2 out of 5 stars Great diagrams but poorly presented.......2004-04-20

As mentioned in other reviews, the diagrams are great, but overall I feel that the book is not well presented. A better way to present the book would be to have more pages, with less diagrams on each page, and the labelling being on each diagram.

Found it distracting to look at the diagrams -- find the number on the diagram, and then to try to find the correct number on the other page -- that tells you the name of the various physical systems.

I would have been willing to pay more, if the book would have been presented better.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have".......2004-02-01

This is the best canine anatomy book for veterinary students. As a veterinary student myself, I find this book of great help. Each system of the dog is covered with a written forward into the topic in question. This is very well written and only a very basic knowledge of veterinary medicine is needed as the book is not aimed at only vets.
The diagrams of the dog are labelled with numbers which correspond to the opposite page and so this is a great book for testing yourself before exams!
If you have a general interest in what is under the skin of your dog or what that bone is bulging out from his elbow-this book is just as interesting/informative as it is to any vet student.
A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book.......2002-05-29

I thought I'd be tempted to take a color pencil and color the correct drawn anatomy parts, as I did in my nursing anatomy books. I am a nurse, and this book was a real eye opener. The only thing missing were the colors, for the smaller, more detailed illustrations that are necessary. The book is extremely detailed, and very very complete. There's alot of text, and some of it, I found boring. But, the illustrations make up for it. This would be an excellent book for a vet. student, or anyone, like myself, to learn more about dogs. I was exspecially interested in the fact that it was only about dogs, not cats, or other animals. This book is a good book for anyone's shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful drawings.......2001-03-02

Having read the review that 'accuses' British textbooks of being dry and like PBS productions of 50 years ago, I feel that I must stand up for this book. The drawings are exquisite, they are by far the most accurate in any anatomy text book, and they have a simplicity that adds to their impact. The text is a little minimalist, for it is really in the form of expanded labelling for the illustrations.

I have to say that I find the 'chatty' style of many US non-fiction and textbooks flippant and distracting from the subject. I much prefer an author who takes his subject seriously.

All my anatomical studies are based on this book. And look at the price - a real bargain. All those who are studying dog anatomy, be they veterinary students or show judges, are mistaken if this volume does not sit on their bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Dog Anatomy by Peter C. Goody.......2000-10-30

The core of "Dog Anatomy" are the 38 pages of detailed black and white drawings of the various physical systems (skeletal, blood, etc.) of the dog. The labeled illustrations are accompanied by copious notes of explanation. Medical terminology is explained in "plain language" as it occurs. Although this book is probably a "must" for a veterinary student the intended reader is the dog owner who is not a veterinary professional, such as myself. An effort is made to provide an understanding of what is inside a dog at a particular point by referencing interior dog anatomy by what can be seen and felt on the outside surface(s) of a dog. This approach achieves some success but the reader should resist the urge to assume more expertise than the book imparts. It can aid the dog owner in understanding what a veterinarian with years of experience is trying to describe but is no substitute for professional education and experience.

The only "down side" to this book is almost at the subliminal level. It was written and published in England. The English and American minds see and approach the world in slightly different ways. Simply put, the method of presentation is somewhat dry and seems more like American publications of 50 years ago than of the present. If you watch and like English programming on PBS you probably won't even notice. The cost of is cheap for an anatomy book.

4 out of 5 stars Captivating!.......2001-07-17

The storyline in this book was actually very engrossing. The biggest disappointment I had was with the dialogue. Some of the conversations were simply unrealistic. Even people who are Christians do not quote Scripture every time they open their mouths. I think the story was very good, and teaches all who read it not to worry and to consider the lilies.

5 out of 5 stars Great Positive Family Story with Adventure.......1998-11-14

The story stayed interesting and fast moving, with a balance of action and relationships. The solid, God fearing, family role model is a positive example of how to face adversity even in today's world. It reminds you of what really matters and the value of God and family.

Book Description

A tale of love, trials, and faith set against a wonderfully drawn portrait of San Francisco, Consider Lily is chick lit with a heart.
Lily Traywick thinks she must have been adopted. It’s easier than believing she’s actually related to Jane and Roland Traywick, her power-couple parents who own Traywick’s of San Francisco, the most chichi department store on the West Coast. While her parents party with Muccia in Milan and Gabbana in Paris, Lily hangs out at home in ratty jeans and an old T-shirt. She loves softball, guys, and Jesus, and she’s eager to make her own way in the world. Feeling that her life is on hold, she turns to her best friend Reagan Axness. Reagan, a fashionista who has it all, offers just the solution: a major life makeover.

Lily is soon dressing in the latest must-have fashions and pursuing a writing career. She’s even dating the “perfect” guy. But does he love her for who she really is? And will he be able to resist the tempting seductress who has her eye on him? As Lily’s old friends question her new way of life, and public scandal, family drama, and technological disasters add to her confusion, Lily is forced to consider whether her quest to have it all will cause her to lose everything that matters.

Hot off their debut success, Emily Ever After, “good-girl” chick-lit trailblazers Dayton and Vanderbilt return with a witty, refreshingly real story of a young woman’s adventures in the high-powered world of San Francisco high fashion.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars An OK read.......2007-01-09

Since Im a fashion freak, I was really excited to read this novel about a girl who comes from a family that dines and wines with designers such as Versace and Ralph Lauren.

Unfortunately, the book falls flat. The characters, the plot, even the fashion . . . they all fall flat. At times I found myself so bored that I had to put it down.

Also, even though Lily got this so called makeover from one of her best friends, she was still very much a fashion victim. It's like where did these authors get their fashion advice? They should have consulted with magazines such as Vogue or Bazaar because a fashion diva will not be caught dead wearing a pink mini skirt with a lime green top. That screams trashy not flashy!

My point is that everything about this novel is just not believable and some parts are absolutely boring.

Other than that, read at your own risk.

5 out of 5 stars Good girl lit gone right!.......2006-12-14

Lily Traywick is the daughter of the owners of huge and famous department store in San Francisco. She is poised to inherit it in the future. However, Lily does not want to continue life working with clothes. She spends time with her two best friends and tries to figure out why she's not able to get a boyfriend. After a makeover she meets Sam, another employee at the store. Soon they begin to date, and Lily starts to really enjoy life. Then Sam's friend Delia comes to town, wrecking havoc into their relationship. Lily jots all these events in her blog, writing about everything that's happened with Sam, her friends, her parents, anyone she's come into contact with. When her blog's secrets become public to those who are in it, it'll take a miracle for her to recover.

I thought this was a fun and cool read. I really like this new Chick-lit genre and this book definitely fits in it. My favorite scene in the book would have to be the hockey game where she has to wear that shark head. I just about died laughing. I know how Lily feels about being one of the guys. It happened to me too, they are so used to hanging out with you that they don't realize you're actually a girl. I'm glad Lily kept rejecting Sam when he tried to come back to her after leaving Delia. He needed to suffer after what he had put her through. To be honest, if I had been in Lily's shoes at that point, I would have been severely depressed. Everyone had turned on her even though she had just been telling the truth about them. To be fair though, I don't know why Lily just hadn't used code names when writing in her blog. If you plan on spilling out details of your life, you can't use real names because you never know who will be reading about it. I did enjoy them though. (Although do you realize that fictional characters always get more hits than real people do?) I also appreciated how Lily is a Christian that is strong about her beliefs (she wouldn't date Sam at first because she wasn't sure) and wants her friends to become believers, yet she is not the pushy overbearing stereotypical Christian like other characters in the book.

Excellent book, one I would recommend anyone (Christian or non-Christian) to read. This is a fun read that everyone can enjoy because everyone know how it feels to be in Lily's shoes.

3 out of 5 stars Consider Lily.......2006-08-06

In the tradition of chick lit,Lily Traywick obsesses over almost every aspect of her life, from her social life (or lack of it) to her unsatisfying job at Traywicks, the family department store and the fact that at her advanced age of 20something, she still lives with her parents. In an effort to do something positive about her situation, she follows the advice of a friend and changes her hair and the way she dresses. She attracts the attention of Sam,a hot co-worker. Just when it appears that Lily can't be any more self-absorbed or self-centered, and the reader is ready to write off Lily, the pace of the story picks up, particularly when one of Sam's old female friends makes an appearance and Lily discovers her best friend, who also works at Traywick's is stealing from the company. Lily's life implodes: Sam breaks off with her and her previously anonymous blog becomes public, causing all of Lily's nearest and dearest's to become angry with her. What makes this story unusual is that Lily identifies herself as a Christian and makes frequent references to church groups and activities. But when she realizes how she has hurt her friends and family, she needs to put her Christian faith into practice and seek forgiveness from those whom she has inadvertently betrayed. A fun read that will have readers rooting for Lily.

5 out of 5 stars after EMILY EVER AFTER? how can this be better?.......2006-07-05

I loved EMILY EVER AFTER the debut chick-lit novel of these two steady and easy to take Christian novelists! They rate at the top of my list! I read all kinds of books - not even fiction mostly? but I was enthralled by Anne Dayton's and May Vanderbilt's newest and easy to listen and read NOT preachy love story. One grows up with the characters and learns about LIFE but not JESUS in totally inappropriate ways as some Christian novelists tend to do with their evangelical works. I applaud Anne and May once again in their writing about to be a true "Christian?" One lives the life and not yells it from the roof-tops! Top of my list of to read summer books. Or any season books actually!

It's even better than the first book Emily Ever After. I hope there is a sequel coming soon. These authors are terrific!,

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clever & witty modern Christian novel.......2007-09-06

"Consider Lily" is a clever surprise of a novel! Often I lean more towards reading historical Christian fiction rather than modern, simply because Christian novels set in modern-day are usually filled with flat characters that lack vibrancy, in an effort to make them seem like "good Christians". I was thrilled to find that this novel manages to accurately and entertainingly portray a modern Christian woman who is spunky, funny, relatable, AND is grounded in her faith.
The descriptions of Lily's church friends and singles group were hilariously true-to-life, her family and friends were flawed and loveable, and the struggles they dealt with were heart-felt and realistic.
This book is certainly funny enough, culturally relevant enough, and un-preachy enough to share with non-Christians; however I think a third of the humor will lost on a reader who hasn't spent a lot of time in church. It's not a terribly deep or theologically challenging story, but overall, it's a great, light read that is sure to make you laugh.

Grade: A-

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-10-13

Lily Traywick has never had a date (not a real one), dislikes her job and at 28 still lives at home with her parents and grandmother. Enter her friend Reagan who convinces Lily that her boy problems are because of the way that she presents herself and so they enter into a bet - Reagan gets to make Lily over and if she doesn't succeed in getting her a date (and more) then she will go to church (a big sacrifice for the definitely non Christian Reagan). Through in a fair amount of heartache, humour and chaos along the way and you have Consider Lily.

Having had a mixed reaction to Emily Ever After I wasn't sure what to expect with Consider Lily. I'm not usually one to give a book five stars but this one I just loved. I laughed and I nodded and in a few places I felt like the authors had crawled into my head! Finally a Christian chick lit book where the main character is both Christian and real at the same time! Lily isn't perfect and that is one of the most endearing things about her. I too love how she has friends who aren't Christians, knocks back the odd glass of wine and have a real faith that has cracks in it. I would recommend this book to any of my friends who enjoy chick lit - Christian or not. Thank you Anne and May for finally writing something that I could relate to! Looking forward to the next instalment!

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Weekend Read!.......2006-08-04

I loved this book! I must admit I am not much of a reader, but after I picked up and read these two authors' first book "Emily Ever After"...I have been waiting for their 2nd book ever since!! "Consider Lily" is just as great and in my opinion even better than their first. It is light, fun, girly and innocent. I love that the authors have chosen New York (Emily Ever After) and San Francisco (in this book)as the main characters background setting. They capture the feel beautifully!

If you are in a place where you are looking for that perfect romantic comedy on dvd to cozy up to and your favorites are still there, but you need something new right now. Grab this book and read it instead! You'll be just as fulfilled if not more!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Suprise.......2006-07-19

I picked this book up on a whim while trying to find something for a business trip. What was a wonderful suprise it turned out to be! I couldn't put the thing down trying to get to the end of the book. It is truthful, realistic, funny and Christian. I've recommended it to many and none have been disappointed. I also recommend there first book Emily Ever After...can't wait for the next!!

4 out of 5 stars delightful contemporary tale.......2006-06-24

In San Francisco, Lily Traywick knows that she is 180 degrees different from her perfectly fashioned parents as she prefers softball on the nearby sandlots while they enjoy an evening in Paris. She scoffs at gene pool theory as their DNA must have skipped her without a trace. Her parents own Traywick's of San Francisco, the chicest department store in the state. Lily, knowing she is going to own the store one day works in the Silver spoon children's wear, but is not that good at selling.

Lily has never been on a date, but her best friend Reagan Axness, who should have been the Traywick daughter, helps her with a makeover and arranges a date with Daniel. Lily has a good time, but realizes she and Daniel are going to remain friends. New store employee Sam March likes Lily and begins to date her. They fall in love, but Lily fears that he desires the new glamour image not the real sweatshirt soul that she truly is.

Anne Dayton and May Vanderbilt provide a delightful contemporary tale that emphasizes "to thine own self be true" especially if you want others to be true with you and to believe that you are being truthful with them. Lily is a wonderful protagonist struggling to make her parents proud of her, but not really understanding what they, especially her mom, wants of her until her mother takes drastic action late in the tale. The support cast, even Sam to a degree, enable the reader to better understand Lily's trepidations as much as from her self-analysis asides to the reader. CONSIDER LILY is a fine character study starring a somewhat typical chick lit heroine, who fans will adore.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous pictures & relevant information.......2006-11-30

This book has great drawings that look more like photographs of some plants mentioned in the Bible. It is by no means an exhaustive reference. It quotes the biblical background first and then tells about the plant. It includes how it was used, how common it was, what it looked like and how it grew, etc. For example, it tells the wheat/weeds/mustard seed story from the NT parable, then has a full-page painting of wheat, mustard and darnel (the weed) next to each other, gives the latin name for each, and then writes this:
'For more than 8,000 years, various species of wheat have been cultivated in Asia Minor, and in Bible times, wheat was the main field crop. Since it was grown without irrigation, it suffered seriously in years of drought, and disastrous famines often resulted.

The 'weeds' referred to here were probably darnel grass or 'tares,' a hardy grass that grows only in grain fields. Before its seed heads form, it looks very much like wheat, and its seeds are about the same size and shape as wheat seeds, so they easily become mixed with the threshed grain. they not only adulterate the wheat but also can carry a poisonous fungus that causes blindness or even death.

The mustard seed in this passage is probably that of the common black mustard. In powdered form, these seeds have since earliest times been used for flavoring and medicine, but the Hebrews valued them chiefly for the oil they produce. In northern gardens, mustard is usually no more than three or four feet tall, but in hot countries it sometimes grows ten to fifteen feet high, with a stalk as thick as a man's arm."

I think it's a great book - great info, biblical relevance and great pictures (they're all like the cover basically).

Book Description

Elizabeth Buchan garnered both praise and a loyal readership with the bestselling Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman and The Good Wife Strikes Back. Now her many new fans can discover one of her beloved early novels.

It is the summer of 1929. The Hinton Dysart estate is dying from lack of money, and Kit Dysart, the heir, sees no way out. Then, at his sister's wedding, he meets the vibrant Daisy Chudleigh and her cousin, the heiress Matty Verrall. In love with Daisy but troubled by his family's decline, Kit chooses to marry Matty, though neither Kit nor Daisy is able to forget the other. When Matty, growing increasingly unhappy in her troubled, empty marriage, decides to re-create the estate's garden, she discovers solace and a gift of which she never dreamed. A glorious fusion of love and gardening, Consider the Lily is a classic and poignant novel of love, loss, and, ultimately, a new flowering between the two world wars.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving book.......2006-01-21

I found this book to be very moving and impressive. Buchan sets the mood wonderfully and the title 'Consider the Lily' is very apt. Her characters were interesting and sympathetic without being pushy. Should we sympathize with the lovers who cannot love? Or Mattie who is plain but rich? The ghost story was quite nice too, very gothic. All in all, a book worth re-reading!

4 out of 5 stars Evocative.......2005-08-20

Set in that strange neverland time between the two world wars, Consider the Lily Has an almost mystical charm about it. Aristocratic Kit Dysart is loved by two women, one being the upper class but penniless Daisy..beautiful but self willed and dangerously feckless, and the other, her cousin Mattie, rather plain, sickly and orphaned, but enormously wealthy. Kits' family fortunes have been badly eroded, shockingly mishandled by his stubborn, irascible father who returned from the battle fields of France after WW1, a broken and bitter man. Lack of money forces Kit to ignore his passion for Daisy and to accept Mattys' proposal of marriage, so even though the marriage is one of convenience, the fortune she brings with her restores the family home and standing. The story isn't as plebian as perhaps I've painted it as it is peopled by diverse charcters, broken ex-soldiers with broken spirits, and a new class emerging in this restless time between the wars. Elizabeth Buchan writes beautifully with an underlying tinge of melancholy which fits the feeling of the moment...a feeling of impermanence and shadows.

2 out of 5 stars Descriptive talent but depressing.......2002-09-19

I have to agree with Calyndula on this one--and more so. This book shows real talent in creating a sense of place and mood, but I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters enough to finish the story. With Perfect Love, her next book, Buchan found a more sympathetic voice--recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Slow Going.......2001-03-25

This is a haunting and sad book...the writing is skilled and evocative, the characters are interesting. But it is SO evocative that I found myself depressed every time I entered the stark and dreary world that Buchan so skillfully creates. Even the gardening bits failed to offset the general miasma of gloom that permeates this book, at least for me. Buchan is a fine writer, but this book is hard going, albeit beautifully written. It has a Bronte-like feel, but without the passion. And the ghostly elements left me unmoved, which is unusual for me. Read it for the fine writing, but don't expect a quick or lighthearted experience.

        Book Description

Nicholas Trumpeter is a young clergyman trapped inside a loveless marriage. His wife, Gillian, is an atheist whom he has learnt to endure. A passionate affair with the lovely Danae, daughter of his millionaire patron, becomes his main pursuit in life. The pressure of too little work and the boredom of parish community duties take their toll on Nicholas' sanity - until he eventually finds a new role for himself as a useful member of society. A tale of comic brilliance and cruel irony.

5 out of 5 stars Among the funniest.......2006-07-07

I count "Consider the Lillies" among the funniest books I've ever read. Some will consider the humor too juvenile, but then they probably never got Waugh senior, or Monty Python, for that matter. This book's place in my heart is close to all of Wodehouse and Amis's "Lucky Jim," just down the hall from Boyd's "Good Man in Africa" and Italo Svevo's "Confessions of Zeno," and within shouting distance of Flannery O'Connor's stories.
