5 out of 5 stars The Best Dog Breed Book!!.......2004-07-03

This is a great dog breed book! Not only are the pictures wonderful (excellent speciments of each breed), but I love the information and history offered on each breed. A summary of the breed standard is included, as well as, temperment and level of activity, potential health problems, and growth information on each breed. I have looked at many breed books and this is my absolute favorite.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this book.......2004-02-08

This book was really disappointing. Over the last 15 years, our family has owned an Irish Setter, Lab, and Standard Poodle. We bought several books to start researching other breeds prior to beginning a search for a new dog. In the preface of this book, it says that the authors of the book have surveyed breeders and owners of the breeds and they trust that the contributors have been candid and realistic. Well they weren't. Do you think the breeders and owners might have been a little partial to their respective breeds??? Much of the information was sugar coated. "Paws to Consider" by Kilcommons and Wilson is a much more objective book. It is based on the authors 45 years of combined experience as dog trainers.

5 out of 5 stars Truly great book.......2001-02-14

I have several dog books, but this is my favorite. It has lots of wonderful color pictures of the dogs, and detailed information on each breed. An excellent book for dog lovers, as well as an exceptional refrence for anyone researching dog breeds for themselves.

This book has alot of information about each breed but not alot of general dog information. Thats what I liked about it. It has alot of breeds listed, with 4 of 5 photos of each one. It describes the AKC standard, health problems, and characteristics of each breed. A great coffee table book for dog lovers.

2 out of 5 stars GOLDEN RETRIEVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-25

Uh... yeah... choosing the perfect GOLDEN RETRIEVER for you and your family. The review for the Cairn Terrier in the book (a breed I like) makes it sound like they are snappy, enerjetic, and tough guys. 'He's not a big boned tower of pateince. He can't take the indiscriminate pounding some very small children might mete out.' Shetland Sheepdog: snappy, annoying little breeds that be scared of cars if never exposed. Yeah, that's with all breeds. It never mentions their trainability-they're one of the smartest breeds. And they say that they are bad and poor if treated badly! 'Train them easily and gently and you can maintain their sweet temperaments.' The Golden Retriever review (not that I don't like them) talks about how they are the best family dog, are easy to care for, and are just the best, best, best dog ever! I some other reviews it also says that you shouldn't get this breed- get a Golden Retriever. That is mean to other breeds and their breeders!

5 out of 5 stars The best dog choosing book.......2000-06-02

I wish I could put another star on this book. It tells you everything you need to get the right dog for you, your family, and your living conditions. This book also tells you exactly what to look for in a dog and why you're looking for it. Choosing the Perfect Dog for You and Your Family also tells you more than enough information about every dog that is good with children. It gives you many helpful tips on training, housebreaking, and even naming your dog. Last and best of all, this book tells you about how dogs think, and by learning how dogs think, you will not raise a wild and out of control dog.

There is information on the different needs of different breeds, advice on adopting from shelters, suggestions on urban etiquette for walking and cleaning up after your dog,and for what to do when meeting other dogs with their human companions.

Illustrated with pictures of dogs interacting with other dogs, people, and the city around them, City Dog is an invaluable guide for any city dweller who lives, or hopes to live, with a canine companion.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Really Good Book.......2003-01-01

This is a neat book. It affirms the choice of having a dog in the city and dispels a lot of the "dogs are happier in the country" mythology.

It also tells you what to do to make your dog a good urban citizen, traits missing from so many of the dogs in our neighborhood -- aggressive, overbarking, impinging on the general peace and quiet. All of which backlash in overbearing city dog ordinances.

This is a good, comprehensive health and positive attitude book for city dog owners.

5 out of 5 stars Selecting a dog which would be best suited.......2002-09-14

City Dog: Choosing And Living Well With A Dog In Town by animal expert Patricia Curtis is a very useful and highly recommended guide to selecting a dog which would be best suited to a particular living accommodation and lifestyle. City Dog is to be commended for its wealth of tips, tricks, and techniques for exercising one's pet in a city environment, adopting dogs from shelters, urban pet etiquette, and a great deal more, all presented in a "reader friendly" manual written especially for the non-specialist general reader in search of a suitable canine companion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all dog owners........2000-04-16

This book has been indispensable in raising our two dogs, especially through the puppy years. A must have and a great gift for new dog owners.

4 out of 5 stars best, most complete, inexpensive puppy and dog care book........1997-08-06

The best and most complete, inexpensive puppy and dog care is required reading for all interested in dogs and an excellent gift for the dog owner you know. Despite this the book has several weaknesses. First, it needs a new revision, the last being 1990. Coronavirus, a serious disease, especially for puppies is unmentioned. Crate-training, the proven, most effective means of house-training a puppy, gets little attention. Second, the author does not mention animal shelters or humane societies as a source of obtaining a dog and the author's attitude toward mixed breed dogs especially, may be repulsive to some. He states that mixed-breeds are often "given away" and that "(W)hat one gets for nothing is often worth nothing". In fact, every dog, pure or mixed can provide love and devotion that are valuable beyond price. Every dog, pure or mixed, has the same physical and emotional development and the same needs for care and training. Mr Miller's classic provides this information inexpensively and fairly completely. Those of us who care about mixed breed dogs will find it worthwhile to control their temper and appreciate the contents.

Sonoma County's Jimtown Store, a country market that was dilapidated until it was bought and renovated by Carrie Brown and John Werner in 1987, now serves uniquely good food to locals and visitors alike. Brown and Werner's The Jimtown Store Cookbook, written with Michael McLaughlin, offers 130 of Jimtown's best recipes--robust yet sophisticated dishes that range from Pumpkin Chipotle Soup and Paella Salad with Seared Tuna and Shellfish to Maple-Glazed Meat Loaf and Duck and Olive Ragout with Buttered Noodles. The store also has committed itself to local food producers, and their products help define Jimtown's globe-spanning yet all-American cuisine. This is a truly accomplished blend, and readers will find a ready supply of tantalizing recipes for everyday and special-occasion eating.

Brown and Werner first spotted Jimtown on the Fourth of July, so it's only fitting that they've developed a mouthwatering barbecue repertoire, with many accompanying sauces, condiments, pickles, and relishes. These signature items include Romesco Sauce and Lupe's Tomatillo Salsa; a number of these are fitting accompaniments to dishes like Grilled Fish Tacos, Roast Pork Loin with Bacon and Rosemary, and Grilled Chicken Breasts with Herbed Honey Butter. Other Jimtown specialties include sandwiches like roast beef with horseradish sauce and desserts such as Bittersweet Chocolate Pinwheel Cake and Buttermilk Pie. With the purveyors' cooking tips and menus for entertaining, the book, like the store, rewards digging into. --Arthur Boehm

              Book Description

One sunny summer day in 1987, Carrie Brown and John Werner happened on Jimtown, an abandoned country store in northern California. Founded more than 100 years earlier, the Jimtown Store had held fast to its original building and its old-fashioned charm. Enchanted by its possibilities, Carrie and John decided to turn Jimtown into a new kind of country store: a gathering place for people to share down-to-earth, honest food in a beautiful setting.

The new Jimtown quickly became a favorite, offering exceptional main courses, soups, salads, sandwiches, sweets, and breakfast goods, all made from fresh local produce. Now everyone can enjoy the dishes that have made Jimtown so popular, faithfully recorded by Michael McLaughlin, who collaborated on the legendary Silver Palate cookbooks. Each of the more than 135 recipes blends time-honored simplicity with updated flavors and a modern-day appreciation of quality ingredients. From sophisticated starters such as Crisp Grilled Dates with Manchego and Bacon to their famous Pan-Fried Petaluma Duck Burgers to such homey desserts as the delicious Buttermilk Pie, the recipes are all accessible and imaginative. Unencumbered by national boundaries, The Jimtown Store Cookbook offers a tasty bazaar of international food. Also included are cooking tips, menus for entertaining, and as a welcome bonus, colorful profiles of local vendors. So invite the Jimtown spirit into your home and enjoy the bounties of a very special country store.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite.......2002-08-20

This has quickly become the cookbook I turn to most often (and I have hundreds of them). Everything I've tried has been so flavorful and so easy to pull off. The roasted figs and Indian cashews are now a cocktail party staple (and I keep getting calls for the recipe). Same goes for the cheese and pecan crackers. The bourbon-marinaded steak has made me a much more frequent meat-eater. And just this past weekend I made the incredibly easy buttermilk pie, to much fanfare. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's OUTSTANDING.

              5 out of 5 stars Seasonal best--all year long........2002-05-09

From a small-town country store in the Northern California wine region, comes a great collection of recipes and entertaining ideas using a variety of seasonal products. Authors Carrie Brown and John Werner (with a wonderful assist from cookbook pro Michael McLaughlin) have compiled the very best of seasonal recipes and menu ideas used in the Jimtown Store and its catering business. The recipes are clear and easy to follow (though I wish that the publisher had worked harder to print the COMPLETE recipe on 1 or 2 facing pages--flipping the page in the middle of food prep is a real hassle!). Overall, though, it is a nicely written volume, which provides ideas for springtime suppers, autumn tailgate parties, Fourth of July barbecues, as well as holiday meals. There is an extensive chapter on salads of all sorts, plus another on sauces, condiments, and relishes, just to give us a few new twists on some old stand-by themes. There are some great weekend ideas in the chapter entitled Breakfast Baking. I've already made the maple-glazed meatloaf for dinner (leftovers make terrific sandwiches), and am now planning Grilled Steak with Backyard Bourbon Marinade as well as Apple-Buttermilk Slaw for some weekend lunch guests. Just in time for summer entertaining, this book is destined to become a year-round classic in my kitchen!

5 out of 5 stars Jimtown takes the cake!.......2002-04-19

One of those unique cookbooks where you'll want to make every recipe, and where you'll actually be able to. Jimtown's style is unfussy, focused on flavor and experience. These recipes mix old and new, national and international cuisine with witty and informative writing. I'm busy working my way through making the recipes and haven't had a dud yet!

Anna Pump grew up on a farm in Germany, near the Danish border, surrounded by a bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, home-baked bread, and hand-churned butter. After moving to the U.S. in the 1980s, Pump established Loaves and Fishes, a catering and take-out shop in the seaside yet rural part of Long Island, New York, known as The Hamptons. She then opened a bed-and-breakfast called The Bridgehampton Inn in 1994.

Pump's cooking relies on excellent fresh ingredients in season, so her 175 recipes are grouped as Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Grilled Chicken Salad, succulent from breasts marinated with soy, sesame oil, and white wine; Potato and Corn Salad with unexpected fresh herbs; and Spinach Salad with Sliced Peaches are typical Spring/Summer dishes Pump offers. Reflecting Scandinavian influences in her cooking, dessert might bring the luxury of fresh currants and raspberries transformed into Red Grits with Cream. (Once made with barley meal, hence its name, corn or potato starch is now used to thicken this ruby jewel of a dish.)

Fridays, year round, Pump bakes a huge ham glazed with marmalade, apple cider, and mustard. Guests enjoy slices of it with their eggs at breakfast and in sandwiches later in the day. You may prefer it for dinner, accompanied by Pump's cauliflower, mashed and roasted with garlic and olive oil. Complete the meal with a Macadamia Nut Tart, cranberries studding its pecan pie-rich filling. Sixteen color photos and short poems and quotes praising the good life punctuate this book with charming thoughts. --Dana Jacobi

                    Book Description

Here is an irresistible collection of recipes for every meal and every season, from the proprietor of Loaves and Fishes, the distinguished catering and prepared-food establishment in Sagaponak, Long Island, and The Bridgehampton Inn.

At The Bridgehampton Inn, Anna Pump pampers all of her guests as if each were a personal friend, which is, no doubt, why they return year after year. At Loaves and Fishes, each dish seems exactly as though it had been created in a regular home kitchen.

Now, with Country Weekend Entertaining, she shares her secrets so that home cooks, too, can soothe and pamper guests with simple, elegant, and delicious meals, from breakfast through dinner, all year long. In fact, instead of waiting for company, you can treat yourself and your family like guests and enjoy dishes such as Anna's Scrambled Eggs with Cream Cheese, Fresh Chives, and Popovers; her Grilled Veal Chops with Peach and Coriander Relish; and her Crumb-Topped Coffee Cake. Impressive enough for any formal event, every dish in this treasure trove of original recipes is nevertheless simple enough to prepare at whim, without waiting for a special occasion.

Arranged by season and illustrated with beautifully evocative color photographs, the more than 175 recipes in this book are certain to become the favorites of discerning home cooks everywhere.

                    3 out of 5 stars Good Cooking.......2003-09-22

I've had this book for 3 years now, and finally felt the urge to write a review because of the lack of reviews on this site. It is, put quity simply, a good cooking cookbook. Anna is a friendly writer, who doesn't name drop like other cookbok authors who live in our area do. The recipes are not way "out there" and the home cook can make them, just fine. I'm awaiting Anna's next cookbook, hoping there will be one.

                    5 out of 5 stars A must-read for any southerner.......1999-01-14

This is an interesting, delightful read, which will make any Southerner, and, for that matter, any American, stop and think about the way things were. As suggested by Guice in the foreword, "There is hardly a 'plain vanilla' or 'B-flat' sentence in the entire book," and, indeed, there is not, as this book reads like a story, as opposed to a typical historical record. The author quite successfully describes "what happened" in terms of the tactile, visual, olfactory and auditory. A terrific account by a fascinating historian.
