Not detailed enough.......2005-05-31
I've had this book through 4 cats and kittens, and if you have a really healthy cat who never develops any illnesses, it's great. I find myself using the Cornell Feline Health Center online for my cats.
The diagnostic tree is just too vague, the descriptions of diseases are also too vague and there's just not enough information. Using a vet's resource center with a dictionary handy does you--and your cat--more good, especially if your cat has something really serious.
Not helpful enough.......2003-07-05
This book has a very serious omission on the subject of outdoor cats. The book does not mention at all that outdoor cats are in grave danger of attack by coyotes in many parts of the country. Coyotes are in places where many people wouldn't even expect them, such as in cities. There are precautions you can take to eliminate this danger or greatly reduce the chance of an attack. Unfortunately, this book does not list the precautions that should be taken. And by the way, bobcats will also be happy to kill a house cat and similar precautions would apply.
The only Cat Book I Have.......2000-06-08
This is a wonderful book. My wife and I have 7 cats and we received this as a gift from my in-laws. This is the only cat book we own and we look at it all the time. The book has great pictures of various cats acting out various behaviors, what a kitten should look like at a certain age, and even different parasites that a cat may get. Also included is a list of emergency situations and ways you can help your cat if he/she is injured. This is a great book no cat owner should be without.

I find this book highly informative and well organized. I have 5 cats and own many cat books, but this one is by far the most referenced. I especially like the health reference section since I have not found this in any other books.
You don't need this one........2000-01-11
I expected more, and better, from the ASPCA. This book is so basic, much too elementary for anyone who already owns a cat. Really. In two years I've learned more from my cats than this book could tell me. The information level is cursory, and in some cases, spotty. It was published in 1992, so there's NOTHING here about breakthrough medications for flea and heartworm prophylaxis. The only good thing to say about this book is that the photographs are beautiful. Wish I could send it back and buy something more informative.

The book 'Siamese Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)' is a good basic book on Siamese Cats. I was pleased with the quality of paperback edition and love the photo illustrations.

Talked about different types of siamese the shape of their heads, colors. Also how their personalities are different from other types of cats. They are quite chatty. The book had some good information on Siamese and regular cat care.
Good General Cat Manuel.......2005-09-19
The material presented is well-presented for the average lay reader. It's a general over-view of Siamese cats, with a fairly extensive section on breeding.
I would have preferred for Collier's book to have dealt more with behavior and training. The two subjects receive some attention, just not enough.
Good starter book.......2005-07-08
This book is a good introduction to Siamese cats. My version is somewhat dated as it still recommends FIP and FeLV vaccinations. It also doesn't describe the risks of rabies vaccines. I've yet to find a really good reference book for comprehensive feline health information. Cats often exhibit much more subtle symptoms than dogs. I also would like to find better information on issues relative to purebreds. The Cornell Book of Cats is a good next book, but I'm still searching for an advanced layperson's book.

Average Bengal Book.......2006-01-17
The book has some good pictures and some good information, but some is contradictory. For example, if you buy premium cat food your paying for advertising, etc., but the next sentence reads that when buying cat food, you get what you pay for. Confusing. Otherwise the book tells the positives of owning a Bengal, not the drawbacks.

I found this book to be full of basic cat information and less Bengal specific information than I would have liked. It did help to describe the breed standards on a basic level. If you are looking for a quality Bengal and want all the details, more research is absolutely necessary.

This is a very informative book on the Bengal cat breed. Many wonderful photos too. Very helpful to a new Bengal owner -- highly recommended.

I enjoyed the book but was a little disappointed as I expected it to be much more detailed. I thought it was more of a beginners book to cats. A great book if you have never had a cat or done any research on bengal cats.

This guide acquaints the reader with the care of cats from kittenhood to adult cat. It is easy to read and easy to find pertinent information when needed. It is highly recommended.
Very Good........2005-04-10
Not only does this book tell you how to take care of your cat, it is also very interesting to read. Unlike some books, it doesn't have pages of very short descriptions of cat breeds. I find these very boring, as they tend to say the same things from book to book. These have no relevance to actually taking care of your cat. This book has enlightened me on several things about taking care of my cat. Much to my cat's distaste, I no longer feed her mass market pet food, but follow the simple directions found in the book. I also moved my ageing cat indoors, where she seems much less stressed. This book is good as a informative read about cats, and a reference book.
Pregnant Cats and Young Kittens Not Covered.......2004-04-14
This book does not cover the week by week development of kittens in terms of dietary needs and social and motor control. If you are adopting a young kitten from a private home, this is not the book for you. If you want to breed cats, look for another book.
The index is also undernourished. It is missing the words diet, food, feeding, nursing and weaning. The book does a good job, however, on the politically correct attitude to have toward a cat.
Best Cat Care Book Ever!.......2003-07-27
This book tells how to keep your cat healthy, happy, and safe. It also takes animal welfare seriously, telling how you can get involved in helping cats! I highly reccomend it to every cat owner in America!

No-nonsense guide with some omissions.......2002-01-22
Two practicing veterinarians wrote "The Complete Cat Health Manual," and typically it is the guide I turn to after one of our cats has been diagnosed by our vet. Once I know the name of a disease or condition, this book will give me a good summary of the `how and why,' and an indication as to treatment. Each condition, e.g. `Trauma to the Cornea', is described by subsections labeled: "What are the Symptoms?;" "What are the Risks?;" and "What is the Treatment?"
The manual itself is organized into chapters, each of which describes a different part of the feline anatomy and what can go wrong with it. Parasites and infectious feline diseases get their own separate chapters.
The book's black and white drawings are excellent. I had no idea a cat's kneecaps were located on its hind legs, until I looked at the drawing in Chapter 8, "Bones, Joints, Muscles, Ligaments and Tendons (The Musculoskeletal System)." The drawings of parasitic life cycles are also very clear and interesting.
There are also several short appendices on subjects such as "Normal Physiological Data for the Feline."
Maybe I look up words differently than everyone else who speaks English, but it leads me to mention omissions in both the Glossary and the Index. For instance, one of my cats developed a limp and I tried to look up `tendon' and `limping' which were in neither section. I later discovered `tendon' in the index under `Musculoskeletal system'---not the first word that came to mind when I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my cat.
Which leads me to `limping.' I recommend that another brief chapter (even a table) be included in this manual's next edition: a summary of symptoms and what illness or cause could be indicated by the symptom. "The Cornell Book of Cats" has a good chapter on "Clinical Signs of Disease" that includes just such a table (okay, so it didn't have `limping' either, but it did contain `lameness'. And its index included `tendons' and `lameness.')
Use "The Cornell Book of Cats" for possible diagnoses before you take your cat to the vet. Read "The Complete Cat Health Manual" for a clear description of your cat's problem, after you come home from the clinic.
Note also that the Cornell book is more detailed as to treatment in the case of relatively rare diseases. For instance, this manual specifies that there is no treatment for idiopathic hepatic lipidosis (IHL), but the Cornell book states that up to sixty percent of cats suffering from IHL can be saved with the application of nutritional fluids through a stomach tube.

Good book for first time Birman owners not breeders.......1998-06-30
This book is a good book covering the Basics of Birmans but begins to fall short when talking about breeding and the genetics of Birman cats. I love the care/feeding and general information of the book. A true book about breeding however should include pedigrees, history and foundation cats, and include medical information as well. My wife and I have bred Birmans for 11 years and as such have to consider genetic questions whenever we talk about breeding/aquiring another birman. The book also should include online information available for Birmans which is extensive.

This book gave good general info on cats, but not much, in particular, for Manx's. I was looking for details on their elimination problems due to lack of tail, and how to deal with it as far as special diets, etc. But, the possibility of elimination problems weren't even addressed in this book.

Karen Commings has thoroughly researched and compiled an excellent "owner's manual" for the first-time Manx owner. Through contacting breeders and asking health, behaviour, and care questions, she has prepared a book which any Manx breeder (of which I am one) is confident to give to a new kitten purchaser and feel good about it. Despite an unfortunate photo mixup with one picture, Karen's book contains accurate and dependable information about the breed. Anyone considering buying a Manx or who has already purchased one will find the book informative and fun (did I mention, it's also a good read!).
Wonderful, accurate (for a change) writing........1999-09-27
I have bred and shown Manx cats for the past 11 years and this is the only book that I know of that is completely factual about the breed. There is a lot of printed matter on the breed which is either misleading or downright wrong. This book gives a new owner or prospective owner a good idea of what to expect from a Manx cat. The pictures are not up to the standard of the writing (one picture is of a Japenese Bobtail), but that certainly doesn't ruin the book. It is not so expensive that it is prohibitive as a research source while being attractive enough to add to your library of cat books. I think it is a book that all Manx owners could benefit from owning and I recommend it to anyone who adopts one of my kittens/cats.
