    Book Description

Congratulations! You own or are about to own one of the most distinguished breeds of the twentieth century, the American Pit Bull Terrier. Your dog is automatically feared and respected by other people, and it's up to you to be his caretaker and ambassador.

This book will help you do both-and more. In the caretaking department, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you everything you need to know about feeding your dog from puppyhood to old age. It will explain grooming essentials, like trimming toenails, cleaning ears, checking teeth, brushing and bathing. It will describe basic health concerns, from vaccination schedules to flea control to what to do in an emergency.

As for being an ambassador for your breed, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you all sorts of fun facts about the Pit Bull's history so you can boast about your dog and help people understand him for who he really is. Did you know The Little Rascals' devoted companion, Petey, was a Pit Bull? Or that the Pit Bull was the symbol of American strength and courage during World War I? It's true; the Pit Bull was once the all-American dog, a companion cherished for his excellent way with children, his playfulness and his doggy demeanor. In most homes, he still is. But it's also true that today Pit Bulls are associated more with crime than with companionship.

The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier celebrates the breed for the kind of dog it is with the right owners. A dog with physical and mental stature whose intelligence, charm and energy make him a superb friend, fellow athlete and playmate.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading.......2006-05-17

Unlike some reviews I have read. I am not going to criticize this author for what I think she doesn't know or what I think she should have wrote, or how she should have done this or that, or said this or that. To these people I say, when you write a book on the subject and have it published then you can run your mouth.

This book is a must read. People need to know where these dogs come from and what they where bred to do. To fully understand this gladiator among dogs. I believe that to truly have a healthy respect and admiration for this breed you need to read a book like this and others like it, that go more into depth of the history, and such. This book is for light reading, in my opinion a brief introduction into the breed. As well as being filled with advice on training this breed, heath and nutritional needs of dogs in general. I recommend it for people who want to bring a Pit into their life and their home. As with every dog you should research before you get an animal of and type. These are not dogs for everyone. If you can't be a strong leader in the eyes of a lesser dog. Do not bother with a Pit.

This book gives a good idea of what you will be dealing with. Simply put. A very strong, Terrier, which means he'd rather train you. After reading this book I looked at my bully much different and saw him in a new light. Never have I been afraid of him, but never have I had more admiration and respect for him. These dogs are not like the standard poodle next door that retrieved fowl from the water. Their job was to fight for their lives. One which they have excelled at. Every thing about them reflects this. They posses qualities no other dog can touch. No wonder they were chosen as mascot for the U.S. Marines.

I know we can't all agree about whether or not detailed material on "blood sports" bull, bear baiting, and dog fighting should be included in books. Though the presence of this topic does not make the writer Pro- dog fighting. But the fact is, that is what these animals where bred for, it WAS there sole purpose. Dog fighting today is, YES, cruel and inhumane. It NO longer has its place in society. But it hasn't always been that way. It states in this book that in the 1500's Queen Elizabeth herself entertained guests at her court with bull and bear baiting. This is also something many people out there need to come to terms with. In order to have a firm grip on the nature, the personality, and the characteristics of this breed. I feel that this is all information that should be read. By people who are blessed with a bully and those who seek to be blessed, even people who think this breed is a monster. They all need to read these books. Simply by reading this material you can understand what is not an acceptable behavior for this breed. For example...Pit Bulls should not be people aggressive. If the breeders of fighting dogs wouldn't have one on their property that would show aggression toward a person, then why is that what people now expect from these animals. Simple. Stupid people are in possession of dogs with poor, unstable temperaments not necessarily with the intention of ever entering a dogfight are breeding them with dogs of the same quality. Thus producing dogs that shouldn't have been born in the first place. Crating these so-called media monsters.

In conclusion this book brings a wealth of knowledge to the table of anyone willing to be enlightened on this famed, feared and dreadfully misunderstood canine survivor. I urge everyone to read books like this before you bring a Pit into your life. I also hope that instead of supporting the get rich breeders from our local newspapers, who are hurting this breed, consider rescuing one of these wonderful animals. For every 600 Pit Bulls in shelters every day only 1 will find a home. Please help heal the wounds humanity has inflicted on these canine saints.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate APBT Book!.......2005-08-27

Forget the B/W pictures! This is the real ultimate APBT book! if you have any questions about owning a pitbull, this book can answer them all. It also has brief history of pitbulls, not much but if you want a deep history, it won't be fit in just a chapter.
A very useful book, you will open it again... and again... and again!

3 out of 5 stars A Warning About This Book.......2004-01-02

Do not, I repeat, do not purchase this book if you already own "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The American Pit Bull Terrier" or "The Essntial Pit Bull" because you will find that you are only purchasing another edition (with a little bit more information added) of a book you already own. I opened up this book once in Barnes and Noble and was quite supprised to find that I was really reading another book I had sitting at home on my bookshelf!!

However, if you do not own the two books I mentioned go ahead and buy this book. While it is not the best book written on Pit Bulls it is worth a read if you are not too interested in really diving into a deep understanding of the breed. This book is geared toward the pet owner who is more interested in learning how to take care of their dog.

If you really want to bite into an education on American Pit Bull Terriers then read these books: "The Working Pit Bull" by Diane Jessup, "The Truth About The American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Straton, "The World of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "The Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "This is the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Louis B. Colby and Diane Jessup, "The American Pit Bull Terrier Handbook" by Joe Stahlkuppe, "Gladiator Dogs" by Dr. Carl Semencic, and "Fighting Dog Breeds" by Dr. Dieter Fleig

5 out of 5 stars Very Good, Useful and Easy Reading.......2002-02-27

I was doing research about pit bull books and I came up with this one. I found it very useful. Very good info about the origins of the breed, tips on obedience training...and good photos. It has worked a lot for me since I'am a recently pit bull owner. This book was just what I was looking for. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, well balanced book.......2001-04-30

The book does a pretty good job describing the temperment of the breed w/o portraying the dog as an angel, which many of the other books I've seen seem to do. Has some breed-specific training advice as well, not just basic training for someone who's never owned a dog before.

    4 out of 5 stars Simple & Sweet.......2006-12-29

This book is wonderful for those who are into puppies in general. This is a great learning guide for children, or people of any age that can appreciate the playful innocence of young pups. This book as an informative reference falls somewhat short, but gives a decent overview of each breed. Each page has a generous amount of pictures of a specific breed of puppy, then a picture of the corresponding breed as an adult, which is nice. The photographs are well taken and the silly poses the puppies fall into will definitly draw a smile or laugh from any reader. It's undeniably adorable and a fun book to have on the shelf. Caution: this book will create an overwhelming desire to buy a dog! ;)

4 out of 5 stars good puppy stuff, ignore the zoolgist.......2005-03-14

The information about the various puppies is fairly simple and probably a good start for deciding which breeds to look into.

    The pictures are excellent.

The text by "Tadaaki Imaizumi, zoologist" makes me question whether the person actually has a degree. Unlike the authors claims, dogs do indeed share morphological traits with wolves, seeing as how dogs technically share some morphological traits with humans.

The information about raising puppies at the back of the books is also fairly helpful.

If children are reading the book, especially ones interested in dogs and wolves, parents may need to explain that, contrary to what the book seems to imply, dogs are indeed canids. Not just descended from them but are actually in the Canidae family.

5 out of 5 stars Following in the pawprints of "Legacy of the Dog"..........2004-12-28

Several years ago I bought "Legacy of the Dog"; yesterday, I bought "Legacy of the Puppy," having instantly recognized it as the follow-up to the first--same style, same beautiful glossy book, another picture of a terrier on the cover (this time Airedale instead of Irish). The primary reason I like this book is that it's a good one to coo over with your dog-loving friends; normally we don't get to see much of what all these breeds look like as puppies. At least, not all in one book. Not as many breeds are represented, but with over 200 pages, enough of them are, and not all are AKC-recognized. Basically, every set of pages shows pictures of a mother dog with a variety of beautiful, representative-of-breed puppies around with their ages next to them; most of the breeds follow this general format. The text is essentially the same as you'd find in any dog-breed book but is useful nonetheless; I haven't found major errors in it so far. The text also centers, of course, around the puppies of each breed but also covers what they will likely grow up to be and what to expect. Also, it includes new features like words from actual owners of each puppy breed, offering insight into what it's like to really live with one, & a handy 'diseases by breed' chart.

Looking through these pages and choosing a puppy based on which one you think is cutest is NOT the way to do it and not what the book's intended for, but when used responsibly, or just for fun, it's a great book. The maltese, Great dane, and Brittany puppies look just like my current dogs when they were tiny. My very favorite breeds--afghan hounds, borzois, salukis, and Bedlington terriers--are all represented. The book is wonderful for seeing the whimsy and curiosity of young puppies. Some of the pictures are truly excellent; the little border collies and beagles and Irish setters, for instance, are gorgeous. The Dachshunds are portrayed in a variety of uncommon and common colors, including my favorite adorable long-haired brown and blue merle combination. The Lakeland terrier 'group shot' looks like they're all smiling. One of the 55-day-old Akita puppies looks like Angel from "Lady and the Tramp 2," proving how seeing the puppy version of a breed can change your perception of how a dog will look full-grown; I'd never considered her an Akita pup before! The husky pups have sapphire blue eyes, the Shiba Inus play with pinecones, one of the French bulldogs has the greatest expression on, the Bichons and Schipperkes are precious--well, they all are, ne?

This book is the ultimate look at the cute, happy playfulness of puppies. The kind you leave out and guests will want to go through. It's great, I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book on dogs with beautiful photographs.......2007-01-05

This is one of the best books about dogs that I have read so far. There are beautiful photographs of each breed of dog on each page, with detailed information about that breed of dog. There is also information on feeding, bathing, buying the right dog, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Very good photography ... solid value ..........2001-06-11

Calling this the Ultimate Dog Book maybe just overstating it a little bit ... But it is nevertheless a very good book ... The book comes well bound, with good paper and very good colour separation and printing ... Excellent coffee table type book ...

Barron's Encyclopaedia of Dog Breeds probably carries more text and information of each breed, while the New Encyclopaedia of Dogs (B.Fogle) features more breeds, but the photography in this book is visibly better ...

The book does however provide a general over-view of the breeds featured.

Not the kind of book, if you are into detailed information, but will please all who wish to know a little about each breed and enjoy just looking at great photographs ...

    Solid overall value ...

I have owned this book since 1991 and can't imagine being a dog owner without it! Beautifully formatted with color pictures and easy to understand descriptions. Not only is this a complete guide to each breed, but it also gives the history of canines. Everything you need to have a general knowledge of can be found in the back of the book; from grooming tools and techniques to the mating cycle. My favorite dog book since 1991!!!

              4 out of 5 stars out standing.......2004-02-19

I have always ben interested in mastiffs, this was the first publication that I have purchased, and I was pleased with its different approach to mastiff keeping.
The only fault that I could find was on adivising people not to take in a rescued Neo,which I found to be ill founded from my own personal experience with this wonderful breed.
Overall a well written book, with personal expereinces, which made it funny at times. Although I do wish that there were books that covered bloodlines with pictures covering five generations at least.

4 out of 5 stars Leaving something out.......2003-02-22

This book is a must read for the person who is thinking of acquiring a mastiff breed for the first time! But, I must say, that I had already narrowed my choice down to the Dogue De Bordeaux, and the information on this breed was very sparce! I am most concerned about temperment, and how these dogs will get along within a family environment with other animals. The crux of the information dealt with health problems (which, of course, is important!), and the history of the dogue. It is very apparent that the author has had experience with the Bullmastiff and Neopolitan, as these breed descriptions are the most comprehensive. I wish that the breed bios had not been so biased! As information on the Dogue is almost nonexistant, I was hoping that this book would offer something more!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing-this book is only OK.......2001-09-09

I really looked forward to getting this book but when I finally settled down with it I was disappointed. It lacks real depth and it DEFINITELY lacks breadth. This book should be titled "Random Facts and Vague Histories of Some Molosser Breeds". The book has left out WAY too many breeds to deserve its title. Many of the sections were lacking substance, especially the Fila Brasileiro, Tibetan and Spanish Mastiff sections. The author did do a good job covering the Mastiff and Bullmastiff, but there is a ton of literature out there already on those breeds. More focus on the rarities please!

              3 out of 5 stars Reader........2000-01-16

I liked this book for the vast amount of pictures that it had to offer. I was amazed to see the many different types of Mastiff's that there were. If you are trying to decide on the type that you are wanting, or if you want to know more on the different types, this would be the book for you. It comes with a brief history of each breed, along with discriptin of each. It doesn't go into great detail about health problems that Mastiff's have to deal with, so I would recommend that once you have decided to purchase a Mastiff of your own, that you buy a book also specifically for your type breed. This is my coffee table book. It comes out every time guest's are at my house.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, However.......1999-10-27

It did leave out several Mastiff breeds that are hard to find published literature on.Maybe Douglas Oliff will catch other breeds next time. His other Mastiff book,"The Mastiff and Bullmastiff " handbook, is also very good.

                Book Description

Fostoria was a most remarkable glassd company and George Sakier(1897-1988) was a most remarkable designer of Fostoria glass. For over fifty years, through the Great Depression, Sakier sent classic and modern designs to Moundsville, West Virginia, where millions of delightful glass objects were produced. They appear here in profusion. The book includes a throughly researched text about the man and his art(paintings, industrial designs and glass), as well as hundreds of brilliant color photographs of thousands of Fostoria glass items of many patterns and Sakier's fascinating oil painting landscapes. Sakier's Fostoria glass is American Art Deco design and the book is a fine resource for glass collectors.
