Book Description

It was 1995, and Mike Lingenfelter was ready for his life to be over. Two serious heart attacks and open-heart surgery had taken away most of the good things that he had in his life. However, his doctors still held out hope for him, and they were still trying to find ways to motivate him to get out of the house and exercise. Their vision was that an energetic dog on a leash might do that for Mike. And so it was that this golden retriever named Dakota, who had been rescued from death himself, came to help Mike with his rehabilitative therapy.

Eventually, Dakota became Mike's protector and his best friend, saving Mike's life several times after somehow learning how to alert Mike of an oncoming heart crises. Dakota gave Mike back his dignity, his pride, and his life. Early on, it became evident to Mike that this wonderful 98-pound, red-haired, four-legged angel had a special gift: Dakota was a spirit guide, and it was Mike's duty to share him and the power of the human-animal bond. Ultimately, as part of that journey, one more miracle was needed, as Dakota fought a courageous and dignified battle for his own life.

5 out of 5 stars More than a story about a man and his dog........2007-02-25

The author rescues a beautiful golden retriever on advice from his doctor to get a dog. The dog however has the ability to alert the author to impending cardiac episodes and in doing so, gives the author the freedom to work and go about his daily life. This book touches the readers soul and lets us know that maybe there is more to the human-animal bond than we know. The book also dicusses the "Americans with Disabilities Act" as it relates to service dogs. Anybody who has loved a dog will love this book.

I could not put this book down. Mike and Dakota's story as a team was inspiring and transcended this world. Their devotion to each other was amazing. You do not have to be an animal lover to learn from this book. My hope would be that after you read this book you will see how special animals are in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and so touching!.......2006-12-19

I recently lost my Golden Angel too, and while I was looking for a book to help
Me cope with my pain, I found this book. I am a very busy person and don't
Have much time to read, but this book took me 2 days. It is full of feelings and even humor. No matter what the situation is, our Golden's will manage to put a smile on our face. When you start reading this book, make sure you have a box of Kleenex
Near by. This book goes into my favorite book list, and I purchased a few more as
Christmas presents.

I Absolutely LOVED this book! MY sister in law bought for my husband --animal lover..so much so he works k-9 for the military...Anyway she bought it for him but I read it first because the cover called my attention. I like dogs but was reluctant to get one because I though of all the work there is involved with taking care of animals..besides with a little one, school, and work a dog would be more work for me....But after reading this book, I know I want a dog..The magic between Mike and Dakota is so overwhelming --that it made me think that that is what we need in our lives..Yea it will be work to potty train and take care of ..but then again things in life that are worth anything sometimes require alot of work--..God Bless you Mike and Dakota and thanks!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most touching stories of the bond between man and his dog........2006-03-14

I enjoyed the book so much. Felt like I was right there with them and every time the author had an attack could visualize how much his Angel/dog helped him through it. They had a bond that is so hard to explain unless you have had an animal and then know what it means, they are not dogs, they are your family and in this case especially he was not only family but his life support and friend. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone, have since bought additional copies to give to my animal lover friends for gifts.

    Book Description

From Connecticut to California, Native American tribes have entered the gambling business, some making money and nearly all igniting controversy. The image of the "casino Indian" is everywhere. Some observers suspect corruption or criminal ties, or have doubts about tribal authenticity. Many tribes disagree, contending that Indian gaming has strengthened tribal governments and vastly improved the quality of reservation life for American Indians.

This book provides the clearest and most complete account to date of the laws and politics of Indian gaming. Steven Light and Kathryn Rand explain how it has become one of today's most politically charged phenomena: at stake are a host of competing legal rights and political interests for tribal, state, and federal governments. As Indian gaming grows, policymakers struggle with balancing its economic and social costs and benefits.

Light and Rand emphasize that tribal sovereignty is the very rationale that allows Indian gaming to exist, even though U.S. law subjects that sovereignty to strict congressional authority and compromised it even further through the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. Their book describes Indian gaming and explores today's hottest political issues, from the Pequots to the Plains Indians, with examples that reflect a wide range of tribal experience: from hugely successful casinos to gambling halls with small markets and low grosses to tribes that chose not to pursue gaming. Throughout, they contend that tribal sovereignty is the key to understanding Indian gaming law and politics and guiding policy reform-and that Indian gaming even represents a unique opportunity for the emergence of tribal self-determination.

As political pressure on tribes to concede to state interests grows, this book offers a practical approach to policy reform with specific recommendations for tribal, federal, state, and local policymakers. Meticulously argued, Indian Gaming and Tribal Sovereignty provides an authoritative look at one of today's most vexing issues, showing that it's possible to establish a level playing field for all concerned while recognizing the measure of sovereignty--and fairness--to which American Indians are entitled.

      Book Description

This case study examines the impact of casino gaming on Native American reservations, and also explores why the idea of "rich Indians" and their participation in corporate America disrupts dominant assumptions and attitudes about indigenous peoples, their cultural authenticity, and their place in mainstream urban society. Taking an anthropological approach to studying gaming on Indian reservations, the case study explores the implications and challenges of historically marginalized peoples now participating in a corporate entertainment industry. The study raises broader questions about the nature of capitalism and the enduring stability of predominant cultural constructs about Indians that have dominated the country's political and economic arenas. By linking gaming with tourism, what is occurring within the United States is comparatively discussed with similar developments in Canada, Australia, and Mexico where native peoples are increasingly demanding greater rights to participate in the formal institutions and governments of modern western societies. Using extensive interviews with tribal elders, employees of reservation casinos, Las Vegas casino operators, and a broad spectrum of the California public, the book will serve to: 1. Introduce readers to the legal, political, economic and cultural tensions surrounding casino operations on Native American reservations. 2. Explore why gaming has become such a politically and emotionally charged issue. 3. Emphasize how these tensions existing between Indian and non-Indian communities are representative of wider cultural conflicts and identity politics increasingly confronting many countries.

4 out of 5 stars A good book from the Magic Attic Club series........2005-03-02

When Rose learns about terrible flooding out west, she is determined to start a community-wide food drive to help the people there, many who have lost everything. But the adults discourage her, saying she needs to start small. Hoping for inspiration, Rose decides to visit her neighbor Ellie's magic attic, and is taken back in time to a Cheyenne village of the mid-1800s. Rose, who is Cheyenne, learns firsthand about the lives of her ancestors, and finds the courage to make a difference, helping a lost pioneer girl reunite with her family.

Young readers who have read and enjoyed other books in the Magic Attic Club series, as well as girls who like time travel stories, are sure to enjoy this book. It's a sweet story with a good message for young readers, and the short length will appeal to more reluctant readers. It also teaches a bit about life for the Cheyenne Indians during the time of westward expansion.

        Book Description

For decades they have remained close, sharing treasured recipes, honored customs, and the challenges of women shaped by ancient ways yet living modern lives. They are the Hindi-Bindi Club, a nickname given by their American daughters to the mothers who left India to start anew—daughters now grown and facing struggles of their own.

For Kiran, Preity, and Rani, adulthood bears the indelible stamp of their upbringing, from the ways they tweak their mothers’ cooking to suit their Western lifestyles to the ways they reject their mothers’ most fervent beliefs. Now, bearing the disappointments and successes of their chosen paths, these daughters are drawn inexorably home.

Kiran, divorced, will seek a new beginning—this time requesting the aid of an ancient tradition she once dismissed. Preity will confront an old heartbreak—and a hidden shame. And Rani will face her demons as an artist and a wife. All will question whether they have the courage of the Hindi-Bindi Club, to hold on to their dreams—or to create new ones.

An elegant tapestry of East and West, peppered with food and ceremony, wisdom and sensuality, this luminous novel breathes new life into timeless themes.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-10-03

I was excepting a really great story. Something along the lines of The Kite Runner. I was disappointed. The story was choppy and at times I couldn't follow it because it bounced back so quickly from past to present. The author never conveyed to me the feelings the Hindi-Bindi Club members had in leaving India and coming to America. The daughters' stories didn't interest me at all. They fell flat. In fact, the book was so disappointing, I didn't finish it. I rated it 2 instead of 1 because the saving grace the book has are the great Indian recipes at the end of the chapters. I loved that each character added recipe "tips."

        5 out of 5 stars kris.......2007-09-22

It is a great entertaining book! Great recipes too. Definitely can relate to many incidents and the themes in the book. Although, many things are different now for Indian immigrants who came to US later on ~ 1990s, (I am one of them), I liked the book and writing style and would recommend the book to all.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-09-17

I could not put this book down. It envoked so much emotion. I read this book like some people smoke crack.... I could not stop. I have not had a literary experience like this in many, many years. It was wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars East meets West.....ha!.......2007-09-15

Suggested by a friend, I purchased this book...and couldn't put it down. I'm west, my husband, and most of my life, is east. Monica captures the tastes, the smells, the everyday understanding of the transmigration and depth of being of India. With her words I felt transported back to that wonderful, mystical land. I cried when they cried. I laughed when they laughed. To me, that is the sign of an excellent book. Well done!!

        4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Book.......2007-09-03

Perhaps a true Indian/Hindi woman might find fault with this book for being less than authentic but I, as an American girl, enjoyed the book very much. Yes, it's similar to the Joy Luck Club because the stories of the traditional mothers and Americanized daughters all intertwine, and the narrative is similar too, as entire chapters are devoted to each character. The author always provides translation when she uses an Indian word, and I enjoyed reading about the different cultural values and foods (recipes for some are included at the end of each chapter). This book offered background about Indian politics and social classes, and I enjoyed learning through the accessible writing style. The book was good, and not all of the stories were predictable, which was nice.

Second in The Lyon Saga series of historical novels for young-adults. Told from the point of view of a 14-year-old girl, Jessabel Archarde, this little-known time period in American history comes vividly alive. The Lyon's Cub continues the story of Jess and her family, and how they try to search out those colonists who split with their original group and went to Chesapeake Bay.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars A GRAVESIDE REQUEST.......1999-09-06

The title refers to the ship mentioned in the first book of this series: the RED LYON. A ship which left hopeful English colonists stranded on Roanoak Island off Virginia in 1587. Stainer explores various theories to account for the historically "lost", almost legendary band of brave settlers who disappeared. It is now 1588 and 16-year old Jess Archarde proves a worthy descendant (i.e. Cub) of the LYON, whose captain pursued a dream to found a cittee of Raleigh in the hostile New World. He was supposed to return with supplies, but he did not--at least not in time.

The original settlers have argued over different means of survival, with hardship and sorrow as frequent companions. While the Armada is gathering strength for an audacious assault on Elizabeth's England, the loyal colonists suffer political anxiety, attacks from warlike Indians (not their kindly hosts on Cracatoan Island) and diminishing numbers. Plus there is always the very read danger of falling into the hands of marauding Spanish privateers, who prowl the coast seeking their enemy, the English.

Despite this tenuous existence, young Jess undertakes a solemn vow and dangerous pilgrimmage: to find the grave of her best friend's husband, there to conduct a proper Christian burial. Neither her father nor her Indian suitor can dissuade her from this folly, for Jess is determined to keep her promise to her bereaved friend, hampered at home with a baby. Jess and her companions endure terrible privation and even slavery, until they escape with two special mementoes of the Spanish garrison. History, Adventure, Danger and of course, Romance Lite! Middle School girls will want to follow Jess' story through the entire LYON series. Stainer weaves an interesting and infomrative tale, thanks to many short chapters, frequent illustrations (by James Melvin) and extensive dialogue. Even though Jess herself is completely fictional, the family name is on record. This conjectured History is highly palatable--ENJOY!

          5 out of 5 stars A really good book.......1999-08-14

This is a great book by a great writer. M. L. Stainer tells a fast-paced, action-packed story about what may have happened to the Lost Colonists of Roanoke Island in 1587. Kids everywhere will love this story!

THE LYON'S CUB is the second book in The Lyon Saga, which began with THE LYON'S ROAR. This series explores what might have happened to the lost colonists of Roanoke Island from the point of view of Jessabel Archarde, who was 14 when she arrived on Roanoke Island in 1587. Now, it's spring of 1588. Last year, their leader went back to England to get more supplies. He still hasn't returned. The colonists are living with the Indians on Roanoke Island. Some of the colonists had left the orriginal group and moved to Chesepeake Bay. When disaster strikes, Jess and two Indian friends set out to find those colonists. But along the way, Jess is captured by Spanish soldiers. Can she escape and find her way back to her family?

5 out of 5 stars Everything old is new again! Exercise a new passion........1999-01-19

Alice Hoffman has uncovered a forgotten piece of American history and inspired me to begin collecting Indian clubs. Hoffman has written an informative book complete with stunning photographs and personal reflections.

Indian clubs now prized for their sculptural, artistic merits were once a must for every man, women, and child who hoped to obtain physical and spiritual well-being in the late 19th, early 20th century.

It's amazing to learn that Indian clubs were once thought to be an exercise that would stand the test of time. Hoffman has shown they have, not as muscle builders but as a collectible.

If you're interested in learning something new and not afraid of becoming an Indian club collecting addict as I have since reading this book, I suggest you order Indian Clubs today.

5 out of 5 stars Confirms there is a new "exercise" in folk art collecting!.......1999-01-04

A wonderful read...informative.Photographs are ready for framing. Definitely will inspire you to begin to collect Indian clubs. As stated by Gerard Wertkin, Director, Museum of American Folk Art, "(Alice Hoffman) has recovered an all but forgotten subchapter in the history of American sport and, at the same time, helped us appreciate another aspect of American artistic creativity. Hats off to her!" I agree with Mr. Wertkin and the following reviews: Antiques & Auction News, "A colorful exercise in collecting,"..."documents the "life" of this colorful and practical form of exercise...a charming addition to any antiques library." Antique & Collectibles News Service, "Inside Antiques, Good Reading,"..."we love (this) book...a folk art gem." Antiques Review, "The Bookshelf,"..."Superb color photographs...Fascinating archival material." Denver Post, "What's Up,"..."If you're searching for the most unusual art book of the year don't overlook Indian Clubs." Maine Antiques Digest, "Books, Calendars, CD-ROMS,"..."a case for Indian clubs as folk art." The Star Ledger, NJ, "A new life for Indian clubs,"..."new coffee table book...If TV infomercials had been around in their heyday, chances are the physical fitness mavens of the day would have been pitching Indian clubs in the same way abs machines and treadmills are endlessly hawked now."
