5 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it!.......2001-07-09

I've been waiting anxiously for a book on herbs and nutritional supplements that has some science behind it. It seems like most of authors just quote each other. This one actually looks at the evidence for these supplements, and in doing so, blazes new territory in alternative veterinary medicine. I think it's a highly useful reference for veterinarians and dog owners alike!

4 out of 5 stars Guide to Herbs & Nutraceuticals for Veterinary Professionals.......2000-08-31

This thin volume is intended as an introduction to herbs and nutraceuticals for veterinary professionals who are interested in incorporating some alternative treatment methods into their small animal practice. Dr. Wynn begins with the basic philosophy of holistic medicine and explains how to do a holistic evaluation. She then provides basic sample treatment protocols using herbs and nutraceuticals for a variety of ailments. She tends to err on the conservative side, not recommending, for instance, alternative treatments for heartworm disease although alternative heartworm treatments are available and often effective.

The most interesting parts of the book are the two materia medicas: one for nutraceutical supplements and one for herbs. While not very comprehensive, it's nice to have fully referenced material available in an area where there are many unsubstantiated claims. Each entry in the materia medica describes the supplement's actions, use, contraindications, potential adverse effects, and dosage.
All in all, a nonessential but nice addition to the library of the holistic animal health professional or the veterinary practitioner seeking to incorporate some alternative treatment methods.

The world's worst bioterrorist isn't the murderer who put anthrax spores into mail in the fall of 2001; it's Mother Nature, writes Madeline Drexler in this survey of infectious diseases. They're all here, described in detail from historical, scientific, and public-health perspectives: AIDS, influenza, the West Nile virus, and so on. Secret Agents is a good primer on each. The best chapter--and the scariest--may be the last one, which covers bioterrorism of the human variety (i.e., not Mother Nature). "If bioterrorists released smallpox virus, it would ... become a global calamity within six weeks," she writes. That's not even the scariest possibility: "Researchers estimate that as little as one gram of aerosolized botox could kill more than 1.5 million people." And there are no easy preventive measures. "Of the 50 top bioweapon pathogens, only 13 have vaccines or treatments." Because of this, Drexler calls for a massive increase in public-health funding. Without that, our doctors and hospitals will be unprepared for a disaster they may be able to anticipate right now. --John Miller

Book Description

So you think modern medicine has the whole virus game figured out? Think again. And it's not even a question of "if" we'll be hit by some new and deadly disease - it's "when." The war on germs is being fought on many fronts - from the skirmishes with disease-carrying mosquitoes that cross oceans hidden away in airline wheel-wells to the high profile battle against terrorists wielding deadly bioweapons. Today's bold headlines would have us believe that the biggest threat comes from bioterrorism. But don't underestimate Mother Nature, perhaps the most savage bioterrorist of all. Assisted by the increasing ease with which people - and the germs they carry - move across international borders, she's an effective force to be reckoned with, a key player on this battlefield. As author Madeline Drexler makes clear, we'd do best not to ignore her. As modern life grows increasingly complex, human beings and the pathogens that attack them are crossing paths more and more frequently. Whatever the infectious agent may be, whether its pandemic flu, foodborne illness, a debilitating disease carried far and wide by biting insects, or some new microbial horror we have yet to detect, keen surveillance and rapid response are really the only weapons in our arsenal. Secret Agents looks at today's new and emerging infections - those that have increased in attack rate or geographic range, or threaten to do so - and tells the stories of scientists racing to catch up with invisible adversaries superior in both speed and guile. Each chapter looks at a different threat: foodborne pathogens, antibiotic resistance, animal and insectborne diseases, pandemic influenza, infectious causes of chronic disease, and bioterrorism, including the latest information on the public health threats posed by anthrax and diseases like smallpox. Based in large part on material collected from the Forum on Emerging Infections hosted by the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C., Secret Agents is ultimately as engaging as it is disturbing. Drexler's thorough survey of the most current literature, supplemented by extensive interviews with today's top researchers in the field, yield a compelling portrait of a world engaged in a clandestine war. Emerging infections are among the many secret ties that bind the world into an organic whole. We know that infectious disease is an inescapable part of life. But we need to begin thinking globally and acting locally if we are to avoid the menace of a catastrophic outbreak of some new plague. Secret Agents sounds a clear and compelling call to take up arms against the organic predators among us. Madeline Drexler is a science and medical journalist based in Boston. A former medical columnist for The Boston Globe Magazine, she was a 1996-7 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Drexler was awarded the 1992 International Biomedical Science Journalism Prize by the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The American Prospect, Self, Good Housekeeping, and many other national publications.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative introduction to this subject.......2007-06-27

This book definitely leaves you kind of worried, showing you some of the deadliest pathogens known today. This microscopic world of bacteries and viruses has proven difficult to deal with in latest years due to misuse of antibiotics and the creation or formation of new strains like Influenza, a virus capable of pandemic. Thing is, as the author explain, there are several ways to be infected, airborne, by food, mosquitoes, even bioterrorism, a situation that makes you think if your country is prepared to keep it under control. The book read easily and softly, especially good for the layperson and in my case, awoke an interest to know more about it.

5 out of 5 stars A very thoughtful and thought provoking read.......2005-07-08

As a neophyte in the understanding of bacteria and infectious desease I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Knowing how fine a line we walk in our symbiotic relationship with bacteria is as frightening as it is fascinating. I belive this book should be required reading in schools.

3 out of 5 stars new agents out to get you.......2005-04-22

When reading this expose I had to remember that Ms. Drexler is a medical reporter researcher, and as such there are areas of her research that may not have been done in depth...otherwise the book is easy reading... The author has much to say regarding new and emerging viruses and bacteria and their ability to penetrate the animal-human barrier. Doctors and researchers are baffled in their attempts to locate the culprits which were in some examples birds spreading germs that jumped to humans. The flaw was Ms Drexler's misses the mark on the origins of the aids virus, choosing instead the old dry tail of the natives ate the green monkey story - ergo, they got the virus. This did not take much work!!! As current evidence shows the problem runs much deeper.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and interesting........2003-05-22

After hearing Madeline Drexler speak at my university, I had to read this book. It is clear that Ms. Drexler has put forth a lot of effort toward producing a well-researched and well-written book. There are many quotes from professionals on the front lines of infection control, and there are many examples of normal people suffering from frightening and strange emerging infections.

Drexler's book offers a warning that we must focus on public health issues if we hope to avoid the tragedy that an agent such as a pandemic flu could cause. The book is filled with warnings about the overuse of antibiotics and the inefficiency of public health beauracracy and lack of funding. I hope that more professionals and lay people read this book and heed its message.

4 out of 5 stars The Menace of Everything.......2003-03-12

Madeline Drexler's book is as frightening as she wants it to be. Secret Agents is a gripping, well-written fast read that should deeply frighten everyone on first glance. The subtitle is the menace of emerging infections but it could almost be changed to the menace of everything. There seems little escape from the possible scenarios she clearly presents (and this clarity is definately one of the book's strengths as she makes bio-science quite understandable for the layperson.) The chapter on the West Nile Virus that begins the book is particularly exciting and will the hook the reader immediately. If one pauses to look at the actual numbers, the book is somewhat less frightening as the numbers of deaths are always substantially below many of the doom-sayers' predictions, although she will repeatedly tell the reader this may not always be so. A fascinating book for our times.

      Book Description

While it is widely recognized that diseases in humans are emerging at an unprecedented rate, an often overlooked phenomenon is that the same issue is present in animal populations, where new diseases are occurring at an even faster rate than in humans.

This important new volume provides an in-depth review of various emerging diseases in animals and highlights the importance of veterinary medicine in the control of emerging diseases. It discusses the need for an awareness of emerging diseases in animals in preparation for emerging diseases in humans and offers and understanding of the serious negative consequences of animal diseases on human populations, including zoonotic potential, ecological impact, and compromising of the food chain.

The worldwide epidemiology of rickettsial diseases, including veterinary rickettsiology, is the focus of this volume, which is the second volume resulting from the 4th International Conference on Rickettsiae and Rickettsial Diseases. The heterogeneity of clinical presentations of rickettsial diseases is greater than had previously been appreciated, and atypical and previously unseen presentations are discussed here along with chapters on known vectors and vectors previously not known to transmit a given rickettsial species. This volume and volume 1063, New Insights into Rickettsioses, complete the picture presented at the conference of the wide range of work that is being carried out in rickettsiology worldwide. During the last century, the conservation of wildlife and the need to increase the production of animal agriculture, particularly in developing countries, have been in conflict at times, yet both have clear financial, biological, social, and even spiritual value for society. This volume addresses the problems of disease in both wildlife and domestic animals and the transmission of disease between the two populations. It examines ways in which we can conserve and manage animals in both sectors for optimal health and production, while preserving ecological communities. Diseases as diverse as tuberculosis, foot and mouth, and rinderpest are discussed. Global disease surveillance, the transmission of diseases between animals and people, and human dependence on healthy livestock and wildlife are also emphasized.

                  Book Description

The need to protect biodiversity places great constraints on the use of natural spaces such as forests and preserves and often conflicts with the need for sustainable intensification of agricultural and animal production. Human, domestic animal, and wildlife habitats have increasingly overlapped and have resulted in modified patterns of interaction between wild and domestic animals and humans. In such an environmental context, we can expect to see changes in disease transmission between animals and humans. We have already seen an increase in incidence of previously identified zoonoses, but the recent epidemic crises associated with the emergence of new zoonotic diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and avian influenza emphasize our need to understand and control disease emergence. The necessity for sustained development and growth of animals in the tropics requires that we identify and control factors that contribute to the emergence of these and other diseases. These factors have a direct effect on animal health and our ability to maintain it. We need to evaluate the risks of emergence at different levels including the optimization of diagnostic tools organization of control and prevention programs. Maintaining animal health in tropical Asian regions has a profound impact on tropical veterinary medicine and during a time of increased international trade and human mobility has implications for animal health worldwide. This volume explores the impact of these emerging zoonotic diseases on animal health in the tropics as well as all aspects of tropical veterinary medicine. Book Description

From coast to coast, all knitters have one thing in common: leftover yarn

Odd Ball Knitting solves the conundrum of what to make with your yarn stash by offering more than thirty beautiful projects that don’t look as if they were made with odds and ends. From stylish accessories to decorations for your home, there’s something fun and unexpected to knit from every strand you’ve been saving. Patterns are organized within chapters by the amount and type of yarn required to complete each project, so knitters with lots of extra yarn will rejoice in the Felted Patchwork Rug or the funky I-80 Poncho, while those with a more modest collection can stitch Curlilocks Finger Puppets, Mini Christmas Stockings, and other quick projects. For the scarf lover in all of us, a special section featuring reversible scarf patterns provides clever new ideas for everyone’s favorite first project.

Transforming your collection of mismatched yarn into stylish, practical accessories has never been easier. Author Barbara Albright offers strategies for using color, determining yardage, and combining yarn in unique ways. Odd Ball Knitting provides fresh new designs to change your hodgepodge of scraps into ingenious, fashionable, one-of-a-kind creations.

                  5 out of 5 stars No Leftovers!.......2007-07-07

The book arrived in great condition, exactly as described, if not better.
The author gives useful and clever ideas and instructions for creative uses for odd ends of left-over yarn from earlier projects. Often a knitter will carefully plan the yarn quantity so as not to acquire too much left over. In this attempt, the knitter may under-order the amount needed and never have enough to complete the project at all; since, dye lots are never the same when the yarn is not purchased all at once. With this book, the knitter has a safety net; leftovers are not wasted and, therefore, justify the purchase of the additional skein of yarn.

                  2 out of 5 stars slightly disappointing.......2007-06-01

I was a little disappointed in this book. I was looking for interesting ways to use leftover yarn from my stash. There were a couple of nice patterns, but overall there wasn't much new or inspiring. There are plenty of scarf and shawl patterns available on the internet, and the ones in the book aren't too intriguing. This is definitely just a book to browse at the library or bookstore for ideas, but not a necessary addition to a collection.

5 out of 5 stars "What" PLUS "How" of Dealing With Your Stash.......2007-03-11

I ordered this book expressly because the other reviews said it did cover more of the "how" of stash management. I was pleasantly surpised to find many delightful patterns, and lots of ideas that prodded my own creativity. While this may not be for all knitters, if you are a serious 'knitster' this is a great addition to your library.

                  2 out of 5 stars Creative? I Don't Think So.......2007-01-17

When I checked this book out at the library I was hoping for neat ideas for leftover yarn... as the title implies. However, what I got was how to knit scarves, socks, hats, and afghans. There's nothing creative to these patterns at all.. I already have these patterns. If you're looking for something new and funky, don't pick up this book.
