Well done.......2006-04-16
This is a marvelous book. Get on the hunt and find the golden egg.
My 2 year old daughter loves this book!.......2002-03-24
As I am typing this review my two year old daughter is looking at the picture of the "Big Egg" book and saying "Big Egg!" Each night we read many books together. She picks them out as we go. I can always tell which books she prefers based on the order in which they are picked. "Big Egg" is always one of the first books to be read. She loves the simple language and colorful pictures and I enjoy reading it to her repeatedly. It's fun to "act" out the different animal voices the Hen encounters on her search for the parent of the "Big Egg."
Sweet story that makes young readers laugh.......2001-12-06
Easy and fun to read, with nice values. The illustrations help make it funny also. A family favorite.
Favorite Book.......2000-05-27
Great book to start your child reading with. Big Egg is my 4 year old daughter's favorite book. The pictures and story are funny and interesting. I like it as well! This book gets my daughter's HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
Great Beginning Reader.......1998-03-28
This was the first book that my daughter read on her own, and what joy she had on her face when she read the last page! A wonderful use of simple words and repitition makes this a great book for children just starting out to read. I wish there were more books like this one! Catherine, mom to Caroline

The Cuckoo Child.......2001-07-29
I thaught this book would be good because it had a funny name. It was good too. The cuckoo child is about a boy who loves birds of any kind. He lives with his Mom, Dad, and sister. his name is Jack Daw. In the begining Jack sees some chickens hatch. Then he ascked his father when he could have some birds of his own. His father said when he was 5. On his 5th he got budgerigars. For his 6th he got bantams. For his 7th, ducks. Then his 8th birthday came and he got geese. He named them Lidia and Wilfred. The next day Jack was going on a field trip with his class to the Wildlife Park. When they got there, there were more birds than he had expected. And then he saw it; the great male ostrich. It was amazing. His teacher came back for him and they cept going. Then they came to a sign that siad:Ostriches->. His teacher read the signthat told about ostriches. Jack asked his teacher if they would see any eggs. A man "ansered you will see lots". It was a park ranger. He showed them some eggs. After the park ranger showed them the eggs Jack sneaks an egg into his back. What happens to the egg? Read this book and find out!
The Kid and the Bird.......2001-07-19
I read this book because it was my second choice, and because everyone else was reading it.
Jack Daw loves birds, any types of birds. One day Jack and his class went a field trip to the local zoo. He finds himself looking straight at a nine foot tall, 345 pound ostrich! Then Jack comes up with a plan. Jack steals an extra ostrich egg that's about to be fed to a snake! Then he brings the ostrich egg back home to his family's farm.
If you want to find out what happens to the ostrich egg, and you like birds, read this book! It's very interesting!
The Odd Bird.......2001-06-13
I read this book because our teacher said that if we put a book review on Amazon.com we could keep the book. So why not? Before I read the book I thought it was about a child that was crazy about something,I didn't even think that it was about birds. The main characters in this story are Jack,Oliver,Lydia, and Wilfred. Jack has a way with birds and he is always with them he loves them so much that he gets them for birthday presents. One day his class goes on a field trip and he gets something if you what to find out read this book. This book is very interesting i think it is a very good book for all ages it is only a 127 page book too! This is one of those books that you take time out of your day to read it!
An on the farm kinda bird!.......1998-10-02
This book is very interesting if you like birds. A boy takes an egg and hatches it. Its an ostrich. he raises the bird. Then the bird gets to big for the farm. What will happen to the bird? Read this book to find out!

Book Description
Illustrated in full color. Beloved storyteller Verna Aardema is at her finest in this African animal tale, weaving charm and suspense with a delightfully satisfying resolution. Peering down from her treetop perch, a lonely lioness admires the noisily cheeping clan of Mother Ostrich and thinks, "I would be happy to have just one child." So she leaps down, gurum! and steals all four ostrich chicks. Accepting the lioness as their mother, the chicks follow right behind he. Mother Ostrich is frantic! As she chases after the lioness, she enlists the help of gazelle, hyena, jackal, and mongoose. But which one can help her to get her chicks back? With art by Yumi Heo that blends primitive, African, and folk styles, The Lonely Lioness and the Ostrich Chicks is a captivating picture book destined to be a classic.

OVER-RATED.......2004-02-17
This book contains a wide variety of topics on emus, but does not give enough useful detailed information. It is too generalized and seems afraid to mention actual brand names of feed and equipment. This is not a book for those looking for a step-by-step, detailed "how-to" reference guide.
The EMU Farmer's Handbook, Volume 2, Maria Minnaar.......2000-05-28
This is a thorough treatment on a hard-to-find subject. The book covers all aspects of raising emus, including: housing, health, breeding, incubation, raising chicks, and marketing emu products. The author, Maria Minnaar, has been raising emus commercially since the mid-1980s. This book is aimed at the commercial emu farmer, with detailed information on veterinary care, breeding, meat cuts and emu oil processing. The author provides one chapter on raising Ostrich and Rhea, highlighting the differences between these birds and emus. There is an interesting section covering other ratites, the Cassowary, Kiwi, Moa and Elephant Bird, and a good bibliography of ratite information sources. The drawings and photographs are high-quality.
Customer Reviews:
An enchanting tool.......2000-06-26
This book is a wonderful way to teach children the dangers of exaggerating while also teaching that not every little thing is the end of the world, following the adventures of a young ostrich as she wanders through the savannah, stirring up trouble. Adults will enjoy the illustrations above all, as is prevalant in the entire Serendipity series.

This is my favorite bible translation. It is a very small and compact bible as advertised. Because of this, the text is VERY small. It is fine for most circumstances, but can be a pain in low light or those with poor eyesight.

This is an endearing story in rhyme........1998-12-01
This book has a great flow, similar to Dr. Seuss stories. The tale is a sweet story of a baby ostrich who is adopted into a herd of zebra. The illustrations and exciting words are great fun!!! Great read aloud! ! ! The rhyme and story line are fast paced. As a substitute teacher, I've read this to several age levels and it always keeps the kids interested. My own children ask to hear it again and again! You have to read it. All of Bill Peet's work in rhyme is fun!
This is my absolute favorite children's book!.......1998-08-29
No matter how many times my children ask me to read this book, and they ask alot, I never mind reading it again. It has a powerful "do the right thing and it will be returned to you" message.
Product Description
In this age of globalization, fear of terrorist threats and pandemic diseases such as AIDS, author Jean Davison returns to Mt. Kenya's foothills to discover how farmers whose lives she has followed for 20 years, view the changes of the last decade, especially the seismic shift in the political landscape at the end of 2002. It's a tumultuous moment; villagers are dancing in the streets. They walked miles to vote. The sole party in power since independence was trounced. With keen insight and a sensitivity born of living elbow to elbow with Kenyan villagers, Davison captures their anxieties and hopes for the future and links them to our own hopes in America. Part travel tale and part social commentary, "The Ostrich Wakes" both engages and enlightens us. It is unique in drawing on the voices of both elders and, especially, young people and weaving them into her story.
Customer Reviews:
A collection of stories depicting a dramatic national metamorphosis.......2007-05-16
Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (5/07)
Dr. Jean Davison, an anthropologist, returns to visit the foothills of Mt. Kenya. Davison returns to Kenya to discover how the Gikuyu farmers view the changes of the last decade in their country. Her return to a land where she had lived, worked and studied twenty years earlier came at the very time the political party in power since Kenya received independence, had been replaced. Excitement was everywhere. Expectations were high.
The remote rural areas of Kenya have become linked to the global coffee and tea markets, as well as the internet, TV, and cell phones. Any change will benefit some and disadvantage others in this age of globalization. The title of the book "The Ostrich Wakes" speaks of the many changes in Highland Kenya: the coming of electricity, improved transportation, and the availability of education. This is a wakeup call at a time of crisis. Davison was particularly concerned about the impact of these changes in relation to "Women's Concerns" in education, economic opportunity, property rights, overpopulation, family planning skills, and "AIDS."
Dr. Davison contacted village elders and youth alike to learn how they had been impacted through these transitions. She visited old friends to interview them about the long awaited changes in the government, the uncertainties of the economy, of the trends in agricultural, and the educational opportunities available to the children and youth of Kenya.
As she retraced her steps of earlier visits she was particularly interested in how traditions, customs, rituals, and coming of age rites had changed since her last visit. Among others she interviewed four generations of one family to get a comparison of how time and education have impacted how they learn, what they had learned by observing their mothers, and what they had learned in the more formal school setting. Many of those interviewed were open and frank, and shared freely in their stories of coming of age, marriage and childbirth. Others were more private, especially when questions concerned the older rituals and rites associated with girls coming of age.
I appreciated the unique approach Dr. Davison used to present the results of her research. She writes using a story form narrative in her interviews. Her presentation of background material on the government, history, and geography of Kenya is woven into the stories in a unique and entertaining way.
The subject matter of "The Ostrich Wakes" is enlightening and useful, an important addition to the studies available on the threat, prevention, and treatment of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in third world communities. It is the story of an awakening of a people from the lethargy and sense of despair. This is a book of travel, of warm stories from peoples of another culture, as well as the results of an anthropology research study.
A compelling, informative, and highly recommended history of social struggle and progress.......2007-05-13
Anthropologist, academician and lecturer Jean Davison is the founder of the `International Development and Education Association', a non-profit group dedicated to linking small communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through developing seed funding for self-help projects with sponsoring groups in the United States and Canada. "The Ostrich Wakes: Struggles For Change In Highland Kenya" is the story of the women of Kenya who some twenty-five years ago lived under cultural, political, religious, and economic circumstances that subjected them to the devastation of female circumcision, lethal communicable diseases, forced marriages, physical and sexual abuse on a daily basis, and a lack of educational opportunities, but today are becoming educated and active in urban small businesses, seeing substantial improvements in health, and governmental laws providing them protections that include being able to reject genital cutting, refusal of marriage proposals, prosecution for rape (a practice so wide spread in Kenya that Kenyan leaders declared it as their nation's most pervasive human rights issue). A compelling, informative, and highly recommended history of social struggle and progress in Kenya, "The Ostrich Wakes" is enhanced with the inclusion of numerous notes and a glossary.

Pure pleasure and inspiration.......2006-03-04
Just received this book and only reluctantly put it down. If your creative urges lean towards the unusual you'll not be disappointed in Hansson's tin can art. He shares his techniques and his own 'personal art history' with a style that's both conversational and folksy. You won't be able to look at a tin can the same way after reading this book!
Pleasant Misunderstanding.......2005-08-22
The book was interesting. I thought it was going to be more of a how to do book.

Book Description
Tin toy mania! Now that computer games have come to stay, tin toys have become obsolete for today's children. For those of us who remember them from times past, these tin toys can transport us back to our childhoods; they call up a vision of a time we thought we had already forgotten. They also bear witness to history; they have survived wars and crises, and tell us something of the fashions, colors and tendencies of their times.
This book will be of special interest to anyone fascinated by early space travel and technology, those who simply want to wax nostalgic about a bygone era of their youth, and of course to collectors and fans of 50s and 60s tin toys. The roots of today's toys can be seen in these precursors, notably in the early transformer robots. Taken from collector Teruhisa Kitahara's vast collection, which is on display in many museums in Japan, the tin toys featured here are quite rare and give a wonderful overview of this era in the history of toys. A must for any toy lover!
Customer Reviews:
Imagination: The Last Frontier.......2006-04-20
Kitahara's world famous tin toy collection has been photographed many times, and featured in very small paperbacks and large coffee table spreads. This is probably the happy medium; a very inexpensive, large (nearly 350 pages) and visually inviting photoessay that lets the toys speak for themselves.
As many books as there are on tin toy robots, they nearly all feature the same collections, and so the photography and presentation become paramount. Taschen has often featured Kitahara's museum(s) but never to better effect than in this inexpensive volume. Kitahara's collection also includes non-space themed tin toys, but this book concentrates on the robots and space toys from the '50s and '60s when Japan brought unbridled creativity and unparalleled design to tin toys.
Book Description
Known as the "Modern Toy" company from their trademark, the Masudaya Toy Company, Japan's oldest, was started in 1724 and is still in existence. The popular toys they have produced -- including aircraft, boats, cars, trucks, military vehicles, people, household appliances, space exploration, and much more -- depict real life events and have stimulated imaginations for centuries. This outstanding book is the first on Japan's leading toy maker and worldwide exporter. It features over 1200 photos of colorful and charismatic toys, most dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, the "Golden Age" of Japan's leading export. Toys produced into the early 1980s, including those for foreign markets, are included as well. Descriptions for over 1800 toys include their years of production, type of action, size, and current value. This essential reference guide will appeal to specialized and general toy collectors alike.
Customer Reviews:
Nice lay out!.......2005-12-06
I think this is a great book. A good selection of photos for the expert collector as well as for the beginner. Good to see reference material on items that you actually have a chance to find at a reasonable price.
It's all right............2005-11-19
As a long-time collector of Japanese tin toys, I'm always eager to acquire new reference works, especially where most of the illustrations are in color. This book is ok, taking into consideration that Modern Toys Company is more or less the Budweiser of the Japanese tin toy industry. The pictures are small but quite high quality. My main reservations lie with the overwhelming number of toys from the 1970s that are pictured. As far as I am concerned, this was the nadir of their industry and most Jap tin toys made in that period are at best mediocre. They incorporate inordinate amounts of plastic, pretty crude shapes and in general are reminiscent of modern Chinese tin.
I expect I'll keep the book mainly because I maintain an extensive reference library. But if you're expecting anything at all close to the superb Kitahara titles, be warned. There are a number of quality toys pictured, but not enough.
Why it was necessary (given the long history of Masudaya) to provide no fewer than 20 illustrations of the 1970s Overland Express or Hill Climber trains, which came in numerous slightly different shapes and colors, I cannot imagine. This toy and its versions may excite the totally clueless dealer who finds one and puts it on Ebay as "probably 50s", but it has zero appeal to collectors. Indeed, when one is searching for "Japan Trains" on Ebay one spends most of one's time skipping over the endless examples of the Overland/Hill Climber offered for sale; which incidentally hardly ever get any bids.
A large proportion of the toys in the book don't deserve coverage, I'm afraid to say. The Japanese made very few charmless toys up through the 60s, but they made up for lost time in the 70s.

Tomart's Dollhouse Book.......2007-09-23
I was very satisfied with Amazon. My book was packaged extremely well so that the pages wouldn't get messed up. I was surprised at how fast I received it too.
Great Reference Book.......2006-05-23
Great reference book for collector of 40's and 50's plastic doll house furniture. Copyright in 1997 makes pricing guide a tad out of date . . . nevertheless a good starting reference price range. Great photos. Interesting information on producing companies.
Beautiful, colorful, informative!.......2006-04-19
This is a wonderful reference quide for baby boomers who want to collect dollhouses and furniture! What great memories this book brought back. I found doll houses and furniture I once had and some of the models my cousins and friends had in the 1950's! This is a trip down memory lane and the price is great for this publication. Amazon delivers quickly, too!
A Great Resource.......2001-11-29
I purchased three books on tin toys and dollhouses, and this one was the best by far to help me evaluate some tin/metal doll houses I was buying.
The book sections are by the doll house maker, with excellent photographs that help identify them, and estimated years that they were sold.
In addition there are photographs of the furniture that you would typically find in these houses. This helps alot if you have just purchased an empty doll house, and you want to furnish it with vintage items of the correct size and type.
Simply an excellent reference book for tin doll house collectors or just old-timers wanting a bit of nostalgia :)
An excellent reference to tin litho houses........1999-05-03
Mary Brett has written the Bibile of Tin Litho houses. Excellent pictures of the houses detail their interiors, exteriors and the furniture needed to make them cosy little homes. All major producers are covered, Marx, Cohn, Wolverine to mention just a few. Ms. Brett also includes a section on the more unusual items, such as the rare and unique Friendly Folks Motel. Better buy two copies, this book is destined to become dog-earred and worn before very long.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading Title On Cover.......2003-02-22
While the quality of the book is fine, the printed title on the cover is deceptive ("1000 Robots, Spaceships, & Tin Toys"). Robots and spaceships are only a very small fraction of the "1000" pictures.
Apparently, the book was formerly titled, "1000 Tin Toys" which is much more accurate.
More than a tin soldier.......1997-04-12
More than a tin soldier.
1000 Tin Toys by Teruhisa Kitahara, photographed by Yuko Shimizu.
Call this book the mother of all collecting books. It is a vast compendium of photographs of 1,000
tin toys collected by obsessive Japanese master collector Teruhisa Kitahara. A visual
feast of full-color photos that gives one pause to consider Kitahara's life work of
collecting. Truth be told, an inspiration for artists, designers, photographers, tin toy
collectors, and children of any age. Why would anyone want to own this book? For
the same reason that anyone would collect over 1000 tin toys- the sheer delight of it.

Customer Reviews:
I love this Book!.......2000-12-02
One of the best books ever written on Post war toys from Japan. Beautiful color photos of toys and their boxes, along with production dates and quantities, dimensions, description of actions, scarcity ratings and values. Patent drawings and illustrations are included for many toys. This book contains the most extensive listing of Japanese toy trademarks I have ever seen. I have been collecting Japanese tin toys for 35 years and this listing alone makes this book invaluable.
Book Description
The very popular, high quality tinplate toys of the mid-20th century from Nuremberg, Germany, are discussed in a historical setting in this delightful book. The chapters include 300 color photographs, information about the manufacturers(especially Schuco and Bing) and their markings, and essays on the past, present and future of this special toy industry. The mechanical figures, automobiles, trucks, trains, machines and associated buildings that are presented will remind many of the best toys of their youth. They are avidly collected today.
Many of the toys shown are from superb private collections and the Toy Museum of Nuremberg.
