Excellent hide and seek book.......2006-05-09
This is an excellent find the XYZ (insert item there) book. Gigi the Giraffe and Zachary the Zebra lead us through several countries. Each page has suggested items to find, but there are many many more on each page you would make up on your own to find and look at, or use to play grouping games. The items listed are much more advanced than a lot of the books of this genre, enabling you to expose your child to a much broader vocabulary, while still presenting it in an engaging and age-appropriate manner for the toddler/preschool crowd. This book would still be interesting for younger children as well (6 or 7 probably) in terms of the pictures and broader vocabulary presented. This book has held my son's attention from about age 3 or slightly younger now to age 4 and still is going strong. He finds new things to see and new games to play with us looking at it, and even our infant enjoys just looking at the colorful pictures.
Awesome Round The World Travel Book!!.......2003-09-11
I found this book quite by chance, and am so very happy that I did!! It's a really fun 'seek and find' type book. It follows Zachary the zebra and Gigi the giraffe as they make their way from their native Africa all the way around the world on a world-wind excursion!! Almost every differant type of culture and geography is visited. Every double page spread shows a very interesting and culturally correct depiction of a different country or region with a list of items on the bottom that you search to find in the picture. For those of us who don't know what some of those things maybe (a pennant in Brazil for instance), there is a list of answers in the back! The pictures are very exciting and well done and the cultures are very carefully researched. It's lots of fun to explore with our son, and offers a great opportunity to discuss various cultural differences with him!!! The book is quite large, and very well made - has stood up this far! Two thumbs up!

i simply recommend this collection of stories/talks. an effortless read....though more like you climb and climb with the rhythm of friedlander's words...next thing you know, you're on the top of the mountain. or the depths of the cave...or wherever it is you need to be.
breathtaking wisdom.
i totally recommend this along with other neo-classics of world-wide sufism: The Last Barrier, Living Presence, Among the Dervishes (and most anything from Octagon Press), The Essential Rumi.

a box of jewels .......2006-01-18
This has been one of the most enjoyable books I have read over the past few years. I spent an evening reading the ancient tales to my parents, and for the first time in a very long time the evening became dawn without notice of time. I thank you Shems for this. The author's sincerity for the welfare of his audience is pouring out in every page. If you feel as though you are seeking a path to God, or just want to see life from a different angle, this book is for you.
INTRIGUING AND USEFEL.......2004-05-08
Very few books come by in one's life that impacts life itself. This is one of them. This truly stands amongst other fascinating books in history.
Shems Friedlander takes you on a journey from the most basic logical way of living to the most insightful understanding of the ***meaning of life*** itself. I couldn't believe my own eyes (and mind) as to how clearly and simply I was comprehending the most complex subjects of humanity, all told with many absorbing tales, delivered with a mastery of astonishing ease.
Either the author is justly a genius, waiting to be discovered by the world, or he is truly moved by God to produce such a masterpiece, or perhaps both.
In any case, if you were given a choice to read one book this year, make it "When You Hear Hoofbeats Think of a Zebra" by Shems Fridlander.
Being an author myself, I will put my entire reputation on line for this book.

This is a well written book that really does make you think....it is very inspiring. If your the type of reader who enjoyes mystic, real life, sufi tales....you'll like this book. It takes you to a different level...you begin to breath the words like they are your own...they taste so good. A definite "cant put it down" read. Read it and you wont regret

its a very good book about sufiism one thing i like in it the most that it says that you can not do bad deeds with your hands because the name of allah i.e his 99 names have been printed on your hands look on your hands for few minutes and you will see that there is 81 written in urdu on your left hand and 18 written on your right i want to red this book all again but i can not find it any where i want to purchase it but dont have any credit card facility what should i do if any one can do me this favour please i will be obliged thank you bye

My 3 yr. old son LOVES this book. I plan on getting the rest of the Zigby adventure books. Great easy story...not too long, but long enough. Great, bright vivid pictures that kids LOVE.

Be careful when reading this book.......1999-03-01
This book has a lot of interesting and fun-filled facts and trivia. However, for those interested and knowledgeable in natural history there is some incorrect or misleading information. Upon reading the bibliography, I understood why there may be some information that is misleading and misunderstood. There are excerpts from Woman's Day, Time and the Philadelhia Inquirer. It seems obvious that the author is a hobbyist rather than a scientist.

I am a professional director in the American theatre, and for the last 20 years of her life, it was my joy to direct and collaborate with Maxene Andrews on many shows, radio interviews, personal appearances, and stage appearances! She was a great lady with a heart of gold, and such pride in America!
She always spoke highly of her sisters and family, and was never boastful about the major contribution "The Andrews Sisters" made to America, and especially the WW II effort to bolster the spirits of our fighting men and women.
Maxene is sorely missed by her friends and fans, but the book she wrote with Bill, "Over Here-Over There," is a treat to read and love! She was excited when "telling the memories!" The book especially reflects wit and faith in times of great trouble for our country. The music and the stories behind the shows for the USO are inspiring!
I am happy to have known Maxene and to have been a part of her life as her director and friend! No single singing group in our history has equally the perfection and spirt of these three Greek daughters of an immigrant to America!
Maxene Andrews is a spirit that continues to brighten our torch of freedom through the music that she and her sisters sang. The stories told in this book reflect the scenes behind the scenes of keeping America smiling!

Great book about the Andrews Sisters, their work during the WWII years with the USO, and many of the other stars that participated in these shows to entertain the troops.

This book provides fabulous insight on WWII and the spirit of America that helped win the war for the Allies. So many times, my parents said, "Why, back in my day we didn't get meat at every dinner. But we didn't complain: we LIKED it!" If you want to know more about America's patriotic spirit and how it "gets the job done", you'll love this book. The Andrews Sisters were a class act and Maxine and the other USO "soldiers in greasepaint" did their best to encourage and cheer our fighting forces on home soil and abroad. This book has a lot of history and tells about emotions of the folks during that time in a very poignant way. If you ever wondered why certain songs with wacky titles were popular ("Six Jerks In A Jeep"), you'll come away with greater understanding.
