Best read in ages!.......2003-11-27
Anyone who has read Raymond Coppinger's previous work (notably, "Dogs", with Lorna Coppinger) will recognize the easy to read writing style here. What is astonishing about this book, however, is the sly, tongue-in-cheek humor which is enjoyed by layman and dog enthusiast alike. No particular knowledge of dog breeding or showing is necessary, but those who do have such a background will pick up on even more subtle humour. The writing is fantastic, the pictures are perfect - this would be a wonderful addition to anyone's library - I haven't found anyone (from many backgrounds) who has failed to enjoy this book thoroughly.

Dogs That Point, Fish That Bite: Outdoor Essays (Chapel Hill Book)
ASIN: 0807825808
Release Date: 2000-08-30 |
Book Description
The Secret Lives of Fishermen is Jim Dean's second book of essays celebrating wild places, rural traditions, and the pleasures and often humorous frustrations of fishing, hunting, hiking, and campingor, as Dean might put it, "messing around" outdoors. It combines essays originally published in his monthly "Our Natural Heritage" column in Wildlife in North Carolina with longer pieces that appeared in other magazines. These forty-six engaging essays are arranged in a loose chronicle of the sporting year, but they seldom follow predictable routes. From a whimsical story about discovering live wood ducks in a cabin stove to a poignant memoir of summers spent in a remote riverside shack, all of the pieces are bound by a conviction that our resources and time are limited and our finest memories are shared.
The title notwithstanding, not all of the essays in The Secret Lives of Fishermen are about fishing, nor are readers likely to discover any shocking secretsunless they are surprised to learn that fishermen and hunters have myriad interests and seldom measure success by the number of fish caught or game bagged.

Customer Reviews:
Disgusting.......2006-09-23
This entire book is disgusting. The facts are skewed in every case to favor the CRIMINAL. Folks, when someone has a gun and has hurt someone else or is threating to hurt a cop, HE IS A CRIMINAL. Favorable reviews of this book are disturbing. Remember who you call when you need help. Remember who you call when a drunk kills your wife on the highway. Remember who you call when your sister gets raped. Remember who you call when you are in 7-11 and a meth-head robs the place and kills your daughter. You call police. You call them because WE do something you can't. Serve and protect. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
Part of the Problem, Not the Solution.......2006-04-08
What a deceitful book.
I'm a cop featured in this book.
If my story is here, this book is not based in fact.
My story says... http://stolenlives.org/read/index.php?action=show§ion=area_washington_state.xml&display=WASHINGTON+STATE&area=51
November 25, 1998. Lakewood:
Mr. Lambertsen was shot by Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Joe McDonald. He died at the hospital. Authorities claim Mr. Lambertsen's wife called 911 to report that her husband was threatening to shoot himself and police with his shotgun. Police arrived and shot him, claiming he refused to drop the shotgun and aimed it at the officers. The prosecutor ruled the shooting justifiable. Mr. Lambertsen is survived by his wife, Sue Marie Lambertsen
The call came out as a suspect armed with a shotgun was threatening his pregnant wife with a shotgun. His small child was also present. His wife is the one who called.
As the police were enroute he advised his neighbors he was going to "shoot it out" with the police and to stay in their homes.
The short of it is, is that he advanced on me and another officer after we arrived. We were 50 yards from his mobile home when he exited with his shotgun pointed at us.
My partner yelled at him to drop his weapon.
We retreated to cover. When he continued advancing on our enclosed position with his shotgun still pointed toward us I fired once stopping him.
Brutality on my part....I think not.
I know of the other incidents in this book involving my department and they are similarly unfairly included in this book.
There are as the saying goes "bad apples" but please do some research.
Anyone who has given blanket kudos to this book is one of the bad apples who now has no credibility at all.
This book is part of the problem not part of the solution.
Don't waste your money.
I only wish I had known this book was published when it was.
Lack of research is unfair to true victims.......2005-10-04
The funny thing about this book is, three years ago I would have believed every single word. Now I know better. The man who shot my friends father, and killed three of his friends is in this book. If his life was justifiably taken, then how many others in this book were as well.
It is a noble thing to point out injustice, but it does no service to anyone, INCLUDING and especially the victims, to not have researched the facts beforehand. A list of names means nothing if it is not well researched. This book was most definitely NOT well researched.
The authors should be ashamed. They have done more harm than good, both for people who want to know the truth, and for people who really have been victims of police brutality.
Important to read this book........2005-10-02
Kaylyn Cotton-Dobie, 34, murdered by two Reno police officers on March 24, 1999. Kaylyn was my ex-husband's sister and I knew her very well - since she was a teenager. Facts about Kaylyn: she joined the military after high school with her boyfriend on the "buddy" system. They subsequently married and had a daughter. Her husband decided he didn't want to be married anymore and they divorced. Kaylyn was smart, funny, thoughtful, hardworking and a devoted mother. She was not a criminal, she was not violent and she was not suffering from a mental condition - she had an argument with one of her neighbors that was loud and the police were called. They shot her in the kitchen of her apartment, in front of her daughter. Point blank in the chest. What we believe happened is she made a sudden movement and the police shot her - the story given to the press was a cover up. The stab wounds to the police officers were supposedly superficial, not even requiring stitches...I don't believe for a second they received anything more than scratches, if that. When I tried to get answers from the Reno police they kept reading me the Department's Public Relations story. Kaylyn's MURDER is included in this book.
A very bad execution of 'allegedly' good intentions........2005-09-15
I am disappointed to see that the authors of this book do not have enough honest interest in their own campaign to actually research the facts they provide. When trying to alert the public to a problem, honesty and transparency are always the best policies.
This book is neither honest nor transparent- it only gives a score of vague descriptions of circumstances that lack all the necessary detail to properly view the case, but are tuned to deliver the one message: the cops killed someone. To the authors of this book, it does not matter whether that someone was an innocent child, or a man with a gun shooting everyone in sight.
Their sole goal is to condemn the cops, whether or not they were at fault. I suggest that next time they publish under the title 'Down with all police', which will cause less confusion and bring their point across much more clearly.
I am amazed that the executive director Amnesty International gave a favourable review of this book. It is very disappointing and seriously undermines the credibility of the organisation. Do they jump to support anyone who cries 'Discrimination!' without ever checking the story?
The book stresses that the overwhelming majority of the 'victims' belonged to racial minorities. The fight of such minorities for equal treatment is just, but this book does nothing to help it. It stops at the primitive, barbaric act of stirring up hatred. How does that do any good? How does teaching people that 'all cops are murderers, all dark-skinned people are innocent' advance communication at all? It is as ridiculous a bias as the racial profiling these minorities fight against everyday.
Very disappointing.

Customer Reviews:
Step-by-step guide for young women in search of spirituality.......2004-05-25
Gwinevere Rain, author of SpellCraft for Teens, has recently come out with her second book, Moonbeams & Shooting Stars. Moonbeams aims to aid in the spiritual growth of teen girls like Rain herself and successfully hits the mark.
Loosely based on neo-pagan thought, this book also incorporates beliefs from a few of the other major religions in attempts to make it non-denominational, and while it doesn't quite succeed in that, it does provide an excellent frame for young women to explore their inner selves.
Rain encourages one to 'look to your soul, and build up the internal power you already possess. Then, use that amazing energy to aid others' (pg 8). Though she also suggests that "you try and stay away from pushing your beliefs on other people. There are other ways to help without bringing intense political or religious beliefs into the picture" (pg 16-17), providing a positive, but tempered message.
She offers inspiring suggestions regarding acknowledging one's fears, setting goals, and using visualization to see oneself taking the steps needed to achieve them. Rain also discusses the value of prayer, identifying with goddesses, and how to seek the aid and comfort of guardian angels.
Perhaps the most useful aspect of this little book are the journal exercises with lined pages to be used to explore the inner mind, accompanied by Rain's personal anecdotes. Of course, there are also numerous simple rituals and meditations, with a section on simple ritual construction toward the end.
Rain has provided a step-by-step guide for young women in search of their inner selves which is simple, yet sweet. Suitable for teens just beginning to explore their spirituality, but perhaps a bit light for those with more serious study in mind.
A starting place.......2004-04-29
This little book focuses on Teens and their connection to spirituality and the Goddess. It is a step by step guide to finding inner spirituality.
Ms. Rain's focus is on the female teen, offering a spiritual journey filled with personal empowerment as an alternative to the usual distractions of the teen years. The suggestion is to start young working on personal spirituality, enabling you to grow better and happier. She discusses some of the obstacles that many teens encounter, discusses her own personal experiences and has room in the book for personal journaling as you deal with events in your life.
I liked the layout, the progression of the book. The chapters deal with self, the Goddess, listening to the Goddess and finding your own personal power, exploring your points of hurt and finding healing within. There is a chapter that explores your own hopes and desires and how to set your own personal goals.
I had some trouble with her 'Angels' chapter. There are many religions that have 'angels' in their makeup, but to suggest that bodhisattvas, Orishas or Taoist Immortals are angels or angel like beings shows much Silver Ravenwolf influence and should have been left out. Bodhisattvas, Orishas and Taoist Immortals are Their own Beings, and should not be forced into someone's definition to accommodate a personal idea or writers need. Angels are angels in their own context and the religions they apply to and should not be included in someone else's pantheon for the sake of 'inclusiveness'.
Native American beliefs should not have been included either, as they too are a path unto themselves.
Ms Rain seems to have tried to include all paths, but reading the previous chapters, the material first appears Wiccan in nature but then shifts towards general pagan religious beliefs. She discusses Christianity and Judaism and Islam beliefs and then tries to include everything else. It becomes confusing as to what spirituality Ms. Rain was trying to focus on. If it was supposed to be a general spirituality, then Angels should not have been included or at least confined to their own origins and that would have eliminated much of the confusion and misinformation.
The balance of the material is good; it works well, and can be an excellent beginning for the teen girl who is looking to connect with spirituality and the Goddess and foster personal empowerment. The journaling is a good idea and works well with the material presented here. Nice book if you can overlook the youthful enthusiasm to be all inclusive on a Goddess path. boudica
Empowering, Eye-Opening, Must Read!.......2004-04-08
Moonbeams & Shooting Stars: Discover Inner Strength and Live a Happier More Spiritual Life is Gwinevere Rain's second book. Beautiful black and white photographs and mystical star images scatter across the pages setting an enchanting tone. Author Gwinevere Rain captures the readers attention at the very first page and takes us along on an eye opening spiritual journey.
Created for teen females of every religion, this book is truly a first of it's kind. Throughout these chapters Gwinevere aids young females in reclaiming their inner feminine power;
1. Dance Upon a Moonbeam: Embrace Your Soul
2. Welcome Change: Moon Wisdom and Phases
3. The Goddess Speaks: Ancient Power
4. Heal and Forgive: Life Issues
5.Catch a Shooting Star: Wishes, Hopes and Dreams
6. Angels by Your Side: Celestial Guidance
7. Create Positive Rituals: Acknowledge Inner Strength
Journal exercises and lined pages serve a duel purpose; to break up the text and inspire reader interaction. With deep profound advice, personal stories and words of true empowerment it's hard to believe that the author penned Moonbeams at the wisdom-filled age of eighteen. Her tone is consistent, supportive and sisterly proving that no young women is alone; we all have a Goddess inside.
An experience not to be forgotten, Moonbeams & Shooting Stars is a must read!
Book Description
Shooting to Live is the product of Fairbairn's and Sykes' practical experience with the handgun. Hundreds of incidents provided the basis for the first true book on life-or-death shootouts with the pistol. Shooting to Live teaches all concepts, considerations and applications of combat pistolcraft.
Customer Reviews:
Overpriced but Interesting look at history.......2006-08-26
Fairbairn and Sykes were way ahead of their time. Many of the concepts in this book can be seen today in several different forums; tactical pistol shooting techniques, concealed carry weapon and holster design, indoor shoot houses, moving target training and competition.
That said, there is some advice that has not proven itself over time. For example, they recommend you disable the safety on the 1911 and carry it without one in the pipe. Most people would disagree with that advice today for tactical as well as legal reasons.
Formatted as a small pocket book with a fuzzy "manual typewritter" font, with only 96 pages it can be read in a single session. A historically significant book that is well worth reading but overpriced.
Shooting to Live.......2006-07-03
This 1942 reprint was the first Practical Handgun Training Book for Police and Military. Experience taken from years with the Shanghi China Police Dept who patrolled the most dangerous streets in the World, this book was a compulation of what worked in over 600 deadly encounters between police officers using only handguns and criminals attempting to kill them. This is a great piece of history of law enforcement.
Of Greater historical than practical interest........2006-03-26
The book is a classic, setting forth what has become widely accepted doctrine on defensive shooting. It is clearly written and commonsensical. The chattiness gets a little tiresome, with all the references to the now-grizsled author's youth and adventures.
It's certainly interesting as an example of the first-generation of practical shooting books, but I'd advise people to borrow a copy instead of buying one.
Great Manual get it for 5.99 at usbjj.com.......2003-11-21
Great book, all the basics of handgunning. However, I would buy it at usbjj.com or ebay for only $5.99 on CD. The US Military's Marksmanship Training Manual is simliar to this, with more grip illustrations, but not as extensive in other areas. Still a classic.
The title says it all.......2002-09-28
One of the classics on combat shooting by two of the most interesting men that ever worked in law enforcement. Based on practical police experience in one of the worlds most dangerous cities the book lacks the usual macho posturing that many modern books have. The book quite simply is about "Shooting to Live". While there is no substitute for practice and training this book is a very good start on the practical realities of combat use of the handgun.

Although this book was very informative, it was very hard for my nine year old to read. I helped her with alot of words and I may add she's quite academic in school. I would start the age at 12 and up. Other than that it's full of facts for a book report.

Book Description
Jim Corbett's classic stories of hunting the man-eating tigers of India have thrilled generations of readers and made him famous world-wide. Born in India in 1875, Corbett was at home in the jungles from an early age, killing his first leopard when he was only eight. Tigers were his most
sought after prey but, in time, he began to turn toward conservation. From the mid-1920s he stopped shooting tigers for sport, only killing the man-eaters that plagued many Indian villages. In 1936 Corbett was instrumental in creating India's first tiger reserve--perhaps the world's first
"big-game park"--and was a devoted conservationist for the remainder of his years.
The Carpet Sahib is the story of this remarkable man. Martin Booth, who spent ten years of research on this definitive biography, follows Corbett's footsteps through the Himalayan jungles and foothills that provided the backdrop for some of his most hair-raising adventures. Booth brings to life a
man of inestimable courage and integrity whose love for India, her people, and her natural treasures was intense. Today, Jim Corbett is revered in Northern India as the legendary holy figure who fought the devil in his disguise as a man-eating big cat, and by those who have so enjoyed his gripping
collections of tales. This is the first book to reveal the man behind the myth.
