Book Description
Hoof care is critical to every horse owner. "The Sound Hoof" demystifies what every owner, trainer, and equine healthcare provider wants to know about current trimming and shoeing practices so that they can make informed decisions for their horses. Lancaster takes a pragmatic approach toward the emerging field of holistic hoof care, a subject that is being heatedly discussed in the equine community by documenting the latest science available regarding a balanced, healthy hoof and horse.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-08-31
The book has a nice Intro to anatomy section, & there is really good information sprinkled throughout. However I find some of the advice in the book unrealistic.
Encourages the reader to have their farrier "justify" the farriers techniques. For example if I were to tell my farrier not to square the toe because the white line determines the shape of the foot, he would pack up his tools & leave! I'm sure on his way out he would tell me if I know so much about my horses' feet then I ought to trim them myself!
Also encourages reader to try & have their farrier experiment with "other" techniques. I feel it's unlikely the typical farrier is willing to "re-invent the wheel," in order to learn new techniques. None the less ones recommended from his client.
This book is also a bit "wishy-washy." It places doubts on theories or some aspect of theory because it was not micro-analyzed under a microscope in a laboratory controlled situation. Yet proof has been evident out in the field. This "wishy-washy-ness" may leave some readers confused.
Working with the "professionals" is all well & fine, but many of us have been stuck in the proverbial farrier/vet loop for far too many years already without answers. Get educated on the mechanical functions of the hoof via Jaime Jacksons "Horse Owners Guide to Natural Hoof Care." With that knowledge you should be able to make conscious decisions about your hoof care, regardless where you stand. Your dollar is better spent on the Jaimes book.
No Hoof No Horse.......2006-08-01
This book should be required reading for all horse owners. It is well researched and well written by an author who knows the subject matter very well not only from books, veterinary articles, and personal research, but also from working as a farrier. Whether your horse is shod or barefoot, the information regarding the internal structures of the horse's hoof and lower leg, proper trimming to keep those structures in good alignment, and the timing between trimming is vitally important for all horses to maintain soundness over thier lifetimes. Too many horses' lives end early because of owner ignorance about hooves and how to care for them properly.
Gallop away.......2005-10-11
Ugh. What a sham this book is. The title suggests that this would be a fantastic source in learning to properly care for your horse's hooves, and thus, their soundness. Who wouldn't need a book like this? Don't fall for it. This book is largely a preachy rant about "natural" hoof care. If you're not one of the 15 people who practice "natural" hoof care and need an explanation, here goes: "Natural" hoof care is the misguided idea that horses, no matter what breed, discipline, athletic ability, job, age, soundness or geographic location, will be the most sound with NO shoes, as this is their natural state and they have thrived this way until their domestication. This would really make sense if what we did with our horses was "natural," but let's be realistic. Jumping, cutting, dressage, driving and polo are not "natural" equine activities. Neither is stall confinement, turnout in limited space, performing on sand based footing surfaces, and so on. Sure, there are a select number of performance horses who can excel without shoes, but they are exceptions, not the norm, and were probably born with fantastic hoof genes. If you have a backyard pleasure horse or a trail horse, this may work for you. I did give it 3 stars because the information provided is well written, well researched, and accompanied with appropriate diagrams and pictures. I do, however, not agree with the notion that natural hoof care can work for the majority of performance horses. If you're looking for hoof care books, try Shoeing Right, Well-Shod, or if you're really ambitious, Principles of Horseshoeing.
Excellent resource for horseowners!.......2005-09-19
I have read a lot of books on the topic, but I have yet to read a better introduction into horse hooves and hoof care. Sadly, more horse owners than not, who read and comprehend this book will finish it knowing more about their horses' hooves than their farriers. It is a short 114 page, concise, easy to understand informational guide into the complex and perfect design that is a hoof. An excellent gift for anyone with an interest in "healthy" horses. Their horses will thank you for it too!

Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking photography - good content.......2007-01-19
The cover of this book caught my eye. As much as I love the technologically advanced new era of Ferrari, I have a warm spot in my heart for the older cars, both race and road.
The photographs in this book are outstanding. Many are from angles that catch the beautiful handiwork wrought by the craftsmen of these early machines. There is no effort to hide the effects of age on these great machines. On the contrary, there are photographs of the fuel tanks, filler caps, camshaft covers and suspensions with spots of rust and the dings of use evident in most of them.
Rather than detracting from the cars, these photos add life to them. Most of the examples in this book are in lovely shape, but many have not been completely restored - actually a great thing.
Two things may keep this from being your favorite Ferrari book. First, it contains mostly race or race/GT cars. It is not an exhaustive catalog of all Ferrari models from inception to date. Secondly, certain cars only have 1 or 2 pictures and these may not be from the most encompassing angle. Other have 6-8 photos including the classic side shot. This may be a bit frustrating for some readers, especially those not fully familiar with all the models.
The models include 375 F1, 500 F2, 375 PLUS, 750 Monza, 250 GT Tour de France, 315S/335S, 250 GT California, 250 Testa Rossa/58, 250 Testa Rosse/59, 250 GT SWB, 196 SP/246 SP, 250 GTO, 250 LeMans, 275 GTB/GTC, Dino 206S, 330 P3/412 P, 512 S/512 M, 312 PB, 512 BB LM, F40/F40 LM, F333 SP, 212 E Montagna, 312 T5 Formula 1.
The text in each section describes the racing history of each model and gives a technical description. I found a few misspellings in the first two chapters (all I have read so far) but these may be a result of translation.
Overall a handsome book that I would not hesitate to put on the coffee table. It is sure to start a conversation.

This book provides great advice and understanding of basic negotiation from the female angle. It also provides excellent guidance on some key specific negotiation situations. I bought this specifically for my nephew who has asked for it for Christmas for the last two years, however that doesn't mean that I didn't look at it first. It truly is a beautiful calendar with cars not just from yesteryear but also concept cars and current models. I would recommend this calendar for anyone not just those interested in cars in general but also for lovers of sleek car bodies and impressive lines.

Great Bedtime.......2007-10-01
My 1 1/2 yr old daughter absolutely loves this story. At first I wasn't sure it would fly, but we borrowed it from the library and we both quickly fell in love with it. We ended up getting our own copy and every night she wants to read it. The story stimulates the imagination. The sounds and rhythm make it a very soothing and sleepy kind of story.
Bedtime book.......2006-08-03
This is definitely a bedtime book because it is sooo dull and boring to read. Neither my 21 month old nor my 4 1/2 year old took any real interest in this book. Skip it and pick one of Thacher Hurd's better books like Cat's Pajamas, Zoom City, Mama Don't Allow or Moo Cow Kaboom.
a perfect bedtime read.......2005-12-06
I borrowed this book from the library for my 2 1/2 yr old son. It's requested not only every night but during the day. The story is a delight to read and the illustrations wonderful, enchanting. I am looking forward to adding this to my son's bookshelf.
Book Description
When Berkeley graduate Eric Ryan was sent by Teach for America to a hardscrabble high school in the heart of North Carolina's NASCAR country, he didn't count on Harold Miller - a big guy with a big laugh and a tarheel accent as thick as sorghum syrup - sticking his head into his class one morning and announcing, "Hey Mr. Ryan, we're gonna build an electric car." Two regional utilities had challenged a group of elite schools throughout the South to design and build battery-powered electric vehicles to be judged during a final contest at NASCAR's Richmond International Raceway. Although Ryan's underprivileged high school was not on the list, Miller managed to squeak them in. With a Ford Escort rescued from the compacter, a few hundred pounds of scavenged golf cart batteries, a local minor league NASCAR driver as coach, and the local constabulary looking the other way as the reborn "Shocker" began careening over back roads on test runs, the kids get their pasted-together dark horse to the big contest in Richmond. Electric Dreams offers drama built on marvelous small-town characters, and a story of never-say-die invention which would make North Carolina's other pioneers, the Wright Brothers, proud.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Book.......2007-03-09
This was a wonderful book. She portrayed Miller & Ryan perfectly. I had the wonderful opportunity of being a member of the NEAT the year after the events in her book took place. She captured every detail perfectly and I was able to relive a wonderful part of my life. Once you pick up this book you will not be able to put it down until you have read the last page!!
An Awsome Read.......2006-10-13
As a member of the EV team at Northamton-East, Caroline Kettlewell made me feel the whole adventure all over again. It was like she took what I saw and felt and put words to it. I am so glad someone told this story, that other people get to read our stugale to the top. If you like to cheer for the underdog you need to read this book. Bryan T Ferguson "the man who drove to the record"
What a wonderful story!.......2006-08-22
I was sent the book by family - maybe because of the NASCAR connection. I started it on a plane trip to the east coast and finished it, with tears in my eyes, on the way home 2 days later. You start pulling for the kids in the story from the start and share all the ups and downs as they meet each challenge that faces them. What we need is more teachers like Eric Ryan! I highly recommend the book for anyone who likes pulling for the underdog.
Synchromesh: Perfect match-up of story and writer.......2006-06-09
How can a story about electric cars bring tears to your eyes, even when you're reading it for the sixth time? Not only is the story riveting, but the writing is a pleasure. As in the works of Tracy Kidder and John McPhee, some authors and stories are made for each other. But neither of those Pulitzer Prize winners ever made me cry. This is a book to be read multiple times - for the inspiration, for the use of words, for the drama, for the joy.
An exciting and true story of determination and true grit.......2005-03-11
Berkeley graduate Eric Ryan's journey to North Carolina to an improvised high school where his encounter with Harold Miller would lead to an electric car's design and development would change his life. Electric Dreams: One Unlikely Team Of Kids And The Race To Build The Car Of The Future documents how an unlikely band of kids would build the car of the future in the heart of NASCAR country, beating the odds to win a high school competition. An exciting and true story of determination and true grit - and fast cars.

Good Pictures, but boring.......2001-09-06
I bought this for my boyfriend for his birthday and he's a car enthusiast. Anyway, I thought it would be a great present but it turns out that it was just way to boring for him. Not very exciting...
good but not great.......1999-07-10
Good but not great This is a good book for the price but not as good as I had hope. First, the good parts. This book has a lot of color photos(around 900)and it does cover a lot of cars(Mclaren, Ferrari, Porsche, NSX, Lamboghini, BMW, Lotus, Viper, Corvette, Mercedes, De Loren, Jaguar,...). Unfortunately, that is the biggest reason why I didn't like it. Because it covers so many cars it spends very little time on each car(about 2-4 pages for each manufactures NOT each cars, noted exception is the Ferrari section which is 12 pages BUT for 7 different Ferrari). The other major problem is that it has many cars that nobody would consider as DREAM CARS(Jeep, Camaro, Renault Espace and Twingo - both are VANS!!, Miata, Peugeot 205GT1, Volkswagon Golf! Give me a Break!). This could have been a great book IF they had focus on real dream cars and go into detail. Lets say 5+ pages for EACH cars rather then each automaker. I'm tempted to give this book 2 stars instead of 3. A good book for the Beginner car enthusiest but for the rest of us - better to spend more money on a better book.
