Book Description
This anthology pits those who believe that animals share with humans certain fundamental legal rights against those who believe that such a notion is dangerous and absurd. Animal research, pet ownership, vegetarianism, zoos, and cloning are among the topics debated.

A Must-Read For Animal Rights Activists.......1998-10-12
The compiler of this book is probably great, but the quotes she puts in from people who don't believe in animal rights is mostly bull, and I am sure Janelle is aware of this. I think the sole reason this book exists is because before we go protesting against something, we must know our opponents' point of view, no matter how lame it may seem, or else we will not appear educated. This unique book is a must-have for anyone who tells people about the torture of animals in factory farms, laboratorys, etc. etc. etc.

A great and useful text.......2005-11-26
The Opposing Viewpoints series is a good series for students and others who are working on some of the hot button issues of today. Each volume contains essays and articles that explore the issues thoroughly from several different angles. Sometimes there are two clear sides, but sometimes it is a bit more nuanced.
This particular volume deals with Animal Rights. The issues explored within the volume include the pros and cons of whether or not animals even have rights as we come to think of them in human and legal terms. The issue of use of animals for food is explored, and the issue of animal experimentation in various settings is covered in sometimes, always and never contexts. Finally, the issues of hunting, conservation and zoos are looked at from several angles.
Overall, this is a very good beginners book to the issue. It helps to set the guidelines for debate and discussion. There is an appendix with facts about animal rights, related documents, as well as suggestions for further reading. The author, Jennifer Hurley, teaches and writes, having received a master's degree from Boston University.

Animal Rights.......2006-05-19
This book tells me that along with people, animal have rights. Generally speaking, animal experimentation is good in most cases. As long as the scientist is actually working on finding a cure for something, then it is a good thing.Although some animals are treated unfairly sometimes, I think that animal experimentation is ethical because we can make sure medicines are safe and get advances in medicines, and because it is helping to decrease human suffering. For example, it has provided us with antibiotics and vaccines, insulin for diabetes, treatments for leukemia, and has made possible advances in medical technology, such as blood transfusion and the heart lung machine.
The majority of animal testing is used for developing new treatments for disease, and fundamental biological medical research. All prescription drugs must be tested before they are allowed on the market. To get rid of animal experiments would be to stop modern medicine, to allow human suffering, and to put human's health at risk, by allowing products on the market without testing the level of toxicity. Humans share about ninety-nine percent of their genes with chimpanzees and only a little bit less with monkeys. This makes these animals a good guide to the human body.
Along with providing research, it also serves as a way to reduce human suffering. With experimentation, we have been able to use anesthetics during surgery. Without anesthesia, the patient would feel every cut that the doctor made. It also is responsible for bringing us the polio vaccine. "I wonder how many of the people out protesting on animal experimentation on top of their stools skipped their polio vaccines when they were younger," says John D. Porter of the Division of Laboratory Animal Research.
Animal experimentation has also decreased the number of endangered species around the world. By breeding these animals, scientists are able to create more of the species. This will hopefully lead into no more endangered species. Later on, we will not have to breed them any more because they will breed on there own.
Experiments have helped a number of people and animals for a many reasons. Many people protest because they think that the animals I the labs are being mistreated. All experiments have to be approved by the Animal Rights Committee. If the terms are not met, then the experiments are illegal, and the scientist is forbidden from the experiment. Every animal is given the best care before, during, and after the experiment. Animal experimentation is ethical and should continue until there are no diseases or
allergies at all.

Customer Reviews:
Toll House Memories.......2006-07-06
Thrilled to see this book in print again. I use a worn paperback edition from the 1950's. I remember dining at the Toll House restaurant with my aunts and uncles and cousins to celebrate my grandmother's birthday, probably in the late 1950s. Along with my grandmother and Julia Child's Mastering the Art of Cooking, Ruth Wakefield's recipes taught me to love to cook. Today we can adapt them for lower fat, etc. as all good cooks do adapt recipes. Whether you make Lobster Toll House, or brown bread or mocha chiffon pie the results taste as good today as they did at the restaurant many years ago. A wonderful gift for any aspiring cook or sentimental New Englanders.
A food history classic........2003-12-07
This is the classic cookbook based on the recipes served at The Toll House restaurant, from the inventor of the chocolate chip cookie. That recipe (for Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies) is included here, and has a slightly different technique than that on the back of the Nestle package, which improves the texture of the cookie.
This is a small, all purpose cookbook, of the Joy of Cooking variety. There is an extensive section on kitchen hints and menu planning in the beginning of the book. The recipes cover the full range from appetizers to jams and jellies. These are pretty close to fool-proof, though obviously from a different era.
If you're into food history it is worth picking up a copy. It is a stand alone book, but it is frozen in time as well. Even more fascinating is the full cookbook these recipes are from, which is long out of print. This is a fine substitute, though.

Information in a painful format with lots of tiny mistakes.......2001-03-14
This annoying book is poorly written, sloppy intellectually, and poorly formatted. It is used as a college food science textbook and the workbook is a separate purchase. Too bad because the workbook is well written, well organized, and thoughfully put together. This book assumes a year of recent college chemistry. It lacks a glossary and serviceable index; but that seems unimportant when you consider the frequent contradictions and misinformation on things like the ratios of ingredients in self rising flour. AURGH! The authors are clearly not writers and the publisher clearly does not care to adequately edit this book for information, style, or presentation. Given the topics this text covers, it is hard to imagine how anyone could have done such a pitiable job. Food and food science should be exciting subjects. All I can say is the authors must have enormous egos. Shame on the authors... They must have gotten degrees from colleges that did not have an English requirement. When you get this text, buy an additional book to have something enjoyable to read.

Book Description
Coarse bread bathed in olive oil, then rubbed with tomato or garlic and salt, is common to all the Mediterranean cultures from France to Algeria, from Morocco to Greece. On the island of Majorca, it is known as pa amb oli, bread and oil. Tomás Graves takes this healthy peasant staple as a starting point to explore not only Mediterranean cooking, agriculture, and traditions but also the historical crosscurrents that have rescued this simple dish from disappearing along with a way of life that had remained essentially unchanged since Roman times.
Pa amb oli has come to symbolize for Majorcans all that is still honest and valid in the island, which became a major tourist destination in the 1960s and has been looking for its soul ever since. Bread and Oil celebrates the Majorcan character as reflected in its eating habits-simplicity, serenity, resourcefulness, and no qualms about getting one's hands oily.
"Bread and Oil . . . explores local traditions-the cooks and the restaurants, the bakers and sausage makers, wine-growers-and the provenance of its flour and bread, olives and olive oil, and the sensational vegetables and fruits."-Independent
Customer Reviews:
A Cultural Treat.......2006-03-01
Tomas Graves captures the cultural nuances of Mallorca in his narrative. The book is a translation of the original Catalan text and some linguistic intimacy with his native readers seems to disappear in English. As a frequent visitor to the island, his descriptions of local life and customs had a lot of relevance to me that could easily be lost on someone who has not been to Mallorca or only experienced the island's garish holiday life. As he describes his favorite rembrances of island life and his personal experiences expressed around the singular theme of bread and oil, the repetiveness of the theme is noticeable, but Graves seems to expect the reader to bear with him as he shares his thoughts and stories. I enjoyed his verbal pictures of Mallorca enough to buy his latest book, Tuning Up at Dawn, which is about his Mallorcan remembrances of life as a musician.

Just like Mom's cooking.......2005-04-03
My mother died a few years back and while dealing with the flood of memories I realized that with the exception of her chili (it was truly awful), she was a darn good cook. Since she was a native of Germany, she had several dishes that I now found myself missing. I also realized that I was too stupid when I was growing up to ask her how to cook. As a result, I could seldom find German restaurant food as tasty as hers.
Well, I searched around a bit online and in the library and the "authentic" German cookbooks I found didn't represent the kind of cooking my Mom had done, until I found this book. As soon as I saw the sample recipe for Jaeger Schnitzel, and prepaped it, I knew I was in business.
This book has some tasty recipes in it. I recommend it if you are missing your German mother's cooking too.
Great recipes, but missing some essentials.......2001-08-16
The recipes in this book are great, this is true, but there are some essential recipes missing, mainly in one category. The wonderful tomato salads and cucumber salads aren't in this book, and anyone who has had these knows what I mean. There are also a couple of bread spreads very typical to Germany that aren't listed, but otherwise, this book is great. It looks like they even have the best recipe for Bienenstich (Bee sting cake) that I've ever seen here in the states and one that should actually work for a change. I'm keeping this book for sure.
I buy a second one!.......2000-12-15
Hi, my name is Peggy and I'm from Germany and spent right now one year in my host family. I was looking for a christmas present and decided to give a german cookbook. But it was not as easy as I thought until I found this one. I ordered it (without reading the recipes- difficult) and after I got it I took a look in there and it really brought a smile in my face to see all the recipes I like and we used to cook in Germany. And that's why I decided to buy a second one and cook more often for the people I like. If you are looking for a cookbook with authentic recipes- here it is! Try it- you'll never regret it.
One of the Best Cookbooks I've Ever Used.......2000-04-18
I love German food, and after having lived in Germany for several years and moved back to the states I really missed authentic German cooking. Then I found this book, and I now use it at least twice a week if not more often. It is easy to follow and the added hints makes the recipies unique. I have recommended this book to many of my friends, and co-workers. And I now recommend it to you. Our favorite is the German Hamburger and potatoe pancakes. And I can honestly say it tastes just like a German grandmothers would. Use it and enjoy!
