Book Description

The Garden of Eden as the ideal and untouched site of life's creation persists in popular thought, even as we have uncovered a lengthy fossil record and developed a scientific understanding of evolution. The continent of Africa is a good candidate for Eden: its generally warm climate, rich vegetation, and variety of animal species lend themselves easily to such a comparison. Yet in the time since the first primates appeared millions of years ago, Africa has undergone profound alterations in physical geography, climate, and biota.

Linking the evidence of the past with that of the present, this exquisitely illustrated guide examines the evolution of the mammalian fauna of Africa within the context of dramatic changes over the course of more than 30 million years of primate presence. The book covers such topics as dating, continental drift, and global climate change and the likely motors of evolution as well as the physical evolution of the African continent, including present and past climates, and the major determinants of plant and mammal distributions. The authors discuss human evolution as a part of the larger pattern of mammalian evolution while responding to the unique interest that we have in our own past.

The meticulous reconstructions of fossil mammals in this book are the result of detailed anatomical research. Restorations of mammalian musculature and appearance take into account the affinities between fossil forms and extant species in order to make well-founded inferences about unpreserved animal attributes. Environmental reconstructions benefit from the authors' visits to more than a dozen wildlife preserves in five African countries as well as the use of an extensive database of published studies on the evolution of landscapes on the continent. A fascinating read and a visual feast, Evolving Eden lays the foundation for a deeper appreciation of contemporary African wildlife.

3 out of 5 stars Not an excellent book.......2007-06-28

This books seems to negelect most informations about the molecular data. Also the the discussion about the natural history of extant and extinct species are a bit brief.

5 out of 5 stars Just Right.......2005-10-25

This book threads the fine line between the Laymen and the professional. Just the right amount of info without getting stuck in specialization on any one beast.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated by Built Up Fossils.......2004-10-28

Africa, expecially as it appears to have been over time is probably the closest piece of land that might have been considered Eden.

For some 35 million years Africa has been the home of an ever widening number of animals. This beautifully illustrated work takes fossil finds, compares them with their closest living relatives and builds up what these animals probably looked like when they were alive.

The definition of animals in this book certainly includes humans and their African ancestors. More than just viewing the fossil remains, the built up people show a closer relationship to modern humans that just looking at the bare fossil.

      Book Description

Movie-Struck Girls examines women's films and filmgoing in the 1910s, a period when female patronage was energetically courted by the industry for the first time. By looking closely at how women were invited to participate in movie culture, the films they were offered, and the visual pleasures they enjoyed, Shelley Stamp demonstrates that women significantly complicated cinemagoing throughout this formative, transitional era. Growing female patronage and increased emphasis on women's subject matter did not necessarily bolster cinema's cultural legitimacy, as many in the industry had hoped, for women were not always enticed to the cinema by dignified, uplifting material, and once there, they were not always seamlessly integrated in the social space of theaters, nor the new optical pleasures of film viewing. In fact, Stamp argues that much about women's films and filmgoing in the postnickelodeon years challenged, rather than served, the industry's drive for greater respectability.

White slave films, action-adventure serial dramas, and women's suffrage photoplays all drew female audiences to the cinema with stories aimed directly at women's interests and with advertising campaigns that specifically targeted female moviegoers. Yet these examples suggest that women's patronage was built with stories focused on sexuality, sensational thrill-seeking, and feminist agitation, topics not normally associated with ladylike gentility. And in each case concerns were raised about women's conduct at cinemas and the viewing habits they enjoyed, demonstrating that women's integration into motion picture culture was not as smooth as many have thought.

The Early History of Women *And* Film (Not "In" Film)

Every so often, we women complain about women in the media. When it comes to movies, we complain about the diminished roles for maturing women; we complain about the way women are portrayed in films; we complain about the history of films, most notably The Hollywood Code which seemed to destroy & limit our potential as women in film -- on both sides of the camera. But long before all that, in the very beginning, it was even worse.

In 'Movie-Struck Girls: Women & Motion Picture Culture After the Nickelodeon', by Shelley Stamp, we learn more than just the roles of women in films or behind the camera -- we learn about women's role as patrons of cinema.

The book is an eye-opening look at a long ignored part of American film history -- and an astonishing look at the history of women as media consumers.

Stamp spent over ten years researching for this book. She studied trade journals, fan magazines, ephemera, and many official documents and records at the National Board of Censorship Archives in New York City, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles, & the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Many of the films she reviewed are no longer readily available, let alone circulating, but can be found at the Library of Congress & the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

It sounds like a huge undertaking, & I thank her for it. 'Movie-Struck Girls' presents a wealth of information that I had never known before.

In 'Movie-Struck Girls' you learn all about these long-hidden details of American film history & it's collision with turn of the century American values -- including titles, studios, stars, organizations, & political figures. For a person who adore film & is a passionate feminist, this is a great read. Why it's as thrilling as those old adventure serial films!

Stamp does a great job of presenting this long ignored part of film -- and women's -- history. It's definitely an academic read, which means it is meaty enough for those who want to further search for clues, artifacts & films themselves. It may not read like a novel, but it's so fascinating & full of details, it won't disappoint. Fans of film, especially silent films, cannot call themselves educated in the subject unless they know this history. And women, well, we start to see a much larger image emerge -- our complaints regarding women in the media have much deeper roots than we previously knew.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories as well as great advice.......2007-01-27

This book is almost a journal of one woman's journey of taking her art from craft to business. It is packed with wisdom and told warmly from the heart. It is a book to be read and reread... just to make sure you didn't miss anything. This is NOT your traditional how-to book. I totally enjoyed getting to know the author through her writing and riding along with her on her journeys.

      4 out of 5 stars Holy Moly - what a great book!.......2006-11-10

If you have ever wanted to carve your own rubber stamps and/or start your own business, this book is a must read. It is very down to earth - no fancy publishing here, but it gets to the heart of what crafters want and need to know about moving from a hobby to a successful national business.

5 out of 5 stars helpful even if you don't start a business.......2006-08-03

This book offers a lot of ideas, even for people who are not planning to make art their sole source of income.

5 out of 5 stars Art with Soul.......2005-12-27

This book was such an inspiration to me and has profoundly influenced my own artistic journey. This isn't merely a card making business how-to book but, rather, it is an inspiring tale of one woman's journey as a writer and an artist and how she found her voice in the art world. Gloria shares with us in an open and honest way the good and the bad of creating cards and making a business of it. Unlike traditional business start-up books, this delves into the emotional side in a very personal way that invites the reader to explore and learn from the experience of a very successful and talented artist. It was a joy to read through this book and I keep referring back to it often for not only for inspiration and insight but, because it is encouraging as well. Every serious artist who is wanting to sell their work for profit should invest in the experience and lessons from someone who has been there and understands oh so well. As an instructor and professional artist myself, I recommend this book to all my students and have given away numerous copies as gifts as well.

5 out of 5 stars Personal insight with profound experience .......2005-09-21

This book was a real surprise for me. I was expecting to read another one of the How-to books on the business of Art, but luckily, this one is different!
Right from the first page you feel like you are talking to an old friend, you have not seen for a long time. And at the first meeting, she tells you what has happened to her since the last time you did see each other. It's a very personal book, but it does at the same time offer a lot of insights into the bussines of Art.
For me personally this was very important and very mind opening, and this in not just a phrase: one day I had a call from a publisher asking me, if I would like to write a book for them. This had been a livelong dream for me, but without reading Gloria Pages' book just shortly before having this call, I am sure, my answer would not have been the " YES", that I did give them! Even during the phone call I still had Gloria's words in my ear: Go for it! My book was published in May this year. Thank you, Gloria for helping me on the way to my dreams!!

I was very disappointed with this item. My 3 yr. old loves My Little Pony and loves to stamp. However, the stamps don't work very well at all. They hardly show up in the book no matter how hard you press them. Most of the pictures on the stamps are so small that my daughter can't even tell what they are. Needless to say, it ended up being a waste of money for us.

                Book Description

A Feminist Reader in Early Cinema marks a new era of feminist film scholarship. The twenty essays collected here demonstrate how feminist historiographies at once alter and enrich ongoing debates over visuality and identification, authorship, stardom, and nationalist ideologies in cinema and media studies. Drawing extensively on archival research, the collection yields startling accounts of women's multiple roles as early producers, directors, writers, stars, and viewers. It also engages urgent questions about cinema's capacity for presenting a stable visual field, often at the expense of racially, sexually, or class-marked bodies.

While fostering new ways of thinking about film history, A Feminist Reader in Early Cinema illuminates the many questions that the concept of "early cinema" itself raises about the relation of gender to modernism, representation, and technologies of the body. The contributors bring a number of disciplinary frameworks to bear, including not only film studies but also postcolonial studies, dance scholarship, literary analysis, philosophies of the body, and theories regarding modernism and postmodernism.

Reflecting the stimulating diversity of early cinematic styles, technologies, and narrative forms, essays address a range of topics—from the dangerous sexuality of the urban flâneuse to the childlike femininity exemplified by Mary Pickford, from the Shanghai film industry to Italian diva films—looking along the way at birth-control sensation films, French crime serials, "war actualities," and the stylistic influence of art deco. Recurring throughout the volume is the protean figure of the New Woman, alternately garbed as childish tomboy, athletic star, enigmatic vamp, languid diva, working girl, kinetic flapper, and primitive exotic.

                  Book Description

Motherhood, madness, and mayhem! This tell all journal of letters is about a dysfunctional family that can't quite get it right. It is heart wrenching, yet pain-staking funny how the main character deals with situations when they arise. "I'm not at all excited about going to my parent's house for a visit. Every time I think about it my anxiety level shoots sky high. If stress brings on my seizures then I should be doing the old shake and bake right about now? I don't believe the doctor knows what he's talking about." "I'm putting a clause in my will that if anyone contests it, they will lose everything. I'm leaving you my teeth and my toenail collection. Please don't say anything to my daughters. They don't know that I'm leaving you my prize possessions. I certainly don't want the bickering to begin, especially since I'm still alive!" The book is filled with hilarious ranting. If you have experienced dysfunction in your life then this book is something you should read. This book is strong, painfully honest, and nakedly candid.
