Book Description

Moose, the giant deer of the northern forests of Europe, Asia, and North America, can grow up to seven feet tall at the shoulder and exceed sixteen hundred pounds. Author and wildlife biologist Victor Van Ballenberghe has studied wild moose in the field for thirty-five years. The author gives insights into the species, their habitat, and predators and shares intimate stories about the moose he has studied for extensive periods. The beauty of these creatures, their strange grace and gentle nature, and their personalities are captured in lively text and dramatic full-color photos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bruce.......2005-03-11

I am an avid reader of Alaskan literature, having lived there for several years working in resource management. Dr. Van Ballenberghe has compiled a wonderful collection of photographs, combined with a literate - yet easy to read - essay on this wonderful animal. This book is a great read, not only is the text on moose inspirational, but a reader obtains a sense of the wildness and primacy of the land.

This would be a wonderful gift for readers of all ages, educational, factual, and gripping. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars In the Company of Moose.......2005-03-02

Dr. Van Ballenberghe shares his intimate knowledge of moose behavior as one who deeply respects his subjects. Each chapter deals with a basic aspect of the moose life-cycle: surviving winter, getting prepared for the fall rutting period throughout spring and summer, the rut from the perspective of the bull and the cow, and surviving predation from wolves and bears. The chapters are not labeled as such but van Ballenberghe's engaging prose lets these themes seek up on the reader. His first hand observations of nearly 30 years of moose research reveal an understanding of individual moose probably unrivaled by today's computer-jocky statistics oriented wildlife biologists. He emphasizes instances of decision-making in individual moose which lead to good or poor survival strategies -- a subject one rarely encounters in scientific works today. This alone is quite an accomplishment but, in addition, the book is replete with full page color photos of moose in all their glory and in all stages of life. Most are full body close-ups. Many are breath-taking scenes of Denali National Park and the Alaska Mountains. The quality of the photographs is exquisite. There are so many photos that the book would be suitable for the coffee table. My only criticism is that the book is only 122 pages in length.

5 out of 5 stars A unique, gorgeous, and highly recommended specialty book .......2005-01-04

Fans of hunting as well as fans of wildlife biology in general and moose in particular will relish Victor Van Ballenberghe's gorgeous color photos and in-depth studies of wild moose, backed by his thirty-five years in the field. Images pair well with text which describes the habitats, habits and features of wild moose in not only North America, but the forests of Europe and Asia. In The Company Of Moose is a unique, gorgeous, and highly recommended specialty book and a welcome addition to school and community library Wildlife Studies collections.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2004-11-25

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Not only were the pictures breathtaking, but the author's style of writing made me feel as though I was walking through the woods with a friend, a friend who knew alot about moose! a real eye opener about these gentle creatures. would make a great gift.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but..........2006-04-05

With a huge background in costume jewelry, I was looking forward to this book. The information in it was great with makers and designers I had never heard of, that made me very happy. I was NOT happy though with the 'size' of this book, it is VERY small. The photos were wonderfull when they were close up enough to see detail, but most of the photos of multiple pieces or sets were too small to see any detail. I would suggest this book for the information and details about designers, but not really for the photos.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for collectors.......2004-11-18

This is one of the most amazing books written about vintage costume jewelry. The examples shown are ones most collectors can only dream of one day owning. The photography is fabulous, and the jewelry is world class. This compact book is easy to take anywhere, and more interesting each time you pick it up.

                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful pictorial & educational Jewelry Source!.......2000-03-23

This book by Dena Farnetti Cera has the most fabulous color pictures of jewelry spanning from the early 1900's thru the early 70's. Every single page is packed with insightful information on the designer, construction, craftsmanship, identifiable marks, and date of jewelry piece. Some of the examples in here are truly exquisite. A must have for any serious jewelry enthusiast to hardcore collector/dealer. It is very easy for one to peruse thru - whether you are looking for a particular designer/ manufacturer or style - you are sure to find it. It gives you a taste of many different designers. It is well organized & written - the picture quality is superb. The only thing it is lacking is prices. For someone looking to identify & educate themselves it is a Must Have! If you are trying to value your pieces - and need a price guide - this book does not offer that. Overall, this would be an important book to add to any costume jewelry library!

                    Book Description

A compendium of design, from the best-known practitioners in modern jewelry, and an invaluable sourcebook for designers, collectors, and dealers in fine jewelry. The desire to depict animals in art has always been strong, and the early history of jewelry, from Celtic brooches to Renaissance pendants, shows abundant examples of its appeal. The Jeweled Menagerie begins by painting a picture of this historical context, but its unifying focus is the great efflorescence of jewelry design in the modern period. It was not until the nineteenth century, with the growth of a middle class eager to show off their recently acquired wealth, that a whole new group of designers and manufacturers, mainly in France, sought to satisfy the appetite for jewels of all types made of precious metals, precious or semiprecious gems, and enamel. There was a revival of Egyptian and Etruscan styles in which animals of all sorts were incorporated: birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and fish. The discovery of Japanese crafts also had an influence on the jewels that were created during the century. Prominent jewelry houses, such as Fontenay, Falize, Fabergé, and Tiffany & Co., all created a spectacular array of animal jewels that are much prized today. The new design developments from the turn of the century and through the whole of the twentieth—Art Nouveau and Art Deco before the Second World War, but also a plethora of forms in the decades since—contributed impressive animal jewelry, from Lalique's intricate insects to Cartier's panthers to the sophisticated imagery of Verdura. Here for the first time the contents of this "jeweled menagerie" are examined in detail, showing the great imagination and skill that have gone into the fashioning of these precious objects. They exhibit not only meticulous craftsmanship, but grace, humor, and refinement. All lovers of fine jewelry will be intrigued by the many examples of a demanding art, displayed lavishly here in color. 250 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A Sumptous Look at Modern Animal Jewelry.......2005-08-05

This is a wonderful resource for high end, modern animal jewelry pieces. These are not designs you will find at your local jewelers, and it is probably of limited use to crafts people, but as eye candy it can't be beat.

While brief mention is made of historical pieces, this is really a book about Victorian jewelry to the present. It is a shame that there is not more information about the wonderful animal jewelry of antiquity, but perhaps that will come in another volume.

If you are interested in contemporary and 19th-20th century jewelry design, this book is a steal at the Amazon price.
