Great book -- if I only had one book on the subject, this would be it.
The narrative style made the book enjoyable for me to read (yet difficult to skim). The book offered me plenty of practical advice and opinion based on the author's experience.
The "dummies book" is has better illustrations, but this book wins-out for its consistent organization and easy readability. (I've also reviewed the Dummies book on Amazon in more detail: 3 of 5 stars).

This is absolutely the best book to read if you are interested in finding out more about greyhound adoption. The information is clear, accurate, and very well written. Consider this your greyhound "Bible".
Best Book on Greyhounds.......2005-06-20
Several years ago my partner and I were looking for a large sized dog to keep in an apartment. After quite a bit of research we learned about racing greyhounds. We ended up acquiring two of them. Then we got a house and had three. The original two got old and passed away and we now own our fourth and fifth. Greyhounds can be kind of addicting.
I've read pretty much every book ever written on Greyhounds and one time or another, and have searched the web extensively. When greyhound adoption first became popular Branigan's book was the only published reliable source. Since then other good books have been written, but I still think anyone interested in greyhounds should start here.
The book provides good advice on dealing with the greyhound when you first get it home and get it accustomed to living in a house. However, I'm not a big fan of crating my dogs. In our home we have actually made the dogs their own area where we sometimes confine them, although it is more of an in-house kennel complete with couch dog beds and doggy door (and windows for squirrel watching). They do actually like having some degree of confinement, and Branigan is correct in suggesting that the dog needs time to adjust and a degree of confinement. After all, they lived in a crate until they came to the house.
She also provides, as others have noted, quite a bit of good medical information. Not only is the thyroid information important, but I have spoken with every vet about the greyhound's sensitivity to anesthesia.
Every greyhound owner, or anyone thinking about owning a greyhound, should read this book.
The Best Greyhound Book Ever.......2004-10-01
I have read 15 different books on greyhound adoption and this is by far the best book of them all. If you only buy one book on greyhounds, make it this one. It is an easy to understand and FUN read full of priceless information. I love it.

I'm so surprised nobody has reviewed this wonderful book yet! I guess it's up to me.
First, this book is easy to read and comprehend, which is good because there is lots of useful information to remember. There is nothing in this book that is not covered. It even has a section about the tick diseases greyhounds can have because at the tracks, the dogs are not given any sort of flea/tick control.
This book does not take sides in the greyhound racing debate. Instead it gives truthful, unbiased information all about greyhounds! If you are seriously interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, this is the book for you. It has lots of gorgeous photographs and short, fun stories about adopted greyhounds. It is very well organized and it is easy to find what you are looking for.
I really like Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan also, but if I had to pick between the two I would pick this one simply because the information is just as good plus you get color photographs and shiny pages. Whee! Also, it is a hardcover book and in my opinion that is a plus.
This book is perfect and lovely. I highly recommend it to any greyhound fan!

Carolyn Raeke captures the essence of greyhound uniqueness in this well written and well organized book. The photos are fabulous and especially moving is the story of Chloe and her transformation from an exploited animal to a loved member of a family.

I borrowed this book from a friend and after reading (and re-reading) its beautiful pages I was convinced I needed to adopt a greyhound. This book was very informative and the pictures just make you fall for these wonderful animals! I recommend the book to anyone wanting to find out more about greyhounds and to see if they would be right for your home.

This book was very informative as well as beautiful. I just loved to glossy pages..but that isn't the point..hehe..well, The reason why I gave this book 4 stars is because it lacked as much health-troubleshooting pages as I would have liked, but otherwise, I liked the story in the beginning, the explanation to racing, I absolutely like how it didn't side with anti-racing activists..that gets on my nerves....and pictures of many products you might need on the way.

I was disappointed in this book. Beautiful pictures and ok info, but not enough examples of Lefton china. I have several inherited pieces which are clearly marked. Found only 1 in this book. I guess if you can afford to buy a large library of hardback books, finally you find what you are looking for.

I'm an amatuer collector of animal figurines and planters. just getting started and with the aid of this book I am able to identify my purchases. It helps me tremendously in satisfying my curiosity about each piece. This is the second book I own by the same author, and I plan on getting the others. Of course, there are way too many items out there to all be decribed in just a few books.

It lists good marks so you can date the pieces and is easy to understand. This is not a history book and doesn't do much for detail. I was able to find similar items and get a general price. My understand is that I will need to get the other books as each volums supposedly has more items. I will purchase the others, too.
The worst thing about this book is the binding. The cover came off and I had to hot glue it to keep it together.

Only a few small black and white photos. Guide says 1999 prices. No year produced information asssociated with any of the items listed, so if you collect vintage this is of no help in identifying when a piece was made. Am returning this book.
lefton price guide.......2001-06-30
I found this price guide to be a bit skimpy. I was not able to find any of my Lefton pieces listed. I was very disappointed. They also could put the listings in better order.
An okay book.......2001-01-05
The book is not too bad for a paperback price guide. But it seems the idea is to get all of her books. I couldn't find more than one reference to my Lefton collection. I look forward to seeing a whole-extensive book on Lefton China. Maybe writing books on different categories, such as dinnerware, figurines, etc.
Very Useful Resource for Lefton Collectors.......1999-08-08
I found this book to be a very useful resource for adding to my Lefton collection. The pictures are good and the preliminary information on the company along with its trademarks is helpful. I question some of the values that are given, but the author explains her pricing difficulties in the preface.
The recommendation I would give for the next edition of this booklet would be to organize the listings in a better way. The categories are alphabetized but the listings in the categories are not organized either by number or description. The listing for figurines, for example, is very long and having to run through all the listing to find one item takes awhile. I also hope that the next book will be more inclusive and include all the pieces from all the patterns and not just a few selected.
In the meantime, I applaud the author for her efforts in putting together a much needed resource on this area of collecting that is becoming extremely popular.
