Excellent.......2007-05-20
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is contemplating getting an Old English Sheepdog. It has a wealth of information on the breed and I found it a great help in preparing for our new puppy.
Old English Sheepdog.......2006-07-09
A great book for those who own anb OES or thinking about getting one. There is alot of information about these dogs and this is the best I have found
WOW. The best OES book I've seen. Perfect........2006-01-02
Well, the American Kennel Club has found a book that merits it's seal of approval. If all of their breed books are this good, they'll put everyone else out of business. It is that good. Details about the breed, pluses and minuses, basics of training and healthcare, tailored to the breed. Just great. I would recommend this series to anyone who is a first time dog owner, or who wants a comprehensive book about their breed.
I've read a lot of breed books, training books and magazines, have dog breeders and trainers in the family, and this is the best breed book I've seen.

Big Ben Review.......2003-05-07
The theme of the story is never give up if it's really important. This story is believable because the dogs ran away, which is something most dogs do. The characters in Big Ben were kids who went out searching for their old English Sheepdog and Mrs. Fitz's Poodle. The characters were believable because they cared enough to go looking for the dogs, and not waiting for the dogs to come home on their own. The setting was very real, and could have taken place anywhere in the U.S. I thought this book was interesting because parts of the story surprised me. Iwould recommend this book to anyone who likes animals.
The big softie.......2001-02-28
when julie and her dog , ben move to compton they don`t exactly make friends with their neighbour Mrs fitz and her dog , but when it snows mrs fitz`s dog goes missing not long after that ben goes missing aswell. not long after neil and emily are on the case will they find the two dogs alive ? get the book and find out ha ha ha !
Big Ben Review.......2000-12-30
This is a good book to read because Mrs.Fiz thought Ben was a bad dog but Mrs.Fiz found out Ben was good.
A exciting adventure!.......2000-07-18
Big Ben was a good book and was exciting, but was not among my favorites of the Puppy Patrol series. Well, if you like big cuddley sheepdogs and little pampered poodles, this may be your favorite Puppy Patrol book.
Book Description
Before winning recognition as an artist and writer, Emily Carr served as landlady to an apartment building where she bred English sheep dogs to supplement a meager income. A collection of stories about those hard-working days, The House of All Sorts features vividly portrayed tenants who frequently surprise Carr with their foibles, as well as the beloved canines who provide her with companionship. Carr is at her most acerbic and rueful, but also filled with vitality and an inextinguishable hope.

Comprehensive Overview.......2006-03-15
In comparison to other books about specific breeds of dogs, this stands out as an exception. Full of history, care and disease information about Old English Sheepdog. I keep copy on my coffee table. Constantly looking up details as my OES grows through puppyhood.

As a O.E.S.owner and breeder I found this to be a MUST for any new O.E.S. owner. After reading the book cover to cover I believe it has the most accurate information and advise of any Dog book that I have ever read on O.E.S. My compliants to anyone to had anything to do with the information included in this book. Even a layman can tell that the photos were of well breed and well cared for animals.
An excellent guide for the new or prospective OES owner!!.......1999-08-29
According to the cover, this book was written as a "Pet Owner's Guide" and truly lives up to it's name! It is an excellent tool for anyone who is interested in purchasing an Old English Sheepdog puppy as a companion or family pet. There is also a section that informs the reader how to find an adult dog and explains about breed rescue programs.
The author completely covers all aspects of Old English Sheepdog ownership, beginning with how to find the 'right' puppy or adult. It is written in a clear, easy to understand style while realistically informing the prospective owner of the "cons" as well as the "pros" of living with an Old English Sheepdog. The book contains many color photographs some of which illustrate the versatility of the breed.
As an owner, breeder and exhibitor of Old English Sheepdogs for 27 years, I feel this book is a "MUST READ" for anyone considering this breed as a pet.

Customer Reviews:
"Short, Sweet, and Hard to Beat".......2007-01-03
At 96 pages, this book charms without trying to be charming. The prose is beautiful, without unnecessary adornment, caring without being sentimental, and wise in its observations about life without preaching. I am always looking out for a 'sleeper'--a book relatively undiscovered and special-- that I can give my best friends, aged aunties, young moms, children, that is not trite or trendy or filled with the obvious. The sketches by the author reveal both depth of feeling and simplicity.
This was my introduction to Emily Carr, and a week later I'm half-way through her autobiography (Growing Pains) and looking up her paintings on the Internet.
Enjoy!!

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular and priceless textbook.......2007-07-25
Have read it so many times the binding is broken. George Nash is an amazing craftsman and provides numerous time and money saving suggestions. Must have for buyers/owners of older homes.
A practical renovation book vs. a nice picture book.......2007-07-23
I am never motivated to write a review for purchased books, but this book is so outstanding that I must. Essentially, this book actually provides useful information and a methodology of thinking which allows the home owner to solve problems in renovating for repairing his house. As other reviewers have noted, one reads the book looking to find answers to specific problems and amazingly the information is there! The reason for the success I believe is two fold. This author has done this work before, that is, renovate OLD homes, as apposed to a contractor who simply tears out and builds new. He has empathy with the home owner. And two, the author is succinct in his information. He doesn't waste page after page with reviews of tools you might need (don't you hate those!) He doesn't waste pages on photographs of workers holding up a level! He doesn't waste pages simply telling the reader, "oh, you better hire someone for that, and that, and that ..." And more importantly he is writing to the home owner who is a 'do it your selfer' is therefore is concerned about expenses. He simply has managed to provide information which is actually useful, in a well written, beautifully photographed, inspiring book. If you really need advice about old homes, I can't recommend this enough.
This Book Earned Its Five Star Rating!.......2007-06-21
I pulled this book off a library shelf just to browse it. Wow! My house is 101 years old so maybe; I am biased. But George Nash is a very knowledgable lover of old houses. He must have worked as a building inspector since he knows so much. It is full of great information and photos. People who should read this book are; house lovers, real estate agents, restoration contractors, and anyone thinking about buying an older home. I love it!
Rebnovation.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book for my 21 year old son who is an apprentice carpenter for a contractor who does renovation of houses. This is one of the finest renovation books I have had the opportunity to review. It has the renovation coverage that will be a great boon to my son in his learning of the carpentry trade. I have been an electrical contractor for over 40 years and have a lot of experience in all of the trades. I am impressed with this book. It will be of great benefit to my son as an overall reference book in renovation. Thank you!
The Bible for renovationg old houses.......2007-02-07
This should be one of the first books on your new-old house's bookshelf when you move in. Its advice on a multitude of repairs including repairing the pulley systems in your old windows, how to repair rot damage anywhere inside or outside of your house, etc. is extensive and very helpful. This book is a great resource for the do-it-yourselfer...or, if you want to hire someone, at least you will be knowledgable enough after reading this book as to whether or not they are doing a proper job.

The Real Deal.......2007-07-22
I am working on an old house restoration and from my reading this book has useful and sage advice. It is not a beginners guide and does not waste time explaining tools and materials other than to point you to more complete sources of information. A very useful book for the intermediate woodworker or builder taking on an old house project.
Simply Great.......2006-08-31
Fantastic, comprehensive book on old house restoration as well as maintenance. This one book contains more useful real-world information than a whole shelf's worth of those Home Depot, Black & Decker, etc. DIY books. And it's all delivered with intelligence, character and an occaisional dose of humor. This is a must have for anyone restoring or renovating and old house, living in and maintaining an old house and would be especially helpful to anyone who is about to 'go shopping' for an old house!
I bought it for my son, rehabbing an 85-yr-old tudor home...........2005-09-01
in Kansas City. He read one chapter and pronounced it a collossal time saver, a validation of techniques he has heard from "old timers" in the craft, valued the colloquial and earthy writing style.
He especially appreciated the details on plasterwork, tile, window frames, rim joists and other esoterica.
I have given him many many books, and this won the Best Book Gift Ever award. That is saying quite a lot.
Best All-Around Renovation Book.......2002-08-12
If I had to recommend just one book on renovating old houses it would be this one. Like most similar Taunton Press books, the book is accurate, well written, and informative about techniques that a real person might want to use. It includes lots of information about how old houses are constructed, the kinds of things that tend to go wrong with them over time, and techniques for fixing them. It is realistic about budgets and time constraints. And, perhaps most important, it gives fair warning about the stresses and strains of living in a house one is fixing up.
One might want to supplement this book with more specific books about the kind of house you are working on, and books which provide more information about how to match materials and aesthetics to the existing fabric of the particular sort of house you have, but this book is not to be missed.
Wonderful Reading for the Old House Renovator !.......2002-03-28
I believe this is the greatest book to read first in any attempt to restore and older home. Most homes relate to the late 1800's, but is revealing even for homes built in the early 1900's. Much detail from foundation to roof on restoring any part of an old cherised home for the do - it -yourselfer.
Book Description
