Book Description

Follow an adorable Golden Retriever as he trains to become a helper for the disabled.

Ira was not born to be an ordinary dog. A few weeks after his birth, a foster puppy trainer with PawsAbilities, Canine Partners for People with Disabilities, took him home to begin his training as a Service Dog. Service dogs help people who have a lot of difficulty moving around on their own. To become one, Ira must learn how to retrieve dropped keys; press a wheelchair sign to open doors; ride a bus; sit quietly in loud, distracting places; and do many other difficult tasks. Not many dogs can do all that!

Fortunately, Ira is smart and confident, and he is able to pass his Service Dog test. Unfortunately, the new facility that Ira needs to attend for more detailed training isn’t ready. What will happen to Ira? Will he be able to learn a new career as a Guide Dog for the Blind?

•This true story shows the immense impact service and guide dogs have on the lives of the disabled, and what it takes for them to have that impact.

• Adorable, full-color photographs bring children into Ira’s life and let them connect with him in a very personal way.

• See how sixth graders helped train Ira, and hear how they felt about the experience.

4 out of 5 stars Learning Tool and Entertaining.......2007-07-31

This is a great book to share with my 5-year-old granddaughter. It is educational (at her level) but yet entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-06

This book is a great, short nonfiction study of how guide dogs and service dogs are trained. From the moment they're born, through growing up and being loved, through training, and their final assignment to a partner, this book backs up the storytelling with a lot of warm, family-friendly photographs.

This is a good book to read aloud to young readers. Especially curious ones. In addition to telling kids how important it is not to bother service animals and guide dogs while they're working, the author takes time to point out that everyone can help train these wonderful animals.

The photographs really set the book off and make it a book that young readers will probably go through on their own after having it read to them. The story is simple enough that they'll probably remember it enough to "read" it to others.

5 out of 5 stars neat photo essay on guide dogs.......2004-12-09

This is a photo essay of a puppy who born into a family of service dogs. He is raised and trained well but the story has a twist. As the time nears for Ira to go into more detailed service dog training the facility isn't ready to take him. Instead he goes to work for Guide Dogs for the Blind. All ends well for the dog and the new owner. A list is featured in the back of the book of many organizations that provide service and guide dogs for people. Also listed are selection for further reading.

The story created good dialog and helps children learn about how dogs can help those with disabilities.

I would recommend this book to all kids who want to learn more about guide dogs and how they are trained. This would make a great addition to the library as there are only 3 other books in the collection on guide dogs.

    Book Description

The spectacular transformation of China in the last decade is symbolized by its architecture. The booming cities of China are evolving at a speed which is hard to comprehend, and their skylines have seen a profusion of new architectural styles. An economic metamorphosis and an invasion of Western culture have created a dynamic
environment for architecture and construction, both at the public and the domestic scale. This push to prosperity has excited architects from around the globe, who have seen a unique opportunity to produce remarkable and innovative designs.
New China Architecture seizes this moment in time. It documents both the stunning designs of famed architects and the emergence of a whole new generation of Chinese architects. The selected projects cover a broad range of residential homes, public buildings, office towers and the adaptive reuse of older city precincts. The buildings featured include skyscrapers in Shanghai, the dazzling new designs for the Beijing Olympic Games venues, innovative private houses such as those at the Commune by the Great Wall and the now mandatory gleaming new airports and city landmarks.

The edition is as complete a guide for the mian lines of Hall China as you can probably find, however I think the photo layout and quality were better int he previous version.

5 out of 5 stars The book of Hall China's golden years!.......2004-07-14

The Whitmyers obviously worked for years and simply produced "The Informative Reference" to the wonderful Hall China Company and its long production of products. If you love Hall China, this is the book that you HAVE to have in your library. Packed with facts, photos, information found nowhere else but in this volume. Through the help of dealers, collectors and friends; they were able to show Hall's artistry and employee craftsmanship at its finest.
The color photos pop from the pages as the digital up-to-date photo process allows for this volume. It is so wonderful to see so much Hall China and accessories one might never have a chance to see otherwise if it were not included in this book. Hats off to the Whitmyers and all those who allowed them to photograph such fabulous collections.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and more.......2001-05-09

This is one of the best collector reference books I have ever seen. It is laid out in an easy to read and refer format and the pictures are fantastic. It contains well over 100 pages on teapots alone. Descriptions are clear, interesting and well written.

This is a perfect addition to the Hall China or teapot collector's library.

      5 out of 5 stars I am in awe!!.......2001-05-05

One of the most beautifully set up collector's books I have seen. The Hall China items are photographed and then all the backgrounds are eliminated and they are arranged "floating" on a solid color background.... just like a color version of a few old Hall China Catalog pages I have framed... only those "old" catalogs were in black and white... to have all the patterns shown in color and arranged this way is a tribute to the Whitmyer's artistry.

The scope and number of patterns shown was expanded and the wait for the new edition was worth it! The only complaint I have is the prices, especially on Autumn Leaf, seem to be a bit too low, and some items show values much lower than they regularly sell for on Internet Auction services. One can only hope to buy a Autumn Leaf batter bowl for $2,500!

Order it now, I think you will not be disapointed!

        Book Description

Must China be transformed into a liberal democracy, complete with free enterprise capitalism, in order to successfully enter the larger world marketplace? David Hall and Roger Ames explore whether any type of democracy will figure prominently in China's future. The authors believe it is a mistake to equate modernity with westernization and rugged individualism. Hall and Ames argue that as a modern China embraces its larger role in the global marketplace, a new type of democracy will emerge-a blend of traditional Western democracy and the Eastern emphasis on community-which closely resembles John Dewey's "communitarian democracy."

5 out of 5 stars Two Books In One.......2002-06-13

Democracy of the Dead: Dewey, Confucius, and the Hope for Democracy in China is an impressive attempt at dialogue between Confucianism and American Pragmatism on the subject of fostering democratic reforms in China. It is both a history of philosophy text, highlighting Dewey's thought and subsequent Pragmatist scholars, liberalism, and Confucianism, and a polemic about the limitations of liberal thought in China. Although some acquaintance with the texts interpreted by the authors is recommended, the authors' synopses are trustworthy and ably and judiciously given. There are also generous quotes and and a and a nine-page bibliography provided.

Admittedly, I was skeptical about the authors' project, which seemed like a desperate attempt to bridge two subjects, pragmatism and Confucianism, that are both equally unprofitable, with a popular item in the news, China. I wanted an appealing interpretation of Confucianism, that would allow me to understand the cultural divide between east and west more easily. I was also interested in any study about pragmatism, which, as the authors also argue, deserves more respect. Last, I wanted a framework to understand Korean and western dialogue, since Korean interpretations of Confucianism are also relevant to Chinese reform historically, and are also a factor in Korea's relations with western countries. The book satisfied my demands more than satisfactorily.

Some readers may be angered by the authors' use of Deweyan Pragmatism to criticize traditional liberalism, but the authors have good reason. Dewey did have a small role in Chinese educational reform before the Communist Party assumed control in 1949. Dewey, and pragmatism in general, are both better exemplars of distinct American realities than liberalism. Also, using pragmatic terms, the authors couch Confucian concepts in a way more palatable and approachable.

The authors argue, that a Confucian interpretation of democracy is possible. This Confucian democracy is useful as a tool for political reform. And then, by using Deweyan thought, it is possible for Chinese and American reformers to share ideas for reform in both countries. The book, therefore, is ultimately a practical one.

The authors eschew nationalistic and philosophical bias, which is necessary for productive dialogue. This is not a book that celebrates western values over eastern ones. It has relevance also in Korea, yet, ironically, it will not convince Americans of the need for reform in their own country, especially if readers refuse to abandon implicit faith in liberal thinking. This is not a book about dead things, but a very lively, well-written, timely offering..

Charlotte Greenwood never intended to become a comedienne, but she was unfashionably tall at 5' 10" and her early aspirations to become a great dramatic actress eventually led her to the field of comedy. Greenwood, whose early life had taught her nothing if not how to be optimistic, stifled her disappointment and used her considerable skill to become one of the greatest comedic actresses of the early twentieth century.
Based on Greenwood's unpublished memoirs, this biography presents a personal, detailed look at her colorful life. Beginning with her early years in Philadelphia, Boston and Norfolk, it relates her struggles with ill health, her social difficulties caused by her then unusual height and her realization of her ambition to become an actress. The main focus of the work is her career, which spanned more than 50 years and ranged from vaudeville to the dramatic stage and, finally, to films (during the World War II years she starred in Twentieth Century Fox musicals with Cesar Romero, Betty Grable, Edward Everett Horton, Jack Haley, Don Ameche, and Carmen Miranda). Her roles in a variety of works including The Passing Show of 1912, So Long Letty (both stage and film), and I Remember Mama are also discussed. Special emphasis is placed on her career-defining (and best-known) role as Aunt Eller Murphy in the 1955 film adaptation of Oklahoma! Charlotte Greenwood's performance history, a list of her known recordings, and a filmography for her husband Martin Broones are also included, along with a collection of rare photographs and memorabilia.
