Customer Reviews:
Best Puppy Book for Kids!.......2007-10-05
As preparation for a puppy for our 10-year-old son, we had him commit to reading this book first. Each night he read alone, and then we read together. It was not only informative, easy to read and follow, but a great shared time as well! It was the perfect "first" book to introduce our son into the upcoming responsibilities of having a dog. I also realized how neglectful I was in raising our now adult Labrador, and how much I want to re-train her with our son's puppy, too!
Great book for kids.......2007-08-23
If you have a puppy or young dog, this book is great for your kids who want to help train it. It has great pictures and some neat tricks for the dog to learn.
Very informative book for children 9 and up........2006-01-30
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and easy to understand. Children can follow and understand how to care for and train their new puppy. This is not a book for people who are looking to learn about dog behavior the history of a dog. You will need to find a more informative book like; Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons for that kind of information. But for older children who want to learn to care for their dog this is a good book for them.
JoAnn Dahan author of Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes and TV Show Host of Kids Training Puppies.
excellent book for children.......2005-02-24
This is an excellent book for your children if you plan to make puppy a new member of your family. It guides the children through the various stages of training a puppy, has good photographs supporting the text and highlights certain important phrases. Whislt it, of course, does not cover all aspects of dog traing, it does not need to do that: the training will be the adults responsibility, and not the child's. The child however can and should support those efforts and by reading this book can add to the training and hence become a responsible dog owner her/ himself.
PRETTY GOOD BOOK.......2003-10-18
Pretty good. Easy to understand unlike a lot of other dog books. I think it's just a little lacking in information, but it's a great book to start with, above average.

Making training elementary.......2007-04-20
Reviewed by Stephanie and J.T. (age 9) Rollins for Reader Views (4/07)
"Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes" is simple to read. All the words are appropriate for those beginning to read. On most pages, the message is simple and concise. There is a list of tips that are in bullet point form.
There are two different puppies shown throughout the book. A little boy and a girl are shown demonstrating the training tips.
Repetition is used throughout "Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes." J.T. asked at one time if he was reading the same page over, because the concepts are the same in many cases. Throughout the book, it is stressed that the children/trainers must develop a relationship with their puppies.
J.T.: "This book is good. I liked it. My friends would like it, too. I do not have a puppy. I have a dog. I am going to train my dog with this book."
This book can be used with preschoolers, also. The pictures are attention-grabbing. The concept is simple. There is a lot of repetition.
I wish there were more children involved in the photographs. There are only two children in the book. To show some diversity would allow all children to relate more to the trainers/children.
JoAnn Dahan and photographer, Walter George, created a wonderful book. "Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes" is not only effective in teaching children; it is also enjoyable to read. This book will teach your child the responsibility they have when they have a puppy. It also will help your child create a bond with their pet.
Enthusiastically recommended especially for young dog owners........2007-02-04
Written by veteran dog trainer JoAnn Dahan, Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes is a guide written to teach young children puppy training basics. Housebreaking, sitting or lying down on command, coming when called, and learning to stay or heel when told are all covered. The very simple instructions and color photographs make Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes quite easy to understand, and the accompanying DVD makes step-by-step instruction crystal clear. Enthusiastically recommended especially for young dog owners. "House Breaking: When you wake up, take your puppy outside. Once outside say, 'Hurry, Sam, hurry.' This will help your puppy go potty. When your puppy goes potty say, 'Good Sam.' (Remember to use your puppy's name.) A puppy will have to go potty shortly after you feed him."
The ease and enjoyment of the book, even for adults!.......2004-07-23
I was immediately impressed with how easy and clearly illustrative the book is. My youngest child was able to read the book herself. She found the pictures of the puppies and children aspects of the book she could relate to personally.
It's clear that JoAnn Dahan has a real handle on how to instruct children, training puppies, and making it easy for parents!

My name is Christi, I am 7 years old. I just got a new lab puppy from my Mom and Dad her name is Ginny. Before I could have Ginny I had to promised I would care for her and train her. This book is so great,it is very easy to read and the pictures of the lab puppies and kids are so cute. I taught Ginny to sit and lie down really fast. I think every kid with a puppy should have this book.

Book Description
In this pioneering study, historian Scott T. Swank reveals the links between the daily life of the Shakers in their planned religious communitites and their artand architecture.
As the Director of Canterbury Shaker Village, the author has had unlimited access to the Village's archives, resources, and grounds, examining papers and artifacts, exploring the 25 remaining buildings, and experiencing the seasons. He has literally been able to walk in the footpaths of the Canterbury Shakers, whose community remained prominent for 200 years. It is one of the oldest, most typical, and most completely preserved of all the Shaker villages, the only community with an intact first-generation meetinghouse and first dwelling house on their original sites. The result of the author's painstaking research and close observation is this perceptive book, filled with discoveries, presentingthe full sweep of Shaker art and architecture in the context of a specific Shaker community in Canterbury, New Hampshire.
Two centuries ago, the Shakers established America's most successful communal societies. They lived in isolated, rural villages, pursuing work and worship in communitieswhere religion, social behavior, and environmental design were constructed as a harmonious whole. These utopian communities were regulated by "gospel order" which assured their members that their disciplined lives were in harmony with God's will. In these spiritual havens, they endeavored to accomplish their founder's twin mandates,"Hands to work, hearts to God."
Shaker designs have endured long after the communities that created them have passed from the American scene. Shaker style, encompassing all elements of art and architecture, has been greatly esteemed for its craftsmanship, sense of proportion, simplicity, and practicality. The author's well researched text, detailed captions, and excerptsfrom diaries and letters bring life to the legacy of Shaker objects as well as to the architecture. He also provides a time line, a bibliography, and notes.
Accompanying the text are 250 illustrations including 150 in color principally by Bill Finney, who has been photographing Canterbury for over twenty years. There are alsohistorical pictures and maps and newly created plans and diagrams.
This insightful book should especially interest collectors, historians, interior designers, and architects, giving readers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Shakers'artistic legacy.

Deceptive marketing.......2000-04-23
I had no idea this book only covers the former Shaker village at Canterbury, New Hampshire. The title and cover of this book indicates a comprehensive treatment of Shaker buildings, not just one village. None of the info available . . . amazon.com indicated the true nature of this book. This is a real problem with buying books sight-unseen from internet booksellers. Nonetheless, this is a good book about Canterbury. But some of the finest Shaker buildings are in Kentucky, and the only buildings still inhabited by modern Shakers are in Maine. All these and more are in Julie Nicoletta's definitive book, "The Architecture of the Shakers." It's also a better price!

Masterpieces of Shaker Furniture
ASIN: 088150310X |
Book Description
During the nineteenth century, the Shakers conducted America's first successful experiment in utopian living. From Maine to Kentucky, they built communal villages whose unique buildings were designed to accommodate hundreds of inhabitants unified in the common purpose of work and worship. Julie Nicoletta's perceptive text and Bret Morgan's striking photographs illuminate the austere beauty, regional variations, and functional and stylistic evolution of Shaker buildings over the course of two centuries, evoking a visual and literary survey of Shaker design and its impact on our culture at large. Despite the fact that Shaker communities are almost extinct, an appreciation for their legacy continues to grow. Architects, designers, curators, collectors, and an ever-widening public have sought inspiration in Shaker art and architecture. The Architecture of the Shakers is a book for all those who wish to learn more about these remarkable buildings and how the rich cultural legacy of the Shakers continues to resonate within them.
Customer Reviews:
i wont buy it........2007-07-25
i like and use the "look inside" feature all the time. if a publisher cant give me more than one page or two to get a feeling of what is on the inside,,then they dont want to sell them all that badly.
i guess they use the "look inside" thing as a ploy that they dont take seriously,to bad for the writer, because i do.
and another thing,i wish i knew if what the other guy said about the first reviewer being the writers husband was true.. if it is true, and what he wrote,a glowing review,, being biased and saying anything to sell a book dont cut it with me.i cant stand dishonesty.
if its true,,, i dont care how good it is,i wouldnt buy it. i hate being thought of as a sucker.
that said,i think i have bought nearly every other book on the shakers that is sold on this site.
Thorough and discerning.......2000-11-25
A thorough and discerning book. Nicoletta's matter-of-fact prose is a welcome antidote to the nostalgia and sentiment that creep into more reverential treatments of the Shakers. Like any other history, Shaker history turns out to be complex and messy, not simple and sweet. How interesting to see Shaker buildings of the Victorian era, with floral wallpapers, clunky furniture, and primitive telephones.
Not bad, not great.......2000-11-17
This book delves inconsistently into shaker architecture, but the style is very pedantic and unfocused. By the way, Kucher, who wrote the first glowing review is Nicolleta's husband. So take that review with a grain of salt.
The definitive work on Shaker Architecture.......1997-09-24
Nicoletta's book is intelligently and clearly written and boasts Bret Morgan's gorgeous photographs of Shaker buildings. The only book on Shaker Architecture you will ever need--and the best.

Book Description
The Ghassan Ibrahim Shaker Collection is an important collection of Qur'ans and other religious manuscripts notable for the quality of their calligraphy and the splendour of their bindings and illumination. Its publication contributes to the growing appreciation of Islamic calligraphy in the West, not only in terms of technical form but also the essential interdependence of script and format with the expression of faith. The collection concentrates on Qur'ans and includes particularly rare and interesting items, such as an Ottoman Turkish translation; its other far-ranging holdings include Qur'ans from Mamluk Egypt in the 13th Century to Ottoman Turkey in the 19th, two royal Qur'ans from Qajar Iran, and manuscripts from the wider Islamic world - from Morocco, Sudan, and Nigeria, from Turkistan, Indonesia, and China, from Mughal India - as well as others produced by calligraphers working under the Ottomans in Bulgaria. The Shaker Collection throws light on the work of famous scribal personalities, such as Yaqut Musta'simi, and on anonymous amateurs, and includes manuscripts by female calligraphers. The accompanying essay discusses practical issues such as scribal training and the preparation of materials, and focuses on the expressive use of lesser-known scripts and layouts.
