Excellent Choice!.......2001-08-20
Being an avid reader of dog books, and a Whippet fancier, I was excited to hear that this book was coming out. I bought it at the first opportunity! It is of special interest to those who are in the UK or who wish to use UK bloodlines in other parts of the world. However, there are excellent chapters on the breed in other lands. Also, the care information is practical and useful to new puppy owners and more experienced owners alike. The book is full of gorgeous photos and is written in an enjoyable to read style.

Good book, maybe more for established owners.......2003-09-16
I have this book also, i have possibly an older version, focused a bit more on the Engllish side of the whippet breed.
It is more focused on breeding, showmanship etc..
It also has recipes for the home-cooker, where you don't feed from the can ( for example there are recipes etc.. )
It IS a good book and interesting, but it should be a book after you have a whippet, or for light reading, not if you want to read up before purchasing.

Whippets Today - for the expert only.......2000-08-05
First a disclaimer: I haven't had a dog in over thirty years. So adopting a whippet was daunting. I wanted a book that told me how to take care of this new creature in my life - how much food and exercise she needs, the kinds of toys and games whippets tend to enjoy, etc. What I got instead was a book that described the various international standards by which whippets are judged in the show ring, and a great deal of detail on champions, their bloodlines, breeders and kennels. This is fine for those interested in breeding or showing, but wholly inadequate and superfluous to the besotted albeit novice whippet owner!

Book Description
Elegant and affectionate, the Whippet rose from his humble beginnings as the "poor man's greyhound" to become an agile professional race dog and a highly prized companion and show dog. Today the breed enjoys great popularity around the world. The Whippet is hailed among the fastest of all sighthounds, though he is fairly small compared to the Greyhound. For the right active family, the Whippet makes an adaptable and fun-loving pet, as swift of mind as he is of foot.
The book outlines the breed's origins in England and its arrival in the US. The author discusses the breed's characteristics and standard and provides her excellent advice about selecting a well-bred puppy, rearing, socializing, house-training and obedience training. This colorful and fully up-to-date guide also offers guidance on feeding, exercise, home safety, grooming and other topics vital to the ownership of a Whippet.

Great Guide for Whippets.......2007-07-22
Picked up our Whippet puppy yesterday and this is a great guide for most of the things we need to know to take care of him. Excellent read, great photos.
An excellent book for Whippet enthusiasts.......2005-10-14
"Whippet" by Juliette Cunliffe is a wonderful book. It goes into great detail about history, owning, training, puppies, and care. Very comprehensive. What I love most about it is the visual appeal. It's a hard back, and the photographs within it are gorgeous - all color, with some really stunning Whippets. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Whippets, and enjoys looking at photos of this amazing breed!

Product Description
The most extensive line of basic pet information and training guides on the market, Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals are written by experts, and profusely illustrated with full-color photos and instructive, high-quality line art. Each manual is individually written. Not one of Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals is a clone from a single common catch-all book, with one or two chapters added on to make it appear new. Instead, each Barron's manual has been planned, designed, and written from scratch?always by an experienced breeder, trainer, veterinarian, or qualified expert. Related to the English Greyhound, Whippets are often bred as racing dogs. Smaller than Greyhounds, they tend to be gentle and mild when inside the house, and make a family pet that is easy to care for. Here is information on the characteristics of this animal, plus advice on purchasing, grooming, training, health care, and much more. Paperback / 120 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 1998

A wonderful Whippet book.......2005-10-14
I have found this book to be an excellent source for Whippet enthusiasts. It is quite comprehensive, has some stunning photography, and deals with pretty much every facet of owning one of these wonderful animals. It gave me a great deal of insight into Whippets in general. Highly recommend it!
Helped me buy my baby!!!!.......2004-09-10
i love this book. by reading it, i chose to get a whippet as my next dog. i already have a golden retriever, but she's really my mom's dog and i wanted one of my own to take to new york city when i go to college. as luck would have it, my cousin, raymond, who is one of the top whippet breeders in the country, called me and told me he had two little puppies who needed homes. my mom, my brother, my brother's friend, and i all went to his house one weekend and came home with an eight week old puppy. i named him elton, and he's sitting in my lap right now as a twelve week old adolescent. thank you so much, to the wonderful authors, for helping me choose my next breed of dog!
Excellent Primer for Would Be Whippet Owners.......2003-10-04
While the book is fairly concise, it is a very thorough handbook for owning a Whippet. I have referenced it many times in the few months since owning a Whippet puppy and each time it has something valuable to say. I highly suggest owning this book.
Valuable information.......2003-01-02
Great book - comprehensive guide for whippet owners. Useful information for those primarily interested as a pet owner rather than those looking for specialised advice on breeding, showing etc. Highly recommended. Should be mandatory reading for all prospective/new whippet owners. The information is detailed yet highly readable. The writing is of an excellent standard making it a pleasure to read.
Good basic info.......2002-08-31
I bought this book after adopting our whippet pup. It is a good overview of the basics for this breed. It is focused on health and happiness of your pet and basic care, entertainment, raising, training, and health/first aid of your pup. It's a good book to have for reference for those of us who "just like the breed" (probably not specific enough for breeders/showers).

Where's the Whippet?.......2004-10-17
I'm a big Wallace and Gromit fan, and a Whippet fancier so I thought I'd love this book. Though it was a cute story, I'm afraid the Whippet in the story did not look ANYTHING like a real Whippet, I don't know what they were were thinking of- they could have made some effort to reproduce a realistic Whippet. The Whippet club was listing this book in their "books on Whippets" section- Whippet fanciers who buy this book because they think they are going to see a Whippet are going to be very disappointed. Fun story, so I'll give it 4 stars for being entertaining, but the Whippet looked kind of like a Dachshund with long legs! Awful! I think they could have tried a little harder.

Book Description
Originally published in 1904 this extremely scarce early work on the Whippet is both expensive and hard to find in this edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and illustrations as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Freeman Lloyd was an expert on dogs and wrote several books on various breeds. This book on the whippet was his best, and is much sought after by true "whippeters." As a respected member of the National Whippet-Racing Club, he wrote from his wealth of experience of this wonderful little racing/hunting dog. The book consists of over a hundred pages divided into sixteen detailed chapters and is illustrated with vintage photos of typical dogs and diagrams of tracks, including an additional gallery of photos at the rear. Contents Include: Make, Shape and Characteristics. Breeding. The Whippet as a Snap-Dog. As a Race-Dog. As a Sporting Dog. As a Show Dog. As a Companion. Training. Tracks and Racecourses. Racing Rules. Management of Meetings. Tables of Times, Distances and Weights. The Rules of Handicapping. Kennels. Food and Clothing. Diseases. This is a fascinating read for any whippet enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

It might almost be argued that the cigar lifestyle magazines that Eric Spitznagel so perfectly parodies are already beyond a joke, but Cigar Asphyxianado manages to get a lot of laughs out of a very bad habit. Describing itself as "Not the best magazine on cigars, but certainly the most pretentious," this book touches every base--from the cigar-toting celebrity cover-shot (Fidel Castro) to the ads that promise that "Size Does Matter." And for the tobacco tyro, there are even instructions on how to light your favorite stogie:
Angle the cigar 25 degrees below horizontal and hold the flame exactly 1/3" below the foot. Rotate the cigar under the flame, alternating between clockwise and couterclockwise, allowing 23 seconds for the clockwise rotations and 29 seconds for the counterclockwise, while puffing the cigar every two to four minutes (depending on the room temperature). Continue this process for 43 minutes.
This book will probably prevent Eric Spitznagel from ever visiting Cuba, and people who actually buy magazines about cigars may not get the joke, but for everyone else, Cigar Asphyxianado is a lot of fun. --Simon Leake

A clever, humorous parody on the cigar craze.......1998-10-10
Mr. Spitznagel has allowed us to laugh at ourselves with his irreverant parody aimed at the cigar craze of the '90's and at the Cigar Aficinado magazine. I think Mr.Shanken, the author of the Cigar Aficinado and Wine Spectator magazines ( I subscribe to both ), should be flattered by this book. It allows us to laugh at ourselves and is wonderfully written and illustrated. I have given it as a gift to many friends along with the magazine........but it's getting difficult to find so I would recommend you get them now for Xmas gifts.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing more than a few tips for the beginner smoker.......2002-02-27
This was the first cigar book I bought, and I outgrew it within a week. Most of the information it presents can be found on the Internet.
I learned a lot from the chapters that introduce basic cigar shapes and wrapper colors and discuss how to store, cut, light, and smoke cigars. But the meat of the guide, the index of cigar ratings, most of which was done in 1996 and 1997, wouldn't be very useful in a cigar shop today. I've found my local tobacconist's advice to be much more helpful.
I learned more about alcoholic beverages from this book than I did cigars. Cognac and brandies, port, scotch and Irish whiskey, rum, and bourbon each have a chapter dedicated to them. Those unfamiliar with these drinks will learn a little about their distinguishing qualities. Unfortunately, there are no suggestions in this book about matching cigars with drinks, but Cigar Aficionado has since posted articles about cigar and drink compatibility on its Web site.
The final few pages of the guide are a personal cigar tasting log in which all but the most occasional of smokers would quickly run out of room. You can of course transfer the basic format of the tasting log to a notebook, or purchase a separate tasting log (tasting log software for PC's and palmtops is available too).
If you're very new to cigars and happen to see a copy of the CA Buying Guide at your local library, go ahead and borrow it. If you want a book about cigars for your bookcase, I'd recommend The Good Cigar by Jeffers and Gordon. Other than that, take advantage of the wealth of information on the Internet.
very informative, but no illustrations, hard to locate.......1999-02-09
This is a very informative book, but unfortunatly, unlike "Cigar Aficionado" magazine, illustrations of the cigars are not included with the reviews, so at times, due to the lack of conformatity in categorizing cigars sizes, it is slightly difficult to identify a specific cigar. Since cigar manufactors have so many different lines with very similiar lenths and ring sizes it is difficult to locate a specific cigar without a lot of flipping around, the reviews are catagorized by "size name", (ie. corona, robusto, ect.), which can differ from manufactor to manufactor.
A must for any cigar enthusiast!.......1998-12-23
If your looking for a good novel, you need to look elsewhere. If you are interested in learning more than you ever wanted to know about cigars, then you've found your book. Cigar Aficianado is one of the leading authorities on the world of cigar's and cigar smoking. The Buying Guide is so much more than that. It includes tips on cutting, lighting, and smoking, liquers that go well with cigars, ratings of cigars, as well as names and addresses of fine tobacco stores and cigar friendly restaurants from around the U.S. This book was a gift to me from a friend and it makes a wonderful gift. If you are an avid cigar enthusiast or just an occasional partaker of the finer pleasure of cigars, you will want to add this book to your collection.

celebrating the cigar.......2007-01-15
This tiny gift-book from CIGAR AFICIONADO latches onto the celebratory nature of modern cigar-smoking and works it for all its potential. Essentially, it's a compilation of quotes by cigar smokers and about cigar smoking that will give the average celebratory cigar smoker a good chuckle.
A good stocking-stuffer for the guy who fits the demographic.
Just a book of quotes.......2002-02-15
This LITTLE book (roughly 2 inches by 3 inches) is just a collection of quotes about cigars by mostly famous people, interspersed with only 10 actual tips on cigar smoking etiquette and methods. A short entertaining bathroom read, but by no means is this a guide or "instruction" manual.

Clever writing by Marvin R. Shanken. I look forward to reading more from this connoisseur - over a fine cigar and possible cognac.

Book Description
The cigar authority. This annual all-in-one reference is recognized as the most comprehensive and complete cigar guide on the market today. Over 800 pages featuring 1,443 brands of cigars marketed nationally in the United States. Details provided include the country of origin of the wrapper, filler and binder; shapes and sizes; brand facts; and the proverbial favorite, "births and deaths."
Customer Reviews:
Perelman's Cigar Book.......2003-02-26
More photographs would have been helpful. Pictures of the entire line of each brand, with a close-up of one band, would have been much more useful than much of the text.
The proliferation of commercial ads brings the integrity of already subjective commentary into question. Objective information, such as country of origin, is much more useful overall.
All that being said, the book has it's uses, and was a fair value at the purchase price.
The source........2003-01-07
If your looking for a definitive listing of all the cigars on the market today, this is it. Don't kid yourself and think this is anything more than what it is...a paper database of the world's cigars. if that is what your looking for, you have found it.
No real added value.......2002-04-04
Perelman's Pocket cyclopedia doesn't rate cigars, it's only a list of all non-cuban brands and their size, so don't plan any buys in Cuba with this book. This book is also of a small size (pocket size) as well as his font size which makes it quite difficult to read.
Missing Link - No band pictures........2001-11-07
I expected the cyclopedia to include pictures of the cigar bands. It doesn't. Without a rosetta stone to correlate the listing in the cyclopedia to the actual cigar, it's pretty usless to me.
The info listed; shape, name, length, ring, and wrapper; can already be found any number of places on the Net.
The Bible for the cigar industry........1999-10-22
Pearlman's lists 97% of the cigars on the markettoday. Published yearly, the book has been growing in leaps and boundsfor the past 3 years. We are in the cigar business, and when someone calls us and asks about a cigar and we've never heard of it the first place we look is Pearlmans. A must for anyone in the cigar business and a bargain at $12! Also includes interesting information and facts about tobacco growing, curing, rolling, etc.
Product Description
June 2007 issue of Cigar Aficionado. Cover story is "Cuba Tomorrow."
Customer Reviews:
They don't know fake cuban cigars if they saw one!.......1999-06-15
Nice book; however, I am surprised the editor of "Cigar Aficionado" would let a fake Cohiba Esplendido appear as the genuine article on page 30 of the book! He claims to know his stuff, but the fake is obvious to anyone who knows what a true Cohiba looks like! (Hint: look at the band.) The Cohiba robusto on page 38 appears more authentic. Sorry, but I have assigned a two-star de-merit for Mr. Shanken's editorial sloppiness!
As usual, Cigar Aficionado does it again........1999-01-09
Maintaining the very high standards set by Cigar Aficionado (CA) is not always easy. However, this book follows that fine tradition. While certainly not intended to be a cigar mavens "bible," it does an exellent job of reviewing several different categories of cigar art. From cigar lighters to ashtrays and humidors, to name only a few, Art of Cigars makes a great coffee table book. As with all other CA works, this book is packed with fantastic photography. A perfect complement to its predecessor, World of Cigars, also a CA publication, the serious cigar smoker should not be without it.
