3 out of 5 stars Good but techniques need to be combined with the ideas from "Setting Limits".......2007-03-08

This book has the idea that if you ALWAYS ignore bearable but unwanted behavior, it is discouraged and wil decrease. Intolerable behavior, that which must end is described as that which threatens the safetly of yourself and others (ex. playing with matches, etc.).

Although I am sure that ignoring leads to a decrease in unwanted behavior, it needs to be coupled with explaining to a child what NOT to do as well as what is expected of him or her. This book does not teach the child what not to do, but expects the child to decrease the behavior, not because they are told or explained why that behavior isn't tolerated but because she will be ignored.

The author believes that EVERYTHING the child does is an attempt to attract attention (which is not necessarily so) and that if you withdraw that attention, the child will stop doing it. This is a good technique to use in some situations. However, some intolerable behavior needs to be explained to children and have consequences as well. For example, I have to teach my kids what not to touch around the house and don't believe that ignoring them when they touch something that might break will end that behavior. They are doing it out of curiosity, not necessarily to call on my attention. It is important to identify when a behavior is a call for attention and when it is not, so you know when to follow this book and when to apply a different technique.

The book "Setting Limits" is great in helping to avoid repeating yourself as well as raising your voice in order to be "heard" and not "tuned out."

5 out of 5 stars Read this before you but your child on Meds!!!!.......2004-08-10

My husband and I first became familar with this book when we attened a parenting class at UCLA which Cynthia Whitham taught. It was based on the principles of this book. Our son, four, at the time was diagosed with ADHD. After appling the things we learned from Cynthia in everyday life, our son was re-tested and found not to have ADHD. I believe it's commonly misdiagosed and this book really gives you the tools to handle a child that might just need firm limits and not medication. I belive this book is a must for EVERY parent. I have recommended it and passed it on to various friends for 3 years now. If kids came with an manual this would be it!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspires Cooperation.......2003-07-28

"You may have chosen to be a parent, but you did not choose to give up your mental health in the process. I believe parents have a right to no-fuss mornings, tear-free bedtimes, low stress errand-running and time for themselves." ~Cynthia Whitham

Do you want to learn how to stop: whining, tantrums, dawdling, bad language, name calling, teasing, spitting, biting, talking back, interrupting, complaining, sulking and fighting, this is your guide.

Cynthia Whitham is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in parent training. She also gives workshops for parents, teachers and therapists. She uses the ideas in this book at home with her own children.

Cynthia makes an excellent point about children finding negative ways to get attention. She recommends complimenting the good behavior and seeing if that helps change the situation.

"The more positive attention you give, the better things get."

This is a very organized book. Not only can you organize the behaviors you love, dislike and want to stop, you can also pick them right off a nice list.

I also loved her ideas of "do say and don't say." There are things that will encourage a variety of behaviors you might not want to encourage even when you are being positive. This has to do with sibling rivalry and making a child successful at the expense of others. Being compared to your brothers and sisters just isn't fun.

You will also see the value of:

Making praise a habit.
Making Big Tasks Manageable
How to use "Ignore" to the best advantage.
Offering choices (oh, this is a good one and it works)
Making a better behaviour chart
Setting limits
Time-Out
Battle Plans

This book presents practical solutions to everyday problems. This is an excellent resource for parents, grandparents, teachers, babysitters and day care workers.

According to Cynthia, "spanking and screaming" are not options you have to engage in. You can really focus on the positive aspects and see amazing results.

Highly Recommended! 20 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book on parenting.......2003-06-16

This book is an excellent resource for parents and educators alike. Written in clear simple language the book offer practical solutions to everyday problems we face with young children. Principles of behavior modification are universal and apply to all ages, however, specific techniques vary. In Win the Whining War book Ms. Whitham offers both, theory and practice. For the last ten years I've been recommending this book to my patients' parents with consistent success.

5 out of 5 stars How to get Parental Peace -- and Kid Compliance.......2003-03-05

If you really want to cut the whining, the tantrums, the interrupting, the talking back, the dawdling in your home -- you need to go to the experts. Or expert.

Cynthia Whitham's (a licensed clinical social worker specializing in parent training and associate director of the prominent UCLA Parent Training program) solid suggestions proved as easy to implement with my 3-year-old as were with my 11- and 10-year-olds. And unlike some experts, she offers detailed steps to her simple solutions, with consideration give to the age of the child.

If there's one book I actually enjoyed and found effective among the myriad of parenting tomes I've picked up along the way, it's this one: "Win the Whining War & Other Skirmishes: A Family Peace Plan".

If you want to dial down the yelling and ramp up the compliance level in your home -- this is your book.

    Book Description

Matt Kramer, longtime Wine Spectator columnist and author of the classic Making Sense series of wine books, now turns his palate toward Italy. Though Italian wine is the most popular wine among consumers, it remains puzzling to most wine lovers who wouldn't know a Barolo from a Barbaresco. Though shrouded in mystery, Italian wine has some of the most exciting and affordable varieties being produced today. Kramer is a trusted companion in the wine store, telling his readers the essentials: which wines can't be missed, and which are safe to skip. Organized like a "Shopper's Guide," this unique book offers the lowdown on the most dazzling wines in every price range—their regions, traditions, and which foods to match with them. With Kramer's trademark wit and intelligence, here is an invaluable tool to finding treasures in the local wine shop.

4 out of 5 stars Great Primer to Italian Wines.......2007-05-22

There are some great reviews here of this book. The only thing I can add as someone who loves Italian wine is Matt Kramer does a great job with the big job he has given himself and tells you as much in his introduction. I thought the first 3 chapters were excellent with the philosophy of being Italian. Each chapter simply covers the basics of Northern Italy's wine giving you producers who are good at that particuliar wine. I would recommend this book as a primer for the real beginner. God read.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book........2007-05-09

    This is a wonderful book.

I was already familiar with many Italian wines, but my knowledge and experience with them was scattered.
This book put so many things into perspective for me.
I went to Italy for the first time last September and now reading this book, I can look back and better understand and appreciate what I saw then.
The organization of the book is outstanding. The book has identified several wines of interest which I have now tried with great enjoyment.
Kramer's writing style is not only informative, but he can turn a phrase and I found my self smiling at several points and then found myself looking for the next clever piece of writing.
This book has also triggered a desire to learn more about Italian wines and I have started reading the Joe Bastianich book as a follow up.
This book is a home run.

4 out of 5 stars Matt Kramer Understands Italian Wine.......2007-01-09

Matt Kramer provides a good perspective on Italian wines and winemaking. Although not a comprehensive encyclopedia of Italian wines or vintages it does provide a solid and understandable description of major and minor wine varieties. My only complaint...the typos are rampant and inexcusable.

5 out of 5 stars Matt does it again.......2006-12-17

This is a great book, even though it is not as ambitious as the California and Burgundy books. Matt Kramer focuses on the most important and easiest to find Italian wines, but he really gets to the bottom of what makes them great, or not. If you want to know why a 20-dollar Chianti normale from a great producer is way more exciting than a 200-dollar Sassicaia, you must read this book!
The only downside is that the book is not a complete guide of Italian wine. For that, you can get Vino Italiano. But Matt's informed, intellectual view of Italian wine is unique, and really irreplaceable. If you love Italian wine, you must own this book.

3 out of 5 stars Veni, vidi, vini.......2006-10-27

This is the most recent addition to Matt Kramer's "Making Sense" series of wine books. If you've read any of the others, you know that the dumbed-down "Making Sense" tag is a bit of a misnomer. The original Making Sense of Wine is one of the most intellectual wine books ever written, with thoughtful chapters on the nature of connoisseurship, the importance of typicity of place, and wine's changing role at the dinner table throughout history. And then there is Kramer's rare, inexplicably out-of-print Making Sense of Burgundy, which costs north of $100 if you can find it... rather like a prized Burgundy itself.

For better or worse, Making Sense of Italian Wine doesn't continue this deceptive labeling. It's organized like a buyer's guide for beginners and indeed Kramer states flatly in the introduction: "This book is not intended for wine lovers who are already deeply knowledgeable about Italian wines.... Instead, this book is for relative newcomers to Italian wines. It's for everyone who has enjoyed a bottle recommended to them in an Italian restaurant and would like a little guidance about how to go about having another such delicious experience."

The majority of the book consists of overviews of about 40 different types of Italian wine, broken down, for each category, into a brief history, a list of recommended producers, an overview of the cuisine typically served with the wines in Italy, various vital stats, and references to similar wine types. The culinary descriptions are particularly refreshing because they don't degenerate into any of the customary voodoo about what micro-elements in the wine and food "pair" with each other in whatever barely noticeable ways. Instead, Kramer just describes, quite evocatively, what the locals eat, so the result is a small lesson in culture rather than the usual dinner-table dogma.

The 40 wine categories cover about as much breadth as you can expect in a book of 250 pages without very much depth for any particular type. (Big guns like Barolo get 20 pages tops, mostly producer descriptions.) It's tempting to skip through a lot of this, but the fact is that Kramer has a real knack for isolating distinctive producers and tying their wine into the kind of story you want to retell to your friends when you have a glass of it in front of you. There's Saracco's Moscato d'Asti, for example, which Kramer describes as the closest thing on the commercial market to the genuine old-time Moscato d'Asti--the kind that was filtered through a sock and would often spontaneously explode in producers' cellars. If every chapter had a recommendation as on the mark and interesting as that one, the book would be indispensable, but unfortunately a lot of chapters seem to cry out for more flesh on the bones.

The three introductory essays are the emotional heart of the book in that they reveal Kramer having a real passion for the subject, rather than just a lot of expertise. The first is titled "Bella Figura--The Italian Love of the Beautiful Gesture" and is a warm account of the Italian obsession for the seemingly insignificant flourish designed to project the perfect image. For some producers, their "bella figura" is a fancy label or a heavy bottle; for others it's new oak barrels--"except for those traditionalist producers who, in a kind of jujitsu move, make the absence of small oak barrels their bella figura." Seen that way, suddenly it makes sense how both approaches can seem quintessentially Italian.

    Book Description

California has become the hottest wine producing area in the world, and it happened in less than 25 years. Now the acclaimed Wine Spectator columnist and critic Matt Kramer traces the dramatic progress of the California winemaking industry--the who, how, why, what, and where. No one is better equipped to provide insight into the ways in which West Coast vintners are working to create extraordinary wines, and to explain the myriad developments in character, quality, and technology that have taken place. Kramer's book provides the first comprehensive look at how new approaches to wine making have contributed to California's current high status in the world order of wine.

5 out of 5 stars California Wine Simplified........2007-04-08

By far, the most complete and easily read book of its type. It puts all of the recent changes in the California AVA's in perspective.

5 out of 5 stars I've read it, I've used it, I drank it (well, not really).......2006-11-10

I have already nipped into this book several times, especially before trips to nearby Santa Barbara wine country, and Kramer has never steered me wrong yet. Based on his recommendations, I experienced some great wines at Foley and Longoria - not really a GUIDE BOOK per se, no fancy graphics or easy to turn to index pages, but Kramer does have his own wine guide for this. I highly recommend for wino-folks living right here on the left coast.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Entertaining Info on California Wine.......2005-09-28

Matt Kramer's New California Wine starts with a section that describes the thinking and mentalities behind the California wine industry (he named this part "Thinking California"). He then goes on to describe California's American Viticultural Areas (AVA) and different activities going on in each in a part named "Drinking California". He mentions quite a number of wineries - in ways that offer details that go beyond the usual, dry descriptions often found elsewhere. The "Thinking California" part of the book provides the reader with an excellent overview of the state of California wines - the thinking that has evolved the European wine mentality/tradition as opposed to the California approach to the crafting of fine wines. Kramer's writing style is quite entertaining - he's descriptive with word choices that vividly portray California. At the start of key parts of the book he sets the scene with a quote and then moves into descriptions that inform and entertain. In "Thinking California" his insights into changes and evolutions that have transpired in California wines through descriptions of the history, the wine plant, the climate, and the soil provide an overview helpful when thinking about California wines. In "Drinking California" he gives descriptions of areas (AVA) and different wine operations. Quite a lot of detail that I'll use when planning my next visit to California - the kind of detail one might want when doing advance planning - necessary when visiting wineries. As a native Californian who now lives in Europe I've tried to answer questions about California wines - what I've learned from Mr. Kramer gives an understanding of and a perspective about California wines that I'll find helpful. I'm glad I bought the book and consider its price to be a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for any Wine Enthusiast.......2006-07-04

Will further your interest in becoming a connoisseur (even if you don't know you'd like to become one yet). Best for thoes with at least a basic appreciation. Read after Andrea Immer's "Great Wine Made Simple," which provides a great introduction. "Making Sense of Wine" is more general in content.

      5 out of 5 stars Elegantly written.......2004-12-27

An elegant book about an elegant subject. Learned a lot and was intellectually engaged. Not a thorough primer on wine or tasting but rather a thorough discourse on the important topics in wine today.

4 out of 5 stars Stop making sense.......2004-01-02

The title of the book is amusing given the numerous times the author refutes his own arguments on one point or another. Self-consistency, one imagines, is essential to "making sense."

For instance, he waxes eloquent in his novelistic style about how critical maintaining the cork was to the evolution of the bottle shape: "...there couldn't have been much laying down or cellaring of wines, at least to judge from the shape of the bottle...The bulbous base of the Globe and Spike made laying it sideways quite difficult and the long neck made it that much harder for the wine to neslte against a cork, keeping it moist and swollen, the seal intact." (p128)

This is followed soon after by: "There is even serious doubt as to whether it is necessary to lay the bottles on their sides to keep the cork moist...I can attest from personal experience that the corks and the wines appear no different from old wines stored horizontally." (along with further arguments and examples, p139)

So if we bought the book hoping to "make sense" of all this, should we infer that laying bottles on their side is better or not?

The author, who doesn't include a single illustration save one of himself, appears to be on a search for "truth in wine," which he argues in his first chapter is in fact reachable in the form of "standards." He then proceeds to demonstrate how such standards are indeed beyond the reach of objective truth in practice.

      Nonsense.

However, I think everyone truly interested in wine should read this, if only to deepen the delicious enigma.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent intro to wine.......1997-02-12

The wine writer for the Portland Oregonian presents a truly intelligent introduction to wine, an excellent starting point for a novice who wants to ramp up his knowledge quickly and well, and a good read even for those who think they know it all

        Book Description

From the bestselling authors of Wine For Dummies, a different way to choose and enjoy wine

Because the choices in a wine store or on a wine list can seem limitless or intimidating, wine drinkers often stick with what they know, such as Merlot, or go with the choice made by a wine critic or a waiter. This appealingly straightforward and unintimidating guide will help wine drinkers discover what they like and make informed choices. The authors identify 12 wine styles, or taste categories, including four for red wine and four for white wine. For each style, the authors detail how it tastes, where it comes from, grape varieties that are common for the style, and a few recommended wines. The style "Soft, Fruity Red Wines," for instance, includes U.S. Merlots, Beaujolais, Burgundies and other Pinot Noirs, and southern Italian reds, among other wines. Complete with tips on pairing wine with food and a pull-out wine wheel to help readers remember the styles, this is the refreshingly different book wine drinkers have been waiting for.

Mary Ewing-Mulligan, Master of Wine, and Ed McCarthy, Certified Wine Instructor (New York, NY), are among the best-known, most widely respected wine experts in the United States. They have appeared frequently in the media, including on television's Food Network and CNNfn, and have written seven wine books in the For Dummies series.

Obscenely wealthy entrepreneurs--men who made their bundle in the coffee business, mining, shipping, commodities, and politics--decide to buy hobby vineyards in the trendy Napa Valley. The San Francisco Examiner publishes a special lifestyle edition on California wines. Sound familiar? Welcome to Rutherford, California circa 1890.

And welcome to A Sense of Place: An Intimate Portrait of the Niebaum-Coppola Winery and the Napa Valley by Steven Kolpan, professor of wine studies at The Culinary Institute of America. By charting the history of one piece of Napa soil, the author provides an absolutely fascinating tour that is part documentary, part Hollywood fable, and part scathing chronicle of corporate ineptitude. When Finnish mariner-turned-San-Francisco-millionaire Gustav Niebaum establishes Inglenook Estate in 1879, his dream is to make the finest wine in California. His heir comes close to fulfilling the dream before selling a portion of the estate to a wine co-op, which is purchased by liquor giant Heublein. Heublein turns the once-proud estate into a jug wine brand. Meanwhile, the heir's Mormon wife--who hates everything about the wine business--sells the original house and remaining vineyards to film director Francis Ford Coppola, who 20 years later buys Heublein's parcel to reunite the original estate. Chapters recount this tale through the recollections of Rafael Rodriguez, a migrant laborer working at the property in the 1950s and now vineyard manager; Scott McLeod, current Niebaum-Coppola "winegrower" and artisan of the high-end Rubicon; and Dennis Fife, Inglenook's final president during the tumultuous Heublein days and now a respected winemaker in his own right, in a chapter that reads like a financial report written by Mel Brooks.

Captain Niebaum's 1884 Inglenook Claret sold for $3 a case. Coppola's 1995 Rubicon was $75 a bottle. For the price of A Sense of Place, every Cabernet fan will be able to savor a little piece of "Rutherford dust." --Tony Mason

        Book Description

In A Sense of Place , renouned wine expert Steven Kolpan tells the stry of how Francis Ford Coppola brought California's most distinguished and historical vineyard back to life. Gustave Niebaum's Inglenook Estate, started in 1879, was one of California's first established vineyards and the birthplace of its premium wine industry. Generations after Niebaum's death, the vineyard was sold to Heublein (the distributor of Smirnoff Vodka, among others) who broke up the land and changed the brand from a premium, connoisseur wine to a mass-market jug wine. In 1975, Coppola bought the Niebaum residence and the surrounding estate. Along with the original estate reputation, he also brought back some of its original workers, including Rafael Rodriguez, who, in his late seventies, now serves as the vineyard manager and historian. Coppola overcame naysayer, red tape, and financial turmoil to reestablish the winery as a defender of quality, producing wine under four different labels, including the revered wined Rubicon and Cask Cabernet. In 1995, Coppola purchased the Inglenook Chateau and its adjacent vineyard, fulfilling his dream of reuniting the original Napa Valley Estate. Kolpan's luscious, flavorful narrative is worth enjoying now and keeping for later.

        1 out of 5 stars Pulp Fiction.......2004-02-09

As a romantic novel, the book was somewhat entertaining. From a scholarly standpoint, it was very disappointing.

Know what you would like to get from it before investing the time necessary to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Cheers! Fun and informative read!.......2003-11-28

This breezy history of the Neibaum-Coppola vineyards reads like a novel, it's that interesting and informative. As a casual admirer of the N-C label, I had a passing interest in going "behind the scenes," but I couldn't have imagined how compelling and educational this attractive little book actually would be! You'll probably read it in only a sitting or two, but you will definitely finish it off by wanting to explore the wide array of delicious N-C products so objectively and accurately explained and reviewed in the text.

        1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2002-09-16

Rife with historical inaccuracies, this book could have been written by just about anyone who has read the storyboard located at the Niebaum Coppola Winery. The sad thing is that it too contains inaccurate historical information. Try using Napa County records and those of the local newspapers next time Steve, instead of relying on spoon fed information from a publicist.

        5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful winery..........2002-04-17

I've been to the winery and was amazed at the story. I was so excited to find this book so I could have a copy of this story to have for myself.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2001-05-25

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the magnificent Neibaum-Copola estate and its rich history. I couldn't put this one down. It is full of very interesting facts about California wine history.
