Book Description
Even though Cork is a short muskrat and Fuzz is a tall possum, they can still be best friends. Or can they? "I am older," Cork said. "I need to be taller. It is a rule." Can friendship break such rules?
The gentle, humorous story in this second Cork & Fuzz title will captivate beginning readers, while the charming illustrations add just enough visual cues to help them along.

The return of Cork and Fuzz.......2006-12-31
This is the second chapter book featuring Cork, a small muskrat, and Fuzz, a tall possum. Just as in their first encounter, the two friends continue to discover their differences and to try to overcome them so that they can remain friends. This time, the issue is the relationship of height to age. Cork is older but Fuzz is taller, and that seems wrong. The two try to compensate by finding ways to make Cork taller or Fuzz smaller. None of their approaches seems to work, and their friendship appears to be doomed as a result -- until they realize by studying a pair of nuts (!) that it's perfectly all right for them to be different in this respect.
Lisa McCue's illustrations bring the buddies to life and make otherwise awkward animals lovable. Dori Chaconas' dialogue is simple enough for young readers to handle, and it's interesting as well. "Cork and Fuzz: Short and Tall" will resound with those children who notice that they and their classmates are not growing at the same rate. This pair of animated characters will assure them that the situation is acceptable.

An award winning and very strongly recommended addition.......2007-01-06
"Muskrat Will Be Swimming" is the inspiring story of a native American girl who, with the gentle guidance of her grandfather, learns to find strength in her identity as a native American living in the broader American society. Elegantly illustrated by Robert Hynes, "Muskrat Will Be Swimming" also includes the Seneca creation story and demonstrates how such ancient tales of native American cultures can be utilized to help children find their way in the world. Author Cheryl Savageau has written a superb story that will entertain and inspire young readers in grades 3 through 6. Enhanced with a 'Teachers Take Note' section devoted to suggestions for activities and thematically appropriate resources, "Muskrat Will Be Swimming" is an award winning and very strongly recommended addition to elementary school and community library picturebook collections.
Muskrat Soon to be Back In Print.......2005-10-11
I am the author of Muskrat Will Be Swimming. Thank you to everyone who's contacted me about getting a copy. MUSKRAT will be republished by Tilbury Books in Spring, 2006, in paperback. Look for it!
Girl finds pride in herself and her heritage.......1999-11-08
I love this book and so does my six year old son. Very sensitively deals with namecalling. The young girl's grandfather sees that she is upset and by telling her a native amercian tale helps her find pride in her heritage and herself. Weaves together the present day story of the girl with the folktale very well.

Solid Starter Material.......2007-01-18
This is a fine starter series for kids interested in different animals. In Rodents: From Mice to Muskrats we return for a third experience with the wonderful and interesting Animals in Order series. What I like a great deal about this is that it takes time at the beginning of the book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a rodent, specifically getting into what traits exactly make a rodent. The book then goes into the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class , order, family and species (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them). This is one of the better features of this series. Next the text goes specifically into where Rodents fit into animal kingdom, breaking it down (in words and pictures again) to kingdom (animal), phylum (chordate), class (mammal) and order (Rodent).
The book also talks a bit about where rodents of all types and sizes fit into food chain and in habitats including fields and gardens; your house; the woods; and in streams, ponds and marshes. Rodents: From Mice to Muskrats goes from there into an overview of fourteen species complete with full page, color photographs for each one (our boy loved this best), which were quiet nice. This section includes Family, Common Example, Genus and Species and Size for each rodent discussed...from the tiny (2-4 inches) Old World Mice from Europe (and now quite common in North America) to the larger Species like Beavers (35-50 inches). Each animal is given one full page for written description and one full page color photo...excellent for bringing the animal to life for the readers!
Overall, a fantastic way to introduce various types of bats to your curious young reader! What you get in Rodents: From Mice to Muskrats is an excellent overview of all types of Rodents. My only complaint is that while the book gives many tips on catching a glimpse and/or studying these animals...nothing at all is discussed about what diseases the commonly carry or any danger of attack...and rodents can be quite viscous, other than that solid information that parents can temper with either direct discussion of the "negative" contributions of rodents to society or with additional reading that does point out this same information. As always with this series, I was pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this!
Book Description
Cork is a muskrat. Fuzz is a possum. From their first meeting in a hollow log to playing pin-the-tail-on-the-turtle, from collecting rocks to dodging falling pinecones, Cork and Fuzz are always up to something unusual. The gentle humor and simple story will entertain beginning readers, while warm, expressive illustrations add just the right amount of visual cues to help them along.

Corks & Fuzzies for everyone!.......2006-11-18
Any books I buy for the emerging young readers in our family have to pass MY entertainment test first. I'm a tough nut to crack. Fun AND learning are synonymous! This book passed with flying colors!!!
Cork and Fuzz had me laughing out loud all the way to the checkout counter. I applaud the author on creating such adorable, comical characters, engaging "easy to read" language. No simple task I'm sure.
I can't wait to be the audience for read-aloud giggles.
Delightful books for new readers!.......2006-08-03
I was so excited to discover this delightful series for new readers. So often, books for kids who are starting to read on their own are dull as dishwater. Not CORK AND FUZZ!
Dori Chaconas brings gentle humor and sparkle to these books as she does her picture books (ON A WINTRY MORNING, WHEN COWS COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, ONE LITTLE MOUSE, and MOMMA?).
Beautiful. I will certainly be recommending CORK AND FUZZ to my nephew and other kids I know who are starting reading adventures of their own.
Adorable.......2006-08-02
Cork and Fuzz is a great book for beginning readers. It creates two memorable characters, and subtly teaches about appreciating friends for their differences. My daughter, Meredith, loved it!
Funny Furries Make Fabulous Friends!.......2006-08-02
I am IN LOVE with Cork & Fuzz. This easy reader series is a favorite in our household. Cleverly written and endearingly illustrated, this pair is destined to take their place among other easy reader favorites. Look out Frog & Toad!!
No joy. .......2006-08-01
For some reason the story just falls flat. The characters should be engaging but they're not. My 4-year-old granddaughter had me read it twice but both times lost interest half-way through. I bought it because she has a thing for possums but apparently not this one. Disappointing.

Insider's view of the Eastern Shore.......2006-02-10
Douglas Hanks wrote this magnificent yarn about the townsfolk of a small Eastern Shore community (Oxford, MD) mounting a bid for the America's Cup. The designer of the vessel is a local boatbuilder that develops a radical concept. The town pulls together to help him build and campaign the boat. It is beautifully written and you'll be cheering the team on if you read it.
The best part is that anyone who spent any length of time in Oxford would have recognized the characters in the book as the real residents of the town, loosely cloaked in a novel's licensed perspectives. So it truly provides a great insight into life on the Eastern shore.
The worst part is that Pope's Tavern had a wonderful mural on the wall commemorating the team's effort and on display was a replica of the cup for all to see. Sadly, the last time we visited Oxford, Pope's was now a B&B, the Tavern was closed, and the building was up for sale. Oxford will never be the same if Pope's isn't restored.
Awesome, good sailing book.......2002-05-29
awesome book. best book ever. good sailing lingo. would recomend this book to any sailor/boater. easy to read im 14 and read this book very fast moving. can't put it down.
Wonderful Chesapeake Bay Sailing Humor!.......1998-11-24
This is a wonderful story of Maryland's Eastern Shore humor. The setting starts in the town of Oxford, MD where a few of the locals put their heads together and come up with their own specially-designed boat with local flare to enter the world-famous America's Cup Race in Perth. The result is a hilarious. All sailing advocates should read this wonderful story! And, for anyone from the eastern shore, some of the characters just might sound a little familiar...

But keep your tail out of the water while eating apples!.......2000-12-02
The life of a Muskrat is not easy. Oh, my, No! No,indeed! But if you work hard like Jerry to dig extra tunnels to the deepest part of the Smiling Pool, if you think clearly when the red fox flatters you, and if you can imagine a really wonderful way to cross that open field between the drainage ditch and the garden without being spotted by the noisy black crow, then, my Dear Friend, you can have all the fresh juicy carrots you can eat. And an unforgettable lesson or two about precious life in the bargain.

How to track down all of your favorite player's cards.......2004-05-05
Of course Beckett puts out what is pretty much considered the definitive price guide for baseball cards, which is also the place to go to if you are looking for a complete list of all the cards in a given year that you are working on (six cards to finish the 1953 Topps set and only four cards to go on the 1966). I also have my "Team Baseball Card Checklist" for working on Yankees cards by companies other than Topps. I do not have a need for the "Beckett Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist," but I can see exactly what sort of collector who would value this book, namely those who are trying to get all of the cards for their favorite player. Of course, that was a lot easier to do in the olden days when there was pretty much just one major baseball card company producing cards. I shudder to think of how many dozens of cards come out each year for Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez. But if your favorite player is anyone from Henry Aaron to Jerry Zimmerman, then this is the book that will tell you what you are looking for when you hit the shops and shows (actually some guy made the majors this year who replaced Hammerin' Hank as the player whose name appears first, but I do not remember his name).
As always, the good doctor provides more than well over a thousand pages devoted to players from A to Z. The introduction section contains sage advice on how to collect that covers everything from obtaining and preserving your cards to the differences between collecting and investing. There is also practical advise on how to use the alphabetical checklist. The target market for this particular checklist might be relatively small, but collectors will certainly appreciate having this available (I cannot speak to investors). Collectors of older cards will benefit even more from picking up this checklist because you do not need to pick up an updated version. There are thousands of new cards coming out each year, many of them featuring players who will never make it to the major leagues in the great quest to have the first official rookie card for the next Barry Bonds or Kerry Wood, but they are not making any more cards of the baseball cards of our youth.

A "must have" for card collectors.......2006-03-20
This is very simple. If you collect baseball cards, you need ths book. It's just that easy!!!
A must for card collectors.......2006-02-23
This book is an absolute necessity for baseball card collectors who are in search of specific players. The book alphabetically lists every player who has appeared on a baseball card. Not only does it list the major companies (like Topps), it does an excellent job of listing locally issued cards. It includes minor league cards as well. If you are looking for a specific player's cards, this is the best place to find every card produced of that player.
The only downside to this book is that it is fairly quickly outdated due to the glut of cards on the market. Back in the day, a great player like Hank Aaron might have 1 regular card and maybe 5-10 special or regional cards each year. Now, a player like Albert Pujols might have over 100 total each year.
That downside cannot be avoided, though. With that in mind, this book cannot do much more.
A MUST.......2000-04-21
THIS BOOK HELPED ME AND MY COLLECTOR FRIENDS SO MUCH , THAT I HAD TO GIVE IT TO ONE OF THEM WHO DOES NOT LIVE IN THE USA, AND THAT IS WHY I AM NOW BUYING MY SECI=OND COPY. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A checklist for the cards of your favorite basketball stars.......2004-05-21
Of course Beckett puts out what is pretty much considered the definitive price guide for basketball cards, which is also the place to go to if you are looking for a complete list of all the cards in a given year that you are working on (I am currently trying to finish both a 1971-72 Topps and the Fleer 1986-87). I do not have a particular need for the "Beckett Basketball Card Alphabetical Checklist, Volume 2," but I can appreciate that there are collectors who would value this book, namely those who simply want to collect all of the cards for their favorite players. True, this was a lot easier to do in the days or yore when there was just one major basketball card company producing cards each year. Now look at how many dozens of cards there are each year for a Kobe Bryant or a LeBron James. You might have been luck if your favorite player is Jerry West or Magic Johnson, but then most dealers are going to have star cards in a separate place in their stores or at shows. However, if you are trying to track down all the cards for players from your alma maters, say, all the New Mexico Lobos in the pros from Mel Daniels to Kenny Thomas, then this book will be a big help. Because this book is cross-referenced by college teams, it is a super big help in that regard.
As always, the good doctor provides over 300 pages devoted to basketball players from A to Z. There are thousands of new cards coming out each year and at that end of the spectrum you are never going to catch up, but for those of us who enjoy collecting the cards of the players we watched in our younger days, this is a helpful checklist.
