When Orrin steals the Book of the Sea, a magical gift given to Margot by her mother, Margot knows she must run away once again, and the threads of the two stories begin to intertwine. A convincing and beautifully realized world, a strong-minded female protagonist, and elements of Celtic folklore mark this rich, multilayered fantasy. Author's note.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Tres Interessante.......2006-06-23

I'm always on the look out for new fastasy books (with a hint of romance). This book, based on Celtic myths, hit the spot (although there was only a pinch of romance). The concept is interesting, but I found the beginning to be slow-paced. I didn't really get hooked until the third or fourth chapter.

The story is about a princess whose blood is considered "base" because her mother was of the West Land, a "water shaper". Her father married her mother on a whim, and the result is that their daughter Margot is scorned and unwelcome in her own homeland. Her mother passes away before Margot ever gets the chance to visit the West Land. Regardless, she is still drawn to it. Margot escapes to the West Land (and the ocean that surrounds it) with the help of holy man/king Olin. From there, Margot discovers that her knowledge of the ocean is instinctual and legendary. She goes on to learn about her mother and her mother's decendants, the strict rules laid down by Olin, and the animosity that storyteller Bird has for Olin.

The novel unravels nicely, mysteries are cleared, questions answered, and an opening left for a sequel (which i hope will come to exist sometime soon ^_^)!

    Happy Reading!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, deeper and more complex than you expect.......2006-06-23

I was expecting to enjoy this book, but not at the level I did. It was an engrossing read with a real depth of feeling when you read, and a sinking into the story appeal that I look for but don't find as often as I like. Great mastery in the telling, and characters that are real and not 1 dimensional, thank goodness. A real treat, I'd pick it up, you'll be suprised by how much you like it, and how hard it is to put down once picked up. .....

    5 out of 5 stars lovely book.......2006-05-16

McCaffrey combines folklore with treachery in this fantasy that incorporates elements of selkie tales. In an unnamed land that seems a lot like Scotland, Margot must learn how to use her gifts while being used by a man with whom she's fallen in love. Combining a journey, coming-of-age, and myth and magic, McCaffrey has created a compelling read set in a fascinating world.

      Book Description

"Judaism, or that which has united the successive generations of Jews into one people, is not only a religion; it is a dynamic religious civilization."--Mordecai Menachem Kaplan, from Questions Jews Ask (1956) In assessing what their Jewish identities mean to them, Jews today sometimes describe themselves as links in a chain of tradition that stretches back to biblical times. In this collection of biographies of Jewish thinkers from ancient times to the present, the links in that chain come to life through the dramatic stories of 41 shapers of Jewish tradition. From Hillel, whose teaching more than twenty centuries ago set Judaism on its post-biblical course, to Yitzhak Rabin, the Noble Peace Prize-winning Prime Minister of Israel who helped to broker a peace settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians, these men and women all left an indelible mark on Jewish practice, scholarship, or nationalism. In individual biographical essays, Naomi Pasachoff explores the contributions of philosophers, poets, and philanthropists; of mystics, statesmen, and scholars; of religious organizers and Zionist leaders. In so doing she uncovers surprising facts about well-known figures. For example, Theodor Herzl is widely honored as the father of the modern state of Israel, but did you know that he once dreamed of leading all the Jews of Vienna to St. Stephan Cathedral to undergo mass baptism? Readers who recognize Rashi as the most famous of all biblical commentators may be startled to learn that his concise style was a function of his tight budget. The book includes suggestions for further reading, an appendix, a glossary, and an index. Illustrations and photographs accompany the text, and a biographical fact box for each profile provides for easy reference. All these features make Links in the Chain an ideal introduction to Jewish role models for younger readers and a vital reference for all interested in Jewish history. Moreover, the book is a reminder that Jewish tradition is still evolving and that each reader has the potential to contribute to it. 41 extended essays profile the lives and contributions of Jewish heroes, including: Johanan ben Zakkai, the spiritual and intellectual leader who reshaped Jewish life after the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E. Dona Gracia Nasi, the outstanding 16th-century leader who led the equivalent of an underground railroad to lead fugitive Marranos to safety. Rebecca Gratz, said to have been the model for the character Rebecca in Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, who spearheaded the development of Jewish Sunday schools in the United States. Leopold Zunz, whose transformation of Jewish scholarship in the 19th century ultimately led to the existence of Judaica departments and programs in major universities. Lily Montagu, whose unsatisfying Orthodox childhood as a child of privilege in Victorian England transformed her into a 20th-century leader of British and world liberal Judaism. Isaac Mayer Wise, the early leader of Reform Judaism in the United States, who conceived of and helped bring into existence many of the institutions of contemporary American Judaism. Eliezer Ben Yehudah, the father of modern Hebrew, who nearly singlehandedly transformed Hebrew from an ancient religious language into a spoken modern one.

"Garden of the Shaped" is the first book of a three-part trilogy involving a group of scientist (geneticists) called the "Venn" who are exiled from Earth. The Venn eventually make their home on another planet and start three races. The first race, the Ganu are ordinary human stock. The second race is called the Lianis who are shape shifters. The last race is warlike and have the ability to tell when someone is truthful or not. The Venn set themselves up as Gods. They have taken a syrum and are immortal, but now hundreds of years later there are only four left. Many have died or killed themselves and the remaining four have forgotten who and what they really are. Meanwhile the races they created are finding out the truth. I highly recommend this book, and the other two are also excellent, although the first book, "Garden of the Shaped" is my favorite. I wish the entire series could be reprinted because other readers should get to enjoy it as much as I did. Sheila Finch is truly an artist at telling a story that keeps the reader interested. If you have a way of getting used books, I would suggest you find these since they are definitely good reading! The second book is "Shapers Legacy" and the third and final book is "Shaping the Dawn".
