5 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK.......2003-11-08

A good book written by someone who has done the hard yards. Certainly one of the better dog training books in my library and one that I recommend off my web site. wwwrossallan.com

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-07-28

This book is especially good for the person starting out. It goes step by step in each training method and gives good pictures and drawings of the exercises to be performed. You are given traits to look for when selecting your K-9 partner as well as what to avoid. You are told exactly what to expect and if you do not get the desired result to repeat the lessons until you do. It was very benefitial to me with my first police dog.

    Book Description

Chinese classical furniture is esteemed throughout the world for its beauty, functionalism, and influence on contemporary design aesthetics. Sarah Handler's stunningly illustrated volume traces Chinese hardwood furniture from its earliest origins in the Shang dynasty (c. 1500 to c. 1050 B.C.) to the present. She offers a fascinating and poetic view of Chinese furniture as functional sculpture, a fine art alongside the other Chinese arts of calligraphy, architecture, painting, and literature.
Handler, a widely respected scholar of Chinese furniture, uses her knowledge of Chinese social, political, and economic history to provide a backdrop for understanding the many nuances of this art form. Drawing on literary and visual evidence from excavated materials, written texts, paintings, prints, and engravings, she discusses how people lived, their notions of hierarchy, and their perceptions of space. Her descriptions of historical developments, such as the shift from mats to chairs, evoke the psychological and sociological ramifications.
The invention of a distinctive way to support and contain people and things within the household is one of China's singular contributions, says Handler. With more than three hundred exquisite illustrations, many in color, Handler's comprehensive study reveals "the magical totality of Chinese classical furniture, from its rich surfaces and shrewd proportions down to the austere soul of art that resides in the hardwood interiors." Austere Luminosity recognizes Chinese classical furniture as one of China's premier arts, unique in the furniture traditions of the world.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched, covering historical past of each furniture type..........2006-08-22

the book discuss the evolution of chair, and then studies the different type of furniture such as chairs, beds, tables, cabinets, screens, and stands. each have very good examples and explanation of its origin.
however, I have to point out the very first line of this book "china was the only nation in East Asia, indeed the only nation outside the West, to adopt the chair-level mode of living before the modern period." is incorrect. In late Shilla and Koryo period of Korea, Korea have also adopted chair for government palaces and other government offices, but decided not to use for residences (probably because of extreme cold and space, and preferred the "ondol" floor heating system).
Western scholarship still lack proper viewpoint of China, Korea, and Japan. However, this book is quite very good, and much better than her other book "Ming Furniture in Light of Chinese Architecture".

    5 out of 5 stars A Treasure of a Book.......2001-11-24

Essential reading for all interested in fine design (East, West, North, or South), this work may well be the most beautiful book published this year.

    Book Description

An ideal commingling of exquisite and often rare materials, perfection in craftsmanship and exceptional purity of line are what place Ming design, particularly in furniture, at the zenith of Chinese art. MING FURNITURE IN THE LIGHT OF CHINESE ARCHITECTURE is the first book to show the essential kinship between Ming furniture and the buildings they were designed to be placed and used within. Sarah Handler's special perspective sheds a luminous glow on the concepts of interior and exterior form, function, placement, and purpose and reveals the inextricably intertwined relationship of Ming furniture to Chinese architecture. Decoration, construction, and function come together into a harmonious and indivisible whole, just as the Chinese artisans envisioned.

5 out of 5 stars Mortise and Tenon.......2006-07-28

Being a fan of Sarah Handler, its easy to feel the furniture flow through the Ming Architecture.
Just having retured from China and Tibet, this book was in the back of my mind as I stood and gazed up at the columns and beams mortised and tenoned together to form the typical Chinese structural backbone. Sarah has made the connection between the structural engineering of Ming/Qing building skills and the master carpenters' use of the Lu Bang Jin manual that describes appropriate and propitious use of shapes, materials, orientation and all things lucky in architecture. Buy this book and you will be happy, have prosperity and long life!

1 out of 5 stars disappointing analysis of furniture and architecture.......2005-07-29

chinese furniture have a strong relationship with architecture, in its proportion, construction, and relationship to the space. I was looking forward to see a more detailed analysis of such relationship but this book turned out to be a mediocre repetition of numerous chinese furniture books already in the market. Many of the pictures are from dealer's photos or Museum's existing photos. The reference paintings are primary from Chin P'ing Mei or similar paintings which have been published numerous times by other authors. The sketch or drawings are mediocre. There are no measured or proportional anaylsis of the furniture to the architecture. I have returned this book.

    Book Description

During the 16th and 17th centuries, Chinese furniture reached a pinnacle of exceptional design and meticulous workmanship. Beyond the Screen leads the reader on a journey that encompasses not only the evolution of these exquisite furnishings, but also includes the many literary, architectural, and visual contexts in which they were created. Alongside 64 superb color photographs of the furniture itself, numerous Ming woodblock prints and literary excerpts show how furniture was used in daily lifeUas everything from a lover's hiding place to a projectile thrown during arguments. A vital response to the West's increasing interest in traditional Chinese furniture, this beautifully produced volume is both an illustration of the aesthetic possibilities of furniture design and a fascinating look at China during the early modern period.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine Book on Fine Furniture.......2000-04-12

BEYOND THE SCREEN is an apt title; it describes this book both literally and metaphorically. Nancy Berliner and fourcontributing writers dissect both the life and furniture of sixtheen and seventeenth China in a work that combines art, craft and social history. My husband, an amateur woodworker, was fascinated with descriptions of workmanship and digrams of joinery. I preferred the sections that talked about the people -- both the craftsmen (usually anonymous) that made the furniture and the elite who commissioned it. But the focus point of the book is undoubtedly the photographs of the furniture itself -- some pieces which are classically simple, others that are intricately carved. Berliner comments at length on each piece. For collectors of antique Chinese furniture -- or reproductions -- this book is an absolute must-have. It gives the story behind the craft and makes sitting down so much more interesting!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing joinery!.......2005-07-30

I was amazed by the furniture in this book. The drawings illustrate a level of craftsmanship that is stunning and humbling to a western wood-worker. The joinery is something to be aspired to and was inspiring to me.

    4 out of 5 stars A good book..........2005-07-07

Good book but it would have been nice to have more detail about the joinery and construction basics of Chinese furniture.

    Still it's a nice one...

5 out of 5 stars A classic in the specialty and still a must........1998-10-15

Very few books on furniture - Chinese or otherwise - do as successful a job. Not only is the history discussed and the pages well illustrated (in black and white), but timeless scholarly discourse is offered and revealing disective drawings provided. This is a must and you will see how the author has laid the foundation for more recent works on the subject since it has become vogue.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic text showing a good collection of furniture........1998-05-29

This book is worth the money. I was looking for book on Chinese furniture as a resource for woodworking. This book is a Dover reprint of a limited edition by Gustav Ecke in 1944. Inside are about 160 plates most of which are black and white pictures, though some are drawings. I believe one will get a good overview from the plates. I found the text a little less informative than the plates but pictures are what I was looking for.

Classic Chinese Furniture has wonderful illustrations and goes into introductions of the furniture any layman can understand. Mr. Wang has given many details to the reader so that a better understanding, what to look for and and how to judge the quality of a piece can be learned. Pen drawings of the pieces help to illustrate the different parts and clearly show the reader how the piece is put together. I travel to China often and purchased this book in Shanghai. It was more expensive in the bookstore in China than what Amazon charges...

          5 out of 5 stars A must for collectors.......2002-03-03

If you truly appreciate antique Chinese furniture for its grace and beauty, but like me, you can't afford a zitan Southern official chair or huanghuali opium day bed, Wang Shixiang's book, with loads of gorgeous photographs, is the next best thing to owning the actual pieces. More a coffee table book, than a reference book for antique buyers. Still, it's one of the best books around on Chinese antique furniture.

          5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book.......2002-02-22

Truly beautiful coffee table book, with plenty of photos of Chinese furniture. A must-have for anyone who loves Chinese furniture. A bargain at the [low] price!

I have read this book over and over again. Being in the Antique Furnitue business, it has helped me with all my favorite collections. I have met Mr. Wangshi Xiang before, and I do respect and appreciate his hard work for studying the topic for almost 40 years. It is my belief that this book has reinforced the wave of collection of Chinese Antique Furniture. It is really sad that there are more authentic and rare pieces despered overseas than in China now.
