Based on the work of Samuel Wendell Williston and Dr. W. K. Gregory, author and editor of the original title published in 1925, this volume consists of two major portions -- a structure-by-structure account of the reptile skeleton, followed by a classification of the various reptile groups based on osteological characters. It was designed to give in outline form an account of the nature of the skeletal system of numerous reptile types living and extinct.

Starting off as a mere revision of Samuel Williston's 1925 book and turning into a full blown rewrite, Alfred S. Romer's The Osteology of the Reptiles is still the most comprehensive book on this subject ever written. This book features 707 pages (excluding bibliography & index) of information on the wide variety of osteological features found in the reptilia, with notes on how they evolved and their possible evolutionary roots.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part, and by far the most useful, is that on the osteology of all the known reptilia. Romer starts off with a quick intro into the muscular, cardiovascular and nervous systems of the reptilia along with how it affects the skeleton and then dives head first into the wide variety of osteology found in this amazing group. He divides the skeleton into various parts (e.g. skull, axial, limb girdles etc.) and goes at it from there. To keep the book from becoming too humongous, Romer focuses on representatives of each major order. What one is left with is a well documented piece of work that makes a wonderful reference book for those interested in reptiles and a must have for any budding herpetologist, zoologist or vertebrate paleontologist.
The second part of the book is Romer's classification and systematic grouping of all the members of the reptilia. He continues to be very extensive as he brings relationships all the way down to the family level. Still, regardless of how hard he worked on it and how detailed he was, this portion of the book is painfully dated. This is the inevitable fate of all books taxonomical as nomenclature and relationships continue to change faster than books can be published on them. Romer himself knew that this would be a problem and admits to it ahead of time in the foreword of the book. And even though Dr. LaDuke attempts to point out areas where names have changed and families have moved (such as the redistribution of the Cotylosauria into many separate groups along with the abandonment of such orders as Eosuchia and Thecodontia) even his changes will one day be obsolete (if they're not already). So the second half, regarding the relationships of the reptilia, is more of a historical piece than anything else.
There are some saving graces to this portion though. For instance, one can see the torture involved in trying to show evolutionary relationships using the standard Linnean taxonomic system. Another one is Romer's attention to detail. Now living in a time where creatures are shown their evolutionary relationships to one another mostly through the simplistic use of most recent common ancestor, it is nice to look back to a time when diagnostic features actually meant something. If one ever wanted to know what makes a python a python or a crocodile a crocodile, Alfred Romer's work will tell you that and then some.
Finally the forward of the book really gives one an idea of just how much attention the reptilia is given as Romer astutely points out when he states that "I am impressed by the fact that we know less about many modern types than we do of many fossil groups."
Nearly half a century later and this statement still rings true.

This book is very helpful tool to determine values and identification of collectible model trains. There are numerous good quality pictures and a very complete listing of models. Valuation of trains are in line with other publications. Very good reference for a collector or a model train dealer.
Excellent, but ..........2006-07-20
The 6th edition is much improved over previous editions, especially with more and clearer pictures. It does have two faults -- almost nothing on pre-war American Flyer accessories (neither did previous editions) and seems to have left out Marx 3/16 scale tinplate cars, a very popular catagory, and which was included in previous editions.

Classic O Gauge Trains.......2007-09-30
This book is well done. It has clear photos, and is super-organized and delightfully written. The U.S. toy train industry grew and changed since the beginning of the 20th Century until the 1960 downturn. This book covers this time period and is a fine cross-section of all the major (and some minor) manufacturers and the history behind them from their genesis, who merged with whom, and who lost out in the long haul. I highly recommend this splendid toy train overview to the many amateur and professional collectors out there who will have a definite interest in this excellent publication. It's author, David Doyle, has researched the subject! From one model train collector to another, get this book. I give it a Fiver!

Like Mr. Doyles other new Lionel train guide for post war trains, the Collector's Guide to Prewar Lionel Trains, 1900-1942 is prove to be an important resource for both the buyer and seller of antique Lionel train sets. Containing information on virtually every toy train made by Lionel between 1900 and 1942, the book will prove to be a gold mine of information. However I found two of the appendices at the end of the book to be of particular value. Appendix I, Awakening Sleeping Toys and Appendix II, Setting Up Your Train each contain information important to the collector. There is also a small chapter on Lionel Catalogs and Paper Products and another chapter devoted to Accessories, Toys and Novelties.
All in all this is one you'll want to keep close.

45 RPM Price Guide.......2007-02-06
I have found this to be the most informitive book on 45's that I have ever read. Not only does it give you a guideline on the value of the records in your collection, but it also gives you information on the artists such as other groups the artist has been with and the groups that have changed their names over their careers

With records becoming more and more plentiful, it does lose a little of the obscure stuff it used to carry. However, it is a MUST for any collector!
Just the think you need for a lifetime hobby........2004-07-17
Ever wondered how much one of those 45s you have is worth? Here's the place to look. Not every artist is listed but with every new edition, more are added. I have a first edition which contains over 30,000 or so entries. The reason why I asked what I did above is beacuse if your collection contains older records or records that look just like the day they were first sold, you could probably have a collection worth thousands of dollars. Some songs are available on different labels, ones that are easy to find rather than ones that are rare on other labels. I saw that a near mint copy of "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and the Impressions on the Vee-Jay label is worth $10,000. A very good codition of that record is over $1,000. If someone has something rare like that or colored vinyl, they are lucky!! If this is your hobby whether you've started or it's been with you all your life, you shouldn't be without this book. RECOMMENDED!

I thought this reference book was great. It gives you a ton of information that is helpful when buying used trains. I wish it had more pricing categories.

This book is great for realistic market prices. It has two price listings one for good condition and one for excellent for Postwar and Prewar and excellent and new for everything after 1969. Every listing is in numeric order with era it was made and even list special club cars but no prices
