Book Description
When the unconventional Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the island but ended up as a delightful account of Durrell's family's experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home.

Wonderful book..........2007-09-21
This is a fantastically written book that anyone who appreciates literature can love. The immagery rich and deatiled, the charccters are wonderfully brought to life by some witty dialogue, and the charm is undeniable. It also arrived on time and in perfect shape. Reccomended.
Love this book!!!.......2007-09-03
I picked this up when I was in Spain because it was one of the only books I could easily find that was written in English. I loved it!!! Durrell's amazing depiction of Corfu made me really want to go and explore the magical island that he brings to life. Almost twenty years later, this is still one of my favorite books of all time.
Gerald Durrell at his funniest.......2007-07-11
This book is captivating and plain funny. Whether you're an adult or a teenager, you will be consumed by Durrell's great description of his family life in Greece. You'll see the sights, hear the sounds and experience the smells through his teenage eyes. From the mystery of the rose-beetle man, to his distracted mother, and the various friends he makes in Greece, you'll love it ALL.
When I first read this book, I couldn't put it down until the very end. And it introduced me to a whole new world of writing. Durrell's other books are lightweight (but just as amusing) compared to this one. It's a classic and deserves to be on every bookshelf.
An amazing work of art!.......2007-06-21
Wow! This is an amazing book. It has made me want to go to corfu! The book is the true story about gerry durrel and his stay on the greek island of corfu. Gerry has an extreme intrest in nature, (Much to the anoyance of his writer brother, Larry, lover of things hunting, Lesly, and his sister with an acny problem, Margo.) The story takes many twists and turns, in which he comes across many different animals including Dodo the dog, the maggenpyes, and Geronamo the gecko. Five star!
A Good Animal Lover Novel.......2007-05-27
The book My Family and other Animals is most definitely a different book. It is about a young boy, the author, who moves to a small island with his large and diverse family. Gerald is very interested in animals and such. So when they move to the island he likes to just wander around and look at the species and try to capture them. There are really two types of writing going on in the novel, a story part and an informational part. It is very interesting during the more story part, for me, since something is actually happening. However, I do no necessarily like the informational part since it is about animals. I do like animals, but I think it is a bore to read about them like it was a text book. Overall, this is a really good book and it keeps you on the edge of your seat, and it makes you laugh when the whole family gets together with all their differences. I recommend it highly to all the animal lovers out there

Elephants!.......2006-08-20
My son -loves- elephants so it would be hard for this book to be a miss. The illustrations are beautiful.
Wonderful!.......2006-08-10
We have been reading this story to our 2 year old daughter since she was 2 months old and it's still her favorite book. She now recites the words as I flip through the pages - this book has definitely left an impression. Additionally, the pictures are colorful and fun! It's such a sweet story about the fun a mother and child have together, and the special bond the two share. I'm sure your little one will love this story just as much as mine does!
Favorite Bedtime book.......2006-07-28
My 2 year old and I read this every night. It is a wonderful book and we look forward to it every night.
"My Mama's love surrounds me always".......2006-07-12
Toddlers and Preschoolers will identify with the little elephant and how he enjoys the mom's company through the different activities of the day. It's a good book to reflect on the blessing of families. Good bedtime story. Beautiful illustrations.
A Beautiful Book - Words and Pictures.......2003-06-14
My son is almost 2 and this is one of his favorite books (and mine too!). The words are put together so eloquently and the amazingly beautiful illustrations make it the complete package.
The book really captures the love between a mother and her child.

One of my top children's books.......2007-08-13
This is one of my grandbabies favorites....and I have five. I make certain I buy it for any expectant parents I know. I find myself asking my grandkids, 'Won't you be my Kissaroo?' even when we're not reading the book.
DELIGHTFUL, SWEET BOOK THAT THE KIDS LOVE........2007-05-08
This is an ideal book for mom or dad to read to their little one. The illustrations are great and quite eye catching. The book is entirely about love, love between parent and child and that is a good theme to read about with any child. The text is simple to understand and goes quite well with the illustrations. This is a great bed time story book or setting under a tree book for you and your young ones. Recommend this one highly.
Will result in lots of kisses!!!.......2005-12-02
My 2 year old simply adores this book. The illustrations are glorious, with many different animals in brilliant hues. What makes this book a favorite is that most pages involve a different kind of "kiss" ("A morning kiss is full of sun and wishes for the day to come") and means you can bestow all of these different kisses on your little kissaroo. Basically, it's a GREAT excuse to give multiple kisses to your child (without he/she pulling away), and they're actually returned!
My little kissaroo loves this book.......2005-11-08
This book has so many elements children love: pictures of animals, a birthday party, a birthday cake (my 2-yr-old loves pictures of birthday cakes!), kisses, friends, etc. It tells children about different kinds of kisses (morning kisses, goodbye kisses, etc), and it has cute illustrations to go with it. The cute illustrations have details that my daughter loves to point out and name, and the colors are good. We like this book and recommend it to others.

As a self-described "champion of small uglies," English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but ended up as a delightful account of his family's experiences that were, according to him, "rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas."
As a 10-year-old boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with "all those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids." Durrell's descriptions of his family and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that "all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely true") are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book.
Book Description
Soaked in the sunshine of Corfu, where Gerald Durrell lived as a boy with his "family and other animals," this book evocatively chronicles his five-year sojourn on the Greek island. With hilarious yet endearing portraits of his eccentric family and their many unusual hangers-on, My Family and Other Animals also captures the beginnings of Durrell's lifelong love of animals. In its passionate understanding of Corfu's natural history, this is an entertaining and enduring memoir.

You'll end up reading this one over and over again..........2006-02-21
I must say this is one of the most light-hearted, hilarious books I have ever read. The story is of a world that one really may not get to see these days.. Go ahead and buy it..
I wish I could give it 6 stars!.......2005-08-09
This book is absolutely, brilliantly funny. The wit and unique characterizations are woven with great descriptions of the animals and plants of Corfu. That Durrell can hold the attention of readers who have no interest in biology simply demonstrates what a fine work this is. Gerald's depiction of a larger-than-life expatriate family on a larger-than-life Greek island is a tremendous celebration of life. The variety of different Greek characters parading through this book rivals the variety of Corfu's flora and fauna. Absolute great read!
the funny Durrell.......2005-04-24
Gerald Durrell was not only a naturalist and a gifted writer about his beloved animals, but a loving brother and son whose descriptions of his family and their foibles will keep you laughing all the way through. This is one of those books which I've reread so many times I've lost count, and which I've given to many friends who needed cheering up. Always works, too!
Way better than Croc Hunter.......2004-06-30
In todays day and age of Steve Erwin and Jeff Corbin who go around hunting for animals, it is easy to forget where it all started. With people like Gerald, and the London zoo. In this book, he collects animals, deals with his demented siblings and his long suffering mother who has to raise four kids and fend off the advances of a really persistent Colonel who gets increasingly vulgar and `grabby' when he drinks. This is a rare story that combines a humorous story with humorous writing and I once caused passengers in a flight to turn around and give me strange looks, so hard was I laughing.
Skeleton of a Plot embellished with tonnes of vocab.......2003-11-17
My Family and Other Animals is a bare-bones story in terms of plot. The Durrell family goes to Corfu, lives through what could be termed as a soap opera, and leaves. It's humourous, but not particularly challenging.
However, the older Gerald Durrell utilises vivid vocabulary over and over when describing the setting and people of Corfu. Fifteen-letter words that paint a crystalline picture are used frequently, relieving the never-ending roller coaster that is the life of the Durrells.
Overall, this is a highly entertaining book that will keep you engaged for the week or so that you will spend reading it every spare second you have.

My Mother Is Mine.......2007-01-11
I gave this to my Daughter for Christmas as she has a year old and she cried. She just loved the book and the idea behind it.
Daugher/Son.......2007-01-10
I got this for my daughter when she had her first child. Her eyes were teary the entire time. I now have a copy here at my house too!
Gets me every time!.......2004-03-05
This is a precious book. When I read it to my little ones, I confess I get a lump in my throat every time. It reminds me how precious a mother's love is to a child, and in it's own simple way, challenges me to be a better mother each time I read it. A special thrill has been watching my six year old learn to read and read this book back to me. Hearing him say these sweet words in his own voice is a treasure.
A Very Sweet Book.......2001-05-26
I found this book at a book fair at my sons daycare and got it for myself as a Mothers Day gift. The words are very heart warming, and the pictures are wonderfully done. This book also came with a card which I found so moving that I have framed it. I would highly recommend it to any mother(or father) to read for their children, or just to keep for themselves as a little 'pick me up' when parenting gets tough.
Love From A Child.......2001-04-06
This book is terrific coming from a child to his/her mom. It teaches and at the same time shows appreciation. If you want to give a gift to a mother, this is the best and is worth more than I could say ..
Book Description
Susan Konigs first book offers a uniquely frank look at the modern family by an exceptional humorist on the order of Erma Bombeck and Jean Kerr (Library Journal). The Konigs can barely turn around in a city apartment that seems to be shrinking. With Baby #3 on the way, they take drastic measures: They buy a house and move to The Burbs. Countless sticky adventures ensue. In her hilariously unflinching account of motherhood and domestic pursuits, Konig shares a supermoms little secrets, from the importance of Cheerios to the truth about Bambis mother (she was running an errand).
Customer Reviews:
Funny, entertaining and insightful.......2006-12-16
This is really a treat as Ms. Konig let's us into the inner workings of her family - and her own head.
"Why Animals..." makes a great gift - I've given at least twenty of them and everyone has appreciated the read.
I hope there's a sequel!
Funny! A mom in need of a laugh? Get this book!.......2005-09-22
Are you a mom with young kids? Maybe you have a toddler and are pregnant again? You will be nodding your head, saying, uh-huh, laughing, totally identifying with this mom. Probably saying, "Hey, I could have written this!" I'm enjoying this book and as a mom to two young ones, a 3 yr old, and an 11 month old, I recommend it. (I read it in the bathroom or while nursing!)
Wonderfully Funny and Honest!.......2005-05-17
Maybe we have our new Erma Bombeck in Susan Konig who supplies some wonderfully humorous and amazingly honest looks at motherhood in her new book, which is a compliation of realted essays. It's been over 20 years since I had todlers but Konig brought it all back to me - the fun, the funny, the insanity!
This book will be enjoyed by mothers of all ages and circumstances.

I've been there..........2001-01-03
This straightforward book offers realistic insight into the hard work of farm life.
Fricke's sensitive descriptions of MidMissouri countryside are reminiscent for me. A city girl, I taught a year in a one-room rural school just across the river from the setting of the book. Much later, my husband, once a farm boy from the same county, became an ag professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He initiated a series of Feminine Farrowing Schools. In brief sessions, ag instructors trained women to work with piglets as the author had to learn on her own -- enduring plenty of criticism from her demanding husband.

A Masterpiece.......2001-04-17
Now this is not only a coffee table book and a great reference material, it is a collectable in itself.
Finally, quality photographs of the best ship models ever made, and still on public display in the UK. I have looked high and low for a book of this quality, and it was worth the price. It also contains a comprehensive list of the ship models held by the National Maritme Museum in Greenwich, UK, and the purpose and history of ship models through out the ages. In particular, it gives the ship modeller a fresh perspective on different types of models you can achieve, and how striking effects can be achieved with half models, frames, dioramas, cross sections, single cannon pieces and other unique items.
Remember, Great Britain was the dominant navy in the age of sail, and their museums hold the best records of those ages. Add this to your wish list, and if you can afford it, buy it and display it for all to see.
