Beginner to advance.......2007-07-11
I have used this book for years. I found it easy enough to read and help me through my first few years of dealing with marine tanks. And unlike a lot of my books from the beginning this one did have enough "meat" in it to still be relevant as I progressed through the hobby. Overall the content is great and it covers the gambit of marine life. On a different note, the paper and print is of a really great quality as well. This book takes a lot of use and abuse at my house and it really is still in suprisingly good condition. I only mentions this because some of the "cheaper" aquarium books I have picked up throught the years are all falling to pieces. Hope this helped!
Essential but dated.......2007-06-24
Written by one of the foremost experts in the hobby, this is an essential book for beginner and intermediate marine aquarists. It covers the fundamentals of setting up, stocking and successfully maintaining a saltwater aquarium and does so in a common sense, easy to understand fashion. It is an approachable and well-written primer on the topic and is the best way to get started.
However, the book was written in 1999 and is now 8 years old. Remarkably, that means it is already out-dated given the rapidly evolving state of technology in this hobby. The author, Bob Fenner, frequently provides advice and suggestions to aquarists on an internet website and much of the information in his book is qualified or revised the advice he provides now. For example, he highly recommends that macroalgae calupera in this book but, while still recommending it some setups, cautions people today that this algae is not right for all setups due to a tendancy to take over tanks. Some of the modern trends in saltwater aquariums are also not covered in enough depth -- simply because they weren't a trend eight years ago.
Accordingly, this is a GREAT book to read as you begin your research on setting up a saltwater aquarium. Not only is it a first read, but it is a valuable resource that you will continue to turn to before, during and after setting up your aquarium because it is filled with useful advice. However, it is also advice that should be complimented by additional research with more up-to-date materials.
If Bob is reading this, I'd just like to say this: This book is incredible and I can't thank you enough for writing it. If you have the time, please consider writing a Second Edition -- the hobby would benefit from such an endeavor tremendously. Thanks!
Full of info.......2007-05-07
I bought this for my mom. She enjoys all the color photographs and the helpful information about setting up a saltwater tank. She isn't ready to start one yet but this was the perfect book to help her when she does. She especially appreciated the photographs of the different types of fish which helped her identify those she would like.
The Salt Water Aquarist Bible.......2007-04-10
This reference manual will guide you through the setup of your new salt water aquarium. You'll also find yourself referring back it later on.
Must read for ANYONE who wants to start a marine tank.......2007-04-10
I never write reviews, but this book is so amazing and wonderful that I felt compelled to write one. Book gives excellent and concise advice on all aspects involving the marine aquarium. A must have quick reference that will help you to become the best and most humane marine tank owner.

Dont buy it , waste of money.......2003-12-22
this book was worthless, I am going to try to return it. I was not at all happy, very outdated information and some info I found to be quite incorrect. :(
DO NOT BUY!!!.......2003-08-20
This book is outdated. About all it has of any value is pretty pictures. There are much better books for the beginner out there. I found this out the hard way.
Just a one more book about soltwater aquarium.......2001-07-13
If you are looking for a complete guide, don't pike up this one. I found it good for first time reader, who doesn't know a thing about reef tank, but it doesn't realy help to set up you own.
A good general overview of aquarium keeping.......2001-06-22
there are better books out there, but if you want a nice book to read on saltwater aquariums in general, then this book is quite okay.
Good overview of disease and species; bad for setup.......2000-09-13
I spent months researching marine and reef aquaria for my own involvement as a hobbyist, and this was my first book. While it covers the characteristics of different vertibrates and invertibrates, as well as diseases and basic feeding information, it perpetuates many of the myths which cause so many tank "crashes", specimen deaths and discouraged hobbyists. This book does not address the most successful and widely-used water treatment and filtration methods used today: Protein skimming, live rock and live sand, and sump systems.
The science of marine tank and reefkeeping has changed radically in the past few years, lowering the mortality rate of tank inhabitants and increasing the ease of tank maintenance. This book seems to focus on the out-dated methods, and in several instances, leads the reader to believe that certain animals best left to advanced keepers are suitable for immature systems.
I would recommend this book only if you are "iffy" about starting a tank. It is a decent overview; but if you do take the "plunge", do thorough research first. Pariticipate in online forums, and buy "The Conscientous Marine Aquarist" before even purchasing your tank. You will have a solid foundation to build upon, you'll save money by purchasing the right equipment first, and you'll learn how to correctly cycle your first marine tank. From there, you'll want to pick up more specific and technical books to lead your way.
Book Description
An encyclopedic reference for setting up, stocking, and maintaining a saltwater aquarium.
Nothing rivals the color and appeal of a saltwater aquarium. The
Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium simplifies the complexities of setting-up and maintaining a successful saltwater aquarium.
The book illustrates and explains:
Specific characteristics of invertebrates and marine fish
Important differences between tropical and freshwater fish
Choosing a tank: advantages and disadvantages of glass and acrylic, different shapes, and critical construction details
Accessories such as aquarium heaters, lights, and filters
Water testing and maintaining the correct chemical balance
More than half of the book is a directory that covers species from 34 fish families. Details include their characteristics, natural environment, diet and feeding, size range, and aquarium behavior.
Coldwater aquariums are covered in a separate section that shows how to establish an artificial habitat for fish requiring temperate saltwater.
This full-color reference will appeal to saltwater tropical fish enthusiasts at any level.
Customer Reviews:
Nice reference.......2007-01-10
When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???
Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16
This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.
Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03
We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.
Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13
Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.
Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09
This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.

A book for those curious about starting a marine aquarium........1999-07-04
This is an excellent book for those interested in starting a marine aquarium. I had several questions about the hobby, and it managed to answer all of them. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to describing the various families of fish. It gives a good idea on how difficult each specimen is to care for. However, very few of the descriptions had any pictures of the fish. This book would probably not be useful for those who already have a working aquarium.
Good introduction to saltwater aquariums.......1999-02-09
Good intro. Helpful hints on setting up the aquarium for the first time. Could use more fish pictures and explanation of various types.
Great book, especially for the price!.......1998-10-20
My local marine fish dealer recommended this book when I first began questioning him about saltwater aquariums. As a beginner, I felt like it cleared up a lot of questions I had about the hobby and also provided a lot of information I can use down the road (disease, etc.) As a bonus, I was totally glued to the book until I finished it. The pictures, diagrams, and text really flow well together and keep you interested. I have read several other books about the hobby but always refer back to this one.
Great book for starting your first saltwater aquarium.......1998-02-07
I have just started a saltwater aquarium and checked out a lot of books on the subject. The New Saltwater Aquarium Handbook is definitely the best. Under $10, it offers simple, straight forward detail on setting up the tank, getting fish, and trouble shooting problems.
This is the best beginning saltwater book for the price!.......1997-01-10
This book is one of the best books for the saltwater
enthusiast. It provides great information on the aquarium
and filtration as well as water quality, nutrition and
disease.
It has many great pictures and provides a great start on
understanding the marine aquarium. As a pet shop owner this
is the one book I always recommend for the first time marine
fish keeper.

Book Description
A wonderful collection of linked short stories by this enormously popular bestselling author.
Here are six wonderful short stories about the members of Mr. Speed’s primary school class where lots of the children have something to worry about. From a new stepmom, to coping with math, everyone has their own private concerns and it’s sometimes difficult to discuss them -- even when you need advice. So Mr. Speed sets up the Worry Website on the classroom computer. Anybody in the class can anonymously enter their worry and anyone else can type in advice to help out. Also included is a prize-winning story by a 12-year-old fan who entered a competition to write a companion story to Jacqueline’s.
Customer Reviews:
It is not a terrible book!.......2004-12-23
I noted with apprehension that the previous reviewer condemned this book, saying that the book has no point to the plot.
I would like to redeem the book's worth by highlighting the following points:
1. Each chapter of this book starts off with a 'worry' entered by one of Mr Speed's students. And it is this 'worry', that the entire chapter is based on. The chapter does not take the form of a diary entry, so it is different from books like Anne Frank's diary or Dear Mr Henshaw. It is instead narrative in nature and takes on a first-person perspective from the point of view of the student entering the worry. Hence, it is conversational and 'spoken' in the manner that children of that age would speak in, resulting in many humorous/depressed observations and happenings.
2. From each chapter, you don't just get to know more about the student who entered the worry, you also find out about the other students in the class and other outside characters as well, through the various dialogues and observations from the student.
3. Since information is provided in snippets about various characters from each chapter, there is a great sense of continuity throughout the story. For example, in the first chapter when Holly enters her worry, she mentions characters like Greg and Claire etc. Then in the second chapter, Greg enters his worry, and his character development carries on from where it was left off in chapter 1, expanding the reader's perception of Greg's life. In the process, Greg would also bring the reader to view snippets of other characters, and the same process goes on.
To put it simply, this book is like a collection of short stories of the lives of some of the students in Mr Speed's class. However, it is unlike a usual short stories collection, in the sense that it links all these short stories together - the glue being Mr Speed himself, who tends to appear at the end of every chapter to apply some level of resolution to the short story.
Kudos to Ms Wilson for her skill in writing!

I want to hug them all!.......2003-05-21
If you are looking for a book that combines the history of teddy bears with lots of full color photos of individual bears that is also packed with a lot of interesting facts about each bear (and about bear making in general) then this is the book for you.
I am not a serious teddy bear maker, but I enjoy looking at the myriad of photos of the antique bears and learning more about teddy bear history.
