This is the 2nd edition, and is just as good as the first. Great for reading, the recipes are wonderful and this is a great book. I have visited several of the towns and after reading the update, want to return and spend more time in each of them, and especially try out the restaurants mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY WRITTEN AND PRESENTED.......2007-05-30

Just wanted to say that I have enjoyed the receipes that are in this cookbook. My father always loved fried okra and fried tomatoes and I was thrilled to see this included in a cookbook. Thank you Ashley for including items in your cookbook that Bapaw and Nannan would have enjoyed seeing. This cookbook is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Good Eats!!!.......2007-05-03

Re-create the flavors of the Low-country no mater where you live. As Charleston native now living in Atlanta I missed the tastes of the Low-country until Christmas when I received this book. It is full of wonderful recipes, menus, gift ideas, and much more. The book itself is a GREAT GIFT idea. I can't wait to try my first Pig Pickin'...my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Yum!!

5 out of 5 stars delicious.......2007-05-03

I have been cooking for years and I'm always looking for new ideas or new ways of cooking the same ole thing. I have been in Charleston 9 years and love this style of cooking, so I'm very happy I found such a wonderful book. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars From Yankee to Southern Hostess.......2006-07-11

When I moved to Charleston SC I was faced with a whole new form of cooking. Grits? What the heck is that? Stew made with more frogs (aka Frogmore stew - no frogs!) Thankful I found Ms. Ohlingers Low Country Cooking book! Not only does she have wonderful southern recipes, she has included tips, advice and my favorite... "Living Like a Local". I am now proud to say that I've mastered "Sweet Tea", from her recipe, which is a staple here in the South. I will be including her book in my "Welcome to Charleston" gifts for my guest... now that I'm the proper Southern Hostess!

5 out of 5 stars Yummy!.......2006-05-24

Very much enjoyed this cook book! Even a novice cook like me can easily follow these 'user friendly' directions!

    Book Description

This book was originally conceived as a collection of the best recipes from the Savannah News-Press, a publication dating back to 1850 and including author Joel Chandler Harris of "Uncle Remus" fame among its former editors. Like the Dixie moppet Topsy, Savannah Sampler Cookbook "just growed" to include contributions from acquaintances and relatives. Emma Rylander Law, the friend who has generously consented to act as food consultant in the project, made available her own remarkable collection spanning a distinguished career as home economist, dietician, and Madison Avenue food consultant, as well as family recipes from Burke County. Historic perspective has been provided by the inclusion of vintage recipes from fragile Southern cookbooks long out of date, including two from Savannah. Private collections hereto unpublished have been generously made available, such as those of Mrs. Sopie Meldrim Shonnard and the late Helen Kehoe Crolly.

    3 out of 5 stars Great Pictures.......2003-03-27

The book has no index and the table of contents is only pattern names and not manufacturers. Although this book has great pictures, unless you specifically know what you are looking for; it is difficult to find things in it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2002-03-02

Very pleased with this book. Many large, clear color photographs. Great variety of china and glassware included.

    3 out of 5 stars Gene Florence/glassware 40's 50's & 60's.......2001-09-24

The information in the book is interesting but not specific enough. Pages of pictures but do not name the pieces and sometimes it is difficult to know which piece is which. Also, can't really see the patterns very well; maybe so he can sell the book that just has patterns.

    5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2001-08-18

Gene Florence is the premier expert on vintage glassware. He does the collectibles industry a great service by having clear pictures of glassware that's often very difficult to photograph. Each edition differs enough in content to warrant a second look. He tries to add a few new patterns every time. For those he repeats, he adds different pieces and new finds. The nest part is that he has a lot of knowledge about the glassware companies and reproductions that he shares with the readers.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference for collectors!.......2001-11-23

Great book for the avid collector of 20th century glass. Arranged by style, this reference book is easy to use. What would make this book a 5 star book? More color photographs would make this an unbeatable buy.

5 out of 5 stars Pages and pages of Information!.......2001-10-26

This book lives up to it's title "Easy Identification"....I would recommend it to both new collectors as well as the experienced one! Loads of background information on glass companies as well as values!

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book for helping identify 20th century glassware........1999-03-15

The great thing about this book is that the patterns are arranged by type of pattern rather than alphabetically. When trying to identify something, an alphabetical listing isn't a lot of help. Having patterns arranged by whether they have diamonds, flowers, flutes, hobnails, etc. makes a lot more sense and I wish more glass books were organized in this fashion. The authors have done a great job. If there is anything about this book I would change it would be to have more of it.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have guide for collectors and sellers alike........2003-11-16

This is another important addition to my library of collectible, kitchenware and depression glass books.

More than 40 new patterns are included and pricing and many pictures have been updated. I like the alphabetical listing because it is easy to find the patterns I'm looking for.

As an avid collector, I find this book invaluable in helping me pay reasonable prices for my collectible glassware.

I would give this book a 5 star rating if it had more information on Fenton's Hobnail pattern. This pattern is often wrongly identified with other similar hobnail glass pieces and it would help me immensely if the pictured pieces showed the manufacturer's number.

I heartily recommend this book to collectors and dealers.

With illustrations by John Tenniel. This Elibron Classics book is a facsimile reprint of a 1904 edition by Macmillan and Co., London, New York. Whereas much of the first Alice novel centered around a card game, Through the Looking-Glass focuses on a chess game of mammoth proportions. A social satire much like its predecessor, Looking-Glass contains some of Carroll's most memorable characters and best nonsense-verse ("Jabberwocky").

          4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2001-11-23

This book is a great start and a nice overview of glassware from this era. Anyone collecting glass from these three decades knows that one book just cannot possibly capture it all, but this reference offers a great sweeping presentation. For collectors with large volumes of glassware, you won't go wrong with this book.

          3 out of 5 stars disappointed buyer.......2001-07-24

I bought this book without going to a bookstore to preview it. The only reason I wanted the book was for the peanut butter glasses on the cover. Only after searching through the book did I check inside the cover to find out that the Big Top peanut butter water tumblers were not featured in this book. I felt this was very deceiving of the author and although there are a lot of pictures of glassware, those pictures can be found in many other books.

          4 out of 5 stars collector's choice.......2001-03-20

the book is very helpful in reconizing and the value of many collector's dreams it has a lot of photo's that is also very helpful.the price was very reasonable,oh and i recived it in 2 day's.not bad...

I just bought this book and the pictures are great and very detail. Gave a good amount of info about the company. Only thing I would like to see done is I have a problem knowing what the pieces are. It would be helpful if the were numbered so you could identify them easier. Would buy more book from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Another home run for Gene Florence.......1999-12-22

Numerous glass companies from the "good old days" are represented in this edition and this IS another "must have" for the serious Anchor-Hocking, Fire-King and EAPC collectors to carry around with them in the car! Most importantly the photography is, as with all of Florence's books, beautiful and extremely color accurate. Price guidelines are updated and in tune with prices at the auctions. You don't even have to be a glassware collector to enjoy this book, it would make an excellent gift to someone's mom!

Beginning collectors will have an easy time with this practical guide, but those with more experience will find it no less valuable. In Fifty Years of Collectible Glass 1920-1970, Tom and Neila Bredehoft focus their expertise on all kinds of stemware, decorations, and accessories. The first two sections are divided by pattern type--separate categories are devoted to knops, roses, birds, and wheat, for a total of 45 different segments. In the accessories department, you'll find coverage of items from candy jars to console sets separated by type, rather than pattern. Newcomers to glass should be sure to check out the helpful descriptions and line drawings of stemware pieces in the first few pages. Since most of us don't intuitively grasp the difference between a sherbet and a cocktail glass, or know the exact shape of a touraine, the Bredehofts have thoughtfully provided clear and concise definitions that make an excellent introduction or refresher course. The eight bright and glossy pages in the center of the book are a visual treat, showcasing items from many major manufacturers, including Heisey, Duncan and Miller, and U.S. Glass.

Small identification photos are plentiful, and the occasional illustration or old advertisement adds a nice bit of variety. Even in black and white, the pictures of various patterns come through cleanly--only a very few are fuzzy enough that a magnifier may be needed to clear things up. --Jill Lightner

I purchased volume II of this publication and there are only 4 pages (front & back) in color. Many of the black & white photos are like looking at bad Xerox copies. I think I'll find it very hard to identify patterns from many of these small photos. Otherwise, well-laid out and organized.

What a wonderful surprise I found in my mailbox today! Volume II is another super book by the Bredehofts. Stemware and decorative accessories galore! Good, clear photos; great old catalog and sales literature; and exceptional descriptions for the novice collector. I really liked the arrangement, by shapes and patterns, rather than by pattern alone, or color or by manufacturer. Much easier for attempts to identify that unknown piece. And I really appreciated the simple definitions of the parts of stemware. This book will be well-used; a super addition to my reference library.

This is an excellent book for the beginning collector of "fities" glass. This book covers a wide range of manufacturers; with the primary emphasis being on Italian glass. The book contains excellent pictures that make identification of individual pieces an easy task. This book also includes a section that talks about the designers; another that shows the labeling and/or signatures on the glass; and the glossary which I still find very helpful. It is regretable that this book is now out of print--however, I recommend it highly to anyone. Look for it, if you find it, keep it, as it is truly a treasure trove of useful information
