Customer Reviews:
Delightfully imaginative, a purely splendid experience for the whole family..........2007-06-08
With the birth of my daughter right around the corner my wife and I have been doing a lot of thinking about the books we want to read to her. Now, despite the fact that `Charlottes Web' may not necessarily be a book she'll be read right out of the womb; it was the first book that came to my mind. The greatest thing about this literary classic is that it's approachable to all ages, boys and girls, and it serves up some of the most memorable scenes in children's literature. I can still remember reading this book as a class when I was in Grade School and I loved every minute of it.
The story, as some have already explained, revolves around Fern, a young girl who is devastated when Wilbur, the runt pig of the litter, is going to be killed. After pleading with her father to spare him she's again devastated when her father forces her to sell Wilbur to her Uncle only to have him plan to fatten Wilbur up in mind to slaughter him. But then Charlotte comes up with a plan to save Wilbur's life, and well, the rest is classic!
To anyone familiar with the story of Wilbur the pig and the girl who loved him, this edition will be a must have for the family. Filled with wonderful illustrations that bring this tale to life, this is sure to be a favorite of everyone in the house, the children as well as their parents. My wife and I are always talking about how we want our daughter to watch cartoons that we can enjoy and read books that we can stand, and let me tell you, I have yet to meet someone who doesn't absolutely love `Charlottes Web'.
One wonderful aspect of this book is that it's not just about a pig, for, like a lot of children's book destined to teach morals and goals and principles, `Charlottes Web' succeeds with flying colors to teach children the power of love, acceptance and being yourself. `Charlottes Web' shows children that they can be anything, do anything if they put their minds to it. E.B. White hand wrote a masterpiece here, a beautiful piece of children literature that's loved by all and worth every penny.
Charlotte's Web.......2007-02-13
I never read this book as a child because I was a teenager when it was published. Our book group decided to read a good piece of children's literature for a change and we chose Charlotte's Web. We all loved it. Those who had read it as children welcomed the chance to read it with adult eyes. Nobody gave it less than and eight (out of ten) and I gave it a 9 1/2 because in my mind it is an almost perfect book that succeeds on many levels. It is amusing, instructive and also makes you think about how important values are in a life well lived. I hate spiders, but was almost in tears when Charlotte died. I guess I'll have to think twice before I try to squash one. I hope the new movie doesn't cheapen and trivialize this real treasure of children's literature.
Childhood Innocence and wonder at its best.......2007-01-10
Charlotte's Web Signature addition brought back all my childhood memories. The illustrations bring to life a story that is touching, imaginative and provides entertainment for all children, both male and female. The presentation of the book itself captures your attention with great use of colours which is continued throughout the book. The wonder and delight that this book has provided for my niece and nephew allows us as adults to see childhood innocence and wonder at its best.
Even if you already own a copy of 'Charlotte's Web', the Signature Edition is a must-have item!.......2006-11-15
Fern Arable has always been an animal lover. However, she had never saved a pig from an untimely injustice until the day she learned that her father planned on shooting a runt, just because he had been too small. Begging her father for a chance to save the little oinker, Fern wins the battle, and is given the opportunity to raise the wriggling piglet as her own. Promptly named Wilbur, Fern falls in love with her new charge, and can't get him off her mind, even while at school. But as he grows bigger and bigger each day, things begin to change. Soon, Mr. Arable refuses to allow Wilbur to sleep in the house, then her father reprimands her for taking Wilbur for walks in her doll carriage. Soon, Fern is forced to sell little Wilbur to her Uncle Homer, where Wilbur is quickly swept away, and forced to live. Fern doesn't mind the arrangement as long as she can still see her beloved friend. But when she learns that Uncle Homer plans to fatten the little piggy up and then kill him, she's devastated. As is Wilbur. Confiding in the other farm animals, Wilbur begs everyone for their help in saving his life. Sadly, none of the animals seem to know what to do to keep Wilbur from meeting his fate. No one, that is, except for an intelligent spider known as Charlotte. Charlotte lives right above Wilbur in his tiny alcove, where she spends her days and nights weaving beautiful webs. When she decides to help Wilbur by spelling words and phrases such as "Some Pig" and "Terrific" in her webs, the county becomes interested in visiting this amazing pig, leaving Uncle Homer in awe, and giving him the chance to spare little Wilbur's life.
CHARLOTTE'S WEB has been one of my absolute favorite stories since I was 6-years-old, which is why this Signature Edition of the tale instantly caught my eye. Yes, it is the same tale that we all know and love from years ago, however, this particular edition features some exclusive content that is absolutely essential for CHARLOTTE'S WEB and E.B. White fans. Aside from the gorgeous, colored illustrations by Garth Williams; and the wonderful large font of the story, this lap-sized edition features an entire Afterword by Peter F. Neumeyer, which features black and white photographs of E.B. White himself, as well as a brief biography about the famed author, pictures of his home, information about his other books - such as STUART LITTLE and THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN - and even has an exclusive area devoted to the illustrator, Garth Williams. Even more interesting are the illustrations of Zuckerman's Barn - which White modeled after his very own - and the various first drafts and changes to the tale that did not make it into the actual novel. Each and every one of these Afterword pages is an absolute marvelous addition to the tale, and gives the reader an even more in-depth into the man who created an array of lovable, unforgettable characters. Even if you already own a copy of CHARLOTTE'S WEB, the Signature Edition is a must-have item!

But sometimes, a dog will risk it all -- for a best friend.
Customer Reviews:
If only all children's books were like this!.......2007-01-27
This is my favorite story to read aloud to my second grade students. The characters are so endearing! Ms. Rylant paints a beautiful picture of true friendship without being preachy. She also includes enough suspense to hold the reader's attention and enough humor to keep them smiling. I love to read it to my students in late fall/early winter because of the vivid descriptions of the ice storm and changing weather. We feel like we're right there with Kona, Stumpy, and Murray! A truly remarkable story.
Gooseberry Park.......2004-02-09
I think people should read Gooseberry Park because it is exciting. It was hard to put down.
Can a dog be a hero?.......2003-12-10
Would you belive that a dog would help a squirrel instead of chasing the squirrel? Well belive it or not, in the story "Gooesbeery Park", a dog named Kona has a friend named Stumpy that is a squirrel. When a terrible storm hits Gooseberry Park, Kano begins to think that Stumpy and her newborn babies are in deep trouble. Kano goes on the most dangerous adeventure for Stumpy. He will have to go through the most difficult part. That is to go throught the ice cold park. Will he be able to do this in time? He will just have risk anything just for his best friend! Will Kano make make it to Stumpy before the weather gets worser or will he fail his adventure? Who knows what will happen to Kano?
I'm bats about Murry!.......2002-10-11
This is such a funny book. The characters all seem so real. I kept forgettting they were animals not people. I wish they could be my friends.
Wonderful Read-Aloud.......2001-11-15
I used this in my 3rd grade class as a teacher read-aloud and the students loved it. It had characters that all students could relate to --whether it was the sense of humor and crazy antics of Murray, the bat,the heroic deeds of Kona, the labrador retreiver, the straight talk from Gwendolyn, the hermit crab or the motherly sweetness of Stumpy, the squirrel--all children of various learning abilities could enjoy the story. When Stumpy lost her children in an ice storm that toppled her tree, the children were interested in how she would get back to them. When Murray was caring for the babies in the basement, the students would laugh at the bat's appetite for junk food and television. They were delighted and so was I. A real pleasure to read.
Book Description
Her wings burdened by an oil slick, a seagull struggles to the nearest port to lay her final egg. Exhausted, she lands on a balcony where Zorba the cat is sunning himself. She extracts three extraordinary promises from him: that he will watch over the egg, that he will not EAT the egg, and that, when it's time, he will teach the baby gull to fly. The first two promises are hard enough, but the third one is surely impossible. Isn't it?
Customer Reviews:
A must have for Children.......2005-04-15
Kengah is a gull on a journey to lay an egg where, when hatched, the chick would grow and thrive safely. Zorba, a coal-black cat, is anticipating a month's vacation from his human friend.
But when Kengah's wings are weighed down by an oil slick, she aborts her travel plans and struggles to the nearest port to lay her final egg. Kengah is able to fly to the balcony of a nearby apartment building where she meets Zorba. As Kengah lays dying, Zorba promises three things; that he will not eat the egg, he will watch over the egg, and when it's time, he will teach the chick to fly. Zorba is a cat with a sense of honor and with three cat friends, struggles to learn about gulls so he will be able to keep his promise to the dying gull.
The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly by Luis Sepulved is an extraordinary tale about the lengths a parent will go for a child. It is beautifully written with compassion and humor. It proves that when commitment, honor and love are involved, great differences can be overcome.
The black and white illustrations are amazing. This is a book for ages 8-12 and one that parents will want to read to and share with their children. This book and its message are so beautiful that it should have a permanent place in that special child's library. I love this book!
Wonderful to Read Aloud.......2004-07-14
I read this book to my 7 year old twin girls, and the three of us loved it. The vocabulary, the humor, the characters were all wonderful. I have high hopes that the author will continue to write children's books.
Book Description
David and Marc Muench examine the forces of nature in this breathtaking book. Every page reveals the awesome power of our planet and the primal forces that endlessly shape it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent photos but poor reading.......2002-12-28
Like always, the Muench's photos are excellent but from the viewpoint of a book; especially, a how-to book, this book has not met its mark.
Lots of rumblings but does not delve into techniques and how-to's.
Conclusions: good coffee table book but it will not be in landscape photography reference shelves.
Like None Other,!.......2002-12-13
This is an absolutely EXQUISITE Coffee Table Collectible,! One of the BEST Landscape/Nature Collections Available. Expertly Formatted, with rich, eloquent, narrative and lively expose'. You will find yourself drawn back to this volumne time and again,!!
Surreal Images of Primitive Forces that Shape Our World.......2001-03-09
Unlike most books of natural photography, this one is filled with outstanding essays that explore the ancient beliefs, philosophical observations, and scientific knowledge that have evolved about the fundamental forces of earth, air, fire, and water. The landscapes are often reproduced with colored filters to give them an alien appearance, that makes the images seem stranger and more powerful. Double exposures help reinforce the theme of the compounding effects of these primal forces on one another. This book, as a result, becomes an interesting example of how photography can be used to extend our understanding of a subject rather than just show us examples or beauty. Very high quality paper and reproduction enhance the message's effectiveness.
The book is in four primary sections, one each on "earth," "air," "fire," and "water." The essay on "earth" deals with plate tectonics. "Air" talks about atmospheric circulation, storms and how wind affects the land (especially through sandstorms). "Fire" talks about volcanoes, forest fires, and the effect of fires on plant life. "Water" explains about floods, ocean currents, tides, waves, and rivers. The images in each section capture many of the elements in the essays.
In a final brief essay on "The Living Earth" the Gaea Hypothesis is introduced, which is the idea that these forces interact in a way that balances out to keep life viable on the planet.
My favorite images in the book included:
Mount Assiniboine, British Columbia, Canada
Neon Canyon, Utah, USA
Navajo Sandstone, Arizona, USA
Redwood, California, USA
Mono Lake, California, USA
White Sands, New Mexico, USA
Haystack Rock, Oregon, USA
Littoral Cone, Hawaii, USA
Red Rock Crossing, Arizona, USA
Waimea Bay, Hawaii, USA
Milford Sound, New Zealand
Neskowin Coastline, Oregon, USA
I also suggest that you try to find ways to visit these scenes. As wonderful as photographs are, the actual experiences can often be more emotional and fulfilling. Armed with your knowledge of the sites from the essays, you should be better able to appreciate the impact that these forces are having when you are next to them.
Feel and act in accordance to the connections within nature!
The Muench tradition continues........2000-09-13
Another gorgeous production by the Muench father & son combination. The maturity of Marc`s work continues to improve with every new book they produce together. The accompanying essay by Michelle A.Gilders is also extremely fascinating, and compliments the photographs perfectly. Perhaps my only gripe is the number of double exposures and magenta filtered pictures in this book. Artistic maybe, but not as true a representation of the World as David`s earlier work. Still, with such high quality paper, and very good production work, I certainly can highly recommend it. Thankyou again,David and Marc, for insight into a world that few of us ever truly have the chance(or the vision) to see.

Perfect book! I love it!.......2003-12-24
This book is a really great book! Your kid would love it. Very imaginative adults would love it too. But only imaginative adults. If you aren't imaginative, then this book isn't for you.
There is another book by the same author that has, I think, the same characters in it. It's called Faith and the Rocket Cat. I haven't read it yet, as you might have guessed, but it's supposed to be really good
If you like Faith and the Electric Dogs, you'll love Faith and the Rocket cat!
an interesting book.......2003-11-07
The writer tried to tell us an interesting story through a dogs' view. Other than learning English and new vocaburlaries, we can also learn spainish by reading it. Beacuse the reader is at the view of an electric dog, we probably will go through somethings like Bowwow or any languages within dogs. The whole story is in a funny and informal atmosphere. In addition, the English used is not very difficult to understand too. I really do think that this is a recommendation-worthy book for anyone who wants to spend their spare time with laughers.
Good Book.......2003-10-22
I choose this book and thought that I would just read one chapter but it is cool how they used spanish dialog. I read the book and now i am reading "Faith and the Rocket Cat."
The Bone shaped Island.......2003-10-21
The book I just finished was Faith And The Electric Dogs. It might be hard to understand because it contains a little Spanish. There is a translation on the sides and a glossary in the back of the book. It even translates into dog language!
This book is about a girl named Faith. She is an American girl who lives in Mexico. She hates Mexico and wants to go home. One day, she finds a stray dog that saves her from a big bully. She keeps him and names him Eddie. One day, she decides to buy a rocket. The rocket looks like a peacock. She takes off and lands on an island that is unamed. It is in
the shape of a bone.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a big imagination and wants adventure.
Weird, but I'm sure younger children would enjoy it.......2001-08-12
This book was about a girl named Faith who moved to Mexico. She didn't know how to speak Spanish, and didn't think it was possible for her to learn. This presented a problem at school, where most or all of the people didn't know how to speak English. She wanted to move back to San Fransico, but her mom said no. So, she built a rocket ship and ended up flying to some island. It was really strange, but I assume younger children would like it.
Product Description
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was a major figure in American art for seven decades. Throughout that long and prolific career she remained true to her unique artistic vision, creating a highly individual style that synthesized the formal language of modern European abstraction and the themes of traditional American pictorialism. The main subjects to which she returned again and again were the flowers, animal bones and landscapes around her studios in Lake George, New York, and New Mexico, and these became her signature images.
This comprehensive and illuminating new book by a noted scholar on O'Keeffe and her work surveys the complete oeuvre -- drawings, watercolors and paintings from all periods -- and explains her life in the context of her artistic output. The text, which incorporates current scholarship and benefits from the recent publication of the artist's catalogue raisonne, is accompanied by a full complement of color plates and comparative black-and-white photographs.
