I just love cats. If it weren't for this book I wouldn't of found any of our kittens' breeds. This lists down probably every breed of cat there is, except wild and extinct cats that is. I would say this is the best cat encyclopedia I've read. I would recomend this book to any cat breeder out there.

Great book. A good amount of information. I bought the book after adopting a Maine Coon mix kitten and was a little confused by the statement that she wasn't meant for indoor living!

4 out of 5 stars Quite a Good Guide.......2002-12-06

Cat books are far less common than dog guidebooks, and this is quite a good example of the genre. Each breed is shown in one or more pictures (usually showing different color variations), described in fairly detailed text, and summarized in a table describing physical attributes, coat care, and temperment.
The book is divided into sections by coat length; long hair, semi-long hair, and short hair. A brief section at the end discussing breeding and raising kittens.

A few minor quibbles: the book was originally published in England, so while it does talk about American CFA standards, the emphasis is on British standards -- and more coverage is given to breeds common in England, with less given to American breeds.
They also note that some breeds (Maine Coons, for example) are 'freedom loving' and not suited to be kept indoors. Most responsible breeders/owners would argue that ALL cats, regardless of breed, are better off indoors, or if permitted out, still kept under control with fence or leash.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!.......2007-09-16

I own and I've read this book from cover to cover several times -- it's a very well written and accurate book on purebred and mixed breed cats, a bargain for the price. The preface is an excellent intro to a book about purebred cats, and also includes thoughtful and well-balanced coverage of both points of view regarding the overpopulation problem and the role pedigreed cats play (and don't play) in it. When you don't take parts of the preface out of context it makes valid points. People SHOULD think long and hard before embarking on breeding any kind of cat, and even one unplanned or unwanted litter IS too many. Below is the entire preface:

"To us cat lovers, nothing is more natural than loving our feline friends for their grace, beauty, independent personalities, and myriad other attractive qualities. The fascination of cats is hard to define -- if you are a cat lover, you understand, if you are not, no amount of mere words could intrigue you. Since you are reading this, I have to assume that you are acquainted with the charm and joy of having a feline companion.

In the six years that I've been researching and profiling pedigreed breeds, I've developed a real love for these beautiful and intriguing cats. Exploring their histories, personalities, and myriad colors, patterns and fur types have been a personal journey into the mystery and magic that is the feline. In this book I'll try to share that journey with you.

The fascination with purebred cats is easy to understand since these beautifully colored and coated examples of the species seem to legitimize our feelings about felines. It's natural to want others to look at our beloved kitties with as much admiration as we do ourselves. These cats, with their colorful coats, histories, and temperaments, fascinate the novice and experienced cat fancier alike. Still, the cat fancy -- the common term used to describe the people involved with showing or breeding cats -- has become so much more than that. For many of those involved, it's a way of life -- a community of people dedicated to breeding, showing, and loving cats.

We must remember, however, that purebred cats comprise only an approximate five percent of the total cat population in the United States today, and cat lovers are of two minds when it comes to our feline friends. In one camp, cat lovers wish to retain their right to breed the cats they have worked so hard to protect, promote, and perfect. In another, cat lovers watch helplessly as an endless tide of equally beautiful and worthy cats are euthanized because there aren't enough homes for them all. Do purebred breeds contribute to the overpopulation problem? Yes. Would the overpopulation problem go away if all purebred breeding stopped tomorrow? No. Purebreds make up too small a percentage. It will take an effort on the part of all of us cat owners to put an end to what is most certainly a national tragedy. I offer this book as a modest tribute to the lovely purebred and random-bred members of the species Felis catus, and urge that you think long and hard before you decide to breed cats -- pedigreed or otherwise. Even one litter is too many."

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but some questionable statements.......2007-01-15

This is a great cat book for cat lovers of all types. The history, personality and conformation of each of the breeds is comprehensive and well-researched. The writing is always clear and easy to read. And the photos, though small, are exceptional in capturing beautiful poses, color patterns and expressions of the different cats. The book also gives some insight into the world of cat associations, which was a refreshing surprise.

Unfortunately, the book is somewht marred by the conflicting views stated in the author's own preface. In the final paragraph, she claims that purebreed cats contribute to the overpopulation problem. Yet, with only a little research, it can be ascertained that purebred cats contribute little or nothing toward the overpopulation problem. On the question of breeding, the author "urges you to think long and hard before[you]decide to breed cats - pedigreed or otherwise. Even one litter is too many." Even one litter is too many? Where does she think that the cats in her book have come from? While this may be sound advice in many contexts, it has no place in a book devoted to exploring cat breeds. I can't help but wonder if the author shouldn't have thought longer and harder before accepting payment on a project which apparently conflicts with her moral views!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the dog breed book.......2005-05-16

I have to agree with another reviewer, if you get the dog breed book first, then you're likely to be disappointed in the cat breed book. In my opinion, it's still one of the best cat breed books out there.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre photos.......2004-07-21

I had previously bought Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, and was looking forward to the same sort of large, high quality photos in the cat encyclopedia. Boy, was I disappointed! The photos are small (average size is 2 1/2 X 3 1/2). Some are murky or dark. Some are against poorly chosen backgrounds (e.g. a dark cat against a dark background). Some are mislabeled. (The largest photo of a Siamese is clearly NOT a Siamese.) And speaking of Siamese, they get so wrapped up in trying to show the difference between Traditional and Extreme that they never bother to show photos of all or even most of the colorpoints. (i.e. Sealpoint, Lilac Point, etc.) All in all, the photos are better in one of those $2.49 pamphlets that you buy at your local pet store!

5 out of 5 stars A must for the pet lover.......2003-04-30

I am a dog lover, and purchased this book for my sister in law. When it arrived, I practically read it from cover to cover. I had no idea there were so many breeds of cats, almost all my experience with them has been with the good old "domestic short hair" variety. So, even a dog lover at heart LOVED this book, now I want my own copy!

5 out of 5 stars Cats.......2006-05-25

It was only within the last 10 years that I fell in love with cats. Until then, I was afraid of them and didn't like them near me. Then I was asked to care for someone's cats as they had to go away and so I promised to feed them. That was it! I am hooked. If you love cats, as I now do, or are just curious about them, then you will love this book. It is a beautifully presented, 476 page book, on excellent quality, glossy paper, packed with colour photographs of every cat you can imagine and then a whole lot more! The text is well written and the print easy to read. The content covers cat care and cat breeds. If every book I ordered were of this quality, I would be very happy indeed. There is just one thing; I wish that the book had gone more in depth into Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS)which is quite a common killer of cats. Information on that can be found on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars for anyone who loves their cat.......2001-07-17

All cat lovers will treasure this book. I fell in love with it because of the fantastic pictures and easy to follow prose. The book covers everything about cats - the evolution of cats, the treatment they have received from man throughout the ages, practical cat-care guidelines, and a review (with pictures!) of cat breeds. I never tire of reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, in-depth description of all aspects of the cat.......1998-07-09

Dr. Fogle provides detailed information about the cat in many areas: historical, cultural, scientific, social, et cetera. The scientific detail he provides about the cat is amazing: he provides descriptions of the nervous system, digestive system, skeletal system, etc. He also writes about each breed of cat and habits specific to that breed. This is a must read for anyone who loves cats!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better...................2003-10-06

I feel that although Alice Rhea presents alot of good, common-sense ideas from her long association with cats (hers included) and their owners, she falls short in some parts of this book when it comes to judging the cause or the solution to some of the behaviors mentioned.

Her "if-all-else-fails" attitude of locking a cat inside a carrier for the night (and placing the carrier in another room) is, in my opinion, downright ABUSIVE, CRUEL, and traumatic for the cat. Even if the carrier were big enough for a litterbox, and at least a dish of water (which kitty could tip over in his frantic efforts to get out), it would still be cruel. When getting out of bed in the middle of the night, what are the odds that the cat owner will GENTLY place the cat in the carrier???? And once kitty is locked up in this jail cell of a carrier, suppose there was a fire, or an equally urgent emergency that would cause the residents to leave the home abruptly -- what would happen to kitty, locked up in a carrier in a remote part of the house or garage??? Whether remembered and or forgotten, kitty stands to lose its life!!!!

And although she makes a good point about "Bad Breath" (may be a sign of serious dental disease), she doesn't pick up this thread in the "Messy Eater" section -- messy eating could also be a sign of diseased gums or teeth.

"Bed Lying on" does not even mention the SIMPLEST approach to keeping or getting cat hairs off the bed (in addition to locking the cat out of the bedroom buit NOT in a carrier) -- 1) Daily Brushing and 2) daily use of lint rollers, available in any drug store or pet store. My 3 cats, two of whom are longhaired (and who love being brushed every day) are welcome on my bed -- and so is the lint roller.

I was disappointed with those specific parts of the book -- with all those years of contact with cats and cat owners (and being, herself a multi-pet owner), Ms. Rhea did her readers (many of them not familiar with cat behavior) a disservice in those specific areas of her book, by not pursuing a less abusive way of dealing with these problems.

    4 out of 5 stars Help with a smile.......2003-06-24

This book brought a lot of smiles and laughs of recognition. As the "pets" of 2 homebound felines, we gained a world of understanding about how our companions viewed us and our shared home. The startle-can trick works wonders for keeping cats off furniture, even when we "alpha-cats" are not around. Handy habit-troubleshooting guide and clear explanations of what underlies the behavior. Have already shared the book with other cat-companions and they are getting their own copies for continued future reference.

4 out of 5 stars Good Owners, Bad Habits.......2001-01-05

All in all, a fantastic book! I have recommended this book to tens of people already ... if you want clear, common sensical and effective ways of (re)training your kitty or want to understand why your cat is peeing in your bed/lounge/laundry ... then this is the book for you. Yes, it is written in a simple, good natured way, but if you are actually willing to put to work the advice given, it is a god-send. This is not a book for people who want a quick-fix, sell me a pill type solutions!! All the recommendations in here work - I have two living examples - but they all take some effort and time ...

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2000-09-24

I wanted so much more from this book. I felt that the information contained was mainly common sense, and the writing seemed to be aimed toward a small child. Not only that, but the quality of this print is pretty bad - cheap paper and binding. There are so many better books out there, with creative and innovative techniques described that WORK. My kitties required that I try another title: "Is Your Cat Crazy?: Solutions from the Casebook of a Cat Therapist" by John C. Wright. I found this title to be much more helpful.

I gave this book two stars because a child might benefit from it, or even just someone who simply has not spent much time around cats.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about your cat...in simple terms.......1999-04-17

Being the "protector and slave" of 8 cats, I thought I had a fair amount of knowledge on how to deal with feline behavior! I had also read a large number of books over the years on the subject. However, I was really surprised at how useful Alice Rhea's book is and how much more I have learned about cats from it. A huge variety of problems are answered in the book in a clear and simple style which outlines the problem, explains why it happens, suggests ways of stopping it, and details how to stop it from ever happening in your household. Ms. Rhea writes in a most entertaining way and obviously is a great cat lover. I have recommended this book to many friends, including to experienced cat breeders. It is a most comprehensive book at a bargain price. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK ON VARIOUS BREEDS OF CATS.......2001-02-20

If you are looking for a special breed of cat, this is an excellent book to read before you decide what furry little friend is right for you. All the most popular breeds are discussed and appear in alphabetical order. The book provides information regarding characteristics pertinent to each breed, their origins, special problems pertaining to each breed, colours found in each breed, which ones require more grooming, which ones have a mild, passive manner by nature, and which ones tend to be more active and assertive.

If you are not experienced in raising or showing purebred cats, you will probably be surprised at the number of breeds in existence. The personalities of cats are as wide and varied as those of humans and each is unique in its own special way. There are a variety of similar cat books on the market but some are quite expensive. The book gives you the basic information you will need to choose your loveable companion, with beautiful coloured photographs of each breed. This delightful factfinder guide comes at an affordable price and makes a nice addition to your library.
