Book Description

A delightful and affectionate toy dog hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun, the Japanese Chin is counted among the world's most beloved companion dogs, a breed that author Juliette Cunliffe describes as a "happy little character with a down-to-earth, yet bumptious, personality." Despite his small size, the Chin has a larger-than-life approach to the world: alert, spirited and friendly to all whom he encounters. As a home companion, the Japanese Chin demands affection and little else, being a naturally clean pet, often compared to a cat in cleanliness, sophistication and self-awareness.

This new Comprehensive Owner's Guide provides an entertaining portrait of the Chin's origins and history, the breed's physical characteristics and temperament as well as the special requirements of the new owner. Owners will welcome the author's advice on selecting a healthy, typical Chin puppy, rearing, feeding and house-training the pup, plus obedience lessons, home safety and grooming. Additionally, a lavishly illustrated chapter on preventive healthcare by Dr. Lowell Ackerman provides up-to-date accurate information on inoculations, parasite control, selecting a veterinarian and other topics vital to the ownership of a healthy pure-bred dog. Whether you are a long-time owner and breeder of the Chin or a newcomer to the Chin clan, this new volume will be a welcome addition to your breed library.

2 out of 5 stars Look else where........2007-03-29

I felt like I was ten years old again being scolded by my mother while reading this book. The author manages to be as demeaning as possible to adults who read it. With continous comments like are you sure you're responsible enough to have a pet? Maybe you should try a fish. Comments like this are relentless throughout the book. It was like the author wanted to make you feel like a retard or something.

However, that's not to say that the book is without its merits (hence the 2 stars not just one). There's allot of information here on caring for your Japenese Chin as well as some interesting history on the species. Anyway, if your alright with being spoken to as if you were a 2 year old you can't go wrong with the price. Just be forewarned, the author is down right irritating at times. To the author: I wouldn't be purchasing the book if I didn't already have the dog, stop with the lecturing already!

4 out of 5 stars Yes, Comprehensive.......2007-02-21

This is a good over all manual for raising a Japanese Chin. Interesting history of the breed, breed standards, health needs and warnings, training techniques and hints, and all the fun stuff. I found it to be all I needed.

3 out of 5 stars No New News.......2006-10-27

This book is good for a beginner, but if you already own a Chin then look elsewhere. This book offers the same information that can be gleaned from a google search.

3 out of 5 stars Good information.......2006-03-16

Gives lots of information, nice pictures. If you know alot about the breed already, this is not the book for you. Most of the information is readily available elsewhere. If you are a novice to the Japanese Chin Breed, then this is a good start. Lots of information in one place.

5 out of 5 stars Great art work.......2006-03-16

What a darling book about a Japanese Chin and his adventures. The art work is wonderful. Although it is officially a children's book, I appreciate it for the art work and the cute extra details put into the book. If you love dogs you will love this book, especially if you know about the Japanese Chin breed.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book for children of all ages.......2005-11-01

This is a must-have book to add to your holiday shopping for children of any age. My 6 year old and 3 year old boys have an extreme love for all sort of dogs and instantly fell in love with Henley. We hope Henley and the author will make more journeys together.

I loved the book. All of the pages are beautifully hand drawn and painted. It has an elegant old fashion style, and ends with a good
moral. I am an artist with a newfoundland as a pet and friend, we
related well to this book.

3 out of 5 stars Fresh and Different........2003-10-22

I am a proud owner of the Big Aiiiieee. It is absolutely refreshing to hear from other voices than the popular writers such as Tan, Kingston, and Hwang. Chin certainly has made many great and valid points. Tan, Kingston, and Hwang, together, represent a body of cultural sensationalism against especially 'Asian American' men. I agree with Chin on many points; however, Tan, Kingston, and Hwang are wholly to be blamed.
First of all, the term "Asian American" should be eradicated. I am not an Asian American. I am a Chinese-Vietnamese American, as specific as that. With that in mind, this anthology is mainly composed of Chinese and Japanese-American perspectives. Where are representational voices of Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, and South Asian people (India, Parkistan, Burma).
Secondly, I agree with Mr. Chin that Tan's and Kingston's portrayal of Chinese culture is primitive and backward. Tan's Joy Luck Club contains lot of images that promote cultural sensationalism and exoticism. For example, An Mei's mother cuts her flesh from her arm and dumps them into her grandmother's soup. The non-asian readers will subsequently thrive on this stereotype and apply it for all "Asians." This is like another form of canibalism. Another example of cultural sensationalism is the uncle eating live, jumping shrimps with his chopsticks (or Did I miss something?). As for Kingston, the Woman Warrior clearly was written with an intention as a feminist piece. Because there is no greatly equal novel to dispute its exaggerated feminism, mainstream readers take this as a true portrayal of Chinese/Asian men -- brutal rapists.
Furthermore and on a positive note, what makes this anthology fresh is the fact that it includes other fresh(not new)but neglected voices such as Louis Chu, John Okana, Monica Sone, Gish Jen, and so on, writers that are not given a fair chance in mainstream publishing.
Finally, I think this is a great anthology. Unfortunately, it does not truly represent me and my Vietnamese American community. What I got from reading this anthology is a sense of freshness as far as perspective is concerned; however, emotionally, I am more identified with Flannery O'connor, Toni Morrison, and Duong Thu Huong.
For those dire fans of Mr. Chin and harsh critics of interracial relationship: He married a caucasian woman, so are some of his colleagues.
Beware of whom you worship!

5 out of 5 stars It's a matter of history........2002-04-26

Since the publication of this book, it has been criticized for it's "machismo, misogynist" morale. Guess who these criticisms are coming from? White feminists (or those who support them). They cannot look beyond history and textual matter, instead they force and assume their principles and try (and unforunately, they succeeded) to make this a battle of Women's rights. I have read Chin's "Come All Ye Asian American Writers of the Real and of the Fake" and in nowhere is there any misogynistic dictum. Why? Because this isn't a matter of Women's views or MEN'S! It's about history and how it should be interpreted. People like Kingston, Hwang, and Tan want to deconstruct Asian American history. Feminists want to help Kingston's and Tan's deconstructive views by arbitrarily labeling Chin as a misogynist. If Chin or the editors of The Big Aiiieeeee! were misogynist why would they have women writers in this anthology? Just because there aren't that many women writers doesn't mean it's totally and utterly sexist. Could it be because there aren't that many authentic Asian American women writers?! If there are no authentic texts to Asia America, would it hurt to say that stereotypes (or whatever) are actually right?

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly engrossing!.......2002-03-03

This is a great anthology on Asian American history that's well worth your time to read!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2002-03-02

What gives people like Amy Tan, Maxine Hong Kingston, and David Henry Hwang the right to take my cultural distinctions and cater it to a white audience who want the stereotypical Chinese?! I'm glad Frank Chin exposed these sell-outs in this important book. There are Asians who are far from being these sorts of stereotypes described in the literatures of Tan, Kingston, and Hwang, and these editors prove it. Read this book and you'll find that out yourself.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Filipino.......2002-02-09

and I know how much these editors helped my ethnicity in the first Aiiieeeee! These people (Chan, Chin, Inada, and Wong) know their stuff, and they're not ashamed of their cutlure. They are unassimilated, brave, talented, and strong. You would be more proud of your Asian race after reading this book.

Book Description

Western home and garden design has been increasingly influenced in recent years by ancient Eastern traditions. Feng shui masters are now routinely consulted by architects and interior designers, and bonsai gardening continues to fascinate and inspire. In CREATING BONSAI LANDSCAPES, the spirit of the East is recreated in 25 stunning miniature landscapes that not only are a delight to look at but also lend a harmonizing and soothing force to any environment. Su Chin Ee works with a Chinese form of bonsai art known as penjing - which literally translates as "landscape in a pot or dish" - to create her designs.

The art of bonsai was developed as a means to please the ancestors so that they would bestow blessings and wealth for generations to come. Su explains how each bonsai landscape in the book conveys different elements of the original eastern philosophy and themes.

Each landscape is presented in project form, with clear advice on how to select suitable plants, plant and position them, and nurture them successfully to full maturity. Each project is thoroughly illustrated with a color photograph of the completed landscape, cross-section drawings to show how the landscape is put together, and practical advice on choosing the equipment and materials for creating special features. Tips on construction techniques and shortcuts, and a visual materials list of required items, round out the detailed instructions. And to ensure long-lasting success, Su provides pruning and trimming tips, solutions to common problems and diseases, and a directory of the most popular bonsai trees and shrubs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A very small world.......2003-07-14

The writer presents 18 miniature landscapes which, she says, "represent a very personal synthesis of the bonsai and penjing traditions". These landscape are made up of the usual tiny trees, moss and gravel, but they also contain intricate rocky "outcrops" which form the basis of the entire landscape. Her creations combine the delicacy of the tiny landscape with the ruggedness of rock and tree to unique effect.

The writer gives detailed instructions for making each of the landscapes, including - I kid you not - how to make all the rocky outcrops yourself. Given patience, skill and delicacy of touch almost anyone could follow these instructions and make a very attractive table top landscape.

The writer was born in Singapore and studied art in England. She is a judge in the bonsai category at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. She approaches her miniature landscapes from the point of view of a painter, and she incorporates the Chinese principles of Tao and the balance of yin and yang to create harmony in these beautiful miniature worlds.

    Book Description

This unique oral history presents the Japanese American saga as told by those who lived through it. Frank Chin details the lives of first and second generation Japanese Americans before World War II with a rich kaleidoscope of images drawn from interviews, popular songs, novels, and newspaper articles. The heart of his story is the tragedy that followed the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when Japanese American citizens lost their homes and property and were forced into internment camps. The author deftly weaves interviews and testimony from the Japanese American Citizen's League (JACL) with opposing, in-depth conversations with those who resisted the JACL's support for U.S. policy. This shameful episode in American history resonates deeply today as we witness similar erosions of civil rights in the name of wartime security.

      Book Description

The descriptions Chinese and Japanese people attribute to themselves and to each other differ vastly and stand in stark contrast to Western perceptions that usually identify a 'similar disposition' between the two nations. Academic Nationalism in China and Japan explores human categories, how academics classify themselves and how they divide the world into groups of people.
Margaret Sleeboom carefully analyses the role the nation-state plays in Chinese and Japanese academic theory, demonstrating how nation-centric blinkers often force academics to define social, cultural and economic issues as unique to a certain regional grouping. The book shows how this in turn contributes to the consolidating of national identity while identifying the complex and unintended effects of historical processes and the role played by other local, personal and universal identities which are usually discarded.
While this book primarily reveals how academic nations are conceptualized through views of nature, culture and science, the author simultaneously identifies comparable problems concerning the relation between social science research and the development of the nation state. This book will appeal to not only Asianists but also those with research interests in cultural studies and Sinology.

Adopted as the highly prized pet of royalty, the Japanese Chin was originally sent as a gift from the Empress of Japan to the Empress of China. Queens Victoria and Alexandra both fancied this Toy breed. The authors trace its origin from Oriental beginnings to present day status as a glamorous companion and show dog, and offer an in-depth analysis of the breed Standards, and a special section on caring for this lively extroverted dog. Pamela Cross Stern and Tom Mather are both international judges with decades of personal experience in the breed.

1 out of 5 stars Not the book I thought it would be.......2002-07-22

I just rescued a Japanese Chin from the Humane Society, and wanted some info on some quirks of the breed, personality traits, best ways to feed and care for a Chin, etc. This book is ONLY for people who want to have a show dog. It gives some of the history of the breed, grooming tips, how to select the best show dog, and also some tips on judging. Nothing at all about the best food/toys to buy ... if you happen to just want a pet. Not only that, the description did not make it clear that this book is published in and intended for England, so those of us in the colonies don't have much use for the specifics anyway.

I'm very disappointed! This costs too much to be so [disappointing]!

        Book Description

An innovative social and cultural history of the British roots of Federal style furniture in Boston.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Most significant American Furniture Book in Recent Years.......2004-01-26

This is far more than your coffee table antiques book. The author provides a facinating social history wrapped around John seymour's early life in England and the move to Maine and Boston. Through the window of the ups and downs of furniture making we can get an understanding of the times. This aspect reminds this reviewer of Morison's Pulitzer Prize winning book, John Paul Jones, A Sailor's Biography, which addressed the same time period and began with Jones early life in Scotland.
But the book is really about the furniture, some of the finest and most significant to have been made during the Federal period. To understand the Seymour's work Mussey devoted ten years and didn't look at just a few exampls-he looked at and studied just about every suggested example. From this he developed a construction and aesthetic dictionary that allowed him with some confidence to identify pieces that are really made by Seymours, father and son. In chapter 5 he lays out these criteria. My only very slight quibble with the book is that I would like to have seen a page of say lunette-inlays and say a page showing many examples of Seymour dovetail joints. This would better allow the reader to come to his own conclusions.
The remainder of the book, basically the last two thirds, is a catalogue of the furniture. The photographs are beautiful and the descriptions are far more interesting and informative than the norn for this type section.
The book qualifies as a coffee table book because it is a big, has significant weight and is beautiful. But this is not the reason that it should be in the library of those who appreciate American furniture. Rather it is because this is in this reviewer's opinion the most significant American furniture book to have been written in recent years.
