4 out of 5 stars Better Trout Habitat: A guide to Stream Restoration and Mana.......2001-11-01

This book provides an in depth review of the methods and techniques used to provide habitat characteristics to a variety of streams. The writting style is excellent for both the lay reader as well as someone with a scientific back ground. However, it does not dwell on some fot the more technical details which requires a more technical level book to provide more indepth details. However, as a general manual to habitat resoration it provides an excellent background as well as the necessary caution needed when conducting these types of instream restoration projects.

4 out of 5 stars Good Trout Habitat and Life Cycle Reference.......2000-06-07

This book offers a good variety of man-made trout improvement structures, but the current (2000) state-of-the art in trout habitat improvement trends toward a more natural, vegetation and channel reconstruction approach. This book provides excellent design guidelines and background information on trout and their life cycle, and perhaps the most useful part of this book was the author's ability to teach the reader enough about the habitat requirements of trout to allow the reader some latitude and innovation with their habitat improvement designs.

I personally enjoyed the workable, readable and philosophical approach to fish habitat improvement, and I believe that this book would be a good reference for anyone who wishes to improve trout habitat.

Remember, an ounce of habitat preservation is better than ten pounds of habitat restoration efforts! (Also, the information in this book will help the reader become a more effective trout fisherman!)

3 out of 5 stars Variation of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Spider.......2006-11-12

This Old Lady swallows everything in the ocean from a trout to the ocean itself. In the end she pukes out the ocean with such a commotion.

The rhymes are okay. The pictures are vivid and busy. I like the attempt to recreate this old story with a new tune but (and I know the real story of the old lady swallowing a spider and dying at the end from swallowing a horse is morbid) I still prefer the original.

5 out of 5 stars The old lady, Northwest-style.......2004-10-14

Just about every pre-schooler knows the story and song, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly;" here's a colorful aquatic version of that story, about an old lady who swallowed in rhymed sequence (among other things) a trout, a salmon, an otter, a porpoise ("she did it on purpose, she swallowed a porpoise!"), a whale, and at last the whole ocean.

Kids will love this twist on their traditional favorite; they'll love the vibrant and exuberantly colored illustrations even more. (You've really got to use the "look inside the book" feature above to get a sense of how wonderfully this book is designed.)

In contrast to the original old lady, who swallowed a horse and then quickly died (!), our intrepid trout-swallower eventually lets her menagerie back out to swim another day. A happy book with a happy ending; highly recommended.

I am a Nursery School Teacher's Aid, and I pick out the books and
read the my classes- I work with three year olds- We LOVE this book, we loved I knew an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly- but this one is equally as good.

I can't wait to read the Old lady who Swallowed a Pie!

Enjoy-

5 out of 5 stars there was an old lady who swallowed a trout!.......2002-03-03

What a fun book!! My preschoolers love it. The illustrations are both colorful and beautiful and certainly depict the Pacific Northwest. It's such a great participation book, all the children love to join in and never tire of it.

4 out of 5 stars The Pacific Northwest does wonders for this old rhyme!.......2000-06-29

I'm not a big fan of the song/rhyme "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly", but I do like this quirky book. The old woman is now an old lady, and she no longer swallows flies, cats, and dogs. Instead, she swallows, trout, salmon, otters, and other animals indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. She no longer dies, either--although she does become dangerously large after swallowing the ocean. This book is a lot of fun. The change of venue does wonders for the old rhyme, and Reynold Ruffins' colorful, folk-artsy illustrations are a pleasure. Sure, it's a cross-cultural gimmick, but it works. My two-year-old and I love singing this book together.

    Book Description

The region centered around Yellowstone National Park holds our country's best inland salmonid waters--the Bighorn, Big Hole, Big Lost, Bitterroot, Gallatin, Green, Henry's Fork, Madison, Missouri, Snake and Yellowstone have sources here. Beyond this is an unmatched variety of stillwaters that complement this treasure of flowing water. No other region in our country can boast of such an array of quality salmonid waters, allowing this area to be known as "Trout Country."

From this land of quality water abundance comes a fly-fishing heritage that produces master fly tiers in numbers much out of proportion to the area's human population. The products of these masters began a hundred years ago and continues today. This book provides the most complete assemblage yet of flies produced during the twentieth century from Trout Country fly-tying masters.

Most trout fishers plan to or dream about visiting Trout Country waters. For those that do, Trout Country Flies: Discusses the most popular twentieth-century fly patterns conceived there and where they are used; Revels many effective fly patterns coming from the region that are not yet known to the fly-fishing public; Identifies major fly-tying art contributors in the region; Reveals, in many cases for the first time, the identity of regional fly-tying masters; Provides vital information for fly-fishing success in the region; Profiles the realization that a visit to Trout Country waters will be a major fly-fishing experience; Provides a view of fly patterns that can prove effective on waters in your area; Reinforces appreciation for the results that an abundance of quality salmonid waters produces.

Trout Country Flies is the most detailed assemblage of greater Yellowstone area fly tiers and their products combined with "where-to-go" and historical information. All fly fishers can benefit from and will appreciate the information contained within.

"Country gardens" are popular these days. They are distinguished not so much by their location or size as by their abundance, informality, and profusion of color. Country Garden Planner shows 19 beautiful incarnations of the country garden--water gardens, scented gardens, shade gardens, dried-flower gardens--with photographs, plant suggestions, and a roughed-in plan for each. There's also a chapter on creating your own country garden, with advice on attracting birds and butterflies, container gardening, and using structures in the garden. The plant suggestions are satisfyingly old-fashioned, and include color, size, and zone information. Country Garden Planner isn't an in-depth planning guide, but the pictures and text are pleasantly harmonious, providing gentle inspiration to would-be bucolic green thumbs.

As a new garderner, I think this book is great grouping flowers together and giving a brief description of the flower/plant. The pictures of what a healthy blooming flower looks like is ideal and I haven't seen such a nice "picture" book like this before. This book would be best used as a reference tool for new gardeners or for those who already know all about gardening but really want to use it as a planning guide. I don't think it would be as useful for someone who wants to see indepth descriptions of the plants.

    5 out of 5 stars Potager Planning!.......2000-03-24

The concept of a potager, or kitchen garden appeals to me greatly. I very much want my garden to be ornamental as well as edible. Somewhat similar to the idea of "edible landscaping", potagers often intermingle vegetables, herbs, and flowers, sometimes planting them in geometric shapes. Sort of a more formal, yet informal garden. Colorful. Interesting. Not your garden-variety garden. I've been looking for online articles and for books on potagers, which seem to be popular in England, but hard to find in the United States. I haven't been able to find much information on them.

Country Home's Kitchen Garden Planner by Darrell Trout is just what I was looking for. It takes the reader through mini-tours of thirteen different American potagers, with text, photographs, and a plan (illustrated map) for each garden. A few of the individual plant varieties are somewhat unusual, but they described and keyed to commercial sources. The one defect that I found was that a couple of the sources seem to be omitted from the index, or perhaps there was a typo, a minor flaw in an otherwise exciting book. The last chapter talks about basic gardening in general. I only wish there was more on potagers in the Midwest where I live. Then again, where I live, there is wheat as far as the eye can see and not much else.

I really like this book. I wanted ideas for designing a potager and this book has given me lots of ideas. It is strong on the visuals, which I wanted, but also has informative text. Plus, I can just copy or modify one of the garden designs in the book to suit my needs, personal preferences, and growing zone until my own style evolves.

1 out of 5 stars The Bright Country:A Fisherman's Return to Trout,Wild Water and Homself.......2007-01-03

Mr. Middleton is in a much darker period of his writing and life at the time of his writing this book and though he still writes well, the tone takes on a darker shade than The Earth is Enough or On the Spine of Time which are cherished pieces in my collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Small World.......2001-06-26

THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

    5 out of 5 stars A Bright Ending.......2001-04-24

I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

Flyfishing in scenic and remote mountain waters is a special kind of fishing, explored in depth by veteran fly fisher John Gierach. Along with Fly Fishing Small Streams (0811722902), this guide, Gierach's first book, now in print with Stackpole Books, explains how to find the best waters and how to fish them to the best advantage.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Flyfishing the high country.......2001-09-26

As far as a comparison with Geirach's other books, this book and Flyfishing Small Stream are unlike the other books written by John Geirach. The others, such as Trout Bum, Dances With Trout and the rest, are collections of interesting, insightful and sometimes humurous essays on various flyfishing topics. These would be enjoyed by flyfishermen and women as well as those who do not fish at all.

However,Flyfishing Small Stream and Flyfishing the High Country are relatively more technical, "how to" types of books geared more towards those with a pre-existing knowledge of flyfishing. Also, if you do not live near the Rockies or plan on going there soon, High Country would have limited relevance to you. Having said that, I love John Geirach's work, I have read all of his essay compilation books and I just enjoyed those more than what I call the "how to" books.

"I want to dazzle the viewer," declares Jane Sassaman, "to snap them out of a mundane routine, and remind them that they are a part of a bigger 'cosmic picture.'" Drawing on the soul-satisfying power of nature, she creates gorgeous quilt art filled with sinuous organic forms splashed with vivid color, often grounded dramatically against black. And dazzle she does, not merely through the multitude of exquisite quilts showcased here, but also through her discussions of what inspires her and through exercises that demonstrate what others can do to find and maintain inspiration at home and in the garden, from establishing a creative workspace to understanding various elements of design, even learning new ways of seeing. Quilters aren't the only ones who can benefit from Sassaman's wisdom; artists in other mediums can learn much from her, too. --Amy Handy

I placed this order in October, and I have not received it as of January 11th.

          Check back later perhaps.

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready to create? I am!.......2003-09-29

Wow! I had read an article in American Patchwork Magazine about Jane Sassaman and decided to check out her book. After reading the great reviews on line at Amazon I decided that I needed to buy this book! After anxiously waiting for the book, I jumped into it and read it the first day I received it! What a whirlwind of color, creativity, design, arrangement, and textiles!

If you're looking for a book to use patterns designed by the author or if you lack creativity or imagination then this book is NOT for you! On the other hand if you're looking for a book that will set you're mind free of many of the constaints that other quilting books offer than this book is definitely for you! This book shows the growth and development of Sassaman as an artist and quilter. Her path to the beautiful quilt designs she's discovered has taken her 20 years. With the insights in this book and a little practice you can be designing quilts similar in intensity. With this book, Sassaman shares with us her techniques for applique and her ability to step outside of the 'traditional quilt design box' and to make your own rules! Sassaman is a fearless quilter!

I cannot wait to start making a quilt with the creative guidance found in this book!

4 out of 5 stars Inspirations for applique.......2002-12-12

This book is more of a quilter's history, detailing how Jane Sassaman gradually evolved her style of quilting. Her work is amazing and I love looking at the detailed pictures of her quilts. The book contains "workshops" on a couple of her techniques, but no patterns for specific projects. Also, her quilts are "art quilts" as opposed to quilts for bed use, and so some of her techniques are a bit unconventional (i.e. fabrics used). This was a fun read, but requires you to create your own quilt designs, rather than making a replica of Jane's quilts.

5 out of 5 stars Her designs and attitude will stretch your imagination.......2002-01-13

I bought this book fully aware that Jane's graphic style is completely different from my tendency to favor realistic applique or gentle color washes. I wanted to expand my vision, and this incredible book is everything I hoped for. Unlike some quilt books that focus on a technique and others that focus on the development of a quilt artist over time, this book tackles both.
Jane shares her background, introduction to quilting as an artistic medium, her struggles along the way, and the progression of her style, presented both in words and in pictures of her quilts over the years.
The last 40% of the book shows you how find your inpirational material, say a dandelion leaf or iris flower, and work with it to identify its signature characteristics.
Using two quilts, Jane shows her two approaches, providing plenty of detail. I'm working with the image of a Christmas cactus (I bought this book during the holiday season). I can tell that it's going to take a while before I get the design to the point where it pleases me enough to start buying fabric and sewing, but it's an enjoyable challenge. I look forward to producing something completely different from anything I've ever done or thought of doing.
Even if someone never intended to make a quilt like Jane's, reading this book and studying the pictures is an incredible education. The intense power that leaps from her designs is a challenge to every artist to put more life into every work of art. This is a book I will read many times, marveling at what this woman has created.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended by the accidental quilter.......2001-12-15

Wow! Jane Sassaman is a fiber artist in the zone. The color plates of her quilts are both awesome and inspiring. Her designs are inspired from nature and from historical designs. I particularly like the way she has taken the tree of life design and gone wild with it in "Willow" and several smaller studies.
There are some practical chapters in this book which should inspire and help quilters that are intrigued by the art quilt, but are not sure how to get started. (How to gather ideas and keep a sketch book, how to simplify designs for fibre construction, stylizing, adding depth and interest.) There is also a section where she explores machine embroidery with the quilting process. I love machine embroidery and I'm always looking for artistic ways to blend it with my quilting.
If you are a serious artist, collect this book so you can see what Jane is doing. If you're currently working in the zone--you are going to see some of these visions there.
If you are a beginning or intermediate quilter and are willing to
read and look at this book from cover to cover--it may influence your work when you get to the point you need to use design and color in innovative ways. Definitely a quilter's quilter book, but worth every minute you spend between its covers.

5 out of 5 stars Red and green quilts so popular.......2006-12-14

Ricky Clark's involvement in the Ohio Quilt Research Project focused her attention on the popularity of the red and green floral quilt during the forty years from the 1840s through the 1870s. She wanted to know why the quilts were so similar when there were no commercial patterns, and why this specific color scheme prevailed for so long. Having documented 179 Ohio-made classic floral quilts, she categorizes the appliqué blocks into seven geometric styles. She investigates the social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds of the women who made these quilts, and how the patterns spread. The result is a book that holds the interest of the general reader while being based in sound academic research. Beautifully illustrated with many color photos of quilts and with period photographs of the quilt makers.

This book offers a thorough, comprehensive study of floral quilts from 1840-1870. It is full of meaningful information and photo examples for all who love floral quilts and especially for quilt history buffs, researchers and appraisers.

The three-dimensional flowers in this book are not like the flowers found on traditional Album Quilts. The flowers on the album quilts from the mid-19th century are "stylized," which means the designs represent typical patterns from tha ttime and not necessarily the way flowers actually look. This book will show you how to create flower-based album quilts in the same fine tradition of expert needle skill with imaginative use of high quality fabric and fibers. But rather than stylized flowers, you'll make 3-dimensional flowers that are so realistic and beautiful they stand apart. These techniques are different also because the make creating an Album Quilt faster. The ornate Album Quilts of the 1840's and 1850's were created in a time different from our lives today. A single block could take 40-60 hours of cutting and sewing. The patterns in this book are designed to save time. They will never be rotary cut, but they can be done with significant time savings, making the process more pleasurable. Each cut is made intentionally imperfect, like a flower in nature - an irregularity which brings reality.
