Book Description
Without words, Emily Arnold McCully tells the rambunctious tale of four kittens whose mama has gone off hunting for food. When she accidentally gets shut up in the feed barn, the kittens are free to go exploring. But their mischief-making leads to a run-in with a hungry hawk! Luckily, help comes their way from the most unexpected of places. And four weary kittens are finally reunited with their ever-so-grateful mama.
Winner of the Caldecott Medal for Mirette on the High Wire, Emily Arnold McCully has perfectly captured the playful antics of kittens everywhere. And her unspoken message of parental love and protection brings added richness to a book that children will pore over again and again.

Amazon.com
A respected photographer whose previous books include the bestsellers Asleep in the Sun and The Mediterranean Cat, Hans Silvester has captured the imaginations of readers worldwide with his unique and endearing photographs of the cats of the Greek Islands. He returns to this sun-drenched setting once again with Kittens in the Sun, focusing on the youngsters of the furry set:
Even as they begin to explore the world around them, the kittens grow rapidly into little cats. Clumsy at first, they begin to investigate their surroundings. Curious and playful, bursting with energy, they encourage one another to venture further and further away from home.
The breathtaking beauty of the islands serves as the ideal backdrop for these frolicking felines, whose daily to-dos--including pouncing, playing, and, of course, lounging--are expertly documented by Silvester's trained eye. And while they'll soon grow to be independent cats, this brief moment in their tender and all-too-cute lives will forever live in Kittens in the Sun.
Book Description
Over 150,000 people the world over have fallen in love with his work. Now best-selling feline shutterbug Hans Silvester is back with Kittens in the Sun. The subjects here are as playful, adventurous, and cute as they come, captured against the stunning backdrop of the sun-drenched Greek Isles. These kittens exhibit a precocious pugnacity that is not to be rivaled. As they spat, bat, and loll in the sun, Silvester is there to catch every irresistible moment. This deluxe pocket volume is perfect for cat lovers, Grecophiles, and anyone who simply wants to be transported to a place where azure blue, sun-baked white, calico, and tabby are the colors of choice.
Customer Reviews:
Moderately pleased in Colorado Springs.......2007-09-10
The book arrived in very good condition despite being poorly packaged, and having been folded in half by the postman to fit in my mailbox. It barely made it to me by the end of the month. I'll beware of this dealer in the future.
Animal lovers should know about the plight of these animals.......2001-04-21
All of Hans Silvester's photography books of cats, dogs & kittens in the Greek Cyclades Islands are lovely examples of fine photography. As a fine art photographer myself, I respect Mr. Silvester's level of skill and artistry, and I find his other books very beautiful.
However, when I first became aware of his book about the cats and dogs, I was thoroughly dismayed by his choice of subject matter and the way he has chosen to portray the lives of these creatures as idyllic and carefree.
Having been to these Greek islands, I have learned firsthand that the large majority of these poor animals are ignored, injured, or mistreated by people there-anything but "respected." The photographer has omitted portraits of the true conditions for most of the stray dogs and cats in Greece-crippled, starving, dying of thirst, hurt or maimed, with the humans around them barely taking notice.
The full horror of the story was revealed to me by locals on the islands. Each year, the cats & dogs are allowed to breed uncontrolled, because tourists are fond of seeing the cute animals around town and on the beaches. At the end of each tourist season, as many of them as possible are rounded up and killed (I couldn't bear to learn how), until the following year when the ones that survived begin the cycle all over again. I found this same story on all the islands I visited, including Mykonos, and I was so appalled that I shortened my stay and left Greece altogether.
The situation is a tragedy, and my feeling, as a photographer and animal lover, is that Mr. Silvester should not be misrepresenting the conditions of the cats and dogs on these Greek islands, especially when it is for monetary gain. I hope animal lovers around the world will agree, and send a message to anyone who profits in any way from the suffering of these dogs and cats in the sun.
If you love cats, these books are for you.......2000-03-12
I recommend all of Hans Silvester's books of cat photography. You get lots of photos and relatively little text, so they are perfect for those of us who just want to look at interesting, artistic photos of cats. Plus you get a glimpse of life in the Greek islands, so you can pretend you are enriching your mind while you ooh and aah at the images of furry felines. And if you read the text, you actually will learn about the cats and the people who share the islands with them.
GREAT.......1999-12-04
Picked it up in the bookstore & couldn't put it down! What great pictures, I rushed home & ordered it from Amazon! : )
A Love for Cats.......1999-11-30
If you love cats, you will love this book. This photo essay is a beautiful collection of kittens. Not only is it cute, but the photography is truly a work of art.

The storytelling magic of James Herriot has become a warm, joyful part of our children's lives. In Moses the Kitten, Herriot tells the tale of a tiny, bedraggled kitty found tucked beside a frozen pond, who is nursed back to health on a nearby farm.
Customer Reviews:
The Wonderous Moses the Kitten.......2005-09-16
In the beginning a man found a very ill kitten, so he went to a farm close by. The people there said, "We can help." They gave him some warm milk and meat scraps. Moses, the kitten, one day was hungry and nobody was around. So he went searching for food. Then he found a sow (or pig) and saw all her piglets. They were all eating so he decided to call the sow his mother, and he drank from her and got milk. As he grew up he had a very good life and he always remembered and kept company with his adopted mother, the sow.

Touching.......2005-04-05
This is a very touching story. There is a lot of valuable information about farm life that I think is fascinating. Some of the language is tough for a child. However, it is great for a child to learn his/her grammer.
The best, best, best, best, best, best book in the Universe.......2005-01-31
I loved this book. I love all of James Herriot's books. He is my favorite author. To bad he is dead. He died in 1994. This book is about a little kitten who is found by a vet. Moses is put in the stove to warm him up. The farmer's wife puts him with the piglets. And he starts to eat with them. And he lives with them forever. Buy it. You'll love it.
A children's book that everyone in the family will read.......2002-07-18
The text of this book is pure James Herriot, with absolutely no attempt to speak down to a young audience. Therefore, the use of the regional dialect may be a bit of a challenge to some young readers, but the exquisite illustrations should spur nine year olds & older to read it for themselves. It should be stressed that this is a true story as all of Herriot's writing is based on his experiences as a country veterinarian.
Do resist the temptation to skim through the book for the illustrations before reading it though. The illustrations are definitely a part of the story and one of the double page illustrations will definitely get a better reaction if not seen until one reads the preceding text.
If this "children's book" is left out on the coffee table, I predict that everyone in the family will at one time or another read it and enjoy it. I'm sure that any teenagers will wait until nobody sees them reading it, and that they won't admit enjoying it, but chances are they will.
Also, this book may well inspire those 12 and older to read James Herriot's adult books.
Great story, Difficult language.......2000-04-04
This is a beautiful, moving story for children, which will touch even the parent reading the book! My only complaint about that it uses archaic (or regional?) language that in many cases even I (the parent!) didn't understand. It didn't really keep us from enjoying the story; it was just frustrating for me to be flustered by words in a children's book! I would recommend it nonetheless; just be sure to read it to your kids rather than handing it to them to read themselves, as it may frustrate a young reader.

Book Description
Since it was first published over fifty years ago, April's Kittens remains a classic cat story and is now made available again in this handsome new edition.
Many children understand April's dilemma when her cat, Sheba, has three kittens. April is thrilled until her father insists that theirs is strickly a one-cat household. April must give up three cats, but which ones? The aptly named Charcoal? Tiger-striped Butch? Sweet-faced Brenda?--or even Sheba?
How April eventually comes up with the perfect solutions makes for a heartwarming story that has appealed to many young cat lovers and will continue to delight generations of children everywhere. Clare's Newberry's enchanting illustrations reflect her fondness for cats; School Library Journal deemed these "beautiful drawings, so real one wants to pet them."
Customer Reviews:
What happened to the other two kittens?.......2004-10-02
Young April lives in a "one cat" apartment with her mother, father, and cat, Sheba. The apartmeent they live in is so small that April has to sleep in a crib for a baby(that would be neglect now...)! When Sheba has kittens,April, as any girl, wants to keep all three of the kittlers along with Sheba. her father want let her keep all of them, not even two of them. But she has to think of something. Does she give up the kittens and keep the beloved Sheba? Or does she keep the kitten she affectionatly names Brenda?
Well she kind of does both; she gives away the other two kittens away and keeps Sheba and Brenda. The family decides get a larger apartment( a two-cat apartment). When I read on the back that April finds a perfect solution I thought she would find a cever way to keep all four cats. Is it just me or is this a not-so-perfect solution. But at least the art is perfect.
Clare Newberry's drawings are very beautiful and seem to match the book's text perfectly.
These are marvelous books.......2002-02-07
... If you and your child love cats and gorgeous illustrations, you should hunt these books down. We have many of them. "Herbert the Lion" got us started and that's a delight too. THese books should not be allowed to go out of print
Aprils Kittens.......2001-04-21
This is very first book that I checked out of the school library. The fact that I could remember it so vividly testifies to the fact that I really loved it. I recently purchased for my own daughter. It is a wonderful story.
My mother would have loved these heart-warming reviews.......2001-03-11
Not many people know that all the Clare T. Newberry stories were "99%" true. My mother felt that just having and loving cats led to wonderful stories that were much more poignant for being real.
Reading the wonderful and deeply felt reviews on this site would have delighted my mom, and they certainly have touched me.
It is very sad that all the other books listed on this site are really in print, but Smithmark Publishers who issued them declared Chapter 11, so to get them you have to do a book search which Amazon also provides. But they are available!
Wonderful Reviews from The New York critiques.......2001-03-11
The New Yorker review: "Mrs. Newberry is the paragon of cat portraitists. Here she has written the story of a little girl and her kittens to warm the heart of any child."
The New York Herald Tribune: "Even better than MITTENS, this picture-book is a prize...This family lives in a one-cat apartment; every city dweller knows what that means...what a heartbreaking thing for a little girl to let even one of them go?
The pictures are portraits of the sempiternal kitten, new with every batch yet old as Egypt."
The New York Times: "Mrs. Newberry, if possible, is even better and more beguiling...in April's Kittens."

Customer Reviews:
Watch Me Grow Kitten.......2007-05-15
Kitten, is one of a series of DK books that cover the life cycle of different animals. Most of these sort of baby animal books seem to cover only that baby animals are cute and that they eventually grow up. This book is the first one I've read that hints at the biology behind making babies and even includes photographs of a pregnant cat and the same cat later nursing her litter of kittens.
Beautiful ly Illustrated Book.......2006-04-18
I love cats and kittens, and while this book is written for a young child, the photographs, expressions and little comments of the animals are just wonderful. All books published by DK have wonderful visual quality. A must have if you are a cat/kitten lover with whimsy in your heart (and you don't even have to have children to enjoy it).

Customer Reviews:
Homey and inviting.......2007-09-20
This book has many ideas to make your home "homey". The designs are great for beginners as well as experienced quilters, can't wait to start my first from this book. You won't be dissapointed.
Northwoods style designs.......2006-03-26
Like the granola girl designs for quilts to use in the cottage.
Smallish quilts and lots of applique. Is that what you wanted?.......2006-02-27
Abraham Lincoln once said (I paraphrase), "For the kind of person who would like this sort of thing, this is just the sort of thing they would like." That's the best description I can give of Quilting the Lodge Look. If you're seeking a collection of woodsy, bungalow-ish quilts primarily for home decoration, this may be the book for you. If you were hoping for larger quilts suitable for beds (as I was), you may be a little disappointed.
The quilts are ALL pretty. The colors and fabrics chosen really do elicit the feeling of a cabin in the woods: flannel plaids, sure, but plenty of woodsy dark reds, browns, deep blues. Not that you're stuck with Debbie Field's color choices (I've never made a quilt that matched the picture), but she gives good guidance, here.
Most involve applique, usually with the predictable "lodge" theme (such as one with a canoeing picture); I find they make me think of camping, cooking over a woodfire, dappled sunlight. If you're not into applique, though, you'll probably find yourself saying, "pretty quilt," as you flip the page to the next option.
Several of the quilts (well, "several" given that we're talking about only 24 quilts) are sampler quilts, with 4 or 9 different blocks. The smaller projects include a set of placemats, pillow, etc., which are designed to match others, such as a canoe pillow that would go nicely with the sampler wall-hanging that includes a canoeing block.
This book's weakness -- or strength, depending on what you're looking for -- is its emphasis on small, hang-able quilts. I think there are only four larger sizes, and they're all "snugglers." None are big enough to put on a queen bed, and I'm not sure they'd cover a double. Great for wrapping around you in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night, but we don't have too many of those in Phoenix.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to making one of these quilts. I may; I have a sister in New York (where it *snows*, can you imagine that?) who would probably love one of those snugglers. And they sure are pretty.
Great book for the outdoor lover.......2005-11-15
Instructions very good. If you like the outdoor look you'll like all the projects in this book
Quilting the Lodge Look .......2005-03-12
I love the mountains. This book is wonderful. At first glance I only saw the main blocks. Upon closer look at each block there is so much detail in the little things that really make the block meaningful. There are great directions for each block and full sized patterns for applique that make these blocks amazing. If you can not find retreat in a mountain lodge, you can make the lodge look in your own home with this book.
