Book Description
This funny and inspiring story of a lost and lovable guinea pig is now available in paperback. PeeWee, once a boy's dear pet, has been secretly released into the wilds of Central Park. But instead of relishing his freedom, PeeWee is at first a stranger in a strange land--until he meets Lexi, a city-wise squirrel who gives his new stubby-tailed friend some tips, as well as some confidence. It's not long before a series of perilous and eye-opening adventures turns this timid house pet into an endearing hero.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice and relaxing book.......2005-12-09
I read this book in 2 days... just now finished. It was an excellent book that I don't regret reading. In fact, it was not boring at all and it provides some very good lessons for young readers in life. I'd recommend it to any parent to read to their child, or a child seeking a good small (not to many pages) book.
mom of animal lover.......2005-08-22
My kindergartener loves this series. I agree that the idea of an animal being left in the park is a difficult one, but we discussed why we would never do this to our pet, and how dangerous it would be for him, and then moved on and enjoyed a wonderful story with great messages and wonderful opportunites to discuss the perspective of others. My professional expertise is in cognitive development, and this book provides valuable opportunities for children to think about others' perspectives and think about the larger world around them. It is a book that can be enjoyed by both parents and children. I'd highly recommend it.
Adorable Book for Young Reader's.......2004-02-26
PeeWee, a small guinea pig, is born in Casey's Pet Shop, along with his four siblings, where his Mother takes care of them all. As they begin to grow, PeeWee becomes interested in the scraps of newspaper lining his cage, and soon his Mother is teaching him how to read, as she used to be the class pet in an elementary school, and learned alongside all of the children. Before long, PeeWee is adopted by a nice man, who brings him home as a birthday present for his nephew. Things are good for a while, until the boy goes away, and somehow PeeWee finds himself all alone in New York City's Central Park. Lucky for him, he meets up with Lexi, a very street-wise squirrel, who takes Pee-Wee under his tail, and begins showing him the ropes of living in the wild. Soon PeeWee is torn between searching for his owner, and his nice safe cage, or staying in the depths of Central Park, where he has to fend for his life.
Being someone who has loved guinea pigs all of her life, and has owned many in the past (all have sadly passed away), I couldn't resist picking up PEEWEE'S TALE at the bookstore. The cover alone sold me, but the plot of the story made me even more eager to purchase the book. Johanna Hurwitz has created a fantastic story completely narrated and explained by a group of adorable animals, namely PeeWee, much in the same fashion of Betty Boegehold (Here's Pippa!). The art, by Patience Brewster, is amazing, and resembles the animals so closely that you actually feel that you are looking at a photograph. Children of all ages, along with their parents, will love reading about PeeWee's adventures, and looking at the beautiful drawings that accompany them.

I would rate it 5 stars.......2004-01-12
My favorite character in this book is Pee Wee because I like hamsters. Pee Wee does not remind me of anybody I know. My favorite part is when Pee Wee starts to get the hang of living in wild life. I would recommend this book to my friend Lucy because she likes cute stuff. I like the happy parts of the book. If Pee Wee were a person and he went to my school I would be friends with him if he were nice, but not if he were not nice.
Pee Wee rates high for my pee-wee reader!.......2001-09-10
My son learned to read using Johanna Hurwitz's marvelous Russell/Riverside Kids series, and so we were very excited to begin Pee Wee's Tale. We were not disappointed! The animal story is a nice diversion from Hurwitz's more realistic fiction, but still has all of her markings as an author: humor, empathy and strong characterization. Yes, my son was concerned about the guinea pig's plight, and yes, the release of the guinea pig into the park raised an eyebrow...but it also incited some wonderful discussion about caring for pets and how animals adapt in the wild. Besides being an exciting and provocative chapter book for emergent readers, I think this would make a great classroom read-aloud, and I am giving it as a gift to my son's teacher! Also, don't miss Lexi's Tale, the sequel from a squirrely point of view!

A Marvelous Easy-to-Understand Book About Death.......2004-10-12
One morning, a young boy wakes up to find his beloved pet mouse, known as Mousie, asleep. No matter what the little boy does, Mousie just won't wake up. His Father informs him that young Mousie has died. The young boy doesn't want to believe his Father. After all, little Mousie was fine the day before, and he was a very happy mouse. The boy is soon overcome with anger that Mousie has left him without any warning, and feels very sad. But after talking about the good times he shared with Mousie, and creating a special box for Mousie's burial that is filled with all kinds of goodies for Mousie to enjoy once he gets to mouse-heaven, the boy begins to feel a lot better about the loss of his beloved Mousie.
Robie H. Harris has done a marvelous job in creating a book for young children, that will explain to them easily why their pet had to die. The prose is wonderful, and possesses an easy-to understand format, while each page is filled with gorgeous full-color illustrations by Jan Ormerod. GOODBYE MOUSIE is a spectacular book that should occupy a space on everyone's bookshelf. Especially for those who have young children, and own pets.

realistically written and beautifully illustrated.......2002-11-11
I checked this book out at the library not knowing the subject. The cover shows a small boy playing with his mouse, but the first page starts out with the boy waking up to find his mouse "asleep". Written in the first person (of the boy), this book is sensitive and realistic in how a parent might help a young child deal with the death of a pet. It relates the father's tenderness in talking with his son, who goes through the range of emotions, including denial, sadness and anger. The boy appears to be of the preschool age, and while he seems to understand the finality of death, he also wants his mousie friend to be warm, well fed, and entertained after they bury him. The words are comforting to read and the illustrations are simple and beautifully done.
My 3 yr old boys have not personally experienced the death of a pet, but they've asked to read it several times. Our next door neighbor's dog died this summer and relate the mouse and the dog. They are very aware of the fact that the mouse died and is gone to "mousie heaven" (their words, not the books). They ask questions and empathize with and comfort the boy. We personally have an older bunny and dog, so I will certainly have this book in mind when they pass on.
What a magnificent way to teach children about loss!.......2001-12-13
I work as a therapist, and I think this is a great book to help to "normalize" (as much as possible) the process of losing a pet. I think this book can also serve as a springboard for children and parents to talk openly about loss. Robie Harris' book is a hit!
A realistic story to help children cope with loss........2001-11-18
Today I read ten books for children on death and loss at my local book store. GOODBYE MOUSIE by Robie H. Harris was selected for its clear, realistic emotions experienced by a young boy when his pet dies. The book was purchased to place in an elementary school library in memory of a first grade teacher who unexpectedly passed away recently.

Customer Reviews:
Good photos, poor information.......2001-09-20
As a longtime hedgehog owner and rescuer, I am saddened to see that this is one of the more widely distributed books on pet hedgehogs in the country. The information is outdated and inaccurate, but since hedgehogs are fairly new as pets, many novice owners will not catch on to the problems in this book.
The diet that Mr. Kelsey-Wood recommends in his books is too high in fat, too low in protein for a pet hedgehog. In addition, the habitats he shows are too small for a typical active hedgehog! But for those owners used to seeing small mammals like hamsters in tiny cages, with grain-based diet, how are they expected to know that hedgehogs have radically different needs?
Mr. Kelsey-Wood certainly does nothing to enlighten them. Hedgehogs all over the country are receiving sub-standard care as a result of the information in this book.
I disagree.......2000-03-08
I disagree with Mr. McCurdy's review of African Pygmy Hedgehogs As Your New Pet. As an owner of several African Pygmy Hedgehogs I like the cutesy pictures, and especially the wall poster included with the book. The book was very informative about maintaining the health of African Pygmy Hedgehogs. If you buy a hedghog, buy this book.
This makes a better picture-book than resource........1998-12-15
The content is sometimes controversial, the index is lousy, and all those lovely photos make it near impossible to skim the contents for a particular tidbit of information.
Focus is too much on breeding and not enough on beginning.......1998-07-23
This book does not seem basic enough overall for a new hedgie owner. While there is basic information, the focus seems to be more on setting up for breeding than for having pets. The information is not thorough enough to answer all the questions a new owner would have. While it helped me get started, it still left me wondering what to do next.

Book Description
Wonderful, delicately crafted full-color illustrations accompany the story of Harriet, a tiny Russian hamster who has escaped from her cage. At first, she seems to be in a land of wonder--a garden with a green grass carpet, giant plants, and birds that streak across the sky and land on tree branches to sing. But this is a most unfamiliar world to a very small hamster. It's filled with surprises, and not all of them are pleasant. Maybe the best place for Harriet to be is back in her owner's arms.

Good, basic information.......2007-06-22
Karen Bawoll's book is a great guide for new guinea pig owners, but lacks the detail of other books. It's a great place to start to learn about cavies. Note that a guinea pig's cage should be at least 7.5 square feet, however. Visit www.guineapigcages.com for more info. Good luck!
Perfect for new Owners.......2004-05-18
I bought this book when I got my first two guinea pigs. This is a great guide and I highly reccomend it. It has many full-color photos and an easy to understand format. Important things you'd really want to know are in bold, and the index is quite large. And so far, I haven't found any errors. Plus, the guinea pigs featured in the book will make you squeal since they are so CUTE! :D
I've also found that there is a section that informs you about genetics. It's very interesting... it can help you trace down exactly what the unknown parents of your little piggie probably looked like.
This book is perfect for first time owners!!

Customer Reviews:
Good Ideas .......2007-09-08
I'm pretty much a beginner beader. I've been beading for about two years. Primarily I make bracelets. Often, when trying to use someone's pattern for a bracelet, I get stuck trying to make the clasp. Either I don't have the right beads on hand or I just can't follow what the pattern says. That's when I turn to this little book. I wouldn't be without it. There is a lot of info in here for beginners, but there are also a lot of ideas for finishing your piece. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a little reminder of the simpler ways to finish your pieces, or for someone who needs some "how to" instruction.
Should be "seed beads" in the title.......2007-06-20
I purchased this book based on the 4 star review ratings and the title. While this is a beatiful book with many great pictures, there is very little on making your own findings. It is mostly about seed beads, something I am not very intersted in. There are also lots of purchased findings, but even a novice like me knows how to use a purchased clasp! If you want to learn how to make your own findings, buy another book. Bead on a Wire is much better and great for begineers.
Findings & Finishings: A Beadwork How to Book.......2007-06-07
Very good book with many findings options; however, I had expected more examples of creating my own findings
Comprehensive.......2007-05-09
This has a very complete complement of the various finding and finishes for all types of jewelry. The instructions were well written and diagrammed. Not a book I would recommend to beginners, but for someone with some experience in beading.
Finding & Finishings: A Beadwork How-To Book.......2007-01-19
I was felt this book is only good for a beginner. And unless you want seed bead projcts with bulky seed beed togles well you may want another book. This book clearly demonstrates things like crimp beads, so if that's what you want this may be helpful to you
