Thorough.......2007-09-09
This is not intended to be a comprehensive, indepth encyclopedia. BUt as a basic primer on Rhodesian Ridgebacks, it covers all of the key highlights and provides a firm foundation for understanding this wonderful breed.
Intelligently written, well-illustrated, well-organized, easy to navigate, with an index and bibliography.
I highly recommend it.
$8. 95 pp., Good binding and glossy paper.
great book.......2007-04-11
This book is very beneficial for any one that owns, wants to own,or simply is fancinated by Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are great dogs, and this book is a great resource for the money.
Basic.......2007-01-11
I was expecting this book to be more informative. More of a coffee-table book in style of information.
New owner's perspective.......2005-09-11
This book was very enlightening to a new potential Ridgeback owner (me), and it helps new/potential owners decide if this breed is right for you. If you get this breed, you MUST be prepared as they are very smart. They remember everything (good and bad), and this book really represents their mentality. It also gives good tips for positive training.
Sue knows her Ridgebacks!.......2005-08-24
Having been owned by a ridgeback for over 7 years, Ms. Fox was right on with her "complete pet owner's manual." I especially enjoyed the humor she used when discussing the imperative need for early training. I have always had dogs, but this is my first hound and I will always have a ridgeback. Though definately not a dog for everyone, this book educates the owner or potential owner on the cons and many pros of living with this wonderful breed.
Book Description
The story of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the story of how we develop dogs to meet our own needs. When intrepid Europeans colonized southern Africa, they needed a tough, strong dog that could serve both as a guard and a hunting companion. The result was the Rhodesian Ridgeback, and this book tells its story. It also gives present and prospective Ridgeback fans a wealth of guidance on care, training, health issues, the Standard, showing, breeding and a global perspective of this brave lion dog.

Buy this book!.......2005-12-22
I have owned Ridgebacks for 12 yrs. and I was looking for a good book on the breed. I have looked at several books that are partly about Ridgebacks and a lot about dogs in general. I bought this book based on the reviews and description. I have not been disappointed. This is a very well written book and is exclusively about Ridgebacks.

I wanna Ridgeback! ..........2001-03-15
What a lovely read ... its filled with history and information of this handsome breed ... includes a summary of how the dogs are fairing in different countries and a list of champions ... all obviously written by someone with great experience and knowledge ... Although it comes with lots of photographs ... its still very much a reading book, educational and informative ... If you already have a Ridgeback, get this for your library, ... if you're getting a Ridgeback, read it to learn more ... if you are just looking for a dog ... read it anyway ... who knows, you might just settle for a Rhodesian Ridgeback ...
This answers all you want to know.......2000-08-11
Two months ago I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Carlson in person after which I bought two of his books. Knowing RR for over 10 years , I can highly recommend this book to anyone who ownes a RR or who is interrested in getting one. This book talks about origin , breed standard , feeding , training , sports and even has a few anecdotes in it that are really funny and show what life with a RR really is about. The book also talks about the position of the RR in the different countries around the world , including the USA. If however you are interrested in specific breeders and champions of the past years in your own country (like the reader from New England) , you should contact the RRClub in your country , because that is not why this book is written. This book is written for RR fanatics all around the world. Mr. Carlson knows and loves the RR just as much as I do and proves this through this very informative book , which is a pleasure to read.
A Must For Any Ridgeback Library!.......2000-07-01
An excellent history of the breed world-wide with discussions on temperament, evaluation of the individual animal, the breed Standards, and the direction in which our breed is headed. Profusely illustrated with high-quality pictures depicting Mr. Carlson's choice of the best ridgebacks of the world, the book should be a must-have for anyone serious about the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The book is global in its scope- it does not dwell overly on the ridgebacks of one country- which makes it all the *more* valuable as a tool for education and study.
Super book with super pictures.......2000-04-06
I own several books about Ridgebacks and this is my favourite. It is an enjoyable and informative read. Many of the photos are stunning.

new pup.......2007-04-11
not really what I expected from the book. I could have used a few more prior reviews to let me know that I was actually looking for a book with more information on raising puppies and nuances inherit to this breed of dog. Good book for a true overall picture of the breed, but to much other non-essential information tossed in
Great introduction to RR's.......2006-03-23
I enjoyed this book to learn the history and concerns of RR's. It is a very good introductory book. The author is professional about the breed. I recommend this book to anyone considering a RR or just getting one.
General knowledge.......2004-07-09
I thought the first 6 chapters of the book were good, the first few great. However as you progress through the book the knowledge it presents is geared towards all dogs, to a point where I don't think that a RR was mentioned in the final few chapters, it was general knowledge about dogs.
A Wonderful Book written about my FAVORITE breed!.......2000-05-19
I have owned one Ridgeback who passed away a year and a half ago, and now currently own my 2nd. I have several other books about the breed and really enjoyed Eileen's book the best. It does repeat some of the info I have in other books, such as the history of the breed and breed standard, but lets face it any book on the breed MUST contain those topics. But in some of my other Ridgeback books they seem to either cover a lot of info that is geared towards dogs in general or they tended to cover a lot of information on show dogs throughout the world. But in this book I found the topics to be more unique to our breed & very informative and entertaining. The author goes into details of her own experiences with some of the topics, like sighting examples of her dogs' sense of humor, how they have amused themselves when left alone, how she has trained her dogs for obedience competition etc. etc. AND that is just in the third chapter of the book! The endless pictures she includes in her book are beautiful as well. I just loved this book!
The Greatest Breed Ever.......2000-04-18
This is a great book that introduces the reader to the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed. I found the book to be very helpful and insightful. My wife and I just got a puppy and this book has helped us out with him. We know what to expect from him which is extremely helpful with his training. It has also made us aware of the importance of vaccines and other medical emergencies that can occur and the proper way to handle them. The book is not an in depth technical look at the breed, but an overview of how great these dogs can be to a family, which is why it is so enjoyable. I thought the history of the breed was facinating, along with the descriptions on how gentle ridgebacks are to humans. The author also has a Q & A that is helpful and intersting. These insights really help the reader to familize themselves with these dogs. Also, the pictures were fantastic, they really provide a good look at numerous Ridgebacks and show the beauty of these dogs. If you are thinking about getting a Ridgeback or want an overview of the breed, this book is for you.

An excellent book on Rhodesian Ridgebacks.......2007-07-30
If you are looking to get a RR, I highly recommend this book! It gives you all you need to know about the breed and it also includes some training and health issues in regards to the breed. A friend of mine gave me a book on puppy training and I read it for a week prior to getting our RR puppy. It was a good book, but I felt that it lacked the 'character' training needed for this particular breed. So I ordered this book along with another book (Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)) and read both. I found this book to be great and it answered most of my questions in regards to the RR breed. It covered the history, how to choose the proper RR for you as a puppy, it talked about how to select a RR puppy and it included training as well as health issues.
This book has plenty of pictures and side information which kept me entertained and interested. I leave my book on my coffee table and pick it up once in a while to go over some training tips and I still find it interesting.
This book is well written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns and especially plan to get a Rhodesian Ridgeback!
amazon can't read.......2007-01-26
I AM THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK!
Jennifer Aftanas took ONE, count them ONE, photo in this book. Deb Hackett and I took 90% of the photos.
This is only the fifth or sixth time I have addressed this issue and I am extremely angry.
Fix it or a lawsuit is coming. Enough said.

Out of Date.......2006-03-22
As the owner of two Ridgebacks, I read this book awhile ago. I reread it recently and there are many out of date subjects. It explains that puppies born with Dermoids or Ridgeless should be put to sleep. I bought a puppy to discover that he had 3 large Dermoids. Many vets do this operation now. Dermoids surgery is anywhere from $150-500. What is the matter with a Ridgeless puppy? Nothing. At least find a good home for the puppy. Many people dont mind a ridgeless. Out dated vaccination info. I recommend Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by DR Pitcairn.
The Complete Rhodesian Ridgeback.......2002-10-20
Very good book if you are geared toward showing your dog. Or if you were really interested in the the lineage of the breed in three countries. For the novice recipient of such an awesome
dog, I found it completely lacking in real world advice, save for one chapter. I guess I should have bought " ridgebacks for dummies" because this book mostly went over my head. The content was well written, though. The Authors know the breed.
A good book for a tuff breed.......2000-03-06
Ridgebacks are not easy dogs, and this book helps you understand that. Little things like explaining why your Ridgeback will retrieve a ball once or twice, but then get board unlike many popular canines is very helpful. This is a great book to help a person get to know the breed, but if you already have a Ridgeback I hope and pray that there is nothing in here that you don't already know. I have raised, trained, and have shown two Ridgebacks and I love the breed more than many other breeds I have worked with. As always the best place to learn about a dog is talking to a respected breeders, trainers, and handlers, but this book is helpful with understanding the important background of this great breed.
Very limited overview of the breed.......1999-10-26
Not the best choice for someone researching the breed or living with their first ridgeback. The entire text needs expansion and updating; sections on training and health matters were completely lacking in any meaningful content.
Great primer for those interested in this breed........1999-07-09
This book was very complete and had lots of good information for the uneducated Rhodesian Ridgeback owner. The pictures and information were all first rate - however somewhat dated. Lots of good info on raising and breeding ridgebacks too.

Waste of money........2001-06-04
I hated this book. I don't even own a Ridgeback yet, and I know more about the breed than is included in this book. This is just a general dog book with a few pages of very basic breed history and breed standard info at the beginning. The pictures are nice, but otherwise it's worthless for someone who really wants to learn about the breed.
it was great.......1999-02-02
It had a lot of info. about RRs and helped me train my puppy. I liked it a lot and I loved the Pics.
It was great........1999-02-02
I loved it it had a lot of info about RRs. I have a 12 week old RR and it told me how to housebreak her and train. I loved it.
What a rip-off!.......1998-07-19
This book has less than 30 pages of information specific to Ridgebacks, and it is not terribly accurate. The rest of the book is devoted to VERY general information about dogs. If you can read this review, make better use of your time by visiting rrcus.org, the site of the national Rhodesian Ridgeback club.

Similar to others in series.......2001-07-23
Again, a great pedigree research tool...this edition does contain more pictures and some very nice articles. The best of these articles is one regarding the RR standard, written by Barbara Sawyer-Brown. There is also a short history of the breed by Barbara Rupert. This edition is spiral-bound and much nicer than the 1955-1980 edition.
Excellent basic pedigree info.......1999-01-07
The next best thing to a full stud book search on the breed; however, format in this and the other two volumes may be confusing to beginning students of Ridgeback history. Just wish they'd do a 1992-to-1999 volume...

This text provides an introduction to the fundamentals of gas turbine engines and jet propulsion for aerospace or mechanical engineers. The book contains sufficient material for two sequential courses i propulsion (advanced fluid dynamics) an introductory course in jet propulsion and a gas turbine engine components course. The text is divided into four parts introduction to aircraft propulsion; basic concepts and one-dimensional/gas dynamics; analysis and performance of air breathing propulsion systems; and analysis and design of gas turbine engine components.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Textbook.......2007-03-19
The book introduces the theory and operating principles of gas turbine engines. The fundamental concepts of the turbine engines design are spelled out. The primary systems and accessories of the gas turbine engine are also discussed.
The book provides an excellent foundation in gas turbine engines and jet propulsion theory for aerospace or mechanical engineers. It is presented at the graduate and senior undergraduate level and provides a comprehensive coverage of all the fundamentals in a reader-friendly manner that also works beautifully as a professional reference.
The book is well written and easy to follow with clear explanations and numerous illustrations and pictures to reinforce the basic concepts, trends, and design examples. The book also has several worked examples and many homework problems all which help the reader to grasp and apply the concepts. This is one of the best books available on the market on gas turbine engines and is therefore highly recommended.
Best I have seen.......2006-11-07
I'm a senior aerospace engineering student and am the propulsion lead for my aircraft design team. This book is very readable, understandable, and applicable to what I'm doing. I've looked through several other books and this one (as well as Mattingly's Aircraft Engine Design) has the most useful information and has been very helpful.
complete turbine book.......2005-05-25
This has got to be the most complete turbine book I have ever seen. Containing pretty much everything on cycle analysis, it even provides a good review of thermodynamics and compressible flow. It does, however, look to be a little difficult to teach from with eqautions and graphs flying about, but to the knowledged user it will serve as a great and complete reference. (There are some errors in the text you might want to correct found on the book's webpage.)
Best Textbook on Engine Performance.......2002-03-14
This is the best textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This book is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. It is being used for a basic course in gas turbine engine and a followup course in engine component design...
A Very Good Book With Lots of Useful Information.......2000-09-06
I bought the book "Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion" in August of 1999 and I still read it almost everyday. It is a very interesting book, but it has a serious flaw in that there are so many errors, it appears that the editor(s) were asleep or out to lunch. It was a great disservice to the author, as I think he was shortchanged by the publisher. Being a former member of the USAF, myself I feel that his work was more meticulous than this. Perhaps the publisher was in such a hurry to hit the presses at all costs, that this is the result. This seems to be the trend in recent years. I believe that one of the major networks did and expose regarding major publishing house oversights in this area.
