    Book Description

Wabi was born an owl—a great horned owl who grew to become such a strong, confident creature that he was afraid of nothing. But now he is afraid. He fears that he might never win the heart of the girl he loves. Somehow, despite his own intentions, he has fallen in love with a girl— a beautiful, headstrong human girl. And so he begins the adventure of his life. He shape-shifts into human form in order to be with her. But before he can win her love, he must face an even greater challenge in a land he comes to think of as the Valley of Monsters.

Exhilarating, unique, and told in an engagingly wry narrative voice, this is a fantasy that weaves together classic elements of folklore, romance, and most of all, adventure.

    Boy! What a great book!

My reviews tend to be long lengthy affairs utilizing words like "the text" and "metaphor" and who knows what all. Now I just finished "Wabi" by Joseph Bruchac and I'm battling a near overwhelming temptation to leave my first sentence right at that. I mean, what more is there to say? This is a fantastic work of fiction with enough excitement, romance, magic, adventure, and feats of strength to wow even the most reluctant of readers. You like animal stories? How about books with monsters in them? Do you like books with Native American culture woven in? How about a story of one boy trying to find his place in the world? Doggone it, this book has EVERYTHING you could possibly want in a piece of fiction. I feel like the grandfather at the beginning of "A Princess Bride" trying to convince his grandson that he holds in his hands a truly great story. Joseph Bruchac has put together a book that has a little bit of something for everyone. The result is one of the strongest titles of the year.

He was born a rather small and runty owl. As a chick, Wabi wasn't particularly strong, but he was clever and curious, and those traits held him in good stead. After being unceremoniously kicked out his nest by his older bully of a brother, Wabi meets up with his great-grandmother who immediately teaches him everything he needs to know. Together the two take care of a small village of people that live not far from the owls' home. All kinds of nasty monsters and aberrations of nature threaten the peaceful villagers and Wabi protects them as best he can. Slowly, however, he falls in love with a girl in the village. Her name is Dojihla and she's a strong, headstrong, single-minded type. So it is that great-grandmother lets Wabi in on a secret. If he wants to, he can change into a human being and attempt to win Dojihla's hand in marriage. Things do not go entirely as Wabi might have expected, however, and now he must fight numerous monsters, locate a missing wolf pack, and rescue the villagers once more if he is ever to reach the end of his own personal journey.

First off, it's nice to have a narrator you really like right from the beginning of the book. Wabi has a sense of humor and sense of self that just feel true. He seems like a real person (slash owl) from start to finish and you're rooting for him the entire way. The sense of humor I mentioned is important too. There are plenty of adventure novels out there that take their quests so seriously you'd think the whole affair would fall apart if anything halfway amusing happened in it. Bruchac, on the other hand, isn't afraid to have Wabi refer to his brother as an ornicidal maniac one moment and then dryly describe the fact that while it wasn't necessary to deliver three additional bone-crushing bones to a particularly nasty dead beastie, "... it made us feel better."

I don't know if you'd characterize this as a book that always keeps you guessing, but it certainly keeps you reading from start to finish. Basically this is a Native American superhero tale. Wabi begins life small, rises to great heights (literally... HA HA), finds the woman he loves, protects her people with his amazing abilities, has his secret identity revealed (did I mention his feathered ears before?), and triumphs in the end. The book even reminded me of some of the more classic tales in literature. At one point Wabi is in human form with his grandfather's bow and he challenges a fellow to string it. The guy, of course cannot, and then Wabi does so with ease. Doesn't that sound just a touch like a story of Odysseus? Small moments that knowingly or unknowingly refer to other myths in history and literature give the book a nice zing of recognition once in a while.

Here's what it all comes down to, though. I can praise the writing and the storytelling and the fun of the book, but as I see it this is one of the very few books that kids of all ages, genders, etc. will enjoy equally. How many children's books, really good really well-written children's books, can you say that for in 2006? It has some mild similarities to "Owl In Love", by Patrice Kindl of course, but this is an entirely different critter. I'm a Wabi fan through and through, and I don't think I'm the only one. A sleeper hit of the year, if I don't miss my guess.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2006-09-23

This is a terrific, fun book with a compelling narrative voice and lots of cool monsters. I laughed out loud several times at Wabi's adventures, and cried twice. My kids and I read parts of it out loud last night, then I finished it, and the 11-year-old is up in her room this morning, reading it.

I've read a lot of YA fantasy this year, and this is the best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars The great horned owl.......2005-08-15

Of all of the books in the Wild Bird Series, this is by far my favorite; the great-horned owl is a majestic and fascinating creature, and this book, as with all of the books in the series, does an excellent job in documenting in words and pictures its lifecycle. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it (for the pictures alone!) to anyone with an interest in owls, or birds in general.

    Book Description

From the Author (Robbyn van Frankenhuyzen): "For twenty years we have rehabilitated a wide variety of wild critters, from fawns, foxes, skunks, and crows to opposums, raccoons, rabbits, and owls. Some of the animals were injured adults, others were orphaned babies, but all of them were in need of a little help to get them back into the wild.

Growing up on a farm, as well as my training as an animal technician, prepared me for many of the medical situations that arose. Gijsbert took every opportunity to sketch, paint, and photograph our temporary guests during their stay on the farm. More importantly, Gijsbert was issued all the Federal and State permits needed to care for birds of prey. Without these permits, we would never have been able to care for hawks and owls. For good reason, caring for these birds is very tightly regulated and closely monitored. Taking an owl from its nest is dangerous and illegal.

We have cared for many Great Horned Owls but none of them were like Jackson, the owl in this story. His personality was unique from the very beginning and we know that we were lucky to have shared such a close bond with this wild bird. This is the true story of his life with us. Enjoy."

With illustrations from Gjisbert (Nick) van Frankenhuyzen, noted wildlife artist and illustrator of our Legends series as well as The Blue Spruce by Mario Cuomo and L is for Lincoln: An Illinois Alphabet.

You don't know me, so you probably haven't sat around with me and heard me explain (usually ad nauseum) my feelings about Melodrama being a legitimate and possibly superior alternative to the two traditional forms of storytelling: Tragedy and Comedy. I won't go into the theory and application here, but to boil it down, I feel that all art must have the ability to make people FEEL (something inherent in Melodrama but not always necessary for the two others). I say all this to give a you a sense of what a high compliment it is for me to say that Adopted by an Owl made me feel (though I wouldn't call it Melodrama).

If I was the kind of guy who used the word "Kudos" (Thank the Most High that I am not), I would say: "Kudos" to Robbyn for the clarity of her prose and the wonderful honesty of her storytelling. One experiences and understands all of Gijsbert's varied feelings toward Jackson's tentative return to the wild. Kids and parents alike will find this story worthwhile (though I had to pause for a moment in reading it aloud to my kids--because I got choked up).

The illustrations are wonderful (though very similar in palette to The Legend of Leelanau). Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen is fast becoming one of my favorite illustrators.

Adopted By An Owl is a truly enduring tale. It tells of the Van Frankehuyzen family's rehabilitation of a Great Horned Owl and of the Owl, named Jackson, taking to the family as if he were the family dog! It is just amazing to read about the Jackson's interactions with the family, his healing process, and his overall protectiveness of them. Most people see these critters as frightening but you see how amazingly enough, Jackson was able to be both a free wild bird and yet an integral part of the family for many years. This is a wonderful book to share with Children as I think it helps to teach them compassion towards animals. It shows children that we can all be a part of nature by helping even the littlest creature live on. Hopefully, it teaches some that certain animals are not meant to be in captivity either .If you like this book, you must look for Saving Samantha. It is the Van Frankehuyzen's journal account of raising a baby fox pup who they found as a small kitten captured in a trap. I do not want to give too much away, but as a bookseller, this is my favorite Sleeping Bear Press children's book to date!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2003-04-17

As a naturalist who works with a permanently injured Great Horned Owl, I can say that besides being stunning, the illustrations in this book capture the true facial expressions and body postures of a Great Horned Owl. The information in this book not only draws you into the story, but it is very accurate and educational. I can't recommend this book highly enough to someone looking to present enthralling, accurate information about owl biology to youngsters (or adults for that matter!)

This engaging chronicle of how the author and the great horned owl "Bubo" came to know one another over three summers spent in the Maine woods--and of how Bubo eventually grew into an independent hunter--is now available in an edition that has been abridged and revised so as to be more accessible to the general reader.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-06-16

This book details Bernd Heinrich's experiences with an abandoned owl that he chose to raise by hand. Heinrich is a well-known scientist who specializes in animal behavior. Because of his extensive scientific publications and experience with wild animals, he was granted the necessary permits to raise the baby owl that he found in the woods one day. The owl had fallen out of its nest and was buried in a snowbank. When Heinrich first pulled him out, the bird was in very poor condition, but with a bit of care, he was able to nurse him back to health. He was aware however, that in doing so, he would be responsible for meeting all of this infant bird's needs for months or even years to come. In this book, a journal of the owl Bubo's first three years, Heinrich details all that he learned through his association with Bubo.

Heinrich is a patient and gifted observer. He is also a scientist with a long list of questions about owl behavior. He is able to find answers to many of his questions simply by observation, but others require experiments. His experiments always involve authentic behaviors, such as mobbing or catching food, rather than artificially conceived tasks. Some of the experiments can be completed through focused observation, but one described in this book, involving whether mobbing behavior of predators is innate or learned, required the raising of additional birds, a pair of crows.

In this book, Heinrich provides much background material on owls, in addition to all of his observations. This is not just a reference book about owls, however, but also a model record of the vast amount of information that can be learned through the careful observation of just one animal. The book includes an extensive list of references and an index.

5 out of 5 stars very enjoyable read.......2002-12-30

Heinrich has a way of writing that makes a person understand the relations between people and animals. He makes me laugh at some of the interactions. I very much enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Across the Divide.......2001-10-22

I like to think of Bernd Heinrich as a forest sleuth. Nothing delights him more than prowling, or jogging, through miles and miles of his favorite Maine woods identifying and describing such things as the songs of birds, the cocoons of caterpillars, the smells of beetles and the droppings of moose. In this case, his interests lead him to examine the contents of the stomachs of owls - in particular the stomachs of Great Horned Owls. Owls it seems, eat their prey whole, separate the digestable from the indigestable portions in their stomachs, and when all is said and done regurgitate the inedible stuff as "owl pellets." More than you ever wanted to know about owls? That's what I thought too at first, but it gets better - really.

Not long after discovering a nest of Great Horned Owls on his property, a storm destroys part of the nest and one of the chicks falls to the ground. Heinrich, who can never resist an opportunity to study wild things up close, scoops the little fellow up, christens him Bubo and takes him home to raise. What ensues is a delightful, often revealing account of how an owl and a man struggle to cross the divide between species.

That both are determined is obvious. Heinrich puts up with all sorts of destructive and rude behavior from his childish guest. Bubo chews up, eats and regurgitates washcloths, favorite t-shirts and socks. He holds staring matches with the family cat, terrorizes guests, whom he considers competitors for Heindrich's attention, and rearranges Heindrich's eating and sleeping schedule. In return, Heindrich gets to study everything about the owl - from his eyelids and feather patterns to the mechanical workings of the owl's talons and the meanings of his various hoots and hisses. It is an uneasy if affectionate relationship.

However Heinrich, who works as a university professor, must eventually return to his job and Bubo is sent to a wildlife rehabilitation center. There, all attempts at rehabilitation fail and Bubo is pronounced incorrigable. It is also clear that Bubo is miserable. Heinrich, who feels this is a waste of Bubo's life, eventuallly reclaims the bird, takes him back to Maine and spends another summer helping the bird find his adult wings.

This is a revealing and touching story that goes way beyond the scientific study that Heinrich originally planned. As Heinrich himself acknowledges it became a very personal thing, a relationship between one man and one owl. A wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars "Born Free", this ain't........2000-08-27

This journal of Bernd Heinrich's relationship with a rescued great horned owl named Bubo is engaging, eye-opening and intensely personal. It goes far beyond the usual tales of relationships between wild animals and humans, providing both a record of Heinrich's scientific observations of the interactions of owls and other bird species and an account of how deeply the relationship with the owl impacted the lives of Heinrich and his friends and family. After reading this book, you won't just have a better understanding of the life of owls and birds--you'll feel like you know Heinrich personally.

      Book Description

When zoologist Max Terman came to the rescue of a great horned owlet in a Kansas town park, he embarked on an adventure that would test his scientific ingenuity and lead to unprecedented observations of an owl's hidden life in the wild. In Messages from an Owl, Terman not only relates his experiences nursing the starving owlet, "Stripey," back to health and teaching it survival skills in his barn, but also describes the anxiety and elation of letting a companion loose into an uncertain world. Once Terman felt that Stripey knew how to dive after prey, he set the owl free. At this point his story could have ended, with no clue as to what the young bird's fate would be--had it not been for Terman's experimentation with radio tags. By strapping the tags to Stripey, he actually managed to follow the owl into the wild and observe for himself the behavior of a hand-reared individual reunited with its natural environment.

Through this unique use of telemetry, Terman tracked Stripey for over six years after the bird left the scientist's barn and took up residence in the surrounding countryside on the Kansas prairie. The radio beacon provided Terman with information on the owl's regular patterns of playing, hunting, exploring, and protecting. It enabled him to witness the moments when Stripey was bantered and mobbed by crows, when other owls launched fierce attacks, and when a prospective mate caught Stripey's eye. On occasional returns to the barn, the owl would follow Terman around as he performed chores, usually waiting for a handout.

Until now, scientists have generally believed that an owl nurtured by humans becomes ill-adapted for meeting the challenges of life in the wild. Terman's research proves otherwise. Stripey surpassed all expectations by becoming a totally independent wild creature. With Terman, however, Stripey remained tame, allowing the author to explore something one rarely sees in owls: a warm interest in humanity. Terman engagingly re-creates this dimension of Stripey as he describes with humor and compassion the daily challenges of probing the life of a "phantom winged tiger."

      5 out of 5 stars Well balanced.......2002-02-04

This book follows the life of a Great Horned Owl "Stripey", who was abandoned as a 4 week old chick, and raised and subsequently released and observed by Author and Zoologist Max Terman for a study in Animal behaviour. This thoroughly enjoyable book successfully combines scientific observation, reasoning and speculation with the joys and rewards that relationships between humans and animals can bring. Although a factual account, "Messages from an Owl" reads much like a novel, complete with twists in the plot and happy and sad moments. I highly recommend this book, not only for people interested in biology but for anyone who would enjoy following the life and times of two companions, and Owl and a Man.

Max Terman has given us a most delightful read. I love the typography and layout. The quotes at the head of each chapter lead us on a challenging "Owl Prowl". What a privilege it would be to go in person and check out Stripey and the other owls with Max. But next best thing is pulling his book off of the shelf and reading it again and again. Each new read brings a new insight into the lives of great horned owls and the life of humans who care about them. The book is a classic.

I really love this book. Terman writes with an engaging style and he through him I can feel the triumphs and failures of the owl Stripey. It's not often I get attached to an animal I've never met, but this book brings Stripey to life in ways I wouldn't have imagined.

            Book Description

Readers are invited to stroll through the remarkable garden of quilting patterns this book offers and learn how to make their own favorite flowers come to life through the clever piecing techniques shown.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful & inspiring, but the blocks are challenging!.......2000-09-15

I would have found it helpful to know that this book is meant as a companion to the author's previous book "Piecing: Expanding the Basics," and assumes that you're already familiar with all the piecing techniques. The Appendix in "Pieced Flowers" has a brief overview on how to piece curved seams, inset seams, "Z" seams, "Y" seams, puzzle seams and flaps, but it's a very small part of the book. Most of the flowers have 20 pieces or more per block, while the more detailed ones (like Rose) have over 50 sections. Also, you have to enlarge the patterns on a copier before you can get started.

What I found most inspiring about the book is the way the author presents a number of blocks featuring the same flower, but with quite different results. The variations use straight seams, curved seams, or inset seams depending on the look you want and your piecing skill level. The fabric choices and block settings are creative and unusual too.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite and Varied Quilter's Garden.......2000-05-29

Ruth McDowell provides samples and directions for making multiple variations of 10 beautifully pieced flowers. Each has options in multiple techniques and skill levels. These are some of the most beautiful and realistic pieced flowers I have ever seen. Each flower has options for making it with straight seams or curved seams. Some have options with inset seams. Some have options with 3-dimensional, two-sided "flaps" that are sewn into the seams to create more realism.

The straight seamed (template) versions of the flowers could all be pieced (or paper-pieced) by an adventurous beginner (like myself) although paper-piecing instructions are NOT provided, suggested, or recommended. The author gives her reasons for discouraging paper-piecing with these patterns. The patterns with curved or inset seams are more intricate and a goal for beginners to work toward. Each pattern has a description of the level of difficulty. For example on the asymmetrical version of the straight seamed Campanula the author says, "These blocks have been designed to be easy to piece on the sewing machine. There are no matching seams in either the block or along the edges where the blocks join." For the curved-seam version of the Campanula she says "Its gentle curves are time-consuming, but produce a graceful design."

One potential detraction is that most of the patterns require enlargement. While the recommended percentage of enlargement is specified, if you don't have access to a copier able to enlarge by percentages, this could be a frustrating delay in putting needle to fabric.

In addition to the patterns, Ruth McDowell uses fabric prints and colors in unique ways, both in the flowers themselves, and also in her background fabrics. Just studying her use of fabric is inspiring and educational as well.

My goal is the curved seam, 3-dimensional full-bloom Rose. It is magnificent. There are also patterns for Campanula, Columbine, Cosmos, Daisy, Day Lily (to die for) Hollyhock, Iris, Morning Glory, and Sweet Pea.

This book does not give detailed piecing instructions that might be required by brand-new quilters or beginners with little confidence. But there are tips, hints, and instructions enough to guide intermediate quilters or adventurous beginners.

I have been quilting less than a year and the straight seamed patterns don't daunt me, the curved and inset seamed patterns are tempting rather than intimidating.

This is a beautiful addition to your quilting library.

2 out of 5 stars Pieced or Appliqued Flowers From the AQS Contest.......2001-07-03

The book is a compilation of 7 quilt designers flower quilts. These quilts were pieced with some having applique added. The designs are all unique but there are better books on quilting designs and applique. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Pieced or Appliqued Flowers.......2001-07-03

This book is a compilation of 7 quilt designers work. Each designer created a quilt using piecing techniques to create the look of flowers. There maybe additional appliqued flowers with the pieced design but not always. I feel there are better books on quilt pieced designs and applique designs than this one although all these designs were unique. I would not recommend this book.
