Useful for the bored or those interested in breeding.......2007-01-27
ÿIf you are just looking for a book about basic betta care, this book is not for you. Most of the book is about how to breed bettas. Myself, being interested in breeding bettas, found this book somewhat useful. Unfortunately there is not enough in-depth information about the breeding process and I had to refer to the internet on many occasions. The breeding information is useful, but if you want to really try to raise bettas read some other sources first. This book is an alright introduction to breeding. The only up side to this book are the color pictures, about one a page. The overview about "genetics" was rather confusing.
The author's first language was definitely not English. Most of the book is well written, but there are a few strange sentences here and there. A goodly portion of the book is stories the author had about breeding bettas. These stories were interesting, but not entirely useful.
I would not waste my time buying this book unless it was a last resort. If you can get it for free, it would be worth reading.
If you want to BREED bettas, ok.......2006-04-30
The title of this book is very misleading. There is actually very little information on how to care for bettas, and the entire focus of the book seems to be breeding. If you are looking for tips on how to breed bettas and how to create color combinations, this is a great book. However, I just wanted a betta care guide, and was very disappointed in this book.
Recommended for betta breeders and sellers.......2004-10-10
This book has some bits of information on basic betta care and it provides plenty of advice on the breeding of bettas (environmental conditions that encourage spawning and possible deviations that can occur during the spawning process) and the raising of the fry (first foods, water maintenance and jarring). It is recommended for those who are interested in the challenge of going into the mass production and sale of bettas for fun and for profit.
Very disappointing book.......2004-02-17
The inaccuracies in this book were too numerous to count. What's more, very little practical information is given on good fish husbandry; instead, the author seems to focus more on "bettas for profit."
At one point, Mr. Maurus remarks that bettas are short-lived, and as a result it is best "...not to get too attached." What kind of advice is this for serious pet owners?
Very poor, other than the pictures. Otherwise I would have rated it a 0.
better for breeders than those who just want pets........2004-01-02
The chapters are:
Introduction
What is a betta?
Keeping bettas
Spawning bettas
Raising the fry
Buying bettas
Raising bettas for fun and profit
So as you can see, it's mostly about breeding and selling betta fish. It would definetely be good if you're planning on doing that, but otherwise I wouldn't bother buying it. While it does have some helpful information (diagram of different parts and fins of the betta, information on housing, and foods) it would be much more helpful if there were a section on health (diseases and treating them) and diagrams of the different kinds of betta fish (since this is a book about breeding them!).
Book Description
Siamese cats have their own special needs. These needs are detailed in this invaluable manual for new or experienced owners. Here is information on selection, feeding, grooming and generally keeping a healthy and well-adjusted Siamese cat. Fifty striking, full-color photos and instructive line drawings reveal the beauty of this breed. One chapter is dedicated to understanding Siamese behavior.

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE SIAMESE CAT BOOK (GOD FORBID!).......2006-11-18
A MODERN KNOWLEDGIBLE CONCISE RESOURCE FOR HUMANS OWNED BY SIAMESE CATS. BEAUTIFULLY DONE PHOTOS MAKE LEARNING ABOUT YOUR CAT AN ESTHETIC EXPERIENCE.
THE "COVER CAT" IS A HIT, AS WE ARE OWNED BY A LILAC POINT MALE. FROM OUR EXPERIENCE, IT IS TRUE THAT THE LILACS ARE THE MOST QUIET AND AFFECTIONATE OF THE SIAMESE BREED.
Nice Book.......2006-11-05
The book 'Siamese Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)' is a good basic book on Siamese Cats. I was pleased with the quality of paperback edition and love the photo illustrations.
Good information!.......2005-12-13
Talked about different types of siamese the shape of their heads, colors. Also how their personalities are different from other types of cats. They are quite chatty. The book had some good information on Siamese and regular cat care.
Good General Cat Manuel.......2005-09-19
The material presented is well-presented for the average lay reader. It's a general over-view of Siamese cats, with a fairly extensive section on breeding.
I would have preferred for Collier's book to have dealt more with behavior and training. The two subjects receive some attention, just not enough.
Good starter book.......2005-07-08
This book is a good introduction to Siamese cats. My version is somewhat dated as it still recommends FIP and FeLV vaccinations. It also doesn't describe the risks of rabies vaccines. I've yet to find a really good reference book for comprehensive feline health information. Cats often exhibit much more subtle symptoms than dogs. I also would like to find better information on issues relative to purebreds. The Cornell Book of Cats is a good next book, but I'm still searching for an advanced layperson's book.

Learn to speak Thai fast!.......2007-04-14
First of all, many of the criticisms of this product apply only to this edition, they were fixed in the new (November 2005) edition, which Amazon also has. My review applies to the new (2nd) edition.
I am a college student who went to Thailand for 10 days on a service trip. I only studied Thai for two months before I left. For one month, I used whatever online resources I could find, and for the second month, I used Colloquial Thai. I got up to about Chapter 12. I studied for a few (maybe 3) hours every day, and each chapter took me 2 or 3 days to get through. When I got to Thailand, I was able to say most things I wanted to say and I could understand a lot if they spoke slowly and simply. When the translators weren't around, I could chat with the villagers, order meals, satisfy my curiousity ("khun roojak the Beatles mai khrap?" - Do you know the Beatles?), and so on. I even made two speeches in Thai, on the spot, as a representative for my group. So, I am very grateful to this book.
Here are the pros and cons:
The transliteration system is easy to read, and the symbols marking tones are easy to get used to. The most annoying part is that they transliterate the sound we would call "g" as "k", and "k" as "kh." This is common in Thai transliteration systems, because the Thai "gaw gai" is slightly different than our "g", but it's a lot closer than our "k." Also, the way they transliterate Thai vowels makes sense, especially compared to Benjawan Poomsan Becker's system.
The goal of this book is to teach colloquial Thai, not written Thai. At the end of every chapter they teach you how to read and write some of the vocab from the chapter, but it's really not the focus of the book. You will be able to read signs (like "sukhaa") but you probably won't be able to write notes.
The vocab in each chapter is very useful. Every time I started a new chapter, I thought, "Ah, now they teach you the important stuff" -- but that's because they teach you lots of important stuff, and relatively little useless stuff.
The CDs are extremely valuable. Not only do they have all the sample conversations, but they have listening & speaking exercises. For example, they will play a conversation for you that's not in the book, then ask you questions about it, then tell you the answers. Or you will role-play the part in a conversation, "I'll give you the cues in English," says our friend John Moore.
The book itself contains a lot of useful exercises. It will ask you to talk about certain things, and then you can check to see if you spoke correctly in the back of the book.
Here's a complaint: all the conversations are between two adults of near-equal social status. When I went to Thailand, I was often speaking to children, who will call you "phee" (older brother/sister) and whom you should address as "nawng" (little brother/sister). I was very confused at first as to who this "phee" was, and they must have thought it funny that I called them "khun." Also, I tried to talk to a monk once and he sort of just ignored me, because I didn't realize that you have to address monks differently than ordinary people. So I never got to talk with the monks :(.
Anyways, this program is excellent, and if you want to learn Thai, get it.
Great comprehensive way of learning Thai!.......2006-06-11
I am part Thai and so am very committed to learning the language. I have tried several courses and taken lessons, but this book & the accompanying cds have been the greatest resource I have found. It integrates writing along with speaking and grammar so that you learn how to correctly pronounce the words, as well as write them. For those that complain of it not containing tonal information or of it spelling the words differently than others - EVERY thai book and dictionary will spell the words differently. What makes this book fantastic is that it gives you the thai letters which is the key to pronouncing the word correctly. If you can pronounce the letter in thai (which they teach you in the beginning) then you can use that thai letter as your key to pronouncing the words as you go through the course. I got very confused trying to sort through the different spellings in other resources, but I finally am getting the hang of pronouncing everything now that I know the thai letters and can relate them to the romanized spellings.
No tonal notations - worthless book.......2006-04-03
The book only has very few tonal notations, a with there being five tones for the same word; they are extreamly important. I have ordered numerous Thai books - and this one is quite expensive and one of the worst. And since it comes with "free CD's" - one opened, you can't return. Too bad I would have.
Thai language book and 2 tapes.......2001-02-01
The Moore and Rodchue COLLOQUIAL THAI and the accompanying 2 cassette tapes from Routledge are not all they are cracked up to be. Main gripe...one can not use the tapes without having the book in hand at the same time...so no use of tapes in the automobile. Also, neither the tapes nor the book are clear about where in the book the tape is referencing and vice versa. Also, no repetition on the tapes and u know how difficult it is to rewind a tape an inch to repeat a word or phrase. If a person learns Thai from this book/tape set, they really should go into the language business because the set presents very difficult usage challenges and is not educationally sound...that comes from a 30 year educator...me. Get a computer CD ROM set instead or get a native Thai to speak to your own cassette this way...1.Thai word three times, 2.English word twice, and again the same Thai word three times...then go to the next word. Sad product as it stands...
Buying the book with the CD is essential.......2000-12-30
I recently joined a company that has allowed me the luxury to travel and work in Thailand from time to time. I have observed that there are several errors throughout the book, but generally it is very well written by its British and Thai authors. The book has an easy layout, and each chapter builds upon the next. I would strongly advise that the CD, (or the cassette), is purchased with the book, because it's impossible to duplicate the tones of Thai language from the text alone. As an ex-schoolteacher I appreciated what the authors were trying to acheive with this language course; learning the language in a systematic 'learning-by-doing' method. However, it's definitely not the type of book to carry around with you as a tourist in Thailand, so I would suggest the excellent Lonely Planet's Thai phrasebook for that. Book Description
Hybrid instruments - essentially bonds with an equity component - are found in a multitude of guises. This generic heading encompasses a seemingly endless array of finance instruments, including convertible bonds, mandatory convertibles, reverse convertibles, preferred shares, ELKS, DECS and LYONs, Within each one of these instruments are found a wide range of variations and features. These include reset, negative pledge, screw and forced conversion clauses, as well as step up coupons, call schedules, call options with soft and hard protection, etc,
The range of possibilities can seem bewildering, but it is this very flexibility which proves a huge attraction for investors, issuers and financial institutions. On the sell side companies issue these securities and corporate service departments advise on the type of options to include in them. On the buy side, investment managers seek to build portfolios with limited risk exposure using these securities and hedge funds utilize arbitrage opportunities between the convertible bond and the common share.
The opportunities are endless but the seemingly labyrinthine complexities can prove daunting. The Handbook of Hybrid Instruments helps steer a clear path through the maze. Izzy Nelken has drawn together a team of experts to provide in-depth analysis of many o key issues that both sellers and buyers require in order to operate effectively and profitably.
A general introduction is followed by specific information on key clauses and variations, valuation methods, the impact on a firm's value following the public issuance of convertibles, details on when an issuer should call a convertible and the impact of these provisions on the price, the difficult requirement of input data to make sense of the models, indexes and reset convertibles. Finally, a highly useful glossary is provided of all the key terms used in this field.
An analytical CD is also provided with the book, containing sample software of ConvB++. This combines complex state of the art models with a simple, user-friendly interface to assess fair values prices and to hedge parameters of hybrid instruments.
The Handbook of Hybrid Instruments is an indispensable explanatory and analytical tool for all professionals looking for the latest thinking on convertibles from some of the world's leading experts

Don't Buy This Book! Unless reading the obvious is needed........2002-02-28
This book is completely useless. From the view of a quant, the author merely states the highlights/features of various structured derivative products as described in the prospectus. This information is readily available on FreeEdgar. No insights are offered what so ever. His typical description of the valuation method consists of "Merrill has developed a model similar to ours[the author's]... The model takes into account volatility, interest rate, ..." And that's it.
On the topic of whether the issuer should early call, Mr. Nelken's "conclusions" range from calling when the market price is below call price, to at call price, to above call price, and finally to way above call price. This is done through summarizations of other researchers' reports. Again, no opinions or analysis; merely book reports.
And finally, the not-advertised-as-demo CD-ROM is as useful as a coaster on a camping trip. There's no user guide for operating instructions. Not that it is necessary since most functions are disabled in the demo. But there are links to files I don't have.

You Don't Have to Be a '57 Chevy Owner to Love this Book.......2002-03-12
Anyone interested in restoring automobiles will enjoy and learn from this book. Also, the price is more than reasonable. It's a hardback!
The book provides a detailed account of the search for and restoration of a '57 Chevy convertible. It is not just technical info, it's also fun reading about the trials and tribulations of the team that restored this classic. You really get to know what it's like to "live" a project like this.
There are hundreds of photos and references to shops and services that can help with your own restoration project. I'm planning on buying some of Cars and Parts other books also. I hope they can be half a good as "Peggy Sue".

Second-Hand Book-Bin Candidate Extraordinaire.......2002-06-26
Here is an investment volume screaming for a reason to exist. Since there are now at least a couple of near up-to-the-moment resources on convertible securities information, anyone who picks up a book like this is likely to be looking for some insights or practical advice on how to buy and handle these increasingly complex instruments. If that's what the reader is looking for, s/he won't find it here. So what does one find?
Over the past 2 years I've rummaged through several Noddings books, his work from the 1970s to this present volume, and they're all cliffhangers. That is, Noddings promises to guide you somewhere, and indeed he guides you to the top of a cliff --where he leaves you hanging. Interestingly, the best observations he currently offers concern warrant hedging, which is getting increasingly difficult to do successfully. Thus what's the point of the observations, here? Most of the rest of the book is a bit like looking at an owner's manual for something you don't own, with lots of diagrams and no supporting text/instructions.
Although this is an investment volume screaming for a reason to exist, there is a screaming need for good how-to literature on convertibles and convertible hedging. Noddings should have filled this need decades ago (when he started writing prolifically about this stuff), and might have kept a worthy and useful corner niche to readers hungry to understand this market. Instead, Noddings has a much larger and expanding corner of the second-hand book bin, which is exactly where this volume will go once you've spent about 20 minutes with it.
Not great........2002-06-17
A large proportion of this book is devoted to tables of data that by the time you get round to reading will be well out of date. ...Furthermore, as a relative newcomer to convertibles, I frankly I can't see who would find this book useful. For beginners, it skimps over the details leaving you with the feeling you haven't learned very much and the pages and pages of numbers leave you feeling angry that you've wasted your money. As for the experts, anyone who's actually in the business would know all this stuff already, and would know enough to fill in the gaps (and there are a lot of gaps). Which begs the question: why and for whom was this book written ?!

Illuminating SAAB mechanics.......2007-03-18
I bought this manual because I expected it to be an improvement over my other manuals - and it certainly was. This is probably the most complete SAAB service manual in existance without acquiring the actual SAAB service manual(s) themselves.
NOT MUCH HELP SO FAR..........2006-12-30
I recently bought a 1985 Saab 900S and this service manual was given to me with the car. I new the car had a bad starter when I purchased the car, but I figured that it wouldn't be much of a problem. I have replaced many starters on many different vehicles...so no big deal right?...WRONG! I looked for the starter under the front part of the engine, but I couldn't find it. I then looked in the manual, which did not have even 1 picture or diagram of the starter anywhere! Not only that, there was absolutely no mention of its loacation anywhere in the manual or how to remove and replace it. I had to trace out the positive lead from the battery to find it! It then took me approximately 5 hours, just to figure out how to remove the starter and remove it. I had to remove many hoses and assemblies, just to get into position to remove the starter, and even then it was extremely difficult! Yet, there is NOTHING in the manual to guide you through this, not even a lousy picture or diagram. I guess that they must have assumed that its all routine for the novice mechanic. Either that..., or an oversite on their part!? I called several 'saab mechanics', and the 'saab dealership' as well. They all considered this a major job! One mechanic even declined to take on the job! The dealer wanted $975.00 to do the job and also told me that I would be without my car for several days! Lucky for me, I was able to get it done myself somehow.
The next thing to do was to replace any worn or suspicious looking bushings, hoses and belts. I figured that it would be better to do this now, rather then wait for another problem!? This was reinforced in me one evening while driving home. I was almost home when a worn bushing exploded when I downshifted and hit the gas. The location of this bushing affected not just the carberation, but also the power steering! The car wouldn't idle and was extremely difficult to steer, but I made it home. After this, I decided to replace all suspicious looking bushings, hoses and belts. I did this with little trouble on my own, never referring to the manual until I got to the belts. I referred to the manual for the second time for this repair, after being NO help to me with the starter motor! The manual does did have picture this time, but not so fast. There are 4 belts to be changed. There are 2 alternator/waterpump belts, 1 power steering belt and 1 ac compressor belt. The manual tells you to refer to figure # for the ac compressor belt pulley..which is nowhere to be found! There is no figure or illustration for this particular belt! The manual did have diagrams for the other two belt repairs...but not this one! Even though they refer to a diagram that isn't even there! Another oversite I guess...
I have since been able to replace all 4 shocks, replace all 4 rotors and break pads all around and tune up the car (distributor, rotor and plugs), without referring to the manual! I did call upon it twice and was disappointed both times...especially the first! I have owned the car for about 4 months now and came to Amazon.com to find a more complete and user friendly manual. If there isn't one out there...'do it yourselfer's' like myself with equal or lesser automotive knowledge, will find themselves in a pickle.
