Great guide for first time Lab owners.......2000-06-27
I read this book knowing very little about the breed. We recently adopted an older chocolate lab, and needed information on how to care for her. This book was just the ticket! I recommend this book for general info about the breed, or for specific info on caring for your lab.

MUST READING for anyone that trains their own dog!.......1998-07-16
A lot of training books are done with the idea of showing you how to get your dog to do something, and if it doesn't work--you're on your own. RETRIEVE stays with you when things don't go just right--which is almost always. Here you will find as much common sense and uncomplicated advice as you'll find anywhere. The neophyte as well as the more advanced trainer will find many non standard but effective ways of dealing with problems that are unique to this book. At the end of each chapter is a list of common problems that occur in training--and how to correct them without shock collers, whips, ear pinch or any harsh treatment. The entertainment value is high in terms of training and trialing anecdotes. Bill writes with humor and message. This book is about dog training, of course, but it's more than that. Anecdotes scattered throughout lend humor to the book, and show attitudes and emotions that make sunrise in a duck blind a special feeling.

Indian Bead Weaving Patterns.......2007-09-15
The late Mr. Goodhue had a unique way of learning how many of the patterns he describes were originally executed: he would take a piece apart bead-by-bead to find out how it was constructed. This resulted in very detailed diagrams for many, many intricate bead weaving patterns. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow, although to get even tension and consistent results, some of the patterns require a good deal of practice.

This book is invaluable. I have seen many wonderful patterns for beading drived from it and the beaders have given the book credit. Many beautiful patterns come from this book and the artists use it as a base for their original designs. I hope it never goes out of print. I always keep two copies, just in case.

I can ditto everything Diane Fitzgerald says -- and I have her books as well. After I became familiar with the weaves in the book, I translated them to fashion colors and created many lovely items which I sold. By adding fringe or texture, by using iridescent or matte finish beads, by "driving on the shoulder" so to speak (i.e., doing an unstructured Oglala Butterfly around a featured handmade large bead), I could make all sorts of new looks. The diagrams are clear. I photocopied several to color with my own color scheme ideas before undertaking a project.
But I have to say this book quite saved my life when my life was falling apart. I had someone I loved in the hospital with a head injury, not even expected to live. I held a stressful job and the rest of my life was not going well at all. I began working Mr. Goodhue's book, working every weave. Culling seed beads through a magnifying lamp, listening to music or to books on tape, I could forget my problems for 45 seconds at a time! With this book, a few colors of size 11 beads, a package of needles and some size B or D thread, you'll have hours of fun and a lot of bracelets! And a whole lot more. I hope Horace is beading in Heaven!
Can't Be Beat.......2005-12-03
I bought this book a number of years ago and it has always been my favorite. After seeing some little beaded Indian men and women on necklaces in a craft store in Cherokee, NC, I wanted to learn to make some. Goodhue's book is the only book I have come across which has instructions for the little dolls (although I don't think he has a picture of them). The only thing that would make the book better is some larger, color pictures of finished products, but at least you can't beat the hand-drawn diagrams for bead placement and thread direction. I had never made a decent looking daisy-chain until I came across it!

Intermediate Instruction and Master Class Samples.......2006-06-27
`Beading on a Loom' by Don Pierce is sort of two books in one, and both suffers and gains from that fact. The book begins with something of an overview of basic seed beading techniques which, to someone like me, who did some pretty large self-designed American Indian style beading projects many years ago, is just right as a next step in teaching us how to, for example, do French woven chains, where the weave splits into two different runs of warp, to be joined at their ends with a clasp. This project also adds elements such as a medallion and fringes.
Looking through the `Tools and Techniques' chapter, one's initial reaction is that the book is a good elementary introduction to beading on a loom. However, while the instruction is very good, it really picks up at an intermediate level. I strongly believe that if I had no prior experience with seed beading, I would find myself doing a lot of fumbling around trying to make sense of some of the instructions. The three leading signs of the intermediate level of the book is that it does not bother explaining such elementary terms as warp and weft; it has too few photographs or illustrations of some of the most elementary techniques such as the look of a beading needle; and it cites no sources for beading supplies.
This is not to say that this is not a valuable book for a beginner. The second half of the book is a photographic gallery of beading pieces done by expert craftsmen. For someone brought up on American Indian beading techniques and designs, these pics are a revelation of what has been done by contemporary and historical artisans working in the European tradition of haute couture, elevating a simple craft to the level of high art.
The problem one faces with this book, just as I encountered when I read Colette Peters' `Cakes to Dream On' is that while I know all the basics of loom beading (and cake baking), the book really doesn't give me everything I need to make the leap from craft to art. Of course, it may simply not be possible to do this in one book, but the book clearly show one how high one can aspire in working in what seems to be a really simple technique. In that vein, the book scores points with me for giving a nice little bibliography on loom beading techniques. There is nothing more frustrating than wanting more from a book, without a clue as to where to go.
The fact is that the craft is a lot more complicated than what you will find in your Boy Scout merit badge pamphlet on Indian Lore! Also, one little thing which tips the scale for me between a four and five star rating is Mr. Pierce's very engaging writing style. In technical fields such as handicrafts and cooking for example, it is so nice to find someone who writes as entertainingly as he writes well about his subject.
Inspiration.........2005-10-27
I ordered this book having no loom experience at all. I was not disappointed. I read it from cover to cover, went to the shop and built a simple loom and began. The illustrations and examples were great inspiration. I did not make the exact pieces from the book, but used them for the beginning of my own works.
Calling All Designers.......2003-08-07
This is not a beginner's looming book, nor is it a pattern book. It is a book that will help you understand the history of loomed beading, how to do it, and how to design your own patterns.
I recommend this book for beaders who are experienced with looming and want to expand their horizons, because it will do that.
I will admit tho, I think this book is worth it for the eye candy alone!
NOT for a beginner.......2003-04-05
There are no simple projects here. From the outset, the book will discourage the beginner with the complexity of the 17th-20th century beaded items shown, although I enjoyed studying the photos of complicated beadwork on European purses, African Masai, Seneca, Winnebago, and other Native American pieces. Don's projects, in spite of detailed instructions, are going to require a lot of effort, even from an expert. There is plenty of inspiration from the 37-page gallery at the book's end. If you are intent on tackling loom weaving at its most complex, here is your book.

This is a nice book with great pictures. However, I think it is important to note that if you are searching for a beginner's how to loom book, this might not be a good starting point. The author does include many patterns and some lovely photos of exquisite loomwork, but the patterns are for folks who have some loom experience behind them.
