Douglas Florian (Insectlopedia, The Mammalabilia) is at it again. The 21 poems and paintings in his new collection, Bow Wow Meow Meow, will tickle young dog and cat loversand just about everyone else, too. Florian's painting of a poodle, essentially a riot of curls and a pink hair bow, accompanies a four-line concrete poem cleverly typeset in swirls on the opposite page:
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls,
Which makes poodle boys look like poodle girls.
The curls may have whirls, while the whirls may have swirls.
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls.
Florian has fun with bulldogs, pointers, Siamese, and Manx, but he doesn't limit himself to domestic breeds. Wolves, lions, and ocelot ("Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles ocelot") are also featured. All the paintings have wonderful juvenile appeal-many of them are flat-out funny-and the leopard painting, in particular, is worth the price of the book. In fact, you may need two copies: one for framing and one to savor with the kids. (All ages) --Jennifer Lindsay

My 5-year-old granddaughter had me read it over and over. Now she quotes it. I think she has the whole thing memorized.
Bow Wow Meow Meow poem book is wow wow!.......2006-03-15
Hi! You can call me StoryMaker. Bow Wow Meow Meow is a great and unique poem book that focuses on cats, dogs, and their relatives. When we got it from the library, it was a much darker pink then it is in the Amazon.com photo. I memorized many poems in it. There are great illustrations and on the back, you will probably see two paintings, one of a cat and one of the dog. If you look closely, the dog has the word "cat" written on it and the cat has the word "dog" on it. An example of one of the poems is:
"Who always yanks the tail of the Manx?"
Short poem, isn't it? Here's another short one:
"Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles oc-elot."
Don't worry, that's not as long as they get. For example, "Dog Log" is much longer, therefore I haven't memorized it. Great poems and lots of humor, too. However, I do not like how they insult bulldogs in their bulldog poem. Everyone is giving bulldogs a bad reputation because long ago bulldogs held on to bull's noses and were swung around. Bulldogs are nicer nowadays. Overall, a nice poem book all about pets, wolves, and every type of wild cat. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

As always, Mr. Florian writes and illustrates poetry on a young child's level. His poetry is short and to the point, and his illustrations are extremely creative. "The Poodles" and "The Dalmatian" is a great example of utilizing the features of the animal in the poem format. Mr. Florian gets young children excited about poetry and shows them that poetry can be uncomplicated and fun.

Twenty-one brief, humorous poems.......2003-04-07
Poet and painter Douglas Florian barks up the right tree in the young people poetry month release, "Bow Wow Meow Meow: It's Rhyming Cats and Dogs." Twenty-one brief, humorous poems about a kennel of dog and cat varieties playfully prowl its pages, accompanied by childlike watercolor portraits of each species being analyzed in verse. (Another quirky pleasure comes from the fact that Florian's loose, playful watercolors were painted on primed brown paper bags with bits of collage.) Setting the stage for the book's first half is "Dog Log" with its deadpan "to do" list of the average dog: "Rolled out of bed./ Scratched my head./ Brought the mail./ Wagged my tail.../ Chewed a shoe --/ Table, too." The next ten spreads all focus on a different doggie from the bulldog to wolf. Typical is "The Chihuahua" which manages to hilariously evoke the sound of the little beast: "Chihuahua seems a sorry sight:/ So small in stature, weight, and height./ But it can bark a brouhaha: / Chi-hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua!" Segregating the cats from the dogs, the second half is devoted to the felines, starting with the lilting "Cat Chat" introduction, and ends with "The Black Panther": "Black on black / With big eyes green --- / At night the panther's sight is keen,/ A stalking shadow, sly and sleek,/ That every night plays hide-and-seek." As a poetry collection, this is the best-conceived, least-pretentious and most-fun work in years. The idea is simplicity at its best, perfectly conceived and cleverly executed with a just-right balance of smarts and playfulness. The witty, insightful nature of the poems is sure to delight all ages, particularly fans of ee cummings, Ogden Nash and Bennett Cerf. Even concrete poetry admirers will pleasantly note the subtly original ways in which simple type layouts are occasionally used to enhance the rhythms and rhymes, such as the lines of "The Poodles" which are each set in a tight swirl, mimicking their subject's "oodles and oodles or curls." Doggone good. To borrow a pun from Florian, it would "puzzle ocelot" if this didn't end up an award-winner by year's end.
Book Description
An essential-and essentially hilarious!-guide to the ancient practice of canine yoga.
One afternoon in her backyard, Gerry Olin Greengrass sat gazing at her dog, Cocoa, as he stretched his forepaws out in front of him and leisurely raised his hindquarters to the sky. It was a position she had seen him assume hundreds of times before, but it was only in this moment that it finally dawned upon her: her dog was practicing yoga!
Thus began Greengrass's journey to discover the what, why, and how of this heretofore undocumented canine spiritual discipline (in a human language, anyway). The glorious result of all of these patient hours spent observing dogs in deepest communion with their inner beings? Bow Wow Yoga-a complete guide to canine yoga for dog and loving master alike.
With detailed instructions on how to assume (and, more im-portant, hold) each of the fundamental canine asanas, accom-panied by illustrations of the poses themselves, Bow Wow Yoga shows dogs how to develop a practice that will fully benefit their doggy minds, bodies, and spirits.
First there was French for Cats, then there was Why Cats Paint . . . now it's time to find out what our dogs are up to!

Kids Love This Book..........1998-12-09
...and so do adults! I have bought several copies of this over the years and keep buying more because I have given so many to friends and family who loved the book too. It is not only very entertaining but can also be used in educational discussions of cultural differences. I like to use it to teach children the lesson that other people aren't wrong simply because they don't agree with you or think the same as you. You say a turkey says "gobble-gobble", I say a turkey says "buldu-buldu". Who's right? We both are!

Customer Reviews:
Great Training Book.......2000-12-31
The exercise of you being a dog while another person attempts to "train" you without using words is outstanding. The book really reminds you to be very clear and focused when dealing with your dog. I am a first time dog owner, and I would higly recommend it. My only problem is that I wish it dealt with aggressive behavioral problems more in depth.
good training methods, but.............2000-08-08
I like her training methods -- positive reinforcement, no negative "punishment." But, she's not the first to suggest this, nor necessarily the best. I definitely felt that the "Tao" part was an merely added as an attempt to set her "style" apart from others -- a superfulous & poorly integrated attempt in my opinion. Was a waste of my money; we've been training for 3 years.
This book is so awesome.......2000-06-28
The Toa of Bow Wow is a super cool book. The author reminds us that it is an honor to share our life with a dog and that it is our obligation to train our dogs in a respectful and loving manner. She encourges the reader to think like your dog and to not expect your dog to think like you - remove your ego from the relationship. It is a beautifully written narative on the special bond between dogs and their human compainions.
If you love dogs you will love this book........1999-09-07
Another excellent book that treats animals(dogs) as the thinking, loving life forms that they are. We share this planet with some amazing, fellow creatures. Dogs are one of the most interesting and intelligent. We have taken them from their packs and placed them into our homes. We have the responsibility to provide ourselves and our home as their new pack and den. They understand us far better than we understand them. Deborah Wood helps you understand them and their world as only a sensitive, intelligent observer can.
A great book for a dog novice or the expert........1999-02-24
This book should be the standard in training a dog. I thoroughly reccomend this book, and the use of Taoist techniques in the obedience training of a dog.

Readers of all ages will delight in this strikingly illustrated book of shapes, the last in Chuck Murphy's stunning pop-up quartet.
Customer Reviews:
delightfully brilliant.......2001-09-01
My son loves looking at this again and again. He moves the tabs and loves the last page the most. I love the art work and have a new found appreciation for pop-up books.
Chuck Murphy's Talent For Children.......2000-04-29
I have purchased several of Chuck Murphy's books for our 2 year old. Although the books are made for 4-8 years old, our son can play with it for hours. Since smaller children such as ours do not realize how easy things are torn, we are on our 3rd copy of the book. It is great.
Delightful book with a surprise ending!.......2000-04-27
A wonderful book for kids of almost any age. All of the pop-ups are great, but the final one had us gasping in amazement.
Pop-up Shapes Delight.......2000-03-25
We bought this book for our 10 month old son for two reasons: he loved the other Chuck Murphy books (numbers and colors) and we are huge dog lovers. This book combines the best of both worlds - teaches kids shapes with doggies. For example, the circle shape is represented by a 3-D bicycle and a dog running next to it. The square is a bed with a dog curled up on the end of it and my favorite is the heart - two dogs "kissing". The colors in this book are not as vibrant as the 1 to 10 book or the colors book, but my son is as entranced by it as the others. He absolutely loves opening the shapes and seeing the resulting scenes pop up. Although he isn't grasping what the figures are yet, he is grasping the cause and effect nature of the book. I recommend it highly.

My five year old daughter just started to learn to read. She opened the book and read through most of it by herself! What words she did not know, she was able to guess. She was very excited to be able to read, and wanted to try to read other books. Excellent early reader book. Adorable story line.
