Book Description
Naturalist Hope Ryden's stunning photographs accompany clear, conversational essays telling of her observations and experiences as she tracked the mustangs of the West. Wild horses evolved and roamed in North America until becoming extinct ten thousand years ago. Not until the early sixteenth century, when the conquistadors brought tough mounts to carry them as they explore what is now Mexico and the Southwest, did the horse reappear on American soil. Hope Ryden describes how the Plains Indians adopted the horse, which transformed their culture. But many of their horses escaped into the wild and reverted to primitive behaviors-such as forming tight-knit social groups with complicated social hierarchies-that enabled them to thrive and survive. Horse lovers and history buffs, as well as all who relish a good true-life adventure, will be fascinated and moved by this compelling portrait of a national treasure. Bibliography.

Wonderful companion book to "America's Last Wild Horses".......2006-02-16
Beautifully laid out & photographed.
Remarkable photographs by a remarkable woman. The author has spent the majority of her life documenting the last remaining herds of wild mustangs along the Wyoming-Montana Pryor Mountain range.
The last few pages in the book feature wonderful photographs of the various colours of these mustangs, from grulla, to medicine hat pinto, to buckskin, cremello, blue roan, etc - followed by text and commentary by the author describing these colours.
This is the companion book to the author's previous release: "America's Last Wild Horses".
Well written & informative book.......2005-08-02
Written by someone who has spent many years with these magnificent animals. Great photos and stories. I gave the book to my 13 year old niece and she loves it.
Well Done!.......2000-07-27
Hope Ryden has done an excellent job on her book. Beautiful pictures of horses are every where in this book. Hope has followed several herds of wild mustangs and observed their behavor. I am amazed at her knowledge of these horses and she has shared it with us in her book. Meet The Black King-the undisputed leader of his harem defend his mares against other stallions and the Bandidos. Read about Hope's narrow escapes and her funniest moments. Young and old will love reading this book over and over and gazing for hours at the beautiful pictures.
Book Description
No wild animal captures the spirit of North America quite so powerfully as the wild horse--nor has any faced such diverse and potent enemies. In this provocative account, Hope Ryden--who helped to ensure the passage of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act, which grants mustangs special protection--combs the history of these proud and noble horses. Descended from the Spanish horses ridden by the conquistadors, they evolved into the tough and intelligent ponies that Indians--and later, explorers and cowboys--learned to rely on.
From the period when wholesale extermination of the buffalo was under way until recent times, commercial and political interests have sought to eliminate the wild horses as varmints. In this update to this classic story, Ryden tells of the successes and failures of regulation, and includes stunning color photographs. The subject of a front-page article in The New York Times when it was first published,
America's Last Wild Horses continues to be a compelling testament to the life of a uniquely American symbol of grace and wildness, and is a must-read for horse lovers and Western history enthusiasts everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable book. Conveys meaning, insight, understanding, and sensitivity........2006-02-16
This book first came to my attention when I saw a review of it in Time Magazine, 1970(!), and then again in a National Geographic issue 1977.
My first copy (Ballantine Books, Inc. May 1973) became so dog-eared and worn, that I bought the revised edition (Lyons Press) as a gift to myself in Dec 2000.
Quite a remarkable book in it's history, coverage and research. The mustang has been much maligned by ranchers and the U.S. government as a nuisance and classified as "domestic strays," thus various methods have been used to round up these poor beasts (remember the film "The Misfits"?)and subject them to every kind of mistreatment imagineable, including death.
Thankfully, through the efforts of Ms Ryden and her book, and various animal protection agencies, we now recognize the contribution, history and legacy that these horses have played such an important part in the history and settlement of the American west. They are the only living heritage and symbol of the history of the west, and as such, should be granted protection as an endangered species from all levels of government in the U.S.
A truly wonderful book. A must have for every horselover. Belongs with Ms Ryden's companion book "Wild Horses I Have Known" which features full colour, full page, never before published photographs not seen in her first book.
Good read but written with a distinct pro-Canada bias.......2005-01-13
I learned a lot about how the West was formed from this book. Hope has done some wonderful research on this topic. I agree with Hope about the US government's mistreatment of wild animals. They're disgusting and they're still spewing their false propaganda to get the naive American public to believe their falsehoods. However, Hope makes several extremely pro-Canada opinions which I disagree about. First of all, the Canadian government has allowed wild horse hunting to be legal, even today. There are only 200 wild horses left in Canada, compared to about 37,000 (BLM estimates - who knows how truthful they are) in the American wild. Canada treats its wild animals dastardly. Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are slaughtered for their fur. Their bloody carcasses are strewn on the virgin white snow, a sad and tragic reminder of the callousness of the Canadian government to its wild animals. They're no better than the US government when it comes to wild animals and I think in some ways, the US government is better than their northern counterparts, especially over the last thirty odd years. Canada also has an ancient and very archaic domestic animal protection law. Last year, animal protection agencies worked to have a new, tougher law passed but it was defeated in Parliament.
Full of Information!.......2000-04-07
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in wild horses and mustangs. The author does a great job of providing historical knowledge and facts about the early relationship between wild horses and men, and about how horses roamed America before they were reintroduced by Europeans. The author also discusses current issues involving mustangs and their future in the American West. This book is so good I definately needed it for my personal collection.

Sierra.......2005-07-07
I thought this book was so good I read it 3times.Kathleen Duey is great at discribing Sierras' fellings. My favorite part was when Sierra meets Storm.
For Horse Lovers Everywere.......2005-06-15
Kathleen Duey was inspired to write this amazing series from the favorite movie "Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron". Sierra is a young filly who loved running with her friend Fern. Tally, the lead mare, was friends with Sierra's mother and is very protective of the herd. One day, Sierra gets into REAL trouble which makes her in true trouble( you'll have to raed to find out). While traveling in the desert, the herd meets up with Feugo, the new leader of the herd. He's more protective than Tally and more stubborn. The herd was traveling to the winter grounds down South, but Feugo pushed the herd North. Sierra was feeding on tough grass far from the herd when her adventure begins.
This book is from a horses point of veiw to!

"Sierra" is Awesome!!.......2004-01-15
Sierra was a totally awesome story about a beautiful paint filly out chasing her dreams. Seirra and her best friend Fern are always out galloping together (and sometimes getting into trouble). One of Seirra's gallops costs the herds' stallion, and well.... read it and find out!!! The book has great discription and Kathleen Duey is a great author. I also have Esperanza too, another great book by Kathleen D.
I really loved this book and if you're horse crazy, I really recommend it! :)

Book Description
Horses were in Annie Bronn's blood. For as long as she could remember, she had been fascinated by the spirited wild mustangs that roamed free throughout the West. So when greedy cattlemen started to round up the mustangs for slaughter, Annie knew it was up to her to save the breed.
The true story of Wild Horse Annie's crusade to save the mustangs is inspiring. Readers will cheer her on, all the way to the White House, in her struggle to preserve these beautiful creatures from extinction.

For the cowgirls in all of us..........2004-09-29
I have always been a cowgirl, western, country girl my whole life. I bought this book a while back when I was into the Misty series and I wanted to know what were some of hte other books Henry wrote. This book was truly inspiring and beautiful. I was rooting for Annie the whole time! This is the perfect book for the biggest cowgirl and horse nut.
Lovely, a memorable story.......2002-05-02
When I was in Elementary School, I read all of the books in the school library that had to do with horses. Of all of them, this was my favorite. I've remembered it until today when I decided to refresh my memory from 7 years ago. I think it's so neat that books like this can stay with you and impact your outlook after so many years. This is such a beautiful and inspiring story, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
" A Horse Story That You Would Want to Cherish.".......2000-10-06
Mustang:Wild Spirit of the West is a good story about a girl who loves horses all of her life. When she grows up, she tries to stop the killing of wild mustangs. It is a story that I'm sure you would enjoy.
A heartwarming story.......1999-11-04
I first read the book in sixth grade for a book report. One of my friends said I should read it because my name is Annie, too. The aspect I like most about it was the fact that it the hero was a woman, and she fought with courage and determination for something that she believed was right.
One of the best books i've ever read!.......1999-05-10
This story was so wonderful. I love horses, and it made me want to fight for the mustangs too! (Yes they still are rounded up and slaughtered "when their numbers get too great") I would recommend this book to anyone!

Product Description
Experience the untamed beauty of early America in Where the Rivers Run North, a new historical novel from Sam Morton. Morton's extensively researched fiction carries the reader through three eras in the history of Abraska, or what is now southern Montana and northern Wyoming. From the days when Native American tribes dominated the landscape to the hardships of fledgling pioneer life to times of fast-paced modern development, Where the Rivers Run North introduces a shifting cast of characters as intriguing as they are diverse. One thread runs throughout--the figure of the horse, whether running wild on the plains or competing on the racetrack.
Customer Reviews:
fun and informative.......2007-09-03
With the horse as it's foundation, "Where the Rivers Run North," is a sprawling patchwork of the history of the Absaraka area of the old West. It is a must read for anyone with an interest in horses and sure to be entertaining for anyone familiar with the area. Though labeled as fiction, the book is based on the actual people, horses and events shaped by this land. As someone who grew up in the area and who is acquainted with the history of the people who inhabit his book, I find that Mr Morton's colorful vignettes capture the true character and flavor and spirit of this time and place in history.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT book, loved every second of it!!.......2007-03-12
At firse I thougt, meh. What is there to be said about Esperanza finding a mate and then finding somewhere to live? But every second is packed with great immage discription, throughtful wrighting, and perfect words to describe what the horses are doing!
Instead of saying "the horse rubbed his leg" She would say somthing like "As the horse relaxed, he lowered his head to rub an itch on his foreleg."
WONDERFUL! Love it!!
Her wrighting is so good that she inspired me to wright a book,(for fun only!) Here is a little piece of it!----
......the wolf in the front stood on a large bolder, she tilted her head back and let out a call. Shadow and Tally stood to afraid to move, finally Tally snorted and turned to run off bumping into Shadow as she did. Shadow realized her friend was running, and her bolted after her. The wolf on the bolder barked fiercely and jumped after the frightened foals.
Elsewhere in the Hills, Bonita and Ella where looking for the missing foals. The foal's screams pierced through the air, reaching all the horses in the herd. Everyone lifted their head from grazing and pranced around startled. Star's head shot up at the sound of his young's desperate cries for help, his nostrils flared, and he shot off in the direction of the commotion.
Tally and Shadow where running from the wolfs, but the distance between them and their predators was getting smaller. One of the wolf's snapped at Shadows foot, luckily the wolf got kicked in the face instead. Star broke from some thin bushes, and struck out at the wolfs with his hoofs. The wolf who had gotten kicked in the face ran off, but the remaining three where deliberate to not leave empty pawed.
Star's neck rippled as he reared up to lash out with his front hoofs. He whirled around to strike. He snapped the air and stomped on the ground, but the wolfs dodged out of the way. As sudden as Star appeared, Ella came from the bushes. Her short legs couldn't carry her as fast as Star's legs carried him. Together her and Star lashed and kicked, until only one wolf was brave enough to keep fighting. It was the wolf who had been atop the bolder. Star reared, trying to warn the wolf, but Ella cantered out and attempted to stomp on the wolf. The wolf dodged and jumped on Ella's back. The dark wolf bit into her powder white neck and wouldn't let go. Star tried to strike the wolf, but he couldn't get close enough without kicking Ella. As Ella bucked and kicked in panic, trying to free herself, she slipped and plummeted to the ground......
(don't think I am copting, because although my story includes a wolf attack too, it isn't the same. I also know that most of my horses names are from the book. But I am so bad at coming up with them! I tryed to think of my own, but couldn't. Besides, I'm not trying to publish it or anything. :)
Best book.......2005-11-27
This is one of my favoret books. It has lots of adventure, I love it!
SUPER!!.......2003-11-29
The Best Book I ever will Propably read, I read it in one evening! For anyone, who wants a great book, Esperanza should be at the top of their list!
Esperanza Rules!!!!.......2003-06-18
This book is amazing! I have read all the other books in the Spirit collection, but this one is the best. I like these books because they are about wild horses. Esperanza is a palomino(and Spirit's dam), so she is my favorite. ESPERANZA RULES!!!!!
A Very Good Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-02-04
I loved this series. I loved how the author took it from the horses point of view and not the humans view like so many other books have done in the past.
I hope Kathleen Duey ( the author) will keep writing!
I recomend this is a good book for any horse crazy people ( and the other books too!).

Marxism and Medicine.......2001-11-30
This is a groundbreaking work from the medical editor of Mother Jones Magazine. It's a shame that it's out of print; I made the mistake of loaning out a great book, and because of this I'll probably never see it again. Drummond combines Marxism with Freud, with Darwinism to editorialize his personal experience practicing medicine in Free Market America. It's amazing how one can read so many different books on humanity and turn around and find a small gem tying it all together as efficient as Drummond's Spirited Guide has. Note to the wise: keep this book around as reference, but don't loan it out.
