Product Description

Mesa Verde, with its stunning landscapes and cliff dwellings, evokes all the romance of American archaeology. It has intrigued researchers and visitors for more than a century. But "Mesa Verde" represents more than cliff dwellings—its peoples created a culture that thrived for a thousand years in Southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. Archaeologists have discovered dozens of long-buried hamlets and villages spread for miles across the Great Sage Plain west and north of Mesa Verde. Only lately have these sites begun to reveal their secrets. In recent decades, archaeologists have been working intensively in the Mesa Verde region to build the story of its ancestral Pueblo inhabitants. The Mesa Verde World showcases new findings about the region’s prehistory, environment, and archaeological history, from newly discovered reservoir systems on Mesa Verde to astronomical alignments at Yellow Jacket Pueblo. Key topics include farming, settlement, sacred landscapes, cosmology and astronomy, rock art, warfare, migration, and contemporary Pueblo perspectives.

Book Description

In 2006 Mesa Verde celebrates its first century as a national park. Here, in one of the crown jewels of the national park system, Colorado played a large role in the birth of modern archaeology. But Mesa Verde is not just about archeology and ancient Native American lifeways. This book celebrates the park as a whole: from its surprising eighteenth-century discovery to the establishment of the park thanks to a group of nineteenth-century women to the inspiration it has sparked in the likes of Willa Cather and Ann Zwinger. Beautifully illustrated with historic and full-color photos and filled with modern essays and fascinating historic extracts, Mesa Verde National Park is both a keepsake and a wealth of information on a beloved National Park and World Heritage Site.

4 out of 5 stars You'll want to visit Mesa Verde!.......2006-04-28

(Foreword is by Ben Nighthorse Campbell and dedicated to 24 Native American tribes associated with Mesa Verde National Park, including Hope Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute and numerous other Pueblo Tribes.)

In the foreword, Campbell says that two centuries before Columbus arrived (1200-1300), the Ancestral Puebloans left their stone cities--to be "discovered" later by future generations.

In June 26,1906, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the act that made Mesa Verde a national park, the only park created to preserve archaeological findings. This is their 100th anniversary celebration year.

If you have visited the ancient cliff dwellings, you know how awesome and awe-inspiring they are. Just think: Something built so many centuries ago is available for 21st century eyes. Today humans and the environmental pollution are damaging the structure.

Located at the "four-corner" counties of the Southern Rockies--where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado meet, it is in the same country as the Bryce and Grand Canyons.

Mesa Verde: The First 100 Years coffee table book has photos of people climbing and sitting on the cliff dwellings. I am not sure if that is still allowed, however I did walk there in the early 1970s.

The four-color photos of the area show the cliff dwellings and the beautiful nature that surrounds it. Anal Hall's 1947 photo on page 109 of the Cliff Dwelling is what I remember so well.

The area has long been inspiration for artists and writers. Louis L'Amour even had a New York Times Best Seller that featured the cliff dwellings, Haunted Mesa.

Why did the Puebloans move into the cliff and build there--and why did they leave? No one really knows.

Armchair Interviews says: If you have visited Mesa Verde, you will want this book as a keepsake. If you see this book, you will want to visit Mesa Verde

    Book Description

Originally published in 1988, Mesa Verde National Park: Shadows of the Centuries is an engaging and artfully illustrated history of an enigmatic assemblage of canyons and mesas tucked into the southwestern corner of Colorado. Duane A. Smith recounts the dramatic 1888 "discovery" of the cliff dwellings and other Anasazi ruins and the ensuing twenty-year campaign to preserve them. Smith also details the resulting creation of a national park in 1906 and assesses the impact of more recent developments—railroads and highways, air pollution, and the growing significance of tourism—on the park's financial and ecological vitality. This revised and completely redesigned edition includes more than 50 illustrations and will be enjoyed by readers interested in environmental, Western, and Colorado history.

              Book Description

This comprehensive biography of Gustaf Nordenskiöld by Judith and David Reynolds appears 111 years after his death. It is noteworthy in view of his contributions in different fields: mineralogy, crystallography, arctic exploration, anthropology and scientific photography. Previously known primarily in his home country, Sweden, and in the American Southwest, Nordenskiöld's life and work has deserved broader attention. The Reynolds have placed the achievements of this young scientist in the context of his family and his cultural background. Tragic developments led serendipitously to his meticulous exploration and exquisite documentation of the Mesa Verde culture. An important base for the Reynolds' study is the extensive collection of letters and documents that the family has been pleased to place in the hands of these dedicated and skillful authors. Nordenskiöld, in addition to his monumental study of the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, published a brief popular account in Swedish of his travels in the Far West. His Mesa Verde travel journal was compiled and translated by my father, Dr. Olof Arrhenius, and used by Florence and Robert Lister in their informal publication Stones Speak and Waters Sing. However, the full record of Nordenskiöld's life is presented here by the Reynolds for the first time The Reynolds have matched private sources with far-reaching archival work in Sweden, Finland and the United States. They have rescued these combined historical records from the dust of the past and rendered them as a vivid and captivating life story. The family of my maternal grandfather, Gustaf Nordenskiöld, is deeply grateful to the Reynolds for their achievement and together with the scientific community celebrate the appearance of this biography in 2006, the centennial year of Mesa Verde National Park. -- Gustaf Arrhenius Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California, January 18, 2006

If you're a card collector, this is the book for you. Every set imaginable is listed by card #, example photo, and value. It even shows card set variations. For example, the 1916 Altoona Tribune set is actually the same as the 1916 The Sporting New set with a different back. This has been an invaluable tool in my quest of the complete Pete Rose collection, as well as, giving me a renewed enthusiasm for the players of old.

3 out of 5 stars Beckett Baseball Card Price Guide #25.......2004-03-11

The new layout for the index is very frustrating and not even complete. The last part of the index has been left off. Also, found there are some key sets that aren't listed, such as Donruss Preferred, Topps Gold and many of the Pinnacle sets. They also failed to include some insert sets for key brands. I know this is a hugh undertaking, but they already have the information on their web site...for an additional charge. Despite all the problems, it is still the best price guide on the market. Just hope they do a better job on #26.

If you collect baseball cards you need this book. It's as simple as that!

5 out of 5 stars The ideal price guide for collectors of older baseball cards.......2003-12-13

Beckett's monthly price guides can barely keep up with the baseball cards that are produced each year, let alone all those surplus sets and special collectible cards that are flooding the market. For those of us working on older cards (i.e., pre-Fleer/Donruss) these monthly price guides will give you prices, but are not much help in terms of determining what cards you need to complete your set. So if you are trying to finish up your 1953, 1966, and 1967 Topps sets, then it is necessary for you to know ALL the cards so when you hit the card shows you are prepared for dealers who organized their cards by numbers, players, or random piles. With the "Beckett Baseball Card Price Guide 2003) you have your best shot at finding out exactly what is out there for the set(s) on which you are currently working. In practical terms the prices quoted are going to be more valid the farther back you go, but the key thing about these Price Guides is that they list all the cards, including all the extras, inserts, special sets and the like from Bowman, Diamond Stars, Donruss, Fleer, Goudey, Play Ball, Score, Sportsflics, Topps. Upper Deck and whatever other companies have sprung up that I cannot remember off the top of my head in all their infinite variations. Beckett continues to be the Price Guide I use to put together my want list for the next card show or for checking out on line auctions. This is especially important when a set has numbers missing (it happens), so that you can avoid desperately searching for cards that are not there (e.g., the 1953 Topps set has 274 cards from #1 Jackie Robinson to #280 Milt Bolling). As always, there is also a concise and informative introductory section that will be of use to anyone who considers collecting baseball cards a serious hobby (is there any other kind?).
