Customer Reviews:
I love the weird ones!.......2004-12-28
This book is cool, I've been to two of the museums already and I'm adding the others to my TO DO list, but BE WARNED. This book was published in 1997 and a new edition is out. I wish I had noticed that before I put this one on my wishlist and received it. If you're interested in these crazy museums (and you really should be) get the updated version of this book and enjoy!
Great escape reading.......2003-03-25
This book is a very good resource for those of you who are looking to break from the pressures of everyday life. Although it is unlikely that you will have the occasion to visit more than a handful of these museums, I think that it is still a great book for anyone interested in getting away and seeing what America used to be like before the Internet. Its short reviews of each museum (2-3 pages) make for very entertaining reading and give the reader a tour of the museums' highlights. As the previous reviewer mentioned, some of the museums are now defunct, an unfortunate end brought about by our fast-paced society. Still, just reading about these fascinating places should inspire the readers imagination. Try it out and if you don't go seeking odd museums in your town, perhaps you should ask yourself why. Again, as the previous reviewer stated, this can become an addicting hobby!
Offbeat Museums - better than most!.......2000-04-07
...and I mean that both ways. The book is better than most books I have used to guide my travels, and offbeat museums are better than (on beat?) ones! As a frequent traveller, this book has guided me well to many of the locations. The descriptions are lighthearted but still in-depth. Its just plain fun reading. Everyone who sees it laying around has to pick it up and give it a read. My only complaint is the at least one of these museums is closed down now, and a few of the directions are a bit hazy. (I did however find every place I looked for!) But overall, even if you aren't planning on GOING to all these places, as I do, it's still a great read. (Be warned: Silly Museums are addictive)

Book Description
In the course of their writing and publishing careers, Russell Ash and Brian Lake have collected hundreds of the book trade's most bizarre titles. From unintended double entendres (Making It in Leather) and astonishingly specialized subjects (Great Locomotive Boiler Explosions) to weird books on sex (Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition), and religion (Hell: Where Is It?), the authors have left no page unturned in their quest. Along the way, they have also catalogued some noteworthy authors, including Violet Organ, Fernando Poo, Bishop Frediricus Nausea, and O. Hell. A final section looks at publishing curiosities, from unusual book bindings (a "fireproof" edition of Fahrenheit 451 bound in asbestos boards) to unfortunate tributes (Venereal Disease and Its Prevention, "affectionately dedicated" to the author's wife). Now revised and updated, Bizarre Books is a guaranteed good laugh.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful Finds of A Book Collector.......2001-02-01
While browsing in one of London's classic book stores, I purchased this thin book as a gag gift for a friend addicted to buying books back in Los Angeles.
My friend never received it. I kept it. You can't let such an odd, funny, and unique book leave your hands. Each page provides insight into strange obsessions and peculiar beliefs that have grabbed writers. Some celebrate taboo lifestyles (The Madam as Entrepreneur: Career Management in House Prostitution; Scalping in America) while others document extreme optimism ( You Can Make a Stradivarius Violin, Thirty-six Reasons for Believing in Everlasting Punishment) and lots of dry British humor (Books in Bottles: The Curious in Literature, and a blank book of 400 pages titled What Women Know About Men.)
An instant classic for book collectors and bookstore owners.
Keep this in the bathroom.......1999-10-13
This is one of those books which is especially good for those unmentionable moments when you can do little more than stare at the bathroom door. Ash and Lake present their amazing collection of odd (and often unintendedly perverse) book titles like "Suggestive Thoughts for Busy Workers", "The Potatoes of Bolivia", "Who's Who in Barbed Wire", "Play with your own marbles", "Making it in leather", and "Scouts in Bondage".
A very funny "dip-into" book.......1998-05-12
I bought this book because of its cover which featured a lady who appeared to be from the fifties holding two toads, upside down, one in each hand. It was apparently the front cover for a book about making profits from raising frogs. The rest of the book is simply about weird and wonderful books. Whether they have unintentionally amusing titles, such as "Penetrating Wagner's Ring", unbelievable prosaic titles such as "A study of Liverpudlian water cocks, 1932-1955" or ridiculous authors' names, one of which included something like "D'Bang-D'Crashes" (I'm using my memory here so these may not be exactly correct) it is a very funny book. I work in London, and the London Underground is a very staid place. But I read it while I was commuting and could not help laughing out loud at some of the entries. I got some very strange looks from fellow commuters until I passed the book to one of them. Then they started laughing out loud too. Even if you can't get a copy for me, could you hunt down who ever I loaned it to and force them to return it to me?

"To all reviewers," John Maxwell Hamilton dedicates Casanova Was a Book Lover. "Because only ungrateful asses would pan a book after having it dedicated to them." Hamilton needn't have taken the precaution. According to his editor, "Our modern reviewer is like a counselor at a self-esteem camp." If so, then gather round the fire, campers--it's time to enlarge Mr. Hamilton's ego. Hamilton's inquiry into the world of books and writing and publishing is sharp, fresh, and witty--erudite but devoid, thankfully, of academese. Each chapter addresses a single, often quirky aspect of the book world. One bemoans the idiocy of most acknowledgments pages, another the cheerleading and book-reportish quality of contemporary reviewing. The book's first chapter examines the writer's economic struggle, cheerily noting the convenience, in this regard, of his or her being in jail: "the big advantage ... is that a writer need not worry about making money or fret about having to take time out for cooking or doing the laundry." Later chapters include an etiquette guide for authors and readers ("reading your friend's book is a nice thing to do, but not required"--whew!), a survey of bad writing by presidents of the United States, and an exploration of the complicated decision-making that takes place at the inundated Library of Congress.
Among the most amusing bits here (though the primer to banal acknowledgments wins hands down) is Hamilton's list not of the bestselling books, which gather momentum just by being popular, but of the best-stolen books. These, he says, are the books people really want. Topping the list, as the Gideons are well aware, is the Bible, the stealing of which, Hamilton muses, "might seem to defeat the purpose of wanting it in the first place: salvation." Even the Waldorf Astoria stocks used books, "so wealthy guests can steal them." Of course, most struggling writers would love to write a book so desired it becomes theft-worthy. A book's success, though, says Hamilton, depends largely on "the talent that best serves a writer," luck. "Sometimes," he adds, "the worst luck, like dropping dead, can be the most fortuitous of all." --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Fascinating, imaginatively idiosyncratic. (Chicago Tribune)
Did you know that Walt Whitman was fired from a government job because his boss found Leaves of Grass immoral? Or that the most stolen books in the United States are the Bible and The Joy of Sex? In this fascinating look into the business of books, John Maxwell Hamilton-a longtime journalist and public radio commentator-provides a witty and rich history sure to delight every bibliophile. From the early days when monks laboriously hand-copied texts to the recent tidal wave of movie tie-ins, Hamilton gives a lively overview of the state of the industry today. Peppered with quirky, spicy tidbits, Casanova Was a Book Lover is indispensable for book enthusiasts who want to know the naked truth about reading, writing, and publishing.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-08-06
About: History, facts and tidbits about the reading, writing, reviewing and publishing of books
Pros: Amusing, funny, interesting. I certainly learned things about the peculiarities of of the book industry.
Cons: Gets bogged down a bit by focusing too much on history
Casanova Was a Book Lover: And Other Naked Truths and Provocative Curiosities About the Writing, Selling and Reading of Books.......2007-01-10
It arrived in a timely manner in excellent condition. I would not hesitate to use this vendor again.
"An excellent book, relatively speaking." Albert Einstein.......2006-07-31
If you like 'Books About Books",you'll find this a real treasure. If you haven't,and you are even a budding Bibliophile, you'll get a great introduction to the whole world of books, writers, critics, booksellers, publishers, bestseller lists;and just about anything else about books;and this book will thrill you.
Make sure you read the other Customer Reviews, they are very good;especially those that have high helpful votes.
The book gives a lot of information about the monetary side of books. It will surprise you to see where the dollar you spend on books ends up.
The book is loaded with bits of information that you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere;or at least without a lot of research. For instance; Hemmingway dedicated books to four different wives.
There are so many great lines and ancedotes;that it is impossible to not find one or more on every page.
Here are a few to show you what's in store for you;
"I laughed my head off." -Marie Antionette
"Couldn't put it down." -Atlas
"I can't wait for the play."-Abraham Lincoln
"You can't beat this book."-Marquis de Sade
"A good read on a rainy day."-Noah
Although I've read many 'Books About Books' ,I found this one informative, enjoyable and a hard one to put down.
Although I have high praise for this book;I strongly disagree with how the author belittles the Customer Reviews here on Amazon. After years of being limited to reading reviews by professional reviewers and critics, finally we now can read reviews written by readers for readers. After all, we can separate the wheat from the chaff, and even vote on them. This is a major step forward for readers. After all;isn't that who the books were written for?
"Praise means nothing if not balanced against criticism."
Insubstantial and Uneven Survey.......2005-11-26
In nine chapters, three appendices, and an introduction, Hamilton (Dean of LSU's School of Mass Communication) tackles various aspects of writing, reading, and selling books in hugely digressive fashion. This is not a book that's going to give the reader a comprehensive picture of, well, anything. Rather, it's a hodgepodge of lit-related musings, ramblings, and trivia. What's most impressive about it is how wide-ranging Hamilton's sources are, as he drags our all manner of anecdotes from the recesses of history. However, his larger points are not particularly insightful or fresh for anyone who has some knowledge of the book publishing industry, and are mostly insubstantial and shallow.
For example, Chapter One is a 35-page overview of the economics of writing, in which it is revealed that hardly anyone can make a living exclusively by writing books. Yawn... This chapter includes stuff like what kinds of day jobs are conducive to getting a lot of writing done, why prison is a good place to write, and other kind of cutesy stuff. Unfortunately, when Hamilton does hit upon an interesting way of illustrating his point, he fails to do it justice. In this chapter he has a graduate student analyze the occupations of authors whose books were reviewed in the Sunday New York Times. But data is only gathered for a month, which seems kind of pointless. If you're going to conduct such an exercise, do it for a year so your data actually has some meaning. Chapter Two is about book marketing, in which is revealed that most books you find in stores are published by multinational media conglomerates (shocking!) who are keenly interested in creating synergies (shocking!) between their book divisions and other media properties like TV, film, internet, etc, and that increasingly, authors are becoming marketable celebrities and brands unto themselves. Again, yawn.
From this big picture stuff, Hamilton switches gears to more lighthearted material in Chapters Three (on book dedications and acknowledgments) and Four (on the etiquette of book parties, signings, gift-giving, etc.). In these much shorter chapters, Hamilton's inclination for wisecrackery and sly humor works much better, and the breezy, gossipy, approach is more appropriate. Chapter Five takes on the topic of contemporary book reviewing and finds it utterly lacking in rigor and teeth. Here, I happen to agree with him (and this is why I much prefer reading reviews from the British press), but he lurches from castigating the mainstream press, to the "get-even" world of academic reviewing, to Oprah's "book cheerleadering", to Don Imus, to Amazon's customer reviews, in nine pages before moving on to bemoaning the numbers of book reviews in mainstream papers, blurbing, an odd attack on the industry practice of review galleys (he doesn't propose a better system), and ending at the flimsiness of best-seller lists. Like most of the book, there are some good tidbits, but Hamilton flies through it all at such a superficial level that his own argument is never convincingly made.
Chapter Six returns to light material, expounding on the role of luck in authorship, such as happening to write a book whose release coincides with some newsworthy event. Chapter Seven is all about the theft of books, which is a neat topic, but hardly a new one -- two 1995 books had chapters on the topic (Alberto Manguel's A History of Reading and Nicholas Basbane's A Gentle Madness). Again, Hamilton has the charming idea of presenting a list of the top ten books stolen in America, however he glosses over its total subjectivity. Instead he says "Despite imperfect statistics... it is possible to piece together a plausible best-stolen list in much the same way police artists sketch a criminal's face from fragmentary recollections." Alas, the notes to the chapter offer no further detail (nor even the sources of the "imperfect statistics"), leaving the "plausibility" rather in doubt.
Chapter Eight returns to throwaway material (why politicians shouldn't try to write books), and then, rather surprisingly, Chapter Nine turns out to be the best part of the book. It's a nice inside look at some of the workings of the Library of Congress, including the process of figuring out what books to keep, the exponential increase in incoming material, and issues of preservation. Appendix A is an eight page miscellany about book promotion by authors, which would have been better placed in Chapter Two. Appendix B is a lame and uninformed four page attack on self-publishing. Appendix C is a five page burst on the decline (or lack thereof) in editing. In the end, this is an OK book for dipping into from time to time, and the extensive notes give plenty of pointers to other, more comprehensive works. But those who want a little meat on their bones are going to find this miscellany rather insubstantial and unsatisfying. It's also rather uneven in tone throughout, as Hamilton see-saws between witty and analytical.
Great Ride.......2005-04-04
This work appeals on many different levels. With the author's sparkling wit a constant companion, the reader is taken on a veritable Aeneid through the literary world. Everything from vanity presses to coming-out parties to the hype machines that drive sales to the overloaded Library of Congress make appearances. The breezy style lulls you into enjoying every little tidbit until you look up to realize that the ride is at an end.
Book Description
Walt Bannon, one of Maine's most notorious bottle diggers, shares the zany and often danger-filled predicaments he's found himself in one too many times. His near scrapes with the law-combined with insanely ridiculous situations-are humorously exposed in this enjoyable book about his antique bottle collecting adventures. You'll learn how he quickly amassed an admirable collection of old glass treasures, but better still, you'll learn from his experiences and mistakes how not to build a collection of antique bottles. If you're already a digger of these old gems, you'll certainly relate to the borderline and perilous aspects of this hobby. However, if you're just curious about Walt's passion for the hunt of these treasures that secretly lie beneath the ground your feet tread upon every day, this book will pleasantly enlighten you.
Customer Reviews:
Walter is an unbelievable character and author!.......2005-09-26
His writing makes one feel as if they're right there with him during all his adventures. I couldn't stop laughing! I wish I was out there with him. I certainly hope he continues to write other books as I wouldn't hesitate to snatch up the first copy! A+ Walter!

Duckie doesn't float upright.......2007-08-19
Even though the book talks about the research that went into making a rubber duck that floats upright, this one doesn't. I have to really work at it to get to float correctly as most of the time it just falls on to it's side.
I'm not happy with it.
Great gift for anyone.......2004-07-10
I have been a rubber duck fan since I was a kid, and this little book - that comes complete with its own collector duck, just touched my heart. I have a new grandson and I am starting him out right in the best of bath traditions!
Collecting rubber ducks has taken on quite a cashe way beyond the original child's toy, and Jodie Davis's book gives a through duckumentary on all stages of the charming little fellow through the ages. Loved it! Sue Ann Taylor
